Handwritten 1941 Diary of a Wife and Mother in Pre-Wwii California
Santa Rosa CA. Very Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is a fine diary recording the domestic and social responsibilities of a woman in California immediately before the United States entered World War II. The author is unknown but from the diary we learn that she lives in or near Santa Rosa CA is a wife and a mother and is 49 when she begins this book. Her entries are detailed and she takes care to provide a very good description of how each day unfolds. The author is very focused on her family and seems to fit many of the traditional expectations of women of her time. Throughout the diary she refers to her husband as Dad. Washed and dried clothes between showers -- dried colors in the house. Pot luck dinner at Social Hall tonite at 6: 30 -- thats too early for us so we didnt plan to go -- dad went later to Council meeting -- they plan to call this Mr. Moorhouse to be our next Pastor -- at $1500 per year. He may not want to come April 1. Have been with mother quilting this eve ironing done and clothes put away had to shop for eats June 24. Have been to Daisys to have hair washed and set. Corn cut from cob & put out to dry in the sun -- have it in the oven this eve . . . Mother picked a few quarts of blackberries -- we dont care very much for them but so far have canned what she has picked they are doing extra well this summer August 20. This diary is a perfect window into the world of an American wife and mother immediately before the Second World War. 1949 Diary of a Stoic Liverpool New York Widow and Woman of Faith Making Ends Meet by Keeping the Homes of Others
Liverpool New York. Fair with no dust jacket. 1949. Softcover. On offer is the simple diary of Eva Mae Bender Eaton 1887-1969. Eva was born in upstate New York to parents Wilson and Clara Rowe Bender. She married Ransford Chas Eaton 1878-1939 in 1908. Between 1913 and 1918 Eva and Ransford had three children Francis Eugene and Howard. In 1927 they had baby Lois who died at age 17 after a long illness. Eva kept this diary five years after Lois died and 10 years after she was widowed. Eva writes most every day of 1949. She writes only the facts of what occurred each day betraying absolutely no emotion even when writing on the 5th anniversary of her daughters death July 4 1949. However her entries paint the picture of a 57-year-old woman who is hanging on and surviving all alone finding moments of joy in outings when possible. While Eva has three living adult children she doesnt mention them. The only names she writes are those of her employers - local women who have given her work - and their children for whom she provides care. She works long days as a domestic helper
and then she returns to her own home and continues working to maintain the house. In some cases Eva writes of working for the same women she socializes with. Although Eva had only a sixth grade education she made the most of her skills. She was a deeply religious woman and despite toiling all week long she was a devout church-goer on Sundays. I worked for Mrs. Pfohl from 9 AM until 3 PM and stopped at Marys house on the way home Jan 13. .I painted the bed in the small bedroom in the AM and ironed all PM and evening Mar 27. Fair and cool. I worked for Mrs. Montague from 9 AM til 3 PM. Mary and I went to show in the evening . Saw Family Honeymoon Mar 31. Slight rain and cool. I worked for Ella Mae in AM and stayed with Ednas children in PM while her and Mary went to Memorial Hospital
Apr 23. Decoration Day. We went to see Parade in AM. I went to cemetery and washed in the PM May 30. Fair and mild. I did our wash and did Mrs. Gettimans wash in PM. Helen went to city shopping. Rained in PM and night Sept 19. While her entries are simple the rhythm of Evas life gives a sense of her intense focus on survival and finding joy in the small moments. This diary provides a clear picture of a widow who never established herself independently before the death of her husband now doing what it takes to get by. This small volume contains 52 pages and is 100% complete. It measures 6.25 inches by 4.0 inches. The covers are intact but there is notable surface damage to the front cover. 1915 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG CHARMING PERSONABLE TORONTO MAN PREPARING TO TRAVEL OVERSEAS AND FIGHT THE HUNS
