‎1816. Very Good. 1 leaf folded dated Sept. 2 1816 from John Johnson Sussex Brigade Judge Advocate addressed to Jacob S. Thomson Brigade Paymaster Marksborough Marskboro N.J. Thomson is asked to collect the $50 fine from Captain Thomas M. Armstrong. Jacob S. Thomson was the paymaster of the Sussex Brigade in New Jersey. On July 2 Captain Thomas M. Armstrong had been found guilty of disobedience of orders and unbecoming conduct to his superior officer. The judge John Johnson 1764-1829 represented Sussex Co. in the New Jersey Assembly in 1804 and 1805 and was a judge of the Court of Common Pleas from 1816 to 1825. ‎Commission from Adjutant General Thomas H. Cushing for Doctor Alexander Blair as Surgeon's Mate with Pennsylvania's 5th Regiment of Infantry‎

‎1812. Good . 1 leaf folded into 4 pages with handwritten signed letter on one page dated 23 Dec. 1812 Washington City. In response to a letter from Doctor Alexander Blair in Buffalo N.Y. Cushing enclosed his commission as surgeon's mate with Pennsylvania's 5th Regiment of Infantry. The commission is not present. Thomas Humphrey Cushing 1755-1822 fought during the American Revolution; he was adjutant and inspector general of the Army in 1797 1798 and from 1800 to 1807. In 1811 he was arrested and court martialed on charges of disobedience and misuse of government funds; a year later he was acquitted on most of the charges and received an official reprimand. Two months later on July 2 1812 he was promoted to brigadier general. He served as adjutant general of the Army from July 6 1812 to March 12 1813. After that he was made commander of Military District No. 1; after the war he retired from the Army and was soon appointed collector of cusoms for the port of New London Conn. Alexander Blair 1789-1830 had just completed his medical studies and opened an office and drug store in Washington Pa. in the spring of 1812; after war was declared in June 1812 he applied for a commission as a surgeon's mate which he recieved. He was promoted to surgeon in March 1814; after the war ended in 1815 he returned to Washington Pa. In Good Condition: creased; paper is browned and slightly discolored; starting to separate along folds; chip out of one side without loss of text. unknown‎

‎1803. Very Good -. 1 leaf 15 x 20 cm. received on June 18 1804 signed "W. Dundas." William Dundas 1762-1845 was a Scottish politician who served in Parliament for many years and as Secretary at War from 1804 to 1806. He asks that Lord Hawkesbury be told that these three men had been commissioned officers of the Wanlockhead Company of Pioneers on Nov. 8 1803. They were: Gilbert Laing captain; John Taylor lieutenant; and John Bramwell ensign. These were 3 of the 110 men from the Wanlockhead mines in Scotland who had volunteered to provide gunpower tools and men for the defense of the country against attack by Napoleon. ‎1834. Very Good . 4 printed enlistment slips for the Ulster Artillery Sugerties Ulster County N.Y. The smaller one has an engraved eagle holding arrows and a shield in the upper left corner and is filled out by Captain C. Hoyt for the enlistment of William W. Conyes on June 4 1834. The larger filled-in one had an engraved eagle in the center standing on a shield and looking to the right; it was filled out by Captain Conyes for the enlistment of Peter B. Ransom on June 13 1840. The other two have an engraved eagle in the center holding arrows and a shield and looking to the left; they have not been used. ‎New York: J. M. Hager 1865. Paperback. Very Good . 32 p.: illustrations; 15 cm. Sewn; grey wrapper with portrait of J. M. Hager. Wrapper title and copyright statement. "Matthews & Warren Stereotypers & Printers Buffalo N.Y." Inside front wrapper and both sides of back wrapper have advertisements for Steinway & Sons pianos and Carhart Needham & Co.'s organs. Pages 1 2 and 14-16 also contain Steinway & Sons advertisements; last page contains advertisement for the Florence reversible feed sewing machine. Contains the lyrics of the choruses and text of dialogues telling the story of the American Civil War. Written by Henry Morford 1823-1881 this dramatic depiction ends with the assasination of President Abraham Lincoln the ascension of Andrew Johnson to the presidency and a "Grand Tableau of Peace." A version of this first appeared in 1863 during the war. There are also several later expanded editions of this work. This is the first edition published after the conclusion of the war and the assassination of Lincoln. Very scarce. ‎John W. Hemig Diaries -- 4 advertising notebooks and diaries used by Philadelphia waiter 1916-1920‎

