Very Rare. No copies at auction in 30 years. Unitarians can trace their roots back to the 16th Century. The belief spread from Poland to what was then Transylvania Romania through England and on to America where it especially thrived in New England. Michael Servetus seems to be considered the founder of the movement. Servetus a Roman Catholic Spanish physician escaped from the inquisition in France and went to Geneva. Here in 1553 he was burned alive after a three-month trial into his anti-Trinitarian beliefs. "Servetus discovered that in the uncorrupted Greek New Testament there was no text to justify the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. He published two books arguing that Christians should bring their views of God and Jesus into conformity with Jewish and Muslim monotheism. Hence the word "Unitarian" -- God as unity or one" - Canadian Unitarian Council Website. These beliefs sometimes known as Sabellianism were to become known as Socianism after Italian born Faustus Socinus. He developed anti-Trinitarian belief into a more organised teaching. At this time he was living in Poland and his followers were sometimes called the Minor Reformed Church. Forced out of Poland again by persecution many merged with the Unitarians in Transylvania and from there the belief spread to England. Thomas Jefferson Benjamin Franklin and John Adams leaders of the American Revolution were all Unitarians. Interestingly this book also contains one of the earliest appearances of the word Holocaust lending to the interesting debate surrounding its etymology. On offer is a super detailed vintage manuscript diary and journal handwritten by a young Morman Missionary named Valentino Jay Tolman of Stockton California. Using a large 8¾ x 7¾ inch 'Missionary Journal' with pre-printed template pages issued from Salt Lake City by an extension of the Mormon Church this book records in intimate detail this earnest young man's desire to serve his Church in outreach his excitement of the endeavour and in striking detail the year of his service as he does an exemplary job keeping this book up as a diary - he does leave a number of the introductory pre-printed form pages empty. From Rome in 1986 he records everything that occurs through December 31st 1986 over some 300 pages. Historians and researchers of the contemporary Missionary experience especially from a 'boot camp' perspective would be hard pressed to find a more expressive enthusiastic young man who is a super diarist. Along with the handwritten book is a modest archive of photographs letters greeting cards and clippings. The scrapbooks and journals were kept by freshman Ernest Walker Brown Jr. of Louisville Kentucky. Book 1: There are over 110 pages with over 200 ephemeral items including 103 photographs and 30 postcards. Along with the photos and post cards are dance cards invitations programs newspaper articles pages filled with hand written diary notes . There is an interesting silk Confederate Rebel Flag in the front and 2 interesting V.M.I. student photos showing them in their Confederate uniforms marching. There is also a large photo of the Phi Delta Theta House with Mr. Walker standing with other members of the house. Book 2: has nearly 255 pages bulging with all manner of photos tipped in letters newsclippings postcards intimately detail this young man and his life. Super period pieces. Nine monthly diaries from April to December 1932 and then one page per day book for 1933. A true slice of Depression era American George works hard selling his cookies to new stores restaurants and such everyday recording his success and failure each day writing of his desire and ambition to succeed. While he parlays his sales into funds to buy more flour and essentials George has good humor and he lives life very fully with a large circle of friends and family. George is a real charmer. Here is a snippet that really gives a hint at life loving George Smith: January 1st 1934: "Heigh de Ho! Here we go! The fourth year of our far reaching Depression. I certainly wasn't depressed when it overtook me. I was dancing with Fuzzy Woodward at Drumlin's. And that's not a bad start in any language." On offer is an outstanding archive of forty-seven 47 letters from the personal files of famed Admiral of the French Navy and Great Astronomer Amédée Ernest Barthélemy Mouchez. The archive dates 1846 through 1891 and is made up of a few letters from his sister a letter to his mother and then the balance from colleagues notables and friends; a number are on stationery of the Republic of France; Sociedad Cientifica "Antonio Alzate" Mexico; Ecole Normale Superieure Laboratoire de Chime; Senat and some French Ministerial Office letterheads. This fascinating archive touches upon many of Mouchez' career highlights as the letters deal with a number of different areas - Mouchez' work in China matters of the Observatory Mexico personal