TORONTO ONTARIO CANADA. Good. 1915. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of World War I training taking place in Toronto Canada in 1915 handwritten by the entertaining erudite and personable John F.P. Tate of Macpherson Avenue in Toronto. Originally 14th Battery Canadian Field Artillery then transferred to Canadian Railway Overseas Construction Corps May 5th 1915. Dated January 16th through June 12th John shines as he details with a great deal of verve his experiences. He also does a good job of detailing some of old Toronto. We learn a great deal of his duties and free time activities which include training at the Exhibition Camp where he spends his time dealing with field guns riding and training horses especially to get them used to gunfire stabling and caring for the horses musketry training field manoeuvres in Humber Valley and the Old Mill brigade parade at St. Paul's and much much more. Here are some snippets: 2.26.15 "The society after some weeks deliberation felt that it could scarcely permit another day to pass without showing in some material way its recognition of my worth hence my installation as President of the stable." 3.3.15 "After this AMs gun drill I have had enough practice to enable me to do it in my sleep. Had a lecture from the crazy man on lines of fire." 4.15.15 "My liver lungs stomach and heart were one vibrating churning mass when I underwent the usual ordeal of martyrdom on the limber foot drill." 4.16.15 "That malformed swine again. Removed a ton of ice from around the stable top with a pick. Froze to death on the lake front to gratify Cliffie's whim." 4.17.15 "Won the admiration of many by the way I didn't fulfill my duty when posted as sentry on Strachan Ave gate." 6.11.15 "Busy to day. Detailed to superintend loading of hold no. 1 SS Herschell. Had six wharf rats under my guidance whose wholehearted aversion to work appealed to me more in a humorous light than an irritating one. Am beginning to be able to feel very keenly for them." SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA CA. Good. 1906. On offer is a sensational original 1906 manuscript diary handwritten by a young man named Jasper W. O'Farrell who we believe was the son or grandson of Jasper O'Farrell a famed early San Francisco resident surveyor land holder and Senator. There are streets in San Francisco named after him and a chain of eateries! All the more fascinating is the narrative by the young O'Farrell who lived through the notorious earthquake of 1906. Writing in fits and spurts throughout about a third of the book he does a good job detailing the tragedy of the earthquake and the wreckage it caused even the destruction of his own home. An interesting counterpoint to his entries on the massive earthquake are his writings of trips including going to Yosemite for several days. Here are some snippets: "Today we all went to the Cliff Hose and had refreshments at the M&M Hotel. In the evening we all went to Mrs Moffats and spent the evening

Took another walk downtown at 2 AM saw the Hopkins Institute and Mrs Stanford's home catch on fire. The city is just one great big mass of flames
The city looks awful. The people are cooking on the streets. Tante was at the house when we got there. Walked all over and took photos of different places
We had lunch at some place on Fillmore St we will leave tonight for Sacramento. We walked around and later on went over to Oakland to see Evelyn. We came home early and packed our grips. We rode down to the ferry in a coal wagon. Got to Sacramento at 10:30 PM all the hotels were crowded and we had to go to the Hamand Bath House for the night
Yosemite
We got up early today put on my walking clothes and we started out for the Vernaland Nevada Falls with our lunch. It is a walk of about 14 odd miles. We arrived at Vernal Falls first. We then went through the spray of the Vernal Falls and walked on to the top of the Nevada Falls. They are perfectly grand. The scenery up here is elegant
After lunch we walked to the Lost Arrow Trail while there it began to rain. We paid no attention to that and sat and watched a man fishing for trout
Yosemite started out for Glacier Point. We arrived at Union Pt at 10:30 AM here we rested awhile in a cabin we built a fire in the stove and melted snow for drinking water
We went over to the Glacier Point Hotel but it was closed no one was in it we broke down one of the windows got in the hotel and got a stack of provisions which we brought back to the cabin. On our way back we sat on our coats and coasted down the sides of the snow covered hills
We passed the Bridal Veil Falls and saw the rainbow which was perfectly beautiful. In the eve we all sat and listened to Mr Hancock relate his different experiences
This AM we took a walk to the foot of Yosemite Falls. They like everything else in the valley are beautiful
I took a horseback ride to the Cascades and then to the power house
Today we took a walk up to Mirror Lake and had our photos taken. Later we walked to the happy Isles and had an early lunch

