This is the 22nd English edition with considerable additions and notes. 495 toned pages with some foxing throughout. Sewn binding with glued backstrap is split through backstrap but stitches are holding firmly. Name on second fep; section from 315 to 335 is partially detached at top stitch bottom stitch is intact. We found a flower pressed between pages 20 and 21 I think it's a vinca or violet but we'll leave it in there for you. Paterson New Jersey: Young Men's and Young Women's Hebrew Association 1950. Booster Edition. Thursday May 25 1950. 25th Anniversary of Paterson New Jersey Jewish Center. Folio sized stapled magazine binding. Unpaginated about 40 pages. This volume is a combination of articles black and white photographs and many advertisements. Selling space in this issue would have been a fundraiser for the group. A gaggle of Bubbe's would have been on the telephone calling the local businesses and selling the ads. The ads generally have a business name or a message from someone i.e. "Compliments of Mr. and Mrs. David Moskow." There are also vintage product and company advertisements. A photo essay shows the building of the "Y" in 1949 and 1950 other photographs date back to 1906. The majority of candid photos are not captioned most head shots are captioned such as "Harry S. Reiman presents Dr. Samuel Singer Trophies to best campers of the 1949 season." Efrem Zimbalist Yehudi Menuhin Vladimer Horowitz were among the many musicians who performed concerts or recitals there. Some tanning to page borders notably on folded corners. The covers are a silver foil with blue titles and decorations. The top blue banner is rubbed. Wear to covers edgewear folded bottom corner of front cover and first several pages; those turned tips are tanned. Top corner of back cover is creased and top corner of last page is missing. We noted some pencilled brackets line and marginalia on page 189. Full calf bindings have five raised bands on spine worn corners and considerable rubbing. Volume one has half of the title block on spine with gilt titles helpful to know what was there if you choose to restore these rare books the title block is missing from volume two. There are some tanned bands to inside of cover edges and edges of fep; we speculate that this tanning was caused from a brown paper covering at some point in the book's 300 year history. Brooklyn NY: Hebrew Publishing Company 1901. Rare 1901 Siddur Jewish Prayerbook with Celluloid Covers This is a well-loved well-used volume. Book opens right to left. 511 pages. 32mo: 4.75 by 3.5 inches in size and 1.75 inches thick. Sewn binding. Cream colored celluloid cover front back and spine with cream cloth underneath. An ornate brass medallion is centered in the middle of front cover. A plain hinged brass clasp is missing the peg to hold the volume closed. The endpapers are an ivory moire. Both pastedowns are cracked. The sewn binding has several loose sections: pages 160-192 are held in by a loose thread pages 193 to 222 are detached and laid in. The book is shaken. The page marked 322 is actually page 223. The remainder of the book appears firmly bound. The pages are bordered with bright gilt on all sides. Pages 508 to 511 are cut very tight on the top margin so that the page numbers are not visible. The blank pages after page 511 to the endpaper are chipped at the midpoint where the clasp is. We note small stains on pages 224 and 225 and fingermarks in the margin of page 121. Overall the pages are bright and clean. The celluloid cover is chipped at three out of four spine points and on corners of back cover. The front cover is cracked at both corners. The cloth underneath the celluloid is frayed in the spine area. There are some scratches and some light soil to the celluloid. Her Wikipedia biography describes "Her writing has all the charm of unaffected spontaneous humour combined with quick wit and literary skill." Rubbed gray and brown marbled boards with leather corners and leather extended spine. Backstrip of spine is missing and has been replaced with paper strip with typed title which is peeling from front cover. Leather corners are worn and the embossed design on the leather cornes and spine is worn but still visable. Bumped corners. Marbling on outside pages. 292 surprisingly bright pages. Taped repair to front pastedown. Marbled endpapers in front. Poorly blotted name on fep along with penciled booksellers notations. Small area of ink transfer on opposite page and bleed through on fep. Name on title page as well. Minor foxing on pages preceding title page and after last page. We note no foxing in text. It looks like overcut rear endpage has been taped intentionally to marbled endpages and we'll leave that for you to separate. The rear endpage extends just over rear board. Two black and white engravings. John Ruskin 1819-1900 was a prominent English Victorian era art critic patron art "philanthropist" writer painter and professor. Francesca Alexander 1837-1917 moved from Boston Massachusetts to Italy with her family at age 16. There she began to collect and translate Italian folk stories and songs illustrating them herself. Alexander met Ruskin in 1882 and he purchased her manuscript and illustrations for what would become this volume. Ruskin published a second book of Alexander's - The Story of Ida. They remained friends until his death. Partly disbound: rear board detached. Spine including title area is badly chipped. Pencilled price and notation on fep; engravings covered with tissue are foxed and there is some light foxing on preceding of succeeding pages only. Corners and edges are worn. This book features entires that allow the reader to make interesting genealogical connections within the Essex County Massachusetts region. The owner of this book was a woman named Margaret Merrill. There are multiple Margaret Merrills who were born in the 1830s-40s and lived in Essex county so it is not possible to determine the exact owner of this book. What we can determine however are the many authors of Margarets autographs. The book features inscriptions and autographs of six members of the Dodge family who were spread out around Essex county in Hamilton Beverly and Wenham. There are entries from Sarah W. Dodge 1838-1920 daughter of George and Mary Dodge of Hamilton Mary Abbie Dodge 1836-1879 daughter of Richard and Hannah Dodge of Beverly and sisters mother Elizabeth C. Dodge wife of Abraham Dodge and her daughters Caroline Martha and Ellen Dodge all of Wenham. What a fascinating genealogy these entries weave. Other entries are from other Wenham Cambridge and Boston locals often multiple members of the same family including two members of each of the Henderson Curtis and Cabot families and several others. Entries were written between 1859-1881. As was the style of the time most fill an entire page with poetry and wishes for Margaret. It seems Margaret was married in 1863 as she received a Marriage wish from Caroline C. Dodge: One year of joy another of comfort and all the rest of content

