‎1857 Remarkable ‘primitive’ Chinese and Spanish Indentured Labour Contract from the Macau to Havana Coolie Trade with Thumbprint Signatures of Labourer‎

On offer is a remarkable Chinese and Spanish ‘primitive’ contract for an Chinese indentured labourer known as a coolie in 1857 which had been sold to a plantation owner in Cuba where the man will begin working following his voyage from Macau to Havana. This contract is particularly rare as it features a thumbprint signature of the Chinese labourer Chen Yom on both the front and back of the contract. This contract was written for Cheom Yom age 19 of Defom China. It states in Portuguese on one side and Chinese on the other that Yom is agreeing to work for Dn. Rafael R. Torices in Cuba for eight years upon his arrival in Havana. The contract indicates the terms of Yom’s eight years of servitude discussing when he will work rest how his medical issues will be treated what money will be advanced to him by Torices clothing Torices will provide which Yom will pay for out of his wages and more. The contract is stamped with the seal of the Consulate General of Cuba and is signed in ink by A. R. Ferran Manuel Arito d’ Younga Procurador. It is also signed in Chinese and stamped with Yom’s fingerprint. Dated possibly March 7 1857 there is a handwritten Spanish note on the back of the contract indicating that Yom is being passed off upon his arrival in Havana and this note is dated June 20 1857. This correlates with the arrival of the Dutch vessel Christina which arrived in Havana from Macao on June 20 1857 indicating that Yom may have been aboard this ship. This contract provides evidence of the conditions Chinese coolie workers faced in the colonies where they were sent to work making it an essential piece of Chinese history. Primitive contracts were the first contracts offered to slaves following their emancipation. After completion of a primitive contract such as this one a contrata was offered. The Chinese coolie trade a system of indentured labor that targeted young poor Chinese men operated from 1847-1874. Throughout this period African slavery was slowly being abolished around the world. The coolie trade was initiated by Britain and was eventually dominated by both Britain and the United States of America. Chinese coolie laborers were sent to work in British American and Spanish colonies and the nature of the trade changed throughout its 27-year operation due to social and political pressures. The coolie trade took place in large part between the shipping port in Macao now a part of China then under Portuguese rule and Havana Cuba then under Spanish control. As Macau was under Portuguese rule at the time of the coolie trade they transported coolies on their vessels frequently and many of the documents related to the trade were written in Portuguese and/or Spanish. Text on both sides of the single folio leaf measuring 8x11.5 inches. The document exhibits age toning small rips and tears that do not impede readability and evidence of significant folds and creases. ‎1914 ORIGINAL WORLD WAR I MANUSCRIPT NOTEBOOK HANDWRITTEN BY A BRITISH NAVIGATION OFFICER SOON TO BE IN THE MOST NOTED NAVAL BATTLE OF THE WAR‎

‎Royal Navy Britain England United Kingdom. Good with no dust jacket. 1914. On offer is a fascinating literary relic from a ship that was involved in one of the great Naval battles of World War One kept by a lieutenant who would fight on this very ship in the significant Battle of Jutland. The journal is entitled Navigating Officer's Note Book. The owners name is not on the book just his ship. Research suggests that it belonged to Lieutenant Charles Hammill RN 1891-1980. This is the normal rank for a Navigating Officer and there are several other journals kept by Hammill that are extant. The notebook contains a number of sections showing Hammill’s trajectory as he trained for his role on the HMS Colossus. First is several pages of notes from Seamanship classes spanning February 1914 to August 1915. It opens with a list of names – likely class members. That is followed with a listing of topics studied and the hours spent on each: Splicing wire knots and splices lead line rules of the road anchors etc. Over the time period of February 16 through Oct 26 1914 he lists the various topics he has to study. The next section of the notebook contains handwritten details of the HMS Colossus: “Colossus – Particulars of Ship…Length between perpendiculars – 510 ft…Length Exterior – 546 ft.Breadth – 55 ft…Displacement 27 ft draught – 20000 tons…Fully loaded – 30 ft 6 in – 20300 tons…Horse Power – 25000 hp…” and the list continues for 10 pages. He makes six pages of notes about the various lines on board there are no ropes on a ship. He also discusses and provides definitions related to one of the most important books on board – the deck log: “The Deck Log Supplied for registering everything that happens on ship. Kept up-to-date by Officer Of Watch under Navigating Officer. Two logs in use. Fair and Rough. Fair kept by Navigating Officer. Rough kept in gangway by Quartermaster. In front pages you will find the following tables for registering the state of weather state of sea and force of wind…. ”What follows is a list of abbreviations that the Royal Navy used to record that information. He also notes the rules for operating various things on the ship with headings such as “Rules of the Road” “Fog Signals” “Fog Horn” “Collision Mat ” and a section describing all the rooms on the ship. This is a fine piece of naval history. A naval historian would find its description of training a useful piece of corroboration. A collector of