‎1916. Hardcover. Good. John W. Hemig 1891-1978 was born in Reading Pa.; by 1916 he had moved to Philadelphia where he worked as a waiter and assistant manager at Schwoerer's cafe on Market St. through 1930 or later. In that year the census indicates that his wife was Elsie and though he could read and write he had not attended college. He used these four advertising notebooks and diaries to records information about his life from 1916 to 1920. 1 Central Trust Co. diary. approx. 80 p.: illustrations tables; 10 cm. Calf with Central Trust Company emblem gilt-stamped on front cover. All page edges gilt. Endpapers are light green printed in blue. Front free endpaper has illustration of the Central Trust Company Camden N.J. and list of officers and directors. On Dec. 31 1915 Hemig noted that he played his last game of pool per his New Year's resolution. However this is crossed out and on Jan. 7 he notes that he played pool. In June 1916 he notes the Admen's Parade and in Nov. he notes the election of Woodrow Wilson. For most of the year he records his work hours. In Very Good Condition: edges rubbed; first leaf has closed tear; solid. <br/> 2 W.J. McCahan Sugar Refining Co. advertising notebook. Philadelphia: W.J. McCahan Sugar Refining Co. 1915. 6 101 7-13 p.; 11 cm. Full calf with name of company embossed on front cover. Calendars attached to inside of cover. No date of publication; includes calendars for 1916 and 1917. W.M. McCahan a grocer established a molasses house in 1873 which he converted into a sugar refinery in 1892. In 1920 it was sold to a Cuban sugar refiner Czarnikow-Rionda Co. and became W.J. McCahan Sugar Refining and Molasses Co. which in 1944 was sold to the American Sugar Refining Co. becoming the Philadelphia Refining Co. In addition to the calendars the book contains information on the products sold by McCahan statistics on world sugar prices over many years and various type of business information. The unpaginated pages are graph paper where Hemig recorded the sale of pies throughout Philadelphia. In Good Condition: leather is heavily rubbed with minor loss at head of spine; occasional staining and soiling. 3 Diary 1917 Atlas & Manual. 128 p.: tables color maps; 14 cm. Light green cloth over light card cover with black stamped cover title. No publication information. All pages red. Corners rounded. The diary portion of this small book contains ruled pages with one week per page as well as some memoranda pages. Hemig wrote his draft number on the front free endpaper verso. He recorded his hours of work; visiting his family in Reading; the death of Buffalo Bill; the death of his father; and the declaration of war against Germany. In Jan. "the Boss forbid us to take tips." On June 5 Hemig placed a patriotic sticker and wrote "Must Redgister for War" but on July 4 "Examined for Army I did not Pass." In Good Condition: cover is soiled; starting to split over back joint. 4 The Excelsior Diary 1913. approx. 200 p.: tables; 13 cm. Leather flap binding with "Excelsior Diary" gilt-stamped on the flap. All page edges marbled. The first 28 pages contain one month per page and then the usual useful information including interest tables and a weekly table of wages. The remainder of the book contains lined paper arranged as a diary with two days per page. On the first few pages Hemig recorded candy recipes; his diary entries start on the Jan. 20 page with an entry for May 10 1920 indicating that he had started a new job and the circus was in town. Entries continue for a month or so then nothing until pages printed for Nov. and Dec. Final pages contain pages lined for accounting with some used. In Good Condition: flap is detached but present; spine is rubbed with loss of leather; pages are clean and tight. hardcover‎

‎West Point N.Y. 1910. Near Fine. 2 p.; 18 x 14 cm. Typed response to a query from H. Stuart Watts New York City on stationary headed "West Point N.Y." Major General Thomas H. Barry 1855-1919 served on the western frontier and in the Philippines in the Spanish American War and was President of the Army War College and Superintendent of the Military Academy 1910-1912. Later he commanded in Cuba China and Philippines and served in France in World War I. In this short letter signed "Thomas H. Barry" he recounts his ranks from cadet at West Point to Major General. ‎Salem N.J. 1840. Hardcover. Good. approx. 650 p.; 41 cm. Remains of original leather binding. Ledger book of David Smith Darmon 1815-1879 a saddler in Salem N.J. The first part of the ledger begins on April 15 1840 and goes to Feb. 26 1858 in Salem N.J. The next page is headed "Philadelphia July 16 1859." The Philadelphia entries run through March 1860. The next page is headed "The Regular Book of Entries Belonging to David S. Darmon" and starts with April 11 1865 in Salem N.J. This suggests that the business had been taken over by David Smith Darmon one of the sons of David Smith Darmon 1815-1879 the latter generally known as Smith Darmon. This section runs to April 1875. The next section begins in Salem in Feb. 1889 but does not identify the person who "Commenced business this date." It runs to the beginning of 1892. The final section contains entries from the 1870s. David Smith Darmon 1815-1879 worked with leather as well as renting out horses and carriages. The entries run from making 16 handles for fire buckets for the Union fire Co. to hiring out a horse and sulky. A rare record of a mid-19th-century New Jersey business. In Good Condition: lacking leather from spine; front board is detached but present; back board is almost detached; front free endpaper is detached with loss from lower section without loss of writing; otherwise the pages are solid with occasional soiling or fading. hardcover‎

