‎BOLIVIA PERU SOUTH AMERICA. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1899. On offer is a superb pair 2 of original manuscript diaries handwritten by an unidentified American adventurer and gold prospector in Bolivia and Peru circa 1899 - 1901. The diaries inscribed #4 and #5 with the others lost to history tell the incredible story of the author's adventures and encounters with Indigenous Bolivians thieves highwayman soldiers and expatriates. In many ways the times and places nted evoke Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Historians and researchers will be delighted given the long detailed and keen-eyed observations of the author. While this is non-fiction and a personal account it reads like an old-fashioned novel full of intrigue and adventure. For example our author actually pulls his revolver on a group over a mining claim. In another entry he believes he is being followed and writes his location for friends in case he is murdered and his body is found. In another entry he finds an Indigenous man who fell off a treacherous mountain trail into a box canyon and helps in his recovery. Almost every entry mentions his interactions with the Indigenous people of the area and he is often asked to administer help or supply medicine to those he encounters. He also mentions the Federal Revolution of 1899 in Bolivia and battles in the mountains towns etc. There is so much more. In addition to those events he writes about his mining explorations in the Andes on foot with mules and his battle with the elements and fellow miners. There is lots of cheating and double crossing taking place from those he encounters which makes for intense drama. In most cases the author hires Indigenous guides and travels with Anglo companions. They are frequently on the lookout for gold and attempt to make contacts with the local population. Our author had some connection with and worked directly for The Inca Mining Co and Santo Domingo gold mine in Peru. He mentions both several times the diaries also a mill. RESEARCH INFO: "The Santo Domingo mine is located in that zone of the great rivers known in Peru under the name of 'Montana' and situated on the east of the great Andes Cordillera. During the bonanza Mr. W. L. Hardison from California a well-known American engaged in the oil industry happened to pass Santo Domingo on his way to other mines further in the interior and seeing the great output of the mine he made a contract with the owners to buy it. Six months afterward the Inca Mining company a corporation organized under the laws of the state of West Virginia with a capital of $1000000 acquired the property and began workings on a larger scale. Nearly 18 months were devoted to the proper development of the mine and in July 1898 the old mill was completely modified and started continuous running giving good profits and insuring the success of the enterprise." The diaries contain approximately 140 very well-filled pages each. The 1900 diary begins April 7 1900 with a final entry May 14 1901. The 1899 diary begins March 5 1899 with a final entry April 5 1900. Both diaries are bound in hardbound covered boards with red marbled paper and measure 5 x 3 inches. The handwriting is immaculate and easy to decipher. Here are some snippets: "March 5 1899 Borrow twenty four Bolivianos of Recardo. He can give me mule but no Indian. Want to sell him farm to Adams or don't think he would be as accommodating as he is. Also urges me again to employ his daughters husband and he offers me his sisters son of 9 years to cook & do chores for board or an adopted boy. Water reported high on Juliaco- road and likely impassable. Hire Indian to go with me and Bonito to finish drying peaches and prepare garden." "March 7 1899 I can get neither breakfast or mule and in noon before I get started stop with pleasant gentleman in Charzani- He informs me the revolution is not over and Alonzo is still supported by the army showed me good gold ore and offers me half to prospect it for him. Takes no pay." "March 11 1899 Wait long but finally start without breakfast. Bring bread at Jrancame- Pay Indian to let mule feed on her grass. Cross river in boat called balsa- and swim the mule. Road under water and return for guide. Again swim mule much difficulty in reaching Taracos Accommodation with Governor Sugar for two cups of coca. Early start swim two more rivers and hire guide where road is under water. Egbert has not been here. Mr. Carmichel gives me interesting details of the war and present doings of our glorious country." "March 15 1899 Mr. Carmukel arrives from Arizona to take