‎The Hill: a Romance of Friendship‎

‎New York: Dodd Mead & Company 1937. The Hill was first published in 1905. One of more than 50 novels written by its author it depicts the friendship between two boys who attend Harrow. Harrow School founded in 1572 is a highly prestigious boys boarding school in London still going strong today. 8vo size green cloth cover with navy blue titles on spine and navy blue titles and decorations on front cover. The cover appears to be an incomplete printing of the design that appeared on other books: Darker colored cloth books of the earlier 1900s dark blue or black had a illustration on the front cover of a hilly skyline with a tall building spire - which depicts the campus of Harrow School. This silhouette is made from the color of the clothbound book. The illustration on top of that is completed by two different colors on ink in green and white. In this book a later edition the cloth binding appears to be a shade of green represented by the color of the ink in the earlier version. You can see the very light embossing of the hillside and spire and you can see the void as the spire rises between the bands of navy blue ink that make up the design on front cover. These navy blue design elements are part of the sky background. Earlier editions would have used white ink to fill the voids between the navy blue ink and the embossed design of the hillside. It appears that there is a significant publishing error the the front cover design where an layer of white ink is missing. If one didn't know the design of earlier editions you might just take the cover for an abstract design. There is an embossed illustration on the spine of books on a shelf which also would have been filled in with green ink on the earlier edition and which is devoid of ink in this copy. The printing error has produced a unique cover. The book has 325 deckle edged pages with a unique toning or foxing that resembles a wood grain pattern please see our photos. This pattern appears throughout the book with varying degrees of darkness. Horace Vachell 1861 - 1955 was a prolific English author publishing novels 22 plays short stories essays and autobiographical works. Much of his writing features an idealized prosperous English way of life. Please see our photograph of the notation from a previous reader of this book - it is her recommendation. The book has a bumped and worn head and heel of spine sunned spine penciled name on fep which is creased at bottom corner note on half title page and some small white spots on front cover. ‎Athens Rhomaides Frères 1890. Collotype a diptych mounted as a panorama measuring together 285 x 98 cm. The grey photo backing board measures 475 x 119 cm. The print is signed in the right lower corner: 'Ar. Rhomaides'. In the left lower corner the title: 'Panorama d'Athènes'. Note: At the left can be seen the building of 'The National Observatory of Athens' in the middle features the Temple of Theseus and at the right first the Old Royal Palace and then the Akropolis. The photograph was made by the Rhomaides Brothers ca. 1890. It provides a clear image of the city's structure at the time. § Interest in travelling to Greece has a long history from the Roman times till today. The oldest existing Daguerrotypes of Greece were made in 1842 by the French artist and historian of Islamic architecture Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey'. J. Hannavy 'Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography' New York 2008 volume 1 p. 618 The English Reverend George Wilson Bridges is among the first to document photographically the city of Athens in 1848 also providing a panoramic view from the Acropolis. The Greek painter Philippos Margaritis opened in 1853 the first professional photographic studio in Athens. The Rhomaides Brothers were the first to systematically portray the architectural physiognomy of modern Athens. 'The Rhomaides Brothers Konstantinos and Aristoteles originally from Bucharest opened a studio in Ioannina and subsequently settled in Patras. In 1875 they undertook the photographing of the excavations at Olympia carried out by the 'German Archaeological Institute'. This collaboration led to their specialising in archaeological photography which is why they were employed almost exclusively by most of the archaeological schools operating in Greece at the time. They established themselves in Athens in 1876 while retaining at the same time their studio at Patras. The Rhomaides brothers also won fame as portrait photographers recording for posterity many prominent people of their time'. Idem ibidem . The Rhomaides Brothers worked also for the famous German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. ‎1944-1945 New Hampshire US Naval Officer’s Letters Home Discussing Army Academics and Comparing German Italian and British Submarines‎