1918 NEW YEAR'S EVE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ALS HANDWRITTEN BY A CANADIAN SOLDIER VETERAN OF VIMY RIDGE AND PASSCHENDAELE ON BLIGHTY LEAVE COMPLAINING TO HIS GIRLFRIEND OF THE HIGH AND MIGHTY 'YANKS' AND MORE
LONDON ENGLAND. Very Good. 1918. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of World War I being an autograph letter handwritten by Karl George Lees a Canadian soldier L/Cpl 769012 while he was on "Blighty leave" in England New Year's Eve 1918. There is some very interesting content in this letter including some strong criticism of the American contingent: the "Yanks." Lees arrived in France in March 1917 with the 124th Canadian Infantry Battalion Pioneer; The Governor General's Body Guard. He served at the Western Front in March 1918 in the 124th until that battalion was absorbed into the Canadian Engineers on 25th May 1918. He spent the remainder of the war in France and Belgium. He was present at the victories at Vimy Ridge Passchendaele and others including the "Hundred Days" in 1918. This letter is addressed to his girlfriend Miss Lucy Routledge of Oak Ridges Ontario who was a student nurse at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Originally from England Lees was spending his leave at the home of his family in London. His brother had been killed in action shortly before the armistice leaving behind a widow and two young children. This five 5 page letter perfectly exemplifies the attitude that Karl had become like many Canadian British French and other allied soldiers perturbed by the perception that the American army had been the decisive element in achieving final victory. In this letter he writes: "We got to London about 14:30 and were in time to see a naval squad coming from Buckingham Palace way with fixed bayonets and on making enquiries found out that President Wilson was visiting and passing through Trafalgar Square. We got over to the Square as soon as possible but were too late but the crowds were enormous and the Strand was decorated up mainly with 'Old Glory'. It gets my nanny to see and hear nothing but 'the Yanks' and 'the States.' Why when I was in Brussels they showed on the screen at one of the theatres the King of the Belgians naturally they clapped. Then King George and there was hardly a stir and then Wilson was put up and the house nearly went crazy made even more ovation than for King Albert. Why I could hardly have expected more if my portrait had been shown. The Yanks certainly think it pays to advertise." Aside from this this entire letter is about his journey through Belgium to the Channel and then to England. He writes in some detail about his frantic attempt to reach London by Christmas. He departed from his unit on December 23rd rode to Gembloux by saddle horse took a train to Namur then Mons to Boulogne grabbing rations whenever the opportunity arose: "They had a great way too of serving out the meals on the way down. Just before we reached Mons we were told that if an N.C.O. sent to the car a chit stating number of car and the number of men it contained we could draw breakfast. So I made it out and naturally added four more to the list and next morning I thought that we'd be getting breakfast about 8:00 but we finally got it at 11:30. We got the old reliable five to a tin of McConichie five to a loaf and go easy with the tea." There is more along these lines followed by his trip across the Channel to Folkestone and then to London in a First Class coach. This is quite an interesting letter. At Sea Aboard The Corby Castle. Good. 1899. On offer is the super original manuscript log and journal of the schooner 'Corby Castle' handwritten by we believe Captain Russell Edwards. A number of the first pages bear the heading with this name. The Captain writes a wonderful account of sea worthy events over 300 pages all having to do with the boat's travels in 1899 on this very busy ship traveling back and forth from Newport Gibraltar Malta Port Said Suez Colombo Alexandria Liverpool Karachi Rangoon Socotra Antwerp Flushing Galveston Barry and more. All matters technical and anecdotal relating to the ship cargo travels the ports-of-call are described in nautical lingo and one is transported to the high seas over 100 years ago. Here are some snippets that follow the numerical calculations the longitude and latitude entries lists of cargo and entries etc.: 1899 "January 16th Squalls fierce with heavy rain