militaria would appreciate that this notebook was most likely carried into one of the great naval battles of WWI. BIO NOTES AND HISTORY: In the run-up to WWI the Royal Navy constructed a number of new massive battleships. Named after the first such ships these 'dreadnoughts' revolutionized big-ship construction with their emphasis on size massive armament and steam propulsion. HMS Colossus was the lead ship of her class of two dreadnought battleships built for the Royal Navy 575 feet long she displaced nearly 24 000 tonnes. Her main armament consisted of 10 12-inch guns plus many more secondary and specialized weapons. Charles Ford Hammill was attached to Colossus as a Lieutenant. He came from a naval family where both his father and his brother served as Royal Navy officers both in time being promoted to Captain. Born in 1891 he joined the Royal Navy in 1905 as a midshipman. As a midshipman he kept a journal that was full of notes and drawings. After being commissioned he was at some point transferred to HMS Colossus. One of the great naval battles of WWI was the Battle of Jutland. In an attempt to lure out and destroy a portion of the British Grand Fleet the German High Seas Fleet composed of sixteen dreadnoughts six pre-dreadnoughts and supporting ships sortied early on the morning of May 31st 1916. The two fleets numbered 250 ships between them. In the ensuing battle Colossus engaged several German warships receiving very light damage. Fourteen British and eleven German ships sank with great loss of life. Although both sides claimed victory Britain's long-term goal of bottling up the German fleet was successful as they never sortied again. This book measures 6.25 inches by 4 inches and contains 164 pages. It is about 50% complete. The Journal was issued for the use of Junior Officers by the Royal Navy. The covers are a brown/maroon cloth over marbled boards. The pages are faintly lined. The style is flip-top. On offer is a very detailed ledger listing and accounting for a mid-19th century church congregation being the Second Brookfield Seventh-Day Baptist Church and kept by the Reverend Julius Maxson Todd 1819-1901 SEE BIO NOTES AT END OF LISTING. This incredible piece of history covers 13 years of the church’s history while Todd was pastor. The ledger is a detailed listing of member of this religious community for the years 1859 through 1872. It records the names of each congregant and the amount of money they donated to the parish. The importance and value of this ledger is the listing of the families. For a genealogist or anyone interested in the history of upstate New York in the mid 19th century this is a solid reference work that clearly locates individuals in a specific place and time. It also adds to the community history of the wider society in that rural part of New York state and contributes to the existing body of knowledge related to the Seventh Day Baptist religion. The book measures 7.5 inches by 6.0 inches and contains 120 pages. The cover is a hard paper covered with a marbled pattern. The cover is in reasonably good condition. The binding is sewn. It is loose but intact. The spin has lost its cover. The lined pages are in good condition. The handwriting is legible. BIO NOTES: Reverend Elder Julius Maxson Todd 1819-1901 was born in Kingsville Ohio. Todd was a Seventh-Day Baptist minister. He began his clerical career when he was ordained a minister in Milton WI. He was assigned to the church in Berlin WI where he ministered for nine years. Subsequently he moved to Brookfield NY where he ministered for the next 30 years as pastor at the Second Brookfield Seventh-day Baptist church. In 1842 he married Sophronia Baumhauer who died soon after in 1847. During that marriage he lived in Lexington and southern Wisconsin. After his wife’s death Todd then married Emma Langworthy in 1849 and helped organize a church in Dakota Wisconsin while acting as pastor of the Berlin Wisconsin church. In 1858 Todd was called to be pastor of the Second Brookfield New York Seventh Day Baptists where he served for 30 years. He was a well-loved and respected pastor and figure in his community. Todd had one son named Willie who died at age 15 and he fostered two children Lewis and Rose. After his second wife died in 1891 Todd was called to be pastor in Nortonville where he married Mary Elizabeth Clark in 1895. Multi-colored column along right margin titled "Steam Boat Routes" with subcategories "St. Louis to Galena" "Galena to Prairie du Chien" "Shawneetown to New Orleans" "Shawneetown to St. Louis" "Shawneetown to Lafayette" and "St. Louis to Peoria." ‎1898 Rare Letters about the Fate of a Hamilton Ontario Asylum Patient‎

Fascinating pair of vintage Canadian letters written by Robert Christie Inspector of Asylums and Prisons for the province of Ontario regarding the case and fate of David C. Browning a patient in the Hamilton Asylum. The letters are addressed to Messrs Wright & Brown Solicitors of Carlisle England. The first letter is dated May 30 1898. It is a typed carbon copy of a letter that had been sent and presumed lost and thus sent again. It details financial arrangements for the maintenance of Browning. “I received your letter of the 14th January last with enclosures also yours of May 10th last. Upon receipt of the former I transferred the case to the Toronto General Trust Co as my Agents” May 30 1898. The second letter dated September 23 1898 is a follow-up to the first. It confirms the contents of the first letter suggesting the original had gone astray. In it Christie hints at his responsibilities: “I may say that in consequence of the volume of business