‎1956 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF MANUSCRIPT LETTERS FROM THE WESTERNMOST EDGE OF THE UNITED STATES HANDWRITTEN BY A BRILLIANT YOUNG MAN LEARNING TO PROTECT AMERICA FROM IT'S COLD WAR ENEMIES‎

‎US NAVAL STATION ADAK STATION ALASKA. Good. 1956. On offer is a fascinating original archive of 23 letters over 40 pages handwritten and typed by Parker Emerson Calkin at the US Naval Station at Adak Alaska to his folks back in Atlanta Georgia. Historians and researchers of the time and place will recognize the grouping as unique especially given the remoteness of Adak which is the westernmost municipality in the United States and the southernmost city in Alaska and there are no radio stations within 200 miles and the historically significant times. 1956 was the year of the Hungarian Revolution the start of the Vietnam Wars the Suez War and in the following year the Strategic Air Command would initiate 24 hour 7 day a week vigilance fearing a missile attack from the Soviet Union. One cannot help but remember that the Korean 'Conflict' had just ended 3 years prior and was still an open painful wound on the American psyche. Parker writes he is being trained to be a Top Secret Control Officer and Radio Officer and given the importance of Adak which was developed as a naval air station and played an important role during the Cold War as a submarine surveillance center these letters are particularly well placed historically. We also learn he is studying to become a geologist which eventually becomes his profession. Dr. Calkin wrote several books and articles concerning his geological findings and studies and even has a glacier named after him. See the BIO NOTES at the end of the description. Some of the letters are written on stationary from the Naval station itself. Here are some snippets: 1956 "April 7th Dear Mom and Dad I imagine as I am writing this you are on your way back to Atlanta….I don't remember exactly what I said in my last letter so I'll probably repeat a lot. I am in the Communications Department here on the Naval Station. There is also a Naval Communication Station at the other end of the Island which does a lot of secret work. At the present time we have seven officers in the department but two are leaving next month. At the present I am in training for the job of Radio and Signal Officer. This is a very important billet and is usually held by a senior J.G. I am the only officer left for the job so I will get it if no senior officers come in the next two months. I will be in charge of the message center with three or four transmitters and six teletype machines. I'll prepare all monthly and quarterly reports to be send form the Dept. to the CO and the Com. 17th Naval District in Kodiak. During the year here I'll probably be rotated to the other two billets which are Electronics officers and custodian of Registered Publications and Postal Officers. I would have liked to be Electronic Officer now but the new JG got that job. I will be standing communications watch which involves sending and receiving secret messages after working hours. I have gotten security clearance and am now a member of the crypt board. Most of this work is secret or confidential but I can tell you that I'm learning to type faster and send messages over the teletype machines. Love Parker." "April 21st Dear Mom and Dad I usually can print better than this but I have a cast on my right arm and so I am now left handed. A week or so ago I was climbing a mountain and was only a few feet from the top when a 60kt wind came up also brings snow so I turned to go down. Well to be brief I fell or slid on the ice some 1500 feet to the bottom and then managed to walk some 5 miles through the storm to the first building. I got some bad scrapes and bruises and a chip out of my wrist. The scrapes are fine by now but the doctor says I must keep this thing on my wrist one more week. I've been x-rayed all over by now but I seem to be as whole as ever although a few muscles are still sore….Well I have to write a little woman a note now so bye for now Love Parker." "May 1st Dear Mom and Dad……Perhaps you would interested in knowing a little more about Adak. Although there are less than 2000 persons on the Island now there were 70000 troops here during the war. Shortly after the Japs took Attu and Kiska the US moved in here and built the place into a regular fortress. There are thousands of quarters all over the place and very few are occupied now. There were two big airports built on opposite sides of Adak. One of these was flooded by a stream when not in use. The other field was torn up by the wind. The original inhabitants of Adak were the Aleut a tribe of Indians very similar to the Eskimos in appearance. A very large potion of this civilization died away because of the diseases brought here by the Russians…Special love to you mom Parker." "June 19thDear Mom and Dad….I'll be taking over a couple of new jobs soon. I'll be custodian of requested publications and Top Secret Control Officer plus my regular job as Radio Officer. Actually there isn't much work to either of these jobs….Hope you all are fine as I am Love Parker." "July 24th Dear Mom and Dad Well today is the day that Joan will be coming in. She came up on the MSTS ship and it will be in at 2 P.M. today. This is the slowest morning I've ever had. I have been working for the last five days cleaning up our temporary quarters. We will be up on a hill overlooking the base called NORPAC Hill. We will be there until the permanent quarters are available. The