communications of friends and colleagues etc. Mouchez had a spectacular career embarking on a career in the French Navy as an ensign in 1843. This was a period of relative international maritime peace and much of the navy's activities were dedicated to exploration and discovery. Mouchez was initially occupied with hydrographic studies along the coasts of Korea China and South America penetrating 320 km up the Paraguay River and exploring the Abrolhos Islands. He improved the practice of surveying at sea adapting terrestrial instruments for naval use and was especially concerned with the problems of determining longitude. He developed the use of the theodolite and meridian telescope to improve the error in establishing longitude. Attaining the rank of Captain in 1868 he embarked on a series of expeditions to chart the coast of Algeria. At the conclusion of his project in 1873 he was elected to the Bureau des Longitudes and in the following year was sponsored by the Académie des Sciences to observe the transit of Venus from St. Paul Island in the Indian Ocean. On December 9 he made a sequence of superb photographic plates of the event. In 1875 the Académie elected him a member of the astronomy section and in 1878 he was promoted to rear admiral and awarded the role of director of the Paris Observatory. The observatory had fallen into disrepair and disrepute since the chaos of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and the Paris Commune of 1871. Mouchez set about a programme of reconstruction but failed to persuade the government to fund a new observatory outside the centre of Paris. In 1887 he collaborated with Sir David Gill to host an international astronomical conference in Paris. The principal outcome of the conference was a multi-national project to compile and index a photographic atlas of the heavens the Carte du Ciel. The project consumed massive effort over several decades before it was rendered obsolete by modern astronomical methods. He is also credited with founding Mountsouris Observatory and he is the author of six books on astronomy navigation nautical instruction etc. A grand boulevard in Le Havre and a village in Algeria are named for Mouchez. This is a great archive of intersecting and diverse worlds being astronomy France and her Navy Algeria militaria geography cartography and South America. This book is a wonderful combination of two Jews one who brought to France German literary tendencies and the other who brought to the Germans French artistic tendencies. Heinrich Heine has been called 'the first modern intellectual' and became one of the greatest and most respected writers of the 19th century. Leibermann was the Great German artist that led the Berlin secession group and introduced French impressionism to Germany. This fine press book a magnificent combination of typography design and illustration is often lauded as among the most beautiful of Jewish fine press books if not all fine press books. Liebermann demonstrates a refined sensitivity in his artwork that parallels the emotive text. The Rabbi of Bacherach includes a lovely and romantic description of a Passover- the earliest and most expressive of the essence of the festival in modern Jewish literature. The story here recounts that in trans. and referring to the Haggadah " It was an old heirloom with ancient wine stains. It had come down from the days of her grandfather. ‎Very Good. 1750. Full-Leather. On offer is a superb original 18th Century Latin and some Greek manuscript book of over 328 hand-numbered and some unnumbered leaves of handwritten writings being a treasure trove of ancient medical and alchemy lore and history epitomizing the state of post Renaissance sciences the book includes various charts indices remedies tinctures other pharmacological and chemical recipes alchemy observations treatments and astrological notes. Circa 1730 to 1750s as evidenced by the marbelized end papers and separator pages in this premium 6.25 x 5.5 x 2 inch oblong leather bound clasp enclosed book was an esteemed doctor's medical book or more likely a rich monastic hospital or library given there is are remnant of a paste-down label on the edges though the spine portion of the label is gone. There is a small heart encased by filigree stamped in gilt and a gilt frame on the cover. Research suggests this book was written by 2 or maybe 3 different but similar in style and quality hands giving further credence to a monastic effort. There is a stylized graphic border on each page framing the handwriting. Titles capital letters section headings important notes or comments are in red with the balance in period brown ink. The book has approximately 500 pages handwritten as the numbering accounts for each leaf but the writings are many times on the reverse of the leaf too or 2 pages in other words. Shallow interior vertical crack to the rear cover chipping to the tips of the spine some rubbing and general ageing do not detract from this awesome work of ancient medical and alchemy history. ‎1849 - 1850 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A REBEL AND PARTICIPANT IN THE REVOLUTION OF BADEN DETAILING HIS PARTICIPATION ARREST INTERROGATION AND IMPRISONMENT‎