‎Sampson New York New London Conneticut. Very Good with no dust jacket. Non-Book. On offer are a small collection of two fascinating letters written by Stuart D. Wiggin during his service in World War Two WWII in the United States Navy. Stuart D. Wiggin was born in 1927 to parents Albert W. Wiggin Sr. And Agnes R. Wiggin. He grew up in Wakefield Sanbornville New Hampshire with his parents and three siblings. An outstanding collection of 10 of Stuart’s older brother Albert W. Wiggin Jr. ’s letters can be found in a separate listing #0010310. During his time in the U. S. Navy Stuart was part of the U. S. S. Bushnell Submarine Squadron One stationed at the U. S. Submarine Base in New London CT; Camp Shoemaker CA; Fort George G. Meade MD; U. S. S. Blackfin San Francisco; and Fort Devens Ayer MA. The letters on offer here were written seven months apart in December 1944 and July 1945. In them Stuart writes to his grandparents Mr. And Mrs. A. O. Robinson. The first letter was written on December 7 1944. At this time Stuart is an F2 Fireman Second Class and is staying at the US Naval Training Centre in Sampson New York. The letter is not focused on the war rather on his studies his friends and the weather and driving conditions around the center. It is funny that his comment about the quality of his academic instruction is no different then the way a 17-year-old in the 21st century may speak of their own classes: “School is just the same as ever and not very interesting. They put too much stress on the wrong things and don’t seem to care very much about the important things”. Stuart acknowledges that while school is not interesting to him “It is a lot better than a lot of the other service schools and it’s better than being out to sea”. The second letter was written on July 1st 1945 and contains details that will appeal to naval enthusiasts. Stuart is now an F1 Fireman First Class and is stationed in the U. S. Submarine Base in New London Connecticut. It is a Sunday so he hasn’t much to do. Stuart tells his grandparents that he has been exploring and comparing submarines from Germany Italy and Britain. He also hangs out with some British Navy Officers who are in the US on his base. An excerpt from the letter follows: “I went down to the lower base to look over some of the boats. I took a look at the German sub which is quite a boat. I was on an Italian sub a couple of weeks ago that had much better accommodations for the men but the German was the better of the two. We have a couple British subs. Down here now and I went aboard one of them. It was about the dirtiest thing I have ever been on and not much of a boat either…” Historical Note: This German sub Wiggin mentions is in reference to U-858 which surrendered to the United States Navy in May 1945. Taken together these two letters give insight into the experience of a Navy officer during the Second World War who sees action but also gets an education and observes his surroundings. If the name “Stuart Wiggin” sounds familiar it is likely because there is a Stuart Wiggin Collection of letters at the University of New England. These are part of the Bush Legacy Collection established by Pres. George H and Barbara Bush at the university. The Bush Legacy Collection also includes the Randall J. Cushing Collection of World War I and World War II Letters 1914-1963 a collection of approximately 1500 letters among members of 27 families of U. S. Soldiers in those wars. These letters are separate from that collection and to the best of our knowledge the Bush Legacy Collection contains only letters written by Stuart to his parents not to his grandparents. Both letters are written in pen in an easy cursive hand and fill two sides of single sheets of paper. There is normal signs of age present as the letters and envelopes are slightly discoloured but there are no rips or tears to the letters or envelopes. ‎1894 Handwritten Transcribed Manuscript of Tom Taylor's "Plot and Passion" a 19th Century Detective Play‎

‎United States: Transcription of 19th Century Detective Play. Fair with no dust jacket. 1894. Hardcover. On offer is an outstanding example of the type of melodramatic stage productions that were popular in 19th century America. The script is of a transcribed handwritten copy of a manuscript entitled "Plot and Passions" originally authored by the English dramatist critic and editor of Punch Magazine Tom Taylor sometime prior to 1853. On the first page there is a dedication to a "Mrs. Ella Marbles from one Phillip Ray". On the last page there is another notation: "Presented to S. M. Forest Mrs. Ella Marbles The Old Lady of the Columbus Stock Chicago Ill May 17th / '94". Our informal research has not been able to find any additional biographical information about any of these individuals. The play's original author Tom Taylor began his career as a professor of English literature and language at University College London in the 1840s. However he did not remain long in that position leaving to practice law. Upon being called to the Bar he practiced law for about 5 years before joining the British Civil Service where he worked until retirement in 1876. Parallel to this he built a flourishing career as a