charge of the Santo Domingo Mill. We help him find Mr. Pool ask for the Santo Domingo mine. Attend business. Go to Depot to help Mr. Carmichel get off. Also see an officer and wife off. See Dr. Hunter who advises us to be vaccinated. Pool boys draft with draft on Jose Sanchez. Much interested in information I give him and invite us back tomorrow." "March 191899 Rise early and take train for Juliaca- Gentleman reports battle at Charizami and all killed by the Indians. It startles me but when I learn date I know its a false report for it is since I passed Charizami later on other reports the battle near La Paz. Call on Mr. G. Cannon who expresses interest in out prospecting and wants us to allow him a second chance of good." "March 27 1899 Egbert tried and wants to sleep late. Sanchez brothers start for Puno for school. They especially Philipi very friendly to me. Indian woman sells us burros and I take them from the purchaser. See Governor to get Indian who tries to and called on another price. Calls in a friend and ridicules me because I cant speak good Castillano. I soon lose control of myself and want to fight them both and two Indians that enter but Indians turn tail. Firm all over and the curs want to make amends but I move them aside and walk out." "March 29 1899 Indian steals my old poncho sheep skin and rope from back saddles. Jose warms me to have no business transactions of importance with Frederico Franch. Mule and burro escaped from the corral. Indian started in pursuit but returns with them late for which I compensate him. However it causes a late start. Hire Indian on the road who knows the river crossing. Put clothes on top of cargoes and cross river. Cold as the snow mountains it come from. Find some of our bread was stolen at Cojata. Stop at Indian house and well smoked." "April 9 1899 Many little things to be done today but interruptions result in my accomplishing nothing. Bonito comes with potatoes send medicine to a sick woman hunt the mule Indian comes to sell cheese and guinea pig and wants treatment for what appears to be a light paralytic stroke. Bonito comes again and wants medicine for a burro and so the day passes and all I get done is the washing of my clothes. Bonito tells me a man fell of the bridge just below here and was swept away by the current." "April 16 1899 Egbert sleeps late while I wash clothes Bonito helps get mule across river. Hire him to show me good timber tomorrow Bonito describes trouble between Recardo & Flores most empathically Saze Florio was whipping his wife and would have shot Recardo had the latter shown his heels." "May 1 1899 Blast blown out in crevice and Recardo cries because it did no good. Send Indian for dynamite and pull Recardo back in time to keep stone from hitting him. Go to work without breakfast and by noon can eat two dinners. Blast does little good and Recardo cries again disappears and finally returns and tells me next blast will do better for he went into bush and prayed but the next one also blows out in a crevice. Run a line for him. He wants me to help him sell his finca to Winslow or Glass. Sent mutton down to camp for which I paid well." "June 6 1899 Glass sees one deer. ‎HOLYOKE MASSACHUSETTS NEW YORK CITY NY. Good. 1872. On offer is a super pair 2 of original manuscript diaries handwritten by Sarah Hart Phelps Jewett who was the wife of Civil War veteran author sometimes under the nom de plume Hannah Warner and publisher John Howard Jewett. The first diary was written in 1872 when John and his wife lived in Holyoke and he was the editor of the Holyoke Transcript. Approximately 60% full having 90 blank pages there is still a wealth of narrative in this "page a day" diary and her entries often fill an entire page. Remarkably the second diary is nearly 40 years later from 1911 as identified in her own hand: "Sarah Hart Phelps Jewett Swannanoa Apartments 105 East 15th Street New York City." This second diary is 95% with only 27 blank days and is also a page a day diary. Her handwriting is quite small and the diary is well filled with many fascinating entries. There are lots of trips to Staten Island trips to other areas of New England sailing excursions Times Square activities street cleaners strike leaving a mess in New York murders and all the latest news having to do with the élite of New York City including the marriage of John Jacob Astor and more. Howard is also involved with activities concerning his past life as a Civil War veteran such as conventions and exercises for the veterans. She also says in this 1911 diary that Howard has become deaf and it is very difficult