‎Donaueschingen Germany Southhern Germany. Very Good. 1849. On offer is a very unique historically significant 1849 - 1859 manuscript relic of the Revolution of Baden. There are fifty three 53 pages in German handwriting containing the journal entries of an unidentified 'rebel' and citizen of Donaueschingen Germany who was arrested as part of the Rebellion. While the participant is unidentified local historians researchers or collectors of the era may have enough clues to ascertain the writer's full identity. The entries are dated 6th of July 1849 the day before his arrest until the 25th of June 1850 the day the sentence of the Royal Court was handed down. The accused describes graphically where and how his accommodations were by whom and when he was interrogated and for which accusations how he responded and gives such an informative picture of that time and those circumstances from the point of view of someone who at the end of the Revolution of Baden was arrested by the Prussians as a supporter of the revolution. Here are some snippets: 6th July 1849: "Friday night at about 11 pm marched the troops and the guards under the leadership of Siegel Werner Gögg and so on off toward Hüfingen." 7th July 1849: "On Saturday marched against them the Hessians the Prussians the Bavarians the Mecklenburgers the Frankfurters and the Nassauers about 6000 men towards Donaueschingen a small city in the Black Forest region where 3000 men mostly Bavarians were stationed. On this day I got 20 meters of accommodations…" In the evening at 7 o'clock I was by the Brigadier and the Hessian Provost on orders by the Civil Commissioner Refanie supposedly because of favouring the revolt arrested. There follow descriptions about the type and place of his accommodation observations about the high number of men stationed in Donaueschingen speculation that he could only have been arrested because of a denunciation; on the 9th of July he was apprised of the accusations against him; there follow the days of the hearings with exact descriptions of the proceedings: "on the 2nd January 1850 I had my final interrogation…" "Tuesday the 25th June 1850 they revealed the royal court's verdict upon which I on Monday appealed to the upper court registered." With this last sentence the entries end. The first 45 pages are in a 45-page stitched notebook at the approximate size of 15.5 x 10 cm. and a further 8 pages of the same size are loose. ‎PORTAGE CITY SPRING LAKE WISCONSIN WI. Very Good. 1939. On offer is an fascinating diary chronicling in fantastic detail and comprehensiveness the entire life of a Mrs. Carrie Cecilia Cole Frye. The diary was begun in 1908 but it begins all the way back from her birth in 1864. She details her childhood family life parents brothers and sisters notable births deaths marriages her marriage to Robert John Frye the first time she was able to vote for President her family being quarantined for a Smallpox outbreak and so much more all the way up to 1939. This is a tremendously unique document covering a person’s entire life in unprecedented detail. From reading this diary it is easy to see that Mrs. Cole had an exceptional and truly fulfilled life. Born on February 18 1864 in Portage City Wisconsin to a family with ten other children she writes about moving around the state often. A child of strict parents she began working at 10 years old for her room board and education. In 1882 she met Robert John Fry a 34-year-old Civil War veteran whom she would later marry on July 2 1884. She and Robert Fry had five children one passed away in her infancy and homesteaded on a 40-acre ranch just north of Lakewood Wisconsin. She talks about numerous positions she held as housekeeper caregiver and cook always returning however to the homestead in the spring and summer. In 1909 Robert Fry became quite ill and moved into the Wisconsin Veteran's home. Shortly after her husband moved in Mrs. Cole followed first rooming in Marston Hall. At this point she became the primary bread winner for the family and began working as a telephone operator for the Veteran's home making $15.00 per month. She quickly ascended the ranks and earned the title of Chief Telephone Operator along with a pay increase to $25.00 per month. On March 11 1914 her husband and true love Robert John Fry passed away from "prolonged paralysis of the limbs and a heart seizure." She ended up selling the family farm netting $800.00 and on September 1 1914 left her post as Chief Telephone Operator and began working for the post office as Assistant Postmistress for $20.00 per hour. Again she ascended