writer journalist and dramatist. His output was prodigious numbering some 100 plays in addition to countless articles and columns published in mainstream publications such as The Times and Punch. One of his most famous play in America was "Our American Cousin" 1858 which achieved great success in the 19th century. It remains famous as the play that was being performed in the presence of US President Abraham Lincoln when he was assassinated in 1865. The play "Plot and Passion" was first performed at London's Olympic Theatre in 1853. There was some later dispute between Taylor and the writer John Lang as to whether Lang assisted in writing the play. Taylor dismissed those claims out of hand. Lang was the author of a story with a similar plot - "The Secret Police". The play is of a style known then as a 'detective play'. Set in Napoleonic France it tells the story of 'Fouché' the head of the French Secret Service who uses a group of women whom he refers to as his "Cytherean Court" to discover and trap the mysterious author of letters written against Fouché and Napoleon. For a collector of 19th century stage productions this would be an excellent addition to a collection. This volume measures 7.5 inches by 9.5 inches and contains 184 numbered pages. It is 50% complete as the text is written on one only side of each leaf. The book shows the wear and tear of time. Although present the front cover is only loosely attached to the book while the back cover has separated. The binding is sewn and is in good condition. The pages are all intact and secured to the spine and in good condition. ‎1933 Diary of a Young Los Angeles California Women Coming of Age During the Great Depression‎

‎Los Angeles: Earthquake. Good with no dust jacket. 1933. Softcover. On offer is a very personal account of a year in the life of a young woman living in Los Angeles in the midst of the Great Depression. The author of the diary is Mary Lipshultz. Casual research has not turned up any additional biographical date on her. She was living at home with her parents in Los Angeles California. Context suggests that she was in her late teens or very early twenties. In her diary Mary Lipshultz is totally consumed with her relationships with girlfriends and boyfriends. She has apparently graduated from high school. She spends most of her days doing various household tasks. Although her family does not appear to be wealthy they are comfortable and her father has regular work enabling both Mary and her mother to frequently go shopping. She does look for work but is generally unsuccessful: "In the morning I went to look for work alone but had no success" Feb 13; "I went down to Morries' store early to see about a job. He told me he didn't need me." Apr 15. Eventually she found work in Broadway's one of the premier department store chains of the time. Broadway's was later acquired by Federated Department Stores and stores were merged or re-branded as Macy's or Bloomingdales. "Francis and I went to work in the Broadway. I was scared. Worked at Draperies on the 7 th fl." July 17. Lipshultz grew up in the Great Depression. By 1933 it was firmly entrenched in the United States. Franklin Roosevelt became President and though hampered by the Dust Bowl began the process of rebuilding the American economy - a process that would last a decade until the United States entered WWII. She notes a 'bank holiday' which had everyone worried: "Today the Banks declared a legal holiday. Everyone worried" Mar 2. This entry was discussing the Emergency Banking Act one of FDR's first projects in the first 100 days of his presidency in an effort to address banking failures and other economic woes that gripped the country. As noted above Lipshultz was completely focused on personal and family matters in her diary. As one might expect from a girl her age social relationships were paramount: "Morrie Lerner called me and made a date with me for Monday night. Oh! Diary dear please make him like me! " Jan 12; "In the evening Lou came up unexpectedly. He gets sweeter all the time. We two act terrible. I'll have to try and cut it out. On offer is an outstanding collection of three engineering log books of vessels sunk in World War Two WWII. The log books are those of three ships of the Italian merchant navy MN Cellina MN Fella and MN Rialto. In addition to the main or Deck Log maintained by the ship's Master a separate log was maintained by the Chief Engineer for the recording of all vital information about the ship's engines mechanical systems pressures operating temperatures etc. It may also contain technical drawings and specifications. The Chief Engineer had overall responsibility for the Engineering Department and reported directly to the Master or Captain. In 1938 the Italian merchant fleet numbered 1050 vessels grossing 3180000 tons. By comparison the British merchant fleet numbered 9050 ships grossing 20 150000 tons. In 1932 due to the depression and widespread unemployment of Italian ships the major Italian shipping companies were