for both him and her. There were other noteworthy entries include her accounts of the awful Triangle Shirt Waist Fire where well over 100 women lost their lives. Historians and collectors of New York City history will be hard pressed to find a more diligent 'reporter' and diarist. Here are some snippets: 1872 "January 15th Howard bought me this new diary this noon and I am very glad of it. I shall try and write about something besides the weather. Howard and pa got their own breakfast and dinner today. I don't think they would care to wait on themselves the year round. Julia came back from Springfield this afternoon. She had a pleasant visit with Em. Everything seems to be all lovely down there now that interesting son-in-law was perfectly serene. Mr. Chase called this evening. He and Howard have gone down on the flat. I don't know but it's just as well to commence this diary today as it would have been January 1st for I've done nothing but grunt and groan since then." "February 7th Howard has some new thing in his head and has bone over to Ranlett's. Mr. Case that horrible man who is in favor of bloomers strong minded women secret marriage &c. has been here this evening. Staid more than an hour. "September 14th Mr. and Mrs. Barker have gone to Lawrence to spend the night. I feel some better then I did yesterday. I was sick and had the doctor. We had quite a Demon-stration this afternoon. The Republicans got together and raised two Grant and Wilson flags one on the hill when Mr. Ewing delivered an address and one in front of the Holyoke House while S. Hopkins and W. B. C. Pearson's spoke. The best part of it was the music furnished by the Springfield Armory Band." 1911 "January 24th This morning Times has a full account of the shooting of Graham Phillips the author yesterday noon by a museum violinist named Goldsborough. As Mr. Phillips was on his way to the Princeton Club he overtook him and fired five or six shots into his body and put the last shot though his own head dying instantly. He was rooming at the Rand School on 19th St. No reason is found. He belonged to a good family in Washington. Was a Harvard student of music also had studied this year in Berlin. Her last entry in this diary as it is so profound: "Sorry to lay aside this diary it's one more record of my life. Just a small slice poorly kept form day to day. Sometimes I think I will never try to keep another but I think I might feel lost without as I have made just a little note of our lives from day to day and in a way depend upon it for reference. As I write this I am holding sleepy Peter Cat in my lap. Some how there seems to be more to him then any cat's we've ever had. He is real and clean also affectionate and is fond of Howard. The covers of this book are the worst ever and I am way more than ashamed." The first diary measures about 3" x 5" and although the cover's front flap is accounted for it has torn off of the binding. The rest of the cover is also very torn but the pages and binding look good. The 1911 diary measures about 3 ½" x 6" and as Sarah was saying the cover is very worn and falling away from the diary itself. In fact the cover has pulled away front and back boards of the diary. The pages and binding look good though. Overall G. BIO NOTES: Mr. Jewett had quite the distinguished career and these diaries have a wealth of historical and significant contents. The following was taken from a book called "The History and Genealogy of the Jewett's of America; Volume 2.": "John Howard Jewett was born in Hadley Mass. January 19th 1843. He married in Northampton Mass. October 1st 1867 Sarah Hart Phelps who was born in Northampton January 31st 1844 daughter of Louis and Emma Hart Phelps. Mr. Jewett graduated from Hopkins Academy in Hadley in 1861. He entered the army April 26th 1861 in Co. C 10th Mass. Vol. Inft. and resigned August 1864 with the rank of Assistant Quartermaster and Ordnance Officer. He became editor and business manager of the Holyoke Mass Transcript and served in that position from 1867 to 1873 and was business manager from 1873-1896. He published the Worcester Gazette from 1896 until 1899 when he sold this paper and has since been at the head of the John H. Jewett Publishing Co. of New York. He has written popular verse over his own name and under the nom de plume of "Hannah Warner." Is the author of "The Bunny Stories" "More Bunny Stories 1900" and also numerous other juvenile tales in St. Nicholas Youth's Companion etc. Songs patriotic verse "Missing None" Civil War "Triflers All" Spanish War and other articles of note." One child Sheila Mackensie born