through the ranks through sheer hard work and determination ultimately achieving position as the Head Postmistress. Interestingly she also tells of the first time she was able to vote in the first election after Women's Suffrage the 19th Amendment had been passed into law. She notes on September 22 1923 that she received a telegram from Washington D.C. saying that she will be receiving pension pay as soon as she submits the appropriate paperwork as the President had signed the Omnibus Bill into law. She sees the beginning of World War I with one of her sons volunteering to serve. She celebrates his safe return and the first Armistice Day Celebration on November 11 1921. She also sees the Great Depression and the start of World War II. By the last few years of the book she is a fairly old woman and her diary notes mostly weather visits from friends and family births and deaths. A life this fully detailed and chronicled is so very rarely found to be read and appreciated. This is an exceptionally interesting document of a life lived through so much love happiness tragedy and war spanning 74 years of life. Though the text ends in 1939 Carrie C. Frye would live a few more year until 1946. The diary is 98 pages long and each page is almost completely filled with writing sometimes from the very top to the very bottom. On only two pages is there an instance of the whole page not being devoted to writing. On these two pages Carrie has pasted cloth on the page that reads “To The One I Love” and writes around it. The book is in very good condition. The front and back cover and spine are in good shape. It is a half-leather binding. The pages within are in good condition as well exhibiting very little wear rips tears or discoloration. For the most part the journal is easy to read with Carrie’s script in black ink. Beginning in 1929 around page 80 the days between entries begin to shrink and the handwriting gets smaller and more cramped making comprehension of the content more difficult. From 1933 on especially the handwriting is small cramped and can be somewhat difficult to decipher at points. The black and blue ink used throughout the book shows only minimal signs of fading and is almost entirely confined to the first few pages. He was hurt in his side but not serious and was out of the hospital Dec 4 and to his sister's home and went home to Heppner Dec 5; The R.R. ‎1945 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG SOLDIER ENDURING GRUELING BASIC TRAINING TO BECOME PART OF THE NAVAL CONSTRUCTION FORCE OF THE U.S. NAVY THE WORLD FAMOUS 'SEABEES'‎

‎DAVISVILLE NAVAL CONSTRUCTION CENTER RHODE ISLAND. Very Good. 1945. On offer is a unique document of a critical part of the United States war effort in the second World War. It is a original handwritten diary by a soldier J.W. Ridgeway going through Basic Training with the United States Naval Construction Battalions better known as the ‘Seabees.’ Beginning with his arrival on February 19th 1945 the diary is a detailed and comprehensive account of the process by which young men were shaped and molded into Seabees capable of being both skilled construction workers building naval bases and trained soldiers who could take up a weapon at a moment’s notice. The Basic Training occurs at the Davisville Naval Construction Battalion Center in Davisville Rhode Island and goes from February 19th to March 21th 1945 right before the author’s embarkation overseas which Ridgeway believes will be China. Almost every single day in the month-long training has a detailed and interesting diary entry written by Ridgeway. For the most part the entries consist of an account of activities done during the day and at what time however he does supplement this training log with personal anecdotes of his feelings and of stories told to him by other soldiers such as a lecture by a fellow Seabee who had been aboard a torpedoed ship that sank and who spent 4 days in the water before being found. The diary is 56 pages long and each page has every single line filled with writing by Ridgeway. Names in the diary include: Lonny Amicucci Lester Mut Connie Rhoades L. Yager and others. The diary measures 6-3/4 x 8-3/8 and is in very good condition. The front and back cover are made of somewhat flimsy board and the company that manufactured the notebook is”Juniata Composition”. The front cover also contains the author’s name the “School” which Ridgeway writes as “CMIC - Co. 6B-1” as well as his “Class” which is “Davisville R.I.” The pages are still in good condition showing only minimal signs of discoloration and wear. No rips or tears are present. The diary contains 5 loose pieces of paper at the end a continuation of the entry that takes up the last page of the book. These pages are a bit flimsier than the ones bound to the book but they are still in very good condition. Ridgeway wrote the whole diary in pencil which is very easy to