There are so many entries like the ones above but he also got a rather sensitive side and one finds some poetry written in the front: "Kind messages that pass from land to land. Kind letters that betray the heart's deep history. In which we feel the pressure of a hand. One touch of fire and all the rest is mystery." "The words we do not say. Deeper then cords that search the soul and die mocking to ashes color's hot away. Closer then touch within our hearts they lie the words we do not say." He also mentions the other ships they see. The journal measures about 8 ¼" x 10 ½". SAN DIEGO LONG BEACH CALIFORNIA. Good. 1932. On offer is a super original 1932 through 1936 manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified Southern California young newlywed Navy wife traveling for the most part up and down the West Coast of America following her husband Glen who is stationed mostly in San Diego and Long Beach but does go to Bremerton Washington and some trips to the East Coast. Written right in the heart of the Great Depression the diary begins with the couple married a year and this is the year he is stationed in Bremerton. They take a road trip in April to Arizona New Mexico Texas Kansas Nebraska Illinois Wisconsin Iowa Wyoming Idaho and Oregon finally ending in Bremerton six weeks later. Not too long after it's back to southern California. We note many local references to events: in 1933 Long Beach experienced an earthquake which she mentions because the day before she drove from San Diego to Long Beach to attend the fights with Glen and sure enough the next night while at the fights the earthquake hit. She also writes of the California Pacific International Exposition that was held in San Diego starting in 1935 and also 1936. It was held at Balboa Park. World War Two WWII German Heer Soldier's Photo Album Featuring the German Military and Sites around Europe
Germany Poland Europe. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1939. On offer is an absolutely superb photo record of the work and travels of a German soldier across war torn Europe. The person who put this album together is a German soldier. He was a member of the Heer or Army one of the 3 elements of the Wehrmacht or National Defence Force. A separate element of the German military was the Shultzstaffel or Nazi Party paramilitary force. They were known and recognized by the abbreviation SS usually depicted as the distinctive lightening runes. They in turn had a combat force known as the Waffen SS. We know that he was an army soldier vs SS soldier by the insignia seen in all of the pictures. The standard badge of the Heer is the national tri-color cockade with a concentric black and white circles and a red central dot. And a red center dot This is present throughout the photos on many of his subjects. The Waffen SS deaths head badge or totenkopf is not found in any picture. Further he most likely was a member of an army engineering unit as one picture depicts the presentation of a Pioneer Engineering Battalion flag. The pictures were taken in widely different locations in Europe which also suggests an Engineering Unit as they were present in every theatre of war and area of occupation. The pictures provide a fascinating look at daily life in a combat. The pictures are almost exclusively of enlisted men. The pictures capture soldiers in a variety of circumstances. Many are engaged in parades or marches. Others are doing agricultural work. This is not an anomaly as the German government recognized that food production was a critical weakness and sought to remedy this. Other pictures showing the transfer of wounded soldiers onto hospital trains. Many show soldiers at rest or in casual circumstances several sitting at a table having a cup of coffee enjoying a beer with fellow soldiers group pictures of soldiers out in the streets. Some pictures can be geo-located. There are pictures taken in France as several show the Verdun Monument located in the north-eastern department of Meuse very close to the ruined village of Fleurydevant Douaumont. Another picture shows the evocative sculpture known as the Wounded Lion also in Fleury-devant Douaumont. Still another 32/1 shows the Douaumony Ossuary which contains the skeletal remains of at least 130000 unidentified combatants of both France and Germany. There is a picture of the Church of St. Elizabeth in the city of Marburg located in central Germany. There is a visible reference on the back of one photograph to the city of Wroclaw Poland. This city was originally in Germany and was known as Breslau. During World War II Breslau witnessed significant persecution of its Polish and Jewish population including deportations to forced labour and Nazi concentration camps Also tens of thousands of forced labourers and prisoners of war of various nationalities were imprisoned in multiple German labour camps and prisons throughout the city which would necessitate the presence of Engineering units. Another group of pictures are geo-located to Poland. Specifically there is a photograph of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa as well as other pictures taken in Czestochowa. Another picture is geolocated to the Polish city of Krakow. For a military historian this is a superb collection of authentic photographs that document aspects of the daily life of ordinary soldiers caught up in the greatest conflagration of modern history. This album measures 7.0 inches by 11.5. The covers are a black pebbled leather and are in good condition as is the binding. The binding is a white cord in good condition. Embossed on the front cover in white is the distinctive stahlhelm or steel helmet commonly referred to as the coal scuttle helmet The helmet bears the crest of the German army a German eagle holding a swastika in its talons known as the Reichsadler . The pages are in good condition. The album contains 154 black and white photographs that measure on average x by y inches. The pictures are mounted in the album. Some of the photos that have come loose from the mountings do have notations on the back but it is not possible to remove the photos that are not loose without damaging the album. 1874 Cuban Medical Manuscript Certificate for Soldier from the Militia of Disciplined Soldiers of Color

Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1 pages; On offer is a fascinating medical leave document stamped by the Milicias Disciplinadas de Color 1 Seccion First Section of the Militia of Disciplined Soldiers of Color. This manuscript is written to Don Garino Crupo and Salbom Furiente Colonel Commander of the first unit of the Militia of Color. The certificate indicates that it is certified that a soldier of this unit Guillermo Vasquez was seen at the hospital and has "poor configuration of the left leg" Translation. The certificate indicates that compensation is required. This certificate was written in 1874 in the midst of the Ten Years' War between Cuba and Spain the first of three wars Cuba fought against Spain for its independence. It was common during this period of Cuban history for people of African descent both slaves and free men to enlist in the Cuban militias. There was a large Black population in Cuba at this time. Cuba had a great need for inexpensive labour to support their sugar industry. While America and Britain signed a treaty in 1814 to abolish the African slave trade it took many years for complete global abolition. The African slave trade was not ended in Cuba until 1886 despite it being formally abolished in 1867 Yun & Laremont 2001. During the Chinese coolie trade 1847-1874 African slaves often worked alongside Chinese indentured labourers. This medical certificate is folded to measure approx 8x6 inches. It is one folio leaf folded in half. The writing is on the recto of the first page. It is in very good condition exhibiting age toning and is otherwise in great shape. Spanish language. 1866 Complete Criminal Investigation with Sworn Testimonies of 13 Chinese Coolies Who Sailed to Havana Aboard the French Ship Amaril Trehouart Featuring Discussion of Opium Aboard the Ship

On offer is a string-bound 22 page police investigation into the deaths of 33 Chinese people aboard the French coolie ship Amaril Trehouart which sailed from Macao to Havana arriving in March of 1866. The Amaril was a French vessel that made two crossings during the Chinese coolie trade. This document relates to its November 29 1865 departure run by Captain P. Cotte on which 313 Chinese people boarded and 280 arrived alive in Havana on March 15 1866. This reflected a 10.5% death rate on this voyage. The Amaril was owned and operated by the Campbell brothers who made this shipment in collaboration with the Carbaga brothers. This document is dated March 16 1866 the day after the vessel arrived in Havana. The first page is stamped Sur Comisaria de Policia del Quinto Distrito South Police Station of the Fifth District. It introduces the ship and the investigation and presents the order to interrogate the 13 newly arrived Chinese from the Amaril. The second page which discusses the investigation is stamped by the Cuban police. This investigation is criminal in nature looking into any violence against Chinese passengers. The Chinese people that are questioned in the investigation are being kept in a Depository where they will be kept until their contracts are sold to a plantation owners. The next several folio pages are transcriptions of the questions and answers given to and by each of the 13 interviewed Chinese coolies. The information covered in each interrogation include the name and origin of the person their reason for coming to the Island always an 8 year primitive contract whether there was food given and more. In all cases the coolies reported