‎MOBILE ALABAMA AL 1843. On offer is an interesting original manuscript relic of North-South trade being an 1843 handwritten letter dated Mobile Alabama as field representative A.C. Mathewson writes his head office of jewellers Mathewson Allen and Co. of Rhode Island. Addresses to the company his correspondent was likely his relation Nathan Fuller Mathewson born: 7 Sep 1814 Warren RI Marriage: Susan Green Wightman about 1840 in Providence RI Died: 27 May 1901 Jeweler and partner from circa 1835 to 1848 with Bradford Allen in Providence RI as MATHEWSON & ALLEN listed in the 1836 city directory with a shop on the corner of Pine and Rhodes Streets regarding the state of his gold and silver trade dealings. He reports he has had almost no business in Mobile but frequently mentions he expects better in New Orleans. He also notes business dealings between Rhode Island New York and Charleston South Carolina too. Some small loss from opening at the seal and a mouse has done some nibbling. Overall G. Braum all addressed to "Miss Lida Terrell Crystal Springs Miss." The first two letters mailed together are dated Sept. 20 1888 and Sept 29 1888 mailed that day. The third of two pages dated Nov. 6 1888 to "My Lovely Lida" and the fourth and final one page letter dated Aug 8 1888 to "My Darling Lida". We note approximately 15 vouchers many with an attached original or onion skin copies explaining the expenditures. We also note a few letters to the Senator advising him that there may be issues with some vouchers and his need to clear up some of the details. His travels took him over much of the South making for a unique perspective through these expenditures into this fascinating man's work and travels. ‎SWOPE, Herbert Bayard (1882-1958)‎

‎Typed Letter Signed‎

‎This colorful and influential editor and journalist -- brother of General Electric president Gerard Swope -- won a Pulitzer prize for his World War One coverage; he edited the New York World from 1920 to 1929. TLS 12pp rectos only 8" X 10¼" Washington DC 1918 January 23. Addressed "To the Council New York World" -- though Swope crosses this out in pencil and adds "Dear RP" publisher Ralph Pulitzer eldest son of Joseph Pulitzer and himself a highly influential journalist. Very good. All 12 pages of this lengthy missive have been neatly tipped together along the left margin the whole of which was affixed into one of Swope's personal scrapbooks since removed. Late in 1916 Swope authored several articles collecting titled "Inside the German Empire" which earned him the 1917 Pulitzer Prize for reporting -- which must have impressed President Woodrow Wilson mightily for only months later Swope writes this detailed report to the editorial board of his employer newspaper of which he would soon become editor. Writing "Confidential" in the upper left corner of the first page he opens with an auspicious "The president asked me to come to see him yesterday. I was with him almost an hour. It was most enlightening." The remainder of the report is a detailed frank and flattering look at Wilson and his conduct of World War One. Swope obviously made a carbon copy of this report one to mail and the other to keep. This is his retained copy although the first two leaves are the originals and leaves three through twelve the carbons. He signs this copy in full and boldly at the close and throughout the text are original non-carbon additions deletions and corrections in ink. Two heavy stock scrapbook margins in which Swope describes the content in thick blue pencil are also present each roughly 10" X 3" and provide interesting background. These read: "This was written after I had been in Washington for several months assigned there to ' the administration out of the water' if I thought things were going badly. The World was a strong Wilson paper which would have given extra force to the attack NY in the Boston / Phila. No one were to use my dispatch if critical" adding in regular pencil "Waddell Catchings of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce had announced that "we had lost the war." A fascinating letter -- whether it saw light of day in any published form is unknown. Also accompanied by a superb unusual glossy 9" X 7" news agency photograph International News Photo a fine image showing a smiling Swope standing with General Eisenhower and two others. Original mimeographed paper label affixed to verso which dates this scene 9 September 1947 titles it "Swope Decorated for War Services" and describes it: "James F. Byrnes former U.S. Secretary of State indulges in a bit of good-natured ribbing after General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower had presented the Medal for Merit to Herbert Bayard Swope right in a ceremony at the War Department. Looking on are Gen. Eisenhower and Bernard M. Baruch second from right. Mr. Swope was honored for 'exceptionally meritorious conduct in performance of outstanding services in World War II.' unknown‎

