As a diplomat in Austrian service Grimani had played a major role in the expulsion of the Spanish from Naples. Early American Imprints 2nd series Shaw & Shoemaker 18494. This report is part of a lengthy and complicated matter involving a Revolutionary War privateer Gideon Olmstead who fought for over three decades for a larger share of a British ship taken during the war and Elizabeth Sergeant & Esther Waters the daughters and heirs of David Rittenhouse Pennsylvania's treasurer during the Revolution. Rittenhouse had been charged with protecting the prize money until the matter was resolved. However even after federal courts ruled in favor of Olmstead Pennsylvania refused to relinquish its claim to the money. In 1809 the United States Supreme Court in U.S. v. Peters 9 U.S. 5 Cranch 115 1809 in a nationalistic Marshall Court decision made it the first case to strike down a state statute. In response Gov. Snyder ordered the militia "to protect the daughters of Rittenhouse" who lived in adjoining houses at Arch and 7th Streets which they did for five weeks in March and April 1809. When the U.S. Marshal John Smith tried to serve the writ he was stopped by crossed bayonets. After he entered Sergeant's house through a rear window and arrested her Gov. Snyder finally paid the sum to the marshal striking a blow to the doctrine of state supremacy. This report relates to the unsuccessful attempt to force the marshall to release Elizabeth Sergeant Pennsylvania Chief Justice William Tilghman ruling that although he thought he had the power to discharge them if the federal court did not have jurisdiction he determined that in this case the federal court did have jurisdiction and so she should remain in custody of the U.S. marshall. A very scarce early 19th-century American legal report. In Very Good- Condition: disbound; scattered foxing and soiling first several leaves are the most heavily foxed; trimmed too closely at the foot of p. 39 with slight loss of text; old dampstain along upper edge of some leaves. President George Washington had died on December 14 1799 less than three years after leaving office. His sudden death inspired mourning throughout the new nation. Major William Jackson fought in the American Revolution and became aide to Major General Benjamin Lincoln before being assigned to General Washington's staff. In 1795 he married Elizabeth Willing daughter of Thomas Willing a prominent Philadelphia merchant and banker. In 1796 Washington appointed him Collector of the Port of Philadelphia which post he held until 1801 when President Thomas Jefferson dismissed him. In 1799 Jackson became president of the Society of the Cincinnati remaining in that office until his death in 1828. Very scarce. The weather-related quotations are arranged by month with a small illustration or head piece related to that month's astrological sign at the head of each page. The title page and other front matter and the quotations by month are printed within a green border. The 23 pages of interleaved material numbered i-xxiii are printed within a red border and inserted between the months with the 23d page following December. The interleaved material concerns weather-related items; for example that between February and March is about umbrellas. This charming book is particularly notable as one of the earliest works with typography designed by John Henry Nash the renowned San Francisco typographer and printer. Designed as a guide to the reading of ancient Latin and Spanish manuscripts this volume is beautifully illustrated with engraved plates showing the development of Latin and Spanish script from that used during the Roman empire up to the 18th century. The sample texts presented on the plates are transcribed in the accompanying pages. Lacking leaves 57 and 58; otherwise in Very Good Condition: edges of covers are rubbed with slight loss of paper; upper corners bumped; added engraved title page is soiled; old repair between second leaf title page and third leaf; front hinge separating; worming throughout largely confined to top margin affecting ruled borders and text on a few plates. A study of the work of French artist Edouard Detaille 1848-1912 who was the official painter of the battles of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 and became famous for his paintings of soldiers military life and manoeuvres and uniforms. This type of c. 1900 French publisher's insubstantial binding was meant to be replaced when the purchaser took the book to a bookbinder. It was not made to last for over a century and this one shows the expected signs of wear most significantly the loss of most of the paper over the spine and the resulting separation of the sections of the book. The volume is complete however with all 24 leaves of plates. In Good Condition with the binding as described: cover is soiled; fore-edges of some leaves slightly soiled and in a few cases slightly chipped; otherwise clean and bright. A. 1840 Manuscript Letter from the Wife of a Maine Sea Captain Sailing on the Solomon Saltus Discussing the Voyage and Business Back Home
Maine New England Usa AT Sea Baltimore Maryland. Fair with no dust jacket. 1840. Non-Book. On offer is an outstanding piece of early maritime history from the heart of 19th century Americas great whaling seaports. The letter was written in 1840 by Lucy Gray nee Drinkwater 1790-1884. It is addressed to her husband Joshua Gray 1788-1852 who was on board a sailing ship most likely captaining the voyage. The letter was posted to him in care of the ships agents Nesmith and Leeds in New York City. Joshua Gray was a sea captain who was born and lived his life in Yarmouth Maine. At the time of this letter he was sailing on the Sol. Saltus we believe that the abbreviation is for Solomon Saltus. The Solomon Saltus was laid down in 1838 in Falls River Massachusetts and was engaged in commercial shipping and took part in whaling expeditions. In the opening lines Lucy confirms that Joshua was recently in Rotterdam and is now expected to be on his return journey. He has asked Lucy to travel to Baltimore to join him for the winter. She does not feel that she is up to such a trip she was 50 years old at the time of writing. Some excerpts from the letter follow: .When you last went from B altimore .ed note you wish me to come there and spend the winter and I thought during the later part of the summer that I should be able to comply with your request but I have now given it up as I do not think I could bear the fatigue of such a journey
p 1. .I still have a hope that you will come if you should have to wait for business
p 2. Lucy asks Joshua about prices for the sale of goods he has sent her: I have one barrel of molasses that I shall sell as soon as it will fetch a better price. I wish you would inform me how low you can afford to sell it
p 2. In the October 11th supplement she notes that she has been waiting to see if she receives another letter before replying. She also notes how physically hard life generally is: I have been waiting all the last week hoping to receive another letter from Rotterdam as I have not I shall send this tonight as I think you must soon arrive and I cannot think of not having a letter there ready for you it gives me much pleasure in thinking that you will soon be where I can often write you if I cannot see you. My health for a few days has been poor and I do not expect will be any better as the cold weather is coming on. I can only say I hope to have patience and submission to bear all that is allotted me in the life there have been a number of deaths of late in this town
p 3. The letter bears a stamp confirming receipt in Baltimore October 31st and the remnants of a red wax seal. For a historian especially one interested in the maritime history of the United States this letter is a direct connection to those times. It is rich in details of family life and offers an insight into what the life of a seafarers family would be like. For a gender studies program it offers an excellent insight into the lives of the wives and families of seafaring men who were gone from home for extensive amounts to time. The United States has a strong maritime heritage especially around the great fishing and whaling fleets of New England. This letter is a direct link to those wooden ships and iron men and to the women who kept families and homes together while they were gone. It would be a wonderful addition to a private collection or maritime archive. The document is a single sheet measuring approximately 10.0x16.0 inches and then folded in half to create four pages. The first two pages constitute a letter written on October 4th 1840 and page 3 is a continuation of that written on October 11th. The reverse is the name of the recipient and address. The letter is in generally good condition. There is a small portion along the outer edge of pages 3 & 4 measuring approximately 1.0 inch by 5.0 inches which has been torn away.