‎1944. Hardcover. Very Good. Consists of 1 ledger 39 cm. sold by Schiff Bros. Philadelphia. Red cloth spine and corners with gilt-stamped border; black morrocco-grain cloth over boards. After original use as a business ledger the first 13 pages were used as a scrapbook for newspaper clippings from 1937 about the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Includes articles by Reginald Sweetland H. R. Ekins James A. Mills M. W. Fodor Kingsbury Smith Morris J. Harris and A. T. Steele as well as war photographs. Pages 14-42 contain accounts for a mattress company from June 1921 to Dec. 1922 with payments to Hudson Mattress Girard Bed Altona Mattress Philadelphia Cotton Co. Eagle Bed and Enterprise Bed among others. Flipping the volume upside down and starting from the back pages 89-152 were used to hold The Mediaeval Castle by Hal Foster cut out of a newspaper and attached to the pages. Also six full pages with Prince Valiant by Harold R. Foster from 1942 are folded and housed loose in the ledger. The Medieval Castle was published from April 23 1944 to Nov. 18 1945. ‎West Point Account Book and 6 documents relating to his Military Service‎

‎1865. Hardcover. Good. The West Point account book of William Gerhard while a cadet 1865-1869 and 6 documents relating to his military service. William Gerhard 1847-1914 of Philadelphia was the son of Benjamin Gerhard 1811-1864 and Anna Sergeant Gerhard 1815-1873. He married Sally Lyle Howell 1855-1879 and they had one child Arthur Howell Gerhard 1877-1949. He was appointed a cadet on Sept. 8 1864 and was at West Point from June 1865 through June 1869 when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieut in the 9th United States Cavalry on June 15. He served in Texas from Oct. 1869 until he resigned on September 30 1874 having been promoted to 1st Lieut on Nov. 19 1873. Following his military service he was a manufacturer of chains and anchors in Ardmore Pa. and then a senior member of Empire Chain Works Philadelphia Pa. The account book is the original calf-bound book issued by West Point showing Gerhard's monthly expenses for items from the commisary and other expenses for the 4 years he was a cadet. With handwritten paper label on the front cover: "Cadet William Gerhard June 1865." The additional documents consist of: 1 a handwritten letter reporting "Gen. Meade took Willie Gerhard to see the President to ask for an appointment at West Point" and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton subsequently making the appointment; 2 printed letter of appointment for Gerhard signed by Stanton and dated Sept. 8 1864; 3 official appointment with blue seal to take effect July 1 1865 signed by Edwin M. Stanton and dated Feb. 22 1866 sic; 4 Gerhard's appointment as Second Lieut. in the 9th Regiment of Cavalry signed by Secretary of War John A. Rawlins and dated June 24 1869; 5 a leave of absence for 3 months for Gerhard signed by Adjutant General E. D. Townsend and dated June 23 1869; and 6 Gerhard's promotion to 1st Lieut. of the 9th Regiment of Cavalry signed by Secretary of War Wm. W. Belknap and dated Nov. 29 1873. The handwritten letter is unsigned but attributed to James Cornell Biddle 1835-1898 which is consistent with the letter. ‎5 letters 1873-1879 to William Ward 1837-1895 re: Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad‎

‎1873. Near Fine. 5 handwritten letters to William Ward 1873-1879 regarding the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad which existed from 1872 to 1885; it was succeeded by the Philadelphia Midland Railroad. William Ward was one of the organizers of the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad and in 1874 was the president and treasurer pro tem. Letters #1 and #2 Sept. 5 and Dec. 5 1873 are from Jos. H. McKeehan an attorney in Philadelphia who is writing about deliquent subscribers to the railroad. Letter #3 Dec. 18 1873 is from the Village Record a newspaper in West Chester Pa. with a copy of the advertisement that ran in the paper listing the dates that instalments from railroad subscribers were due in 1872. Letter #4 Nov. 26 1875 is from John Smith of Ridley Park about a plan to petition to vacate a street and public ground adjoining Mr. Bartol's purchase. Letter #5 Sept. 8 1879 from the superintendant of the Government Paper Mill in Dalton Mass. complaining about the appointment of counters and watchmen at the mill presumably to Ward as a congressman. William Ward 1837-1895 studied law and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1859. He opened a practice in Chester; was involved in real estate and banking; served as a member of the Chester city council and as city solicitor; and was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Delaware County in the 45th 46th and 47th Congresses 1877-1883. No date of publication. Information in the publication goes up to 1858. Lawyer and judge Garrick Mallery 1784-1866 served in the Pennsylvania legislature from 1827 to 1830 and was chairman of the Committee of Ways and Means when the Bank of Pennsylvania was rechartered in 1830. He was the father of Garrick Mallery 1831-1894 an ethnologist who specialized in Native American sign language. This publication relating to the demise of the Bank of Pennsylvania during the financial panic of 1857-1858 is very scarce.