that food was abundant. However one coolie folio p. 4 reports that they water they drank made them sick. It is also reported that they were given opio opium to smoke. There is also a report that the sick were separated from the good healthy people. In the manuscript conclusion at the end of the report it is reported that 30 colonos perished they ate cold food and no opium to smoke. Given what we know about the deplorable conditions of coolie trade ship transport it is believed that much of these testimonies were highly coerced and manipulated to show the ship in a positive light. The Chinese coolie trade a system of indentured labor that targeted young poor Chinese men operated from 1847-1874. The coolie trade took place in large part between the shipping port in Macao now a part of China then under Portuguese rule and Havana Cuba then under Spanish control. Coolies were transported from China on ships many of which had formerly been used as African slave ships Yun & Laremont 2001. The coolie ships often had slave names eg Africano Mauritius or ironic names Dreams Hope Live Yankees Wandering Jew Yun & Laremont 2001 p. 110. Many did not survive the journey with approximately 16400 Chinese coolies dying on European and American coolie ships to Cuba during a 26-year period Yun & Laremont 2001 p. 111-112. This accounted for a mortality rate of 12-30% though on some voyages the death rate reached 50% as in the case of the Portuguese ship Cors in its 1857 sailing. These deaths were caused by violence rebellions thirst suffocation and sickness Yun & Laremont 2001. 1867 Rare Contract for the "Rental" of an Emancipated Slave in Havana Cuba
Havana Cuba. Good with no dust jacket. 1867. Non-Book. On offer is a rare contract from the Administration of Central Depot of the Emancipated stating the terms of a slave rental commencing in 1867. This contract was made for an emancipated slave named Fammouf Luciano of the Congo. He is to be rented by one Francisco de Salaz. The contract is signed July 8 1867. A highlight of this particular rental contract is the name of the Expedition during which this particular African slave was found which was the "Sancti Espiritus and Trinidad". The contract is signed by the Salaz who will rent this man and witnesses. This rental contract is extremely rare and a remarkable though tragic piece of the history of the Cuban slave trade. To think that this man was emancipated and yet was able to be rented out once again is heartbreaking and provides yet another piece of the puzzle of Cuban slavery history. Cuba had a great need for inexpensive labour to support their sugar industry. While America and Britain signed a treaty in 1814 to abolish the African slave trade it took many years for complete global abolition. The African slave trade was not ended in Cuba until 1886 despite it being formally abolished in 1867 Yun & Laremont 2001. The details of this contract closely align with contracts of Chinese coolie labourers and the printed nature of this contract implies that many emancipated African slaves were contracted following their emancipation. Based on knowledge of the contracted Chinese labourers we know that conditions for indentured workers were equal to or worse than those of slaves. This document is printed and filled out in ink. It is one page with the manuscript content on the recto of a single sheet and typed terms of the contract on the verso. It measures 8x12 inches. In this case the ads list 41 specific needs for slaves as requested by Cuban owners. This document contains three pages of listings mostly describing the need for slaves to purchase or rent though there are some variations within the listings. There are multiple listings for Cubans seeking "emancipated slave s to rent" one looking for a specific named black female negra someone returning a slave from the island of Dominica a listing about multiple negros being consigned to a College a notice about sending a Black man pardo to jail a notice of 15 slaves being available for rental and much more. This document is remarkable in its depth of information about the slave trade is it in the 1870s which was running consecutively with the Chinese coolie trade. This ad was likely posted in a Town Hall or similar. Cuba had a great need for inexpensive labour to support their sugar industry. Nietzsche also attended and their meeting resulted in later invitations. Zimmern spent a few weeks in Sils Maria in the summer of 1886 where Nietzsche used to reside in the summer months in those years. Their discussions in this summer must have helped Zimmern quite a lot when later translating Jenseits of which she got 2 presentation copies. The last favorable publication of Nietzsche on Wagner