temporary houses are pretty bad on the outside but fairly nice inside. Ours has three bedrooms bath kitchen living room and dining room. The quarters were pretty dirty when I saw them and there was an inch of sand on the floor where the water had carried it under the back door in a storm. I washed and waxed everything so it will be clean for today. We have a pretty good view from the dining room which looks out to sea. On clear days we can see Great Sitkin Island which is an active volcano 27 miles northeast of Adak. Speaking of Great Sitkin did I write that I went over there on one of the tugs with six other fellows. We stayed over there three days and camped there. We climbed up to the crater on the volcano which took us six hours up and three and half down. It was quite a climb since we started at sea level and climbed over pretty rugged terrain to 5000 feet. After all my running I was in great shape and led the party all the way to the top. We got above 1000 ft. There was snow all the way to the top and all of us that went to the top got pretty badly sunburned. The crater was very interesting to me although it was sort of a broken down one. It consisted of a large pile of cinder like material called pumice and scoria which was enveloped in steam and H2S fumes. The snow was melted back from it for about 25 feet and was over 50 feet deep where I could see the edge. Further down on the outside of the crater there were a lot of fumaroles and hot springs and even a bubbling mud pool. The other day I received a U. S. Geological Survey bulletin and a Geologic map of the Island which I haven't had a chance to study yet. Yesterday three Scripps Oceanographic Institute UCLA ships came in to Adak and I got a phone call from one of the fellows aboard who graduated from Tufts in 51. He was a geology major also and had just gotten through with 3 years in the Navy last year. He showed me around the ship and tires to explain all the electronic gear for sounding and taking cores of the ocean floors. Today they are on their way to Pearl Harbor where they'll explore deep sea canyons….I'll be writing again soon Love Parker." "December 6th Dear Mom and Dad……I have to go to a lecture this afternoon on Arctic Survival and it should be pretty interesting. All the men on the Station have to go to the lecture and sleep out one night during the winter. I guess some fellows really dread it but it will be fun for me. Last year two or three officers were sent up to Fairbanks for a week of Survival training and I think I might be able to get in on it….PLEASE DO NOT FEEL SORRY FOR ME I LIKE IT HERE AND SO DOES JOAN. Love Parker." "December 27th Dear Mom and Dad….Joan has been a little upset lately because the doctors here think she is pregnant but they aren't sure. If she is pregnant she is already four months along but I don't think the doctors will know for sure till next month. If she is pregnant she may be leaving Adak in a month or so. They don't allow anyone to travel after the 6th month so she's either got to leave soon or I've got to extend up here until August. The way are personal life together has been going it will probably be better for her to go home now….Love to all Parker." His last letter is dated May 2nd 1957. Only two of the letters have their original covers. All the letters are in great shape. BIO NOTES: Parker was born in 1933 to the parents of Frank G. and Georgia Calkin in the state of New York. He graduated from college and headed to Alaska to the Navy Base in the 1950s. I think he was just studying geology on the side while in the Navy but by the looks of things he became quite the prominent geologist. In fact there is a Glacier named after him called Calkin Glacier. It's just west of Sentinel Peak and was so named by the United States Antarctic Research Program in the early 1960s. He ended up being a professor of Geology at the University of Buffalo and in 1994 was elected chair of the Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology Division of the Geological Society of America. Since 1977 Calkin has made annual expeditions to Alaska and Antarctica. ‎GREAT FALLS MONTANA MT. Very Good. 1938. On offer is an interesting original 1938 manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified man living with his son Bob in Great Falls Montana. While the author is unknown there are many clues that would undoubtedly allow local researchers to learn his identity. His birthday is on January 21st and a casual reading suggests he is a widower or divorced as there are many mentions of his son but never a mother. A woman named Sue sees the boy a fair bit but her role is never detailed. He and son Bob 11 years old on April 2nd spend many of their free times hunting working on cowhides trips to the Falls hunting bullets at the Sand Hills target shooting and more. They are prodigious hunters and spend time dressing their kills and prepping or storing for food. Besides the everyday labours of rural living the writer has a job perhaps with a food or farm co-op as he mentions a call from the Spokane office and being asked to sell all their wheat he also calls on his tenants which we believe refers to tenant farmers. A very dedicated father inside the home too. He reads to Bob nearly daily to help him prepare for book reports goes to the library with him and attends church run father and son banquets. A dry wit runs throughout the diary: he hurts his hand burning brush and reminds himself to not play with fire. He also can descend into poor form mentioning playing Chinese Checkers in