read and legible throughout. Some slight fading can be found but nothing that affects the legibility of the words written. OVERALL: VG. Text: “Feb. 19 1945. Dod Dodderidge took me over to the bus station at 6:33 A.M. Reported to Federal Bldg. at 10:00A.M. Left on train for Davisville R.I. at 4:55 P.M. Went thru Columbus Pittsburgh Philadelphia New York and Providence. Arrived At Camp Endicott 7:30 P.M.”; “Feb. 21. Reveille at 0600. Shaved etc. Chow at 0655. At 0800 received our work clothes GI issue. They are called greens. Returned to barracks and dressed in our greens.They are really warm. Rhode Island is much colder than Indiana.Chow is excellent and there is plenty of it. We are stationed at barracks D-6 and in our platoon we have 30 men from Texas Oklahoma Louisiana Missouri Arkansas and Indiana. They are all tops and I believe that by the end of the boot we will have one of the best outfits in recruit training. I have been appointed company clerk and mail clerk which means a lot of extra work. However I am excused from all work details and fire watches. Our trip to ships service once a day and mail deliveries at 1115 and 1615 are the high points of the day. There are lots of cigars at Ships Service and we are allowed 2 packs of cigarettes each day.We took our physical examination and all 30 boys in the platoon made the grade. We are company B-6 and have a swell fellow of about 35 the name of Lonny Amicucci for our Chief. He spent 2 yrs in the S. Pacific and really knows the ropes.”; “Feb. 28 - Reveille at 0600. Clean up the barracks. Chow at 0655. At 0800 we went for 2 hours of Judo. Now those stomach muscles hurt. At 1000 we had an hour of Close Order Drill. Mail at 1115 and altho I didn't’ receive any there was quite a pile of it.It’s beginning to get heavy. I have not had much time to write anybody except Betsy and Mom so I can’t expect much mail. It sure is a shot in the arm and there is nothing her in camp they can give you to replace news from home. Chow at 1155. Close Order Drill from 1300 to 1500. We had a lecture on Military Courtesy at 1500. Mail at 1615.Chow at 1755. I wrote a letter to Betsy in the evening. Laps at 2130.”; “March 13.at 1500 we went to the Chemical Warfare Hut and went thru Gas Mask Drill. After the Drill we went thru a Tear Gas Chamber. I couldn’t get a mask to fit me but went into the chamber anyway to find out what would happen. I found out damn quick about 10 seconds to be exact. I really tore out of there and by the time I got my gas mask off I was crying like a baby. My eyes burned but after about 15 minutes I was OK again. When they issue us new gas mask I’m going to be damn sure mine fits. If this had been a real gas attack i would certainly been a dead duck and that isn’t much of a joke.”; “March 21.Reveille at 0600. Today we are secured until 1300. The time will be spent continuing our process of packing etc. Chiow at 0635. The morning was spent packing. L. Yager and myself went down to S-29 Ships Service and made a few minor purchases. Chow at 1135. At 1300 we went to E-5C Drill Hall for our last Drill Period.” United States Naval Construction Battalions better known as the Seabees from the Naval Construction Force of the United States Navy. Their nickname is a heterograph of the first initials "C.B." from the words Construction Battalion. Naval Construction Battalions were conceived of as a replacement for civilian construction companies working for the US Navy after the United States was drawn into World War II with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor On 7 December 1941. International law made it illegal for civilians to resist enemy attack doing so would classify them as guerrillas for which they could be summarily executed. The Seabees would consist of skilled workers that would be trained to drop their tools if necessary and take up their weapons at a moment's notice to defend themselves. The concept model: A USMC–trained Battalion of construction tradesmen a military equivalent of those civilian Companies that would be capable of any type of construction anywhere needed under any conditions or circumstance. It was quickly realized that this model could be utilized in every theater of operations as it was seen to be flexible and adaptable. The use of USMC organization allowed for smooth coordination integration or interface of both the NCF and Marine Corps elements. In addition Seabee Battalions could be deployed individually or in multiples as the project scope and scale dictated. They were unique at conception and remain so today. ‎TOWANDA PENNSYLVANIA. Very Good. 1865. On offer is an original manuscript Civil War Era diary dated 1865 handwritten by George E. Cowell who lived near Towanda Pennsylvania. About 22 years old at the writing George had been a soldier in Co C 141st Infantry Pennsylvania. It appears that he had been discharged from the army when he wrote the