Gage United States Navy Reserve stationed on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay sent back home to his family in Needham Massachusetts June of 1946. A loving son he writes lengthy letters about 5 pages each which are filled with wonderful descriptions and details of his time and life serving in the Navy: he raves about the San Francisco area and describes life on Treasure Island. He works on a tug takes a trip down the coast on Highway 1 goes to UC Berkeley campus and more. Adding some depth to his writings Frank makes a hand drawn map showing the San Francisco Bay Treasure Island the Golden Gate Bridge with comments about the dense fog and much much more. ‎BALTIMORE MD to NORFOLK VA c/o U.S. SLOOP CYANE 1841. On offer is a super fascinating stampless manuscript letter dated 'Baltimore Wednesday Evening July 14 1841 Dear Brother Thomas' Rousy Midshipman on U.S. Sloop Cyane handwritten by older brother William to his brother who appears to be a newly minted midshipman aboard the noted sloop of war Cyane. Beginning with congratulations the three 3 page and a bit well filled letter written over a couple of days brother William provides wisdom and advice as a good brother would along with admonitions of care regarding 'intercourse'. It is likely that the author William was himself a naval officer or at least a soldier within a command structure as his advice of hard work in attaining the highest levels of seafaring education are classic: 'Most of the Officers have had superior education I presume for they are commonly the sons of wealthy men. However it is only by superior knowledge superior skills and superior courage that men can arrive at great superiority of his fellows.' He goes on hoping Thomas will be interested in rising above mediocrity. Family news is interspersed but mostly the content deals with the ship future travels and Thomas' role. The folded stampless letter has some splits in the folds and some very small loss where the seal opened but overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES online sources: The second USS Cyane was a sloop-of-war in the United States Navy during the Mexican-American War. Cyane was launched 2 December 1837 by Boston Navy Yard. She was commissioned in May 1838 Commander John Percival in command. She sailed 24 June 1838 for duty in the Mediterranean returning to Norfolk Virginia 16 May 1841. She cleared 1 November 1841 for the Pacific Squadron returning 1 October 1844. Sailing again for the Pacific 10 August 1845 Cyane served on the west coast during the Mexican War. On 7 July 1846 her commanding officer Captain William Mervine led a detachment of Marines and sailors from Commodore John D. Sloat's squadron ashore at Monterey California hoisting the American flag at the Customs House and claiming possession of the city and all of present day California. On 26 July 1846 Lieutenant Colonel John C. Frémont's California Battalion boarded Cyane now under the command of Commander Samuel Francis Du Pont and the ship sailed for San Diego California on 29 July 1846. She landed Marines at nearby La Playa where they were warmly welcomed by the largely pro-American civilian population. The Marines took abandoned guns from Fort Guijarros and used them to lay siege to Old Town San Diego. A detachment of Marines and sailors from Cyane took possession of the town raising the American flag. They were followed shortly by the Fremont volunteers and Cyane's detachment returned aboard to sail for San Blas where a landing party destroyed a Mexican battery 2 September. Entering the Gulf of California Cyane seized La Paz and burned the small fleet at Guaymas. Within a month she cleared the Gulf of hostile ships destroying or capturing 30 vessels. In company with Independence and Congress she captured the town of Mazatlán Mexico 11 November 1847. On 22 January 1848 she arrived off San José del Cabo to relieve the besieged garrison there. She landed a force of about 100 men who fought the final engagement and broke the Mexican siege. She returned to Norfolk 9 October 1848 to receive the congratulations of the Secretary of the Navy for her significant contributions to American victory in Mexico. Between 9 October 1851 and 24 June 1852 Cyane sailed in the Home Squadron rejoining it 10 October 1852 to cruise constantly on the Atlantic coast and in the Caribbean from Nova Scotia to Aspinwall for the protection of the lives and property of American citizens. She bombarded and destroyed Greytown Mosquito Coast 13 July 1854 in retaliation for actions against American citizens there. On June 3 1857 the Cyane retrieved from Greytown more than 150 filibusters who surrendered with William Walker at Rivas Nicaragua on May 1 some of whom had their families with them. The ship afterward protected the disputed fisheries along the coast of Nova Scotia from 2 September to 30 October 1857. She sailed for Haiti 19 November 1857 and joined a special expedition surveying the Isthmus of Darien as a possible canal site. Bombardment 1854 In August 1858 Cyane stood out for the Pacific joining the Pacific Squadron. In 1863 during the Civil War the Cyane prevented the sloop J. M. Chapman from being used as a Confederate privateer when their boarding parties took control of the ship as it was preparing to leave San Francisco. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. ‎1915 1917 ORIGINAL PAIR 2 OF MANUSCRIPT DOSAGE LOGS OF PATIENTS TREATED WITH NARCOTICS AND A SIGNIFICANT LOOK AT EARLY 20TH CENTURY DRUG TREATMENTS‎