a not so kind manner. The diary also details a three week summer trip to the state of Washington staying around the Seattle area. Here are some snippets: 1938 "January 3rd Not too much in the lSue of work this day. Pascal getting ready for a trip to California. He decided to leave tonight. Cleaned a small turkey which had been hanging in the cold room since December 19th when I returned from Valier with 23 of them. It didn't smell too good. Hope it tastes better. Will see tomorrow night. Bob went out to the Christmas tree fire they had a swell one. I played old Sal for awhile. I've chased gums and so to bed." "February 7th There was a little snow not much. Temperature hangs around zero. This walking busSuess is rather hard on the dogs and my left from knee to ankle are sore. Too bad I don't have the ambition to make myself walk about half the time. Shoveled the walk but didn't' do any great job just made a path." "March 27th Almost finished raking the lawn but still a lot of wind today. RMA and I went up on hill where the old well rig used to be and had a swell tumble weed fire in the coulee to the east. We figured out how to get the car up on the high butte to the northeast and drove up there. It was too windy to have much fun rolling rocks." "April 3rd Nice day. Did some work on the yard and built a fence to keep people off the back lawn. We went for a ride in the afternoon. RMA Ray and Margie were quite busy in their meetings of the "Bloody Three" which is a three way organization they have formed. Guess it is from reading Tom Sawyer but suppose it's good for them and don't think they will commit too many murders before they think of something else." "April 10th RaSued some in the morning. We overslept and RMA missed going to Sunday School. Spaded the bed by the side of the house and cleaned the one in front. Went for a ride in the afternoon and passed by the pistol range where we picked up a swell mess of bullets. Two policemen were shooting." "May 26th Pretty warm today 81 degrees. Pascal and Hattie went to Big Fork to bring back MaxSue whose school will be out tomorrow. They expect to get home Saturday night. I went out North to Marm's also saw Fiedler and brought in a load of pastes. In the evening we went out for a little ride to see the ACM tulips; they were real pretty." "June 10th Pascal went to Big Sandy to pick up Fred Bydeley who came that far with Skie. They got back here about five. We went on the picnic to Big Falls to celebrate school being out for the year. It was nice there and we drove on down to Morony Dam and then back home. Came on back down town and visited with Fred tell about 10:30." "July 10th & 11th Went up to Johnson's for dinner a darn good meal but of course we were late. There was a little hail storm there in the afternoon. Left there at 6:30 and went to Glacier Park station where we got a cabin for the night….Up and at em early. Left at 6:20 A.M. and drove to Belton then up by Lake McDonald and over Logan Pass. Got there at 10:15 P.M. Prims arrived in Great Falls today at noon. Letter from Pa 8-14-38." "August 20th & 22nd Mr. Young and I went to Everett and saw Don Currie and the Merrill property. Went to Bellingham and saw the Moody place and the Wattam house. Had dinner at the Bellingham Hotel and met les Walton there. Of course saw Bill Follis. "November 7th A heck of a day all in all. Sue came down in the morning to get her hair fixed and bought a dress. In the afternoon she came back and got gloves and a hat but the dress didn't get delivered. Well we did get off to the Civitan Banquet where we had duck and a swell time. Dr. Larson was good as well as De Schoen and Crouch. All of them were real nice to us. RMA stayed at home with Ray and at Lovitt's. Maybe it was a good experience for him. Pascal got back this evening." "December 24th We didn't do too much today. Sue and Bob came down in the afternoon and Sue went to The Liberty. Bob and I went home and had some lunch then out to the Sand Hills where we shot bottles. Bob missed one and I missed two. We hunted for bullets and then went to the police pistol range. ‎A Chinese Canister Maker‎

‎British Isles: c. 1820. Fine condition. A scarce and charming original early nineteenth century watercolor painting on wove paper. 8.25 x 7.75 inches 209 x 196 mm. The painting has been tipped onto ecru wove album paper of the period as was the custom yet the watercolors remain vibrant and rich. Although the origin of this lovely painting is unknown a refined and experienced hand clearly created this detailed and elegant composition. Seated on a small wooden block a Chinese Canister Maker solders circular sheets of tin with melted lead creating the vessels for tea and other dry goods. On the foreground two iron skillets holding lead are melting over open makeshift flames. Assorted tools of the forger's trade surround the craftsman. The details are fine; both the tones and shading display the painter's astute understanding of composition and perspective. The artist no doubt was an armchair or "parlor" watercolorist likely an aristocratic gentlewoman or man who sought inspiration from the vast array of published volumes complete with engraved plates of the trades and costumes of the then exotic regions of the globe. The trades and costumes of China were well documented by the turn of the nineteenth century thus the inspiration seems apparent. Archivally framed in double Ivory French matting with 1" neo-classical gilt moulding glazed with Conservation Glass. Sized to 17 1/2 inches square. unknown‎