diary making note of receiving a pension. He often noted meeting with his brethren. He made mention of the war and Lincoln's death several times. He was very sick with the measles when Lincoln was assassinated. Here are some snippets: April 4 It cleared up. At work for Mr Bradford with his son. Was siding and putting on roof boards. Tired at night. Got the news that Richmond was taken. April 10 Past a restless night. Went out hunting with Dr and Charly. Killed 2 duck and meadow larks. Was worse went to bed. They were celebrating the victory all over in hearing by firing. April 15 In the morning early my measles went back. Ch was scart. He had hardwork to get them out again but I survived after being very sick & the room got warm. April 16 G. Worth came over. I was up about half the time. Went out to the barn felt smart only my eyes were weak. Feeling very sad over Linkolns sic death. April 17 Eyes still weak. About home and went down to Mr Collins at night with Ch. It rained coming home. Eyes grew worse. Found bretheran belonging to the ____ here the author drew a symbol which resembles 2 sets of crossed lines with a C O in the middle. April 19Found my eyes better. Went in to see Mrs Edwards. Took dinner with her. Had a good time. A Linkoln funeral was preached. I went to hear Rev Mr Sherman deliver a discourse on the death of Linkoln. Jan 18 Went to Bishops & someone stole our boat & took it across the river. Came home again and went to Meadsville after Phil and went to the lodge. Ella got her knee hurt. Feb 11 About the bench. Phil and I bought father out for 410.00. Bradley drew up the papers. Mar 16 Sold my place to John Evans. Got 305.00. Sold cow and calf to Phil for 45.00. Went down to Kilmers at night to a party. Mar 17 About home. River very high and still rising. Phil Ella Tim and I went down to Smith's to see it. Mar 19 Pleasant. Went up on the hills. Went to prayer meeting at night. Phil and family went up to Towanda to Leila Means funeral. E J C broke in the home and got some of her things and took money out of Phils pocket book." It is around this time that Mr Cowell took a trip to Minooka with Charly. He stopped at several cities along the way and wrote daily about the trip. He described Oil City Pa as a "stink hole" and sometimes complained about the rate for an overnight room. It appears that the author had relatives in Minooka. He stayed until May working while he was there. "On the trip Ch came down with the measles. Mar 30 Rode around with ER to see the country. Wrote to HSH and Phil. CH broke out nicely with the measles. He got up and fainted dead away. Went to a lecture at night. Went there with a widow. May 13 Cold and windy. Worked 3/4 of the day with the corn sheller. Received 1.50 recompense. 4 Bretheran of us met in the Hotel at night. Sherman Darlan Beal and I. Oct 16 Made Ella a cabbage cutter. Went to Towanda. Bot saw and oil can. Got my pension money 21.25. Dr Turner cut me down to 1/2 pension. Came to JR Cowell at night." The diary has an entry for every day although in the summer months it was often just a couple lines about the farm work he did that day. He did write of his social life which seemed to involve the ladies. The name "Mary Lewis" appears more than once. In the memorandum section are some lines written by friends. The author also kept an accounting record in the cash account section. Included with the diary are two small envelopes from the Office of G.E. Cowell MD of Elwood Il which were for holding prescription powders. These must have belonged to a relative that he visited in Illinois. Also in the diary is a handwritten paper listing "Names of Battles and Horses". The diary is written in pencil and some pages are light but legible. The handwriting takes some getting used to and he wasn't the best speller but I was able to read it without much difficulty. On offer is a super original leather-bound handwritten daily Diary/Account book of an unidentified freight handling company out of Boston who loaded ships many bound for California and the Gold Rush on the various wharves from Boston to Charlestown from Feb-April of 1849. It is handwritten in black ink and contains daily entries of goods & supplies from various Boston businesses to the myriad of ships taking on supplies on the huge array of wharves in Boston. The diary begins in early February in East Boston but by Feb. 15 the log details barrels of this and that going to as many as three ships a day each time logging in this book both the names of the Brig/Schooner/Steamer or Ship and the exact Wharf in Boston that they were moored. This book will be of particular to researchers of the California Gold Rush. Many of these Gold Rush ships were are detailed among Commercial Wharf Long Wharf Foster's Wharf Battery Wharf India Wharf Charlestown and at least 15 other wharves mentioned in this book. There are a many whalers who made port in this list too- like the Ship Coral which was taking on supplies here in March of 1849. ‎1938 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN IOWA WOMAN MOVED TO LOS ANGELES DOING WHAT IT TAKES TO SUPPORT HER FAMILY IN DEPRESSION ERA SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA‎