followed by bitter attacks in FALL WAGNER and NIETZSCHE CONTRA WAGNER. The 4th and last Observation a series originally. The second Unconventional Observation attacked the then current faith in historical research that was one of Nietzsche's major complaints with contemporary German culture and a topic to which he returned with some regularity in his later works. Contrary to prevailing opinion Nietzsche argued that historical knowledge is valuable only when it has a positive effect on human beings sense of life contending that history can play only three positive roles which he termed the "monumental" the "antiquarian" and "critical" explaining each of these in some detail before going on to enumerate the dangers of the current scholarly fascination with "history for its own sake." Finally Nietzsche suggests an antidote to the psychologically and ethically devastating effects of the conventional approaches to history proposing an amalgam of what he terms the historical the unhistorical and the suprahistorical attitudes as the healthiest approach to the integration of a historical sense into the life of the individual and of course for Nietzsche this always means the exceptional individual. As he remarks in the present essay tellingly for the understanding of the Nietzschean philosophy as a whole: The goal of humanity cannot lie in the end Ende but only in its highest specimens. 1863 Cuban Cedula for Chinese Coolie Labourer with Rare Manuscript Note Indicating He is Now Free
Havana Cuba. Fair with no dust jacket. 1863. Non-Book. On offer is an important document from the Chinese coolie trade being a cedula identification card for a Chinese man who was called Martin from Asia dated March 6 1863. The cedula indicates that Martin is working an eight year contract in Havana. What makes this particular cedula so rare is a manuscript note on the back dated in Havana on July 24 1863 which indicates that this coolie is being set free from his promise to work and that there will be indemnization. The cedula is a typed form stamped by the Government of Havana and filled in ink with Martins details. The form contains information about the cedula its purpose and consequences of not carrying it. It has a pre-printed signature of a Cuban official at the bottom. The manuscript note about the coolies freedom is hand-signed by F. De la Cava. This cedula provides a glimpse into the documentation required by coolies brought to Cuba to work as indentured servants and paints a picture of the conditions in which these coolies lived and worked. The Chinese coolie trade a system of indentured labor that targeted young poor Chinese men operated from 1847-1874. The coolie trade took place in large part between the shipping port in Macao now a part of China then under Portuguese rule and Havana Cuba then under Spanish control. Coolies were transported from China on ships many of which had formerly been used as African slave ships Yun & Laremont 2001. The coolie ships often had slave names eg Africano Mauritius or ironic names Dreams Hope Live Yankees Wandering Jew Yun & Laremont 2001 p. 110. Many did not survive the journey with approximately 16400 Chinese coolies dying on European and American coolie ships to Cuba during a 26-year period Yun & Laremont 2001 p. 111-112. This accounted for a mortality rate of 12-30% though on some voyages the death rate reached 50% as in the case of the Portuguese ship Cors in its 1857 sailing. These deaths were caused by violence rebellions thirst suffocation and sickness Yun & Laremont 2001. 1880 Cedula De Vecindad for a Matanzas Native Visiting the United States
Matanzas Cuba. Fair with no dust jacket. 1880. Non-Book. On offer is an identification document a Cedula de vecindad for a Cuban from Matanzas who is traveling to the United States. It is referred to as a passport on the document. The cedula is a typed form dated 1880 filled in with ink. It includes identifying details of the Matanzas man D. Leoncio Junico. On the recto is a manuscript note dated 1881 indicating that the man is traveling to the USA. It is signed by a Cuban official and Junico. This cedula is from the early post-slavery era in Cuba and provides insight into the documents required by the average citizen at the time. Chinese Coolies and Cuban Officials
1866 Cuban Police Investigation with Sworn Testimonies of 20 Chinese Coolies Who Sailed to Havana Aboard the German Ship Ammerland