The painting has been tipped onto ecru wove album paper of the period as was the custom yet the watercolors remain vibrant and rich. Although the origin of this lovely painting is unknown a refined and experienced hand clearly created this detailed and elegant composition. Here a young porter shoulders two hanging trays brimming with flowering pots and baskets. The details are fine; both the tones and shading display the painter's astute understanding of composition and perspective. The artist no doubt was an armchair or "parlor" watercolorist likely an aristocratic gentlewoman or man who sought inspiration from the vast array of published volumes complete with engraved plates of the trades and costumes of the then exotic regions of the globe. The trades and costumes of China were well documented by the turn of the nineteenth century thus the inspiration seems apparent. ‎ANNAPOLIS MARYLAND MD USA US NAVAL ACADEMY. Good. 1907. On offer is a super original 1907 manuscript diary handwritten by Annapolis Maryland Naval Academy student H. A. Leaphart who wrote of his studies drills classes and daily life from January through June 6th. Casual research reveals that Midshipman Leaphart died one month later at home in Missouri. As the obituary below makes clear Leaphart's diary is a record of his formidable academic improvement in achieving 13th in his class. Please see the obituary that follows. A native of Brookfield Missouri his father C.H. Leaphart a railroad engineer at times H.A. writes a line often full entries detailing fire and steam drills sword exercise dancing math and the manner of daily life amongst the other plebes and midshipmen. The 2 days to a page 2¾ x 5¾ inch leather diary about 80% full has some marks on covers some discoloration spine cracked at front pages of book but pages are intact. Overall G. OBIT. KANSAS CITY STAR: July 5. Midshipman H. A. Leapheart who died while at his home in Brookfield Mo. was a member of the last year third class at Annapolis and had just taken the examination for promotion into the second class for the coming year. Reports of the June examinations which have just reached the department from Rear Admiral Sands superintendent of the Naval academy show that on the examination Leapheart made a notable record jumping over the heads of a number of his fellow classmen and reaching thirteenth place on the list. On offer is a absolutely super original 18th Century French language stampless letter dated 1796 with postmarks for Lyon et al being a manuscript relic of one of the most active and extraordinary of times for French watchmakers horologists and timekeepers who were in the spotlight during these early days of the French Revolution and onset of the Napoleonic era as the Decimal Calendar and time system was conceived and implemented. The three 3 page letter is signed from cousin 'Plumery' who send his regards to Margaret and her beau Pierre Odet responding a past letter. Postmarked French Revolutionary Year 5 addressed to Odet Horlogerie a Sarragosse Espayne par Via Perpignan Zaragoza in English; a district of Aragon; Spain; by way of the Pyrenees. While untranslated for the most part the letter appears to cover personal and business matters mentioning Paris 79 Prennast du Pagrien and 79 Gervais the watchmaker's district at that time. Ms Boncillion of Paris is also mentioned. The 'Odet' the letter was sent to we believe relates to one of two noted horologists named Odet: Odet Etienne; as stated online: 'Maître horloger genevois. Forme Louis Gabriel Colladon en 1779.' Or Odet Pierre-François: 'Fils de Gabriel. Origianaire de Genthod environs de Genève. Horloger. Reçu habitant de Genève en 1756.' Dora Willie go to school. All go down to Frank Bellis for a variety wedding. Ma finishes her dress and goes to Warsaw to the Missionary meeting. I begin my calico dress. ‎This Russian-born American composer ended up in France after the Russian Revolution where he performed and composed prolifically -- symphonies orchestral pieces piano concertos operas ballet and choral music; post-WW2 he emigrated to Chicago where he taught and composed. Remarkably beautiful ALS 1p 6" X 11" Vanves France n.y. likely early 1930s. Near fine. On a lovely heavy tannish tissue paper Tcherepnine pens in his usual miniscule script and black ink a note to unidentified "Cher ami" in French referring to the first performance of his new work "Suite georgienne" and the Salle de l'ancienne Conservatoire in Paris; he switches to English briefly near the close when noting trying to reach someone by telephone "but was unsuccessfull!" This handsome note occupies only a small central portion at the right margin much of this sheet being filled with an extraordinary partly hand-drawn and partly inkstamped color drawing presumably Japanese depicting a monkey descending the branches of a tree bearing numerous orange flowers against a pale blue background. Wonderfully executed in pale soft colors. At lower right and lower left are small inkstamped insignias that we assume indicate the artist. On offer is a fascinating 1956 index type 4 x 6 inch file card with manuscript notes on both sides detailing the 'Game of the Century' where in 1956 the 13 year old Robert James 'Bobby' Fischer beat Donald Byrne the international chess master at the Rosenwald Memorial Tournament in New York. While it is impossible to know if the unidentified author attended the match one would believe he did so given the notes he has made immediately after many of the moves which appear based on his personal opinion during the match.