‎LOS ANGELES 1938. On offer is the original handwritten five year diary of Agnes Gunirlle a housewife and waitress originally from the small town of Mondamin Iowa but living in Los Angeles California for the duration of the diary. She and her husband "Winston" who she refers to most often just as "Mr" live in the Los Feliz neighborhood of the city that they move into during the beginning of August 1938. Ms. Gunirlle's job as a waitress is often mentioned mostly as she talks about the tips she made. "Aug 13 1938. Sat. Went to look at a job worked from 4-12 at night. Home on bus made 30 in tips. on 6619 Western." There are also occasional references to going out dancing or shopping with friends as well as going to the California beach or to Redondo and other seaside towns for events and daytrips. Agnes Gunirrle is young but past school age as much of her life revolves around going to work and church as well as female activities such as knitting pressing clothes and doing household chores. She goes several days a week to church in addition to every Sunday. Most dates contain four entries for the years 1938-1941 though some entries from earlier years run longer and near the end of the year the entries for 1941 stop completely for months at a time. The entries are almost entirely in pencil. On many pages the pencil marks have smudged over the years and can make reading some dates difficult. Here are some snippets: October 2 1938 Sun. Stayed home and went to the show in the evening. To church at 9 bells. Jan 7 1939 Sat. Work at 900 bells. Worked till 8:00 at night. Home and played Chinese checkers. August 1 1939 Mon. Started down the hill at 8 bells & then to L.A. at 1:30 & home. slept all afternoon & evening. Mr. O'Streh got mark mad. September 22 1939 Thu. got my hair died then went to look for work in Hollywood on Vernon. Got a job for fri. & sat. Home & knitted & pressed clothes to bed at 10 bells. October 8 1940 Sun. Sensational archive of six 6 diaries 1908 - 1913 in a Line A Day 5 year notebook style diary then 1914 1915 1919 1920 1923 detailing over 15 years in the the life of James Robert White; a teacher of music and choral tradition at both Columbia University and City College of New York CCNY a student taking some courses and attending lectures at Columbia and a very sociable 'man about town' who goes out nearly everyday and sometimes multiple times turing the day to catch a concert here or a show there. He is very erudite very insightful and compulsive in many of these writings. Of particular note: in the 5 year diary his entries are copious and he sometimes writes upside down to maximize the space and keep daily writings on the same page. The five year also offers up a mystery the author never answers - the diary starting in 1908 is faithfully written throughout but for some reason there is not a single word written of 1912 and no clue or hint why White would write madly hardly ever missing a day for 4 years right up until December 31st 1911 and then not another word until January 1st 1913. Otherwise White records every person he meets has lunch or dinner with a one word or line critique on the hundreds of shows he sees and concerts he attends not to mention all manner of comments on his myriad of meetings for school and social life. He has two children - boys - but never a mention of a Mrs. and it is hard to get a handle on which if any of his frequent dates are more special than the others. He does go out alot with the wives of his associates usually to artistic functions. Here are some snippets: "Am delighted to exchange alnight with Miss H. whom I consider one of my most intelligent friends. She is almost masculinely masterful in what she does." "Expected a call from Mr. Faye but he did not come. He is like many musicians unreliable and not much for working with." "Feeling fairly well used up. Did not sleep well last night. My social pleasures must be curtailed and help me in work." I could go on and on. A more detailed reading of this many hundreds of pages within this archive will I am sure reveal much more about this fascinating educated social man. The 5 year is 8vo. 1914 is 48mo and the rest in between. The 5 year is fragile with regard to the cover but interior is very fine. ‎NEW YORK NY. Very Good. 1907. On offer is a large archive of handwritten letters by Fay Ingalls 1882-1957 noted outdoorsman. He was the son of Melville Ezra Ingalls the railroad magnate. Fay was a Wall Street lawyer who moved to business. At Pratt & Whitney he played an important part in the munitions industry during World War I. He lacked the hard sell of his