in Worcester Mass. June 9th 1882. Sheila Jewett Bailey attended the Dalzell School in Worcester. On June 15 1905 she married William Bacon Bailey 1873-1952 son of William Leonard Bailey and Ellen Henrietta Bacon; he was a sociologist Yale University economist and later supervisor of the U.S. Census. They had one daughter Dorothy Bailey born October 26 1909. ‎MILSTEAD CONYERS GEORGIA. Very Good. 1970. On offer is a super group of three 3 manuscript diaries handwritten by a young woman from Milstead Georgia named Terri L. Payne. The three books are written btween 1970 and 1975. In them she records three different addresses all in Milstead except for one in Conyers. Terri treats her diaries as an intimate friend relating the mundane to the intensely intimate. Only 12 years old in 1970 her birthday is September 8th and she is in Grade 7 in the 1970 book she records in her diary a minor kidney infection nine cavities and her first menstrual period. She goes to school takes the bus goes to bingo cleans up her house goes to ballgames and basketball games works at a nursing home for a little while and has a very full social and romantic life. In 1972 James a possible family member dies - and she hopes he's saved. She takes bus "48" to school and her grades are not great. She notes on October 20 1971 that "I love my mother more than anything in the world." She expresses romantic interest in Chuck Phil and Buster. In 1974 Terri is thinking of seeing the film "The Way We Were." She also notes on January 19 1974 "…guy named Greene shot and killed Margie Hall and Gut Hall." She notes that Valentines Day "wasn't so great. Mom had been drinking when I got home." Terri mentions her mother quite often and worries about her emotional state. She gets elected to student council. 1975 is a momentous year for Terri and her romantic attachments become more clear and deep. She speaks of Brad often and there is talk of being serious and marriage. She notes on August 8 1975 that when Brad is affectionate toward her when she cooks dinner "it's just lie being married." She sees movie on August 13 1975 "Once Is Not Enough" - a film based on a book by Jacqueline Susann who wrote "The Valley Of The Dolls." Terri is attending college in September 1975 while Brad is working. On December 6 1975 Terri writes about their first time "making love" saying "we've never laughed so hard… he couldn't get it in." The diary entries end on December 28 1975 with her saying that Brad "said he loved me but he had to get rid of his doubts before he married me…this is the first time in 77 days I haven't seen Brad. I love him and miss him so much." She also notes all family members and friends listed in diaries with birthdates. A super job as a diarist even though sporadic. The books proper are approximately 6" x 4 1/2". The 1970 1971 and 1972 diaries have approximately 147 pages of entries. The 1974 diary has approximately 266 pages of entries and the 1975 diary has about 58 pages of entries. It is a 5-year diary but Terri used each page for a whole day. ‎1955 FASCINATING ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A PAIR OF GERMAN TEENAGERS: ONE SUFFERING PRE BERLIN WALL OPPRESSION IN THE SOVIET SECTOR AND HIS LUCKIER FRIEND IN THE AMERICAN SECTOR WHO WERE GIVEN A SUMMER CAMP EXPERIENCE IN ENGLAND‎

‎Germany - England. Good. 1955. On offer is a terrific significant journal written by two German high school students who visited an English camp during the bleak years following WWII. The journal measures 9 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches. It is composed of 88 pages fastened together with a leatherette lace between cardboard covers. The cover has a very lovely ink sketch of London Bridge. It is in very good condition as are all 88 pages. The layout is 'landscape' and each page is typed. The spelling grammar and language construction are excellent. In 1955 Werner Avenhaus and his friend Helmut Matthias are high school students at Ulrich-von-Hutten-Highschool in Berlin Lichtenrade. Avenhaus lives in the Soviet Sector but is able to cross into the American Sector to go to school as the Berlin Wall was still six years in the future. In August 1955 Avenhaus and his friend Helmut are selected to take part in an international summer camp experience in Britain. Life was not easy: "I myself live in the Soviet Zone and I have to pass controls at the frontier every day when I go to school. My father has fallen during the last war and so my mother has to earn our living. So you can imagine that there was not much hope for me to see a foreign country. You can imagine my joy when Helmut Matthias a fellow pupil of mine and myself were chosen for a 15 visit to England. Almost immediately I tried the passports and visas. This was very difficult for me for I had to conceal my plan from the authorities in Eastern Germany which would never have permitted me to visit a country of the western hemisphere." He travelled by himself and met his teacher a few days later in Hannover. Matthias living in the American Zone had no such problems. What follows are pages of excellent description of their journey and experiences. Their initial destination was London where they stayed overnight. The next day was given over to sightseeing: "The first important building we saw was Westminster Abbey the huge cathedral where all the kings and queens of England were crowned since 1066 . A black marble in the floor of the nave marked the last resting place of the Unknown Warrior . Behind the cathedral we saw the Houses of Parliament . And the famous bell called Big Ben . After a while we reached the next interesting building: Buckingham Palace is the London residence of the Queen." Later that day they meet several students from Italy and Australia. They all board buses and drive north to the small town of Cuffley where they move into a wooded fully-equipped campground for two weeks. With Matthias taking over some of the note-taking they describe the camp and those they met there: ". It was an international Course for Senior Pupils from Western European Schools and Englicsh Grammar Schools on Literature and the Arts in Western Europe. It was the first time that senior pupils from schools in Austria France Germany Italy and Spain had joined their contemporaries in England to study each other's language literature and arts." They describe their own group their tent quarters and how their days unfolded. Mornings were given over to lectures and studies in a foreign language discussion and seminars on literature and art followed by afternoons for sports and bus tours of the surrounding area. The journal is simply chock full of details. There was a lot of activity packed into those 15 days. The journal has a number of black-and-white photographs pasted into various pages. Also of interest are two letters. An undated one written by Wolfgang Sutor and addressed simply to 'Dear Friends' expresses thanks for a pair of shoes and a winter coat: ". I was very glad indeed to get a very good winter-coat. I was extremely delighted about it because I did not possess any and it is winter now." The second letter is written by a girl named Waltraud Ernst. Dated January 10 1953 it too is addressed simply to 'Dear Friends.' In it she expresses thanks for a package of red wool she received so her mother could knit her a sweater. She describes her life in the letter noting that she is 20 attends school and works part-time as a cashier. She observes: ". In Germany everybody is glad to have work. It's very difficult to get a place for the young people who have finished school." She tells how her father 65 yrs old a concert musician before the war lost his leg in the fighting. Her mother is 58 and very ill. She makes a very poignant comment . You can see the traces of the last war in her face. She expresses the hope that someday she can become a teacher. At the end of the journal Werner and Helmut express their gratitude for the opportunity to take part in the camp: ". We had also enormous profit by learning other nations' idea wishes and customs to see what it means to help each other on the human basis and to see that we are all part of a great human family that has one foundation . We are sure that this is the best way to make friends in the world." It is signed by both boys. We learned in a 2021 email from Avenhaus that he began studying at the Free University in West Berlin in 1956. He had a room in West Berlin but returned home on weekends to help out in his family’s large fruit and vegetable garden. Avenhause explained that two weeks before the Berlin Wall was erected a neighbour warned him that something would happen to individuals who travelled into West Berlin. His family took immediate action: his 80-year-old grandmother and 46-year-old mother went by train to West Berlin without any belongings and Avenhaus’s 20-year-old sister Erika followed shortly after on a different train. They all met in Werner’s room in West Berlin and then were flown to Hannover and travelled to Dortmund where they had family. Avenhaus became a high school teacher in the town of Bochum teaching English French and Latin. He married his wife Eva in 1963 and had two children Thomas and Sabine.