Another entry consists of a beautiful line drawing rendered in red and black ink of a bird surrounded by boughs and bearing the ornate signature of Charles Stanton and dated 1877. There are two cards tipped in to the book each with a beautiful coloured drawing and a scrolled message and printed with the names of the giver. Another sample entry reads as follows: Passing through life's field of action/Lest we past before its end; /Take within your little volume This moment from a friend/Very Sincerely - Sarah A Fall April 7 1879. This is a really exciting find for anyone interested in Essex County Massachusetts. Margaret was obviously a beloved citizen of Wenham and forged connections far and wide allowing a modern-day reader or researcher to trace genealogy and gain insight into friendships and connections in the region. Autograph Books - Historical Context: An autograph book was a book used to collect the autographs of others people who were important to the book-owners life. Traditionally they were exchanged among friends and classmates to fill with poems personal messages small pieces of verse scripture quotations and other mementos. Sometimes tucked inside the pages would be pressed flowers calling cards and locks of hair. Many also contained illustrations or drawings. The tradition of keeping these books began in central Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries and came to America in the late 18th century. Their appeal peaked in the latter part of the 19th century but they were still common in 20th century. As interest in autograph books dwindled as they were replaced by yearbooks and guest books. This small book measures 7.5 inches by 6.25 inches and contains 96 pages. It is 21% complete. The book includes 4 black and white plates with line drawings illustrating idealized and pastoral scenes. The pages themselves are gilt-edged and are printed in several alternating pastel shades. The front cover is a deeply embossed red leather with gold designs. It bears the title The Philopena or Autograph Album. It is worn but still intact. The binding is in good condition as are the pages. The handwriting is legible. 1884 Academic Workbook of a Young Teen Girl Studying At the Bramley Seminary in Yorkshire England

On offer is fine example of the type of education offered to well-off girls in late 19th century EnglandThe journal belonged to Emma Mottram sometimes Motram b. 1870 daughter of Edward and Ellen Jessop Mottram. Emma was born and grew up in Bramley Yorkshire. In 1884 she was 14-year-old student attending a boarding school often referred to as a seminary - in this case Bramley Seminary. Emmas notebook provides an excellent look into the education system in England at the end of the 19th century. Headings that Emma has written in the book above her many neatly written notes include English History Dictation William Tell Bible History Geography Composition and others. Her notes are interspersed with a few letters Emma wrote to friends. It is not clear whether the letters were written as an academic exercise. Not only does Emmas book reference areas of study but it provides details on what that education looked like. Many entries record answers to questions on topics that were obviously discussed in class. Some excerpts follow: William the Conqueror was the son of the First Duke of Normandy. He pretended that Edward the Confessor during his stay in Normandy whither he had been obliged to flee on account of the incursions of the Danes had in gratitude for the favours he had received promised his crown which at his death William came over to claim. Where is Lake Baikal and what is its extent In Asia it is half the size of Scotland Where is Heligoland and to whom does it belong At the mouth of the Elbe it belongs to the English

I thought as I had a little time I would write to you. It is Wickersley Sunday School Sermons next Sunday. There is a tea on Tuesday and a meeting after the tea
. Many pages show either initials or corrections in red ink possibly made by a teacher. This was the late Victorian period. Britain has seen incredible advances in science and technology. Coupled with the strongest naval fleet the world had ever witnessed Britain had become the global power. There were massive social changes at home as well including education. The education curriculum served not only to solidify the nearly universal literacy of the population but to also cement certain attitudes about the role of the English throughout the world. For a historian this small students notebook offers an excellent glimpse into the structure of that education system and hints at its impact on the society as a whole. This is an excellent primary source document form this period. This soft-cover notebook measures 8.0 inches by 6.5 inches and contains 88 pages. It is 100% complete. The cover is in fair condition. There are extensive wear marks and some tears along the edges on the back cover. The binding is stitched and it is loose The cover has pulled away from the spine in places.