‎Very Good. 1915. On offer are a super pair 2 of manuscript hospital or asylum patient medicine dosage log books dated 1915 and 1917 only identified by the initials of KM and later KF on the front covers likely nurses whose responsibilities seemed to be solely narcotizing their patients. Heroin Morphine Codeia Sedatives and narcotic interventions are detailed in the 'Night Reports' for dosages given to patients. The data offered in the books makes for a significant look into the treatment of patients a century ago and the difference in the attitudes of treatment between then and now. The difference could not be more startling. There are many patient names listed throughout and one can see some receiving dosages of heroin for months on end and several times a day. Undoubtedly a medical researcher or historian can deduce the rationale for the treatments from the data provided. The books are all entirely handwritten in either blue or red ink. There are many variations of handwriting which leads one to believe that various individuals recorded information on different shift nights. The first book 6 5/8" x 4" has 78 pages all of which have writing except for 3. The second book measures 6" x 3 3/4" and has 30 pages filled. ‎NORTH HEAD GRAND MANAN 1934. On offer is a super original 1934 letter handwritten James S. Quinn from North Head Grand Manan New Brunswick Canada. A two page letter musing on a few subjects; half a dozen whales moving among fishing boats a fisherman ran his boat onto the back of one whale while another man fired a rifle into another as well as mentioning the loss of fishing nets and gear to whales. Most interest Quinn also mentions rumour that alleges that Mr. Rockefeller and Allan Moses were using Rockefeller's island as a liquor supply for the States. Undoubtedly he is referring to John S. Rockefeller who purchased Kent Island and was the grandson of oil magnate William Rockefeller. Horizontal and vertical fold creases present with many small to medium tears along the folds. Single page handwritten on both sides approximately 8 1/2 by 11 inches. On Grand Manan Watch Repair Depot letterhead. Some wrinkling general toning and fading to the piece. Overall G. On offer is a super original 1887 rather naïve three page manuscript letter handwritten by a young itinerant traveler Geary Beam to his brother Wesley letter with an interesting narrative of his travels to the Baltimore area for work with a companion. Here are some snippets: "I am down 9 miles below Baltimore by water and 15 miles below Baltimore by land there is only three houses that you can see around and one of them is the other side of the river." No place to sleep."we went down along the river and we found an old boat laying out on shore.shuved it into the river.old pieces of roten lims off and old tree." Boat came apart almost sunk. ‎1972 ORIGINAL TYPED MANUSCRIPT: LONG WALK RECOLLECTIONS BY NAVAJOS BY NOTED HISTORIAN PLUS HIS EDITORS COPY‎

‎1972. On offer is a fascinating pair 2 of manuscripts dated 1972 one an original of his story LONG WALK: RECOLLECTIONS BY NAVAJOS by Crawford R. 'CR' Buell who atypical of the establishment stories accounts for what happened during the "Indian Wars" not from the Army's or white man's point of view but from the view of the Navajo and Apache Indians. Of the two manuscripts one is Buell's original the other is the original edited copy from his editor Al Schroeder. Both are type written with handwritten corrections and notes. Buell's contains 23 pages and Schroeder's contains 25 pages. HISTORIC NOTES: History of the Long Walk: In the early 1860's the U.S. Army created a plan to move all Mescalero Apaches and Navajos from their land in response to fighting by the Navajo Indians and Americans of European descent who had begun settling in and around the Navajo homelands. This removal became known as The "Long Walk" because the Apache and Navajo Indians were forced at gun point from their homes in northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico and made to walk 300-plus-mile to a desolate internment camp along the Pecos River in eastern New Mexico called the Bosque Redondo Reservation Fort Sumner. The Army's plan began in January 1864 in the dead of winter and lasted for two months. According to historic accounts some 7500 to 8500 men women and children were forced to leave of which approx. 200 Navajos died of starvation and exposure to the elements. The Navajo were kept at the internment camp for 4 years having endured overcrowding and miserable conditions. In 1868 the Navajo signed the historic U.S.-Navajo Treaty which allowed the Navajo to be freed and to return to only a small portion of their original homeland in Arizona and New Mexico. The U.S. government promised basic services in exchange for peace and the Navajo began the long walk home on June 18 1868. ‎Manuscript Account of Travel in Alaska July - August c. 1924‎

‎1924. Manuscript. Good. octavo 51 pages written on letterhead of the Department of the Interior United States Geological Survey rectos only neatly inscribed in pencil and ink very good. This account appears to have been a draft and may have been intended for publication there are numerous corrections changes and emendations throughout the work. The unidentified author traveled by rail from Yellowstone to Seattle and from there to Alaska by steamer. The author visited Ketchikan Seward Anchorage Fairbanks where time was spent with the Mayor Valdez Juneau Prince William Sound Cordova Columbia Glacier etc. The author comments upon the events of the trip and gives interesting information on accommodations for tourists describes the scenery and topography a twelve page description of Columbia Glacier and also describes the towns and cities visited. "Valdez represents the tragedy of mining towns. It is really a dead mining town & it is a real tragedy to walk through and see the great number of vacant houses.