under my charge as statutory committee of the persons and estates of all lunatics” September 23 1898. Ontario businessman and political figure Robert Christie was born in 1826 and passed away in 1914. As a businessman he was active in the financial and insurance industries. He served as vice-president of the Canadian Mutual Fire Insurance Company and was a director of the Canada West Farmers’ Mutual and Stock Insurance Company. He entered politics and served in the first Ontario Legislature when Canada was established as an independent country. At his death he was the last surviving member of that first legislature. He was named Inspector of Asylums and Prisons when he left politics. On offer is a manuscript letter written and signed on the reverse of a postcard by Dr. George Alder Blumer 1857-1940 Canadian psychiatrist who initially worked under Toronto's C. K. Clarke. Dated Providence Rhode Island 24 March 1935 Dr. Blumer writes to his colleague Clarence R. Farrar Head of the Toronto Psychiatric Hospital. Dr. Farrar was also a colleague of C. K. Clarke. In this note Blumer tells Farrar that he is sending along a photograph he had taken no photo included here. BIO NOTES: Alder Blumer was a Canadian psychiatrist who worked mainly in the United States. He was a prominent psychiatrist who was widely published on the topics of dementia eugenics and other psychiatric topics. Blumer's career in the world of the asylum moved from state-run progressivism in Toronto under C. K. Clarke mid-1880s- 1899 to custodial care of poor patients in a large public asylum in Utica New York 1899-1902 to Butler Hospital in Rhode Island 1902-21 which dealt with a selected population of "curable" affluent patients. His interest in eugenics that is in negative eugenics with its emphasis on the incurable nature of mental disease and defect especially among the poor was at its peak during his Utica years and faded when his patient population altered. ‎1893 Detailed Manuscript Letter from Historian William M. Blackburn President of Pierre University‎

‎South Dakota. Good with no dust jacket. 1893. Non-Book. On offer is an interesting letter written by the internationally-recognized American historian William Maxwell Blackburn 1828-1898. Blackburn served as president of Pierre University from 1885 to 1898. He was an ecclesiastical historian internationally known through his authorship of numerous books and articles. He wrote on various topics of local and national interest such as the philosophy of education geology and South Dakota history. Blackburn published more than 30 books on topics ranging from young adult fiction to religious histories. He also was a founding member of the South Dakota Historical Society. SEE BIO NOTES AFTER LISTING FOR INFO ON THE UNIVERSITY. Blackburn wrote this letter to Prof Hitchcock apparently a friend and confidant. In his letter Blackburn writes for 3-and-a-half pages commenting on many events both local and national in scope. One reference is to labour problems at the Pullman Company that were the dominant railway coach manufacturer in the United States. The following year Pullman would be engaged in a bitter national strike that paralyzed U. S. Rail transport and was a turning point in American labour relations. An excerpt: “. Since the ‘brake up’ at Pullman – an event so common to state institutions especially in new states that I was not overwhelmed with astonishment tho most very sorry that you felt it best to resign…” p1. The letter also references and important event in the state and city history – notably an effort to have the state capital moved from Pierre to Huron. In the end Pierre prevailed: “Just now we are somewhat concerned over a House bill to submit to the People a Change in the Constitution so as to give the Capital to Huron…” p2. He makes passing reference as well to the political divisions in the electorate of the time specifically mentioning the Populist Party which played a large role in 1892 elections as a significant left-wing force in American politics: “The Legislature has few “populists” in it but about 30-40 farmers so-called” p4. He touches on many other topics throughout. For a historian this letter is a direct connection to a widespread significant economic upheaval in America showing how it can touch even small communities far away from the major centres of economic and political power. On a more local level it is a direct link to an aspect of local history in the Sate of South Dakota. ABOUT PIERRE UNIVERSITY: The Presbyterian Church opened Pierre University in 1883 and built a wood-frame building called Pioneer Hall that year. In a bid for the university the city of Pierre South Dakota offered twenty acres of land and $13000 for the construction of the educational institution Religious and educational institutions were looked to as a ‘civilizing’ influence over the ‘rough’ Western town. Pierre University’s focus was on training ministers and teachers and it awarded the first higher education degree in Dakota Territory in May 1887. The depression of the 1890s hit the area hard and the college was merged with Scotland Academy and relocated to Huron in 1898 where it became Huron College. Passing through several private hands and operating under various names the ‘university’ continued until 2005 when it finally closed. The University was never large and in his letter Blackburn notes that they have 33 ‘class’ students and 35-40 ‘specials’ – possibly part-time students. The letter is a two-page double-sided document that measures approximately 10.5 inches by 8.0 inches. It is about 2/3 complete. The paper is in good condition.