combined into one state-controlled syndicate under the name Società Italia Flotte Reuniti. By 1937 this syndicate had made rapid recovery and repaid the Government bonds which had supported it. It was then changed into a Limited Company under the name Italia Società Anonima di Navigazione. These three ships - Cellina Fella and Rialto were part of this syndicate. The ships plied the world's major shipping routes including the Mediterranean Atlantic and Pacific. In 1940 most Italian ships were requisitioned for military service and by 1945 few were left afloat. Among the losses were these three ships. M. N. CELLINA was built in 1926. She was seized as a prize by Britain at Gibralter in 1940. She was renamed EMPIRE SAILOR and sailed as part of the British Merchant Navy. In 1942 she was torpedoed and sunk off Cape Race Newfoundland with a loss of 22 lives. M. N. FELLA was built in 1926. In 1940 she was interned at Costa Rica. In 1941 to avoid her capture she was burnt by her crew. M. N. RIALTO was built in 1926. In 1941 she was torpedoed and sunk by British aircraft off the coast of Libya. Each of these log books contains detailed descriptions of the engineering aspects of the relevant ship. They are written in Italian. For the most part the pages are typed resulting in excellent readability. In addition to the notes there are engineering drawings of various components blueprints and performance graphs. They also contain photographs of each ship. The CELLINA's log book details her voyage in 1935 from Trieste Italy to Vancouver Canada The FELLA's log book contains a number of newspaper clippings including some full-page articles all of various aspects of the shipping business. Interestingly there are two pages of notes written in English regarding spare equipment These are an excellent reference pieces. Easily translated they give an authoritative picture of the engineering features of each of these ships. A naval historian would find these useful in filling in gaps in knowledge of these ships as their records were mostly lost when the ships themselves were lost. A naval architect or engineer would find these to be and excellent reference work as to how the engineering and mechanical systems were built and maintained in ships at this time. All three log books measure 11 inches x 8.5 inches. They are 148 pages plus inserts and can be considered 50% complete since entries are on one side of each page only. In the afternoon I took my skates and going onto the ice at the foot of Grove Street I put on my skates and skated down as far as the Colts Freight Depot. Finding the wind trying to my eyes I stayed but a short time. There were a great many persons on the ice. Several boys were pushing girls upon sleds. There were some ladies skating. My nephew skated down to Wetherfield Cove near the Prison and back. Wednesday February 16th The paper contained an account of the arrest of Dr. Louis P. Brockett formerly of the firm of Brockett & Hutchinson of this city for forgery to a large amount. Monday March 14th In the morning manservant John refused to do some work which he was told to do and I gave him notice to leave. ‎LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA CA PEDRO. Good. 1912. On offer is a fascinating enigmatic original 1912 Los Angeles California manuscript diary handwritten by Miss Emma Gerz. A secretary we believe who employs shorthand throughout the 95% filled diary which makes for very intriguing reading. While she is rather open in regular cursive one can only imagine some of her perhaps more intimate entries and more cutting comments she is sometimes catty. We also learn she went on picnics the different plays she's in taking lessons a fellow she likes named Billy a man asking her to go to the beach sometime and her telling him off life with her parents and that she plays basketball and goes to the gymnasium regularly for theatrical rehearsals. Talented enough at piano she gives lessons her first love is the stage and she tries out for a number over the year; when she finds out her part she is outraged: 'Went to see Mr. Earnest and he gave me the part of a Negro mammy ah….shorthand….mama is angry about it too.' Miss Gerz in general is not a happy person though for the most part though she is surrounded by friends has dates goes to nice restaurants and sees shows and does get parts in productions. She suffers from headaches feels low and bemoans her luck: 'No one called. Guess our phone has forgotten how to ring.' Eeyore has nothing on Emma Gerz. She has a large circle of friends through clubs and such and there appears to be a big connection with the German community as most of the people she mentions have Germanic last names. She moves about Los Angeles almost daily as she attends 'Masquerade' exercises climbing Figueroa hill gives piano lessons going to the Wallis Dramatic School and much much more. Fascinating look at this intriguing young woman's life in Los Angeles with the back drop of the early motion picture business happening all around her.