father and found the greed & corruption of lower Manhattan distasteful & depressing. In 1922 he took over the presidency of VHS Co. moving to Virginia. There he built the Cascades Golf Course at his home called "Homestead." During WW II the Japanese diplomats were lodged in The Homestead where their activities were monitored by the state department and FBI. After the war their hotel prospered. He was also a noted outdoorsman. Offered here are 45 letters from Fay to his wife Rachel 1885-1966 noted horsewoman. These run 1909-1919 mostly 4 pages each. The letters are long newsy intimate letters to his wife and some of his children. Some news of business when it interferes with vacations of communication. All appear to have envelopes. While the author is unidentified there are many clues in the references to properties he owned sold and to whom and what prices and the manner of commerce and trade he was involved in. Entries are sporadic but they give a historical picture of New York economy given that this merchant was quite prosperous given the size of his transactions and his own evaluations on his trade of the day. Our writer was also sufficiently prominent to attend the funeral of boxer and major gang member of the notorious Bowery Boys made famous in the film 'Gangs of New York' who played by Daniel Day-Lewis. Here are some snippets: "I have been to Church…this afternoon the great show was the funeral of Poole. Broadway was crowded from Grace Church to Battery. I never saw so many on Broadway before."He is referring to the William Poole a known gangster called 'Bill the Butcher'. "The authorities are on the alert to catch Lew Baker the murderer of Poole….a part say he has set sail for Palmas." On offer is a super manuscript relic of an early 20th Century trip to the Central American country of Panama written by author lecturer and professional world traveler William A. Brooks of Wellesley Hills Massachusetts. This travel journal is typed likely from handwritten notes and likely prepared for publication though we cannot find any such publications. Brooks was a noted speaker and casual research finds numerous mentions of his holding lectures about his various trips from the early 1900s through the 1920s. He has a wonderful narrative style moving from sophisticated enthusiast to folksy world wise traveller. This manuscript is titled: "Discovering Panama by the Caminos Macionales." ‎Very Good. 1989. Manuscript. COUNTRY MUSIC icon Clarence Eugene Snow May 9 1914 - December 20 1999 better known as Hank Snow was a Hall of Fame country music singer and songwriter. Snow was born in Brooklyn Nova Scotia Canada. When he was 14 he ordered his first guitar from Eaton's catalog for $5.95 and played his first show in a church basement in Bridgewater Nova Scotia at the age of 16. He then traveled to the nearest big city Halifax where he sang in local clubs and bars. A successful appearance on a local radio station led to him being given a chance to audition for RCA Records in Montreal Quebec. In 1936 he signed with RCA Records staying with them for more than forty-five years. A weekly Canadian Broadcasting Corporation CBC radio show brought him national recognition and he began touring Canada until the late 1940s when American country music stations began playing his records. He headed to the "Country Music Capital of the World" Nashville Tennessee and Hank Snow the "Singing Ranger" would be invited to play at the Grand Ole Opry in 1950. That same year he released his mega-hit "I'm Movin' On." The first of seven Number 1 hits on the country charts "I'm Movin' On" stayed at Number 1 for nearly half a year. A regular at the Grand Ole Opry in 1954 Hank Snow persuaded the directors to allow a new singer by the name of Elvis Presley to appear on stage. He used Elvis as his opening act before introducing him to Colonel Tom Parker . In August of 1955 Snow and Parker formed the management team "Hank Snow Attractions." This partnership signed a management contract with Presley but before long Snow was out and Parker had full control over the rock singer's career. In 1958 he became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Performing in lavish and colorful sequin-studded suits his career covered six decades during which he sold more than 80 million albums. Although he became a proud American citizen he still maintained his friendships in Canada and remembered his roots with the 1968 Album "My Nova Scotia Home." In Robert Altman's 1975 film Nashville Henry Gibson played a self-obsessed country star loosely based on Hank Snow. Despite his lack of schooling he was a gifted songwriter and in 1978 was elected to Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. In Canada ten times he was voted that country's top country music performer. In 1979 Hank Snow was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Nova Scotia Music Hall of Fame. TLS 1989 1p.