On offer is a unique string- bound manuscript folio containing a complete Cuban police investigation into the deaths of Chinese coolies aboard the German ship Ammerland on its voyage from Macao to Havana. The document contains a summary of the case the introduction of the witnesses and translators involved 20 testimonies by Chinese coolies which are signed by the Chinese men being questioned and those conducting the interviews as well as concluding pages summarizing the findings of the investigation. The case relates to the German ship Ammerland. She departed Macao on January 5 1866 with 225 Chinese men on board and arrived in Havana on May 17 1866 with 201 living passengers. This was a loss rate of 10.67% for this sailing. Interestingly this police investigation folio states that there was only a 6% loss rate for the sailing. The Cuban police investigated the on-board deaths. The first two pages introduce the case. There is a seal on the first page that reads Capitania del Partido de Puentes Grandes. The ship owners the Zangroniz family nominated two witnesses to follow the investigation into their ships loss rate. These were Dn. Francsco Cerdu and Don Valentiin de la Cabada. Both of their signatures are present in the document. There were also two interpreters appointed of the same class race as the Chinese men. They were Luis Aldecoa and Francisco Achon. Their signatures are also present. The following pages include testimonies of 20 of the asiaticos Asian people transcribed in Spanish with signatures from both the Spanish investigators and the Chinese man being questioned. The first Chinese witness is identified as being a non-Christian. He was Lam-pon-lim from the town of Sancho age 30. Lam-pon-lim states he came as a colonist brought by the Zangroniz y Compania de la Habana. He was there to fulfill a contract. He claims the ship he came on was capable ventilated and there was water healthy food in abundance a doctor and medicine and that he does not believe the mortality on board was caused by this good treatment. The rest of the testimonies are in a similar vein with only slight changes to the wording. For example the fourth witness Yong Tong a native of Sennen and age 18 makes similar statements to Lam-pon-lim but adds that his treatment was very good. Given what we know about the deplorable conditions of coolie trade ship transport it is believed that these testimonies were highly coerced and manipulated to show the ship in a positive light. The final two pages of the folio state that the mortality on board the Ammerland was not due to mistreatment of passengers rather to pre-existing illnesses of the men on board. While we and others hold multiple examples of individual depositions from Chinese coolies it is exceptionally rare to find a complete example of a police investigation into one specific ship including the additional notes about the investigation and investigators. This piece would make an absolutely sensational addition to any academic research collection. ABOUT THE AMMERLAND: The Ammerland sailed for the Zangroniz Zangronis family a well-known family who participated in trafficking of human beings even before the Chinese coolie trade began. The Zangroniz y Compania trafficking business sent a total of 26 ships carrying coolies from Macao to Havana mostly using French ships with a few exceptions including the German Ammerland. The depositions measure approx 8.5x12.5 inches. There are 16 pages in the folio with manuscript writing on 27 pages writing on font and back of most pages. One diagonal corner 2 inch triangle missing from the final blank page. Age toning some ink bleed-through and fraying to the edges of the paper that do not impact readability. Legible. The draft is of a review of a Report on the Public Archives of Canada Written from the University of Toronto in pencil on both sides. Signed George W. Brown. Dated circa 1848 by mention of the appointment of Dr. W. K. Lamb as Dominion Archivist. BIO NOTES: George Williams Brown PhD LLD FRSC was a Canadian historian and editor. In 1925 joined the History Department at the University of Toronto where he taught Canadian and American History. From 1953 to 1954 he was Canadian visiting Commonwealth Fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs and the Institute of Commonwealth Studies University of London. He served as president of the Canadian Historical Association 1943-44 and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1945. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of British Columbia in 1952. In 1959 he retired and became Professor Emeritus and in the same year became the founding General Editor of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography DCB. A gold medal is presented annually in his name to the top graduating history student at Victoria College. A collection of Brown's papers in particular with reference to his involvement with the Canadian Historical Review is held in the York University Archives Toronto. Single sheet of lined paper 4to.
