‎Autograph Musical Quotation Signed‎

‎Together with Ray Evans this formidable and prolific songwriting duo composed numerous iconic film tunes. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled at Beverly Hills California on 28 February 1973 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Fine. Single 8-cent "George Gershwin" stamp at upper right. No decorative cachet at left; no recipient's name/address. Along the top edge in bold blue ballpoint Livingston inscribes and signs: "My very best to Paul Johnston / Jay Livingston." Below this scattered among the remaining blank area Livingston pens SIX musical measures from six of his best-known tunes neatly penning the title beneath each: "Buttons and Bows" "Que Sera Sera" "To Each His Own" "Silver Bells" "Mona Lisa" and "Tammy." A veritable musical quotation autobiography -- "Buttons and Bows" was composed for "The Paleface" in 1948 "Que Sera Sera" for "The Man Who Knew Too Much" in 1956 "To Each His Own" for "To Each His Own" in 1946 "Silver Bells" for "The Lemon Drop Kid" in 1951 "Mona Lisa" for "Captain Carey" in 1950 and "Tammy" for "Tammy and the Bachelor" in 1957. One occasionally sees Christmas-theme First Day Covers inscribed with a bar or two from "Silver Bells" -- but a music theme cover such as this inscribed with music from six -- count 'em SIX! -- of their most famous songs is rather unusual and most desireable. On Department of the Army letterhead Wedemeyer graciously transmits a signed photograph not present. Comes with a fine 8" X 10" glossy news agency photograph of 1947 showing Wedemeyer in civvies entering the White House "to report to President Truman on his recent mission in the Far East" -- itself a scarce image. ‎This Rhode Islander came from a line of military officers -- including his brother John Jay 1815-95 noted naval officer. ALS 2pp recto and verso 7" X 8" New London CT 1858 December 3. Addressed to "Doct. Duffield" D. Bethune Duffield 1821-91 well known scholar and poet. Good plus. Binding traces along left margin; chip at lower left corner not affecting text; some fold separations archivally mended on verso side. Overall clean quite legible and not unattractive despite condition. On September 10 1858 the 45th anniversary of the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie fought largely by Rhode Islanders on the American side was commemorated with many celebrations taking place in Detroit. Here Almy writes to one of the participants in these ceremonies: "We had the great pleasure in September last of reading in the New York Times many extracts from your very grand & elegant Poem delivered in that month on the ever memorable anniversary of Perry's gallant achievement on Lake Erie." Almy asks for a copy of Duffield's poem noting "We do want it exceedingly. I am myself a real genuine Rhode Islander -- proud of my State & of the glorious men who have given it its reputation. I have in my parlor a very fine likeness of the Hero of Erie and besides recollect his personal appearance well. I saw him receive the welcome of our native town Newport on his return from Erie. And now Sir will you do us the favor to furnish us with your whole Poem. If it is published in pamphlet form we hope you will pardon us for asking for 2 copies as we want one for my Brother who is a Lt. in the Navy & who was delighted with what he read of your brilliant effort." Interestingly the sailing master of the brig "Somers" one of Perry's fleet was a Rhode Islander named Thomas C. Almy -- likely a relative of William E. An intriguing piece. unknown‎

‎Old 98" a two-time All-America halfback and Heisman Trophy winner at University of Michigan 1938-40; with the Los Angeles Rams 1946-47; elected to the College Football Hall of Fame; father of actor Mark Harmon. TNS "Tom" 1p 7¼" X 10½" Los Angeles CA 1962 March 16. Addressed to "Don" Woolf of California Artists. Near fine. On letterhead of CBS affiliate KNX. "Elyse asked that I send you a couple of signatures" Harmon writes. "I hope that the enclosed will be o.k." Bold signature first name only in dark red. Harmon's wife the actress Elyse Knox 1917-2012 was providing original artwork for this greeting card company that published a line of Christmas cards featuring art by Hollywood stars. The "couple of signatures" mentioned is present in the form of an 8½" X 3" slip from which a portion has been neatly snipped off at upper left the Knox signature actually used on the greeting card leaving her large blue ballpoint signature beneath. Accompanied by a fine 5" X 7" glossy black and white photograph an informal 3/4th pose of a smiling Harmon in suit and tie and smiling Knox in dress and pearls holding hands. ‎American screen composer whose Oscar-winning work includes "American in Paris" "Easter Parade" and "West Side Story"; in 1972 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Signed Commemorative Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Vienna Virginia on 30 August 1971 and with special postal cancellation "Filene Center - 1971 / Wolf Trap Farm Park / for Performing Arts". Single 8-cent U.S. flag stamp at upper right. Fine. Green fills the left side of this envelope with his bold handsome inscription and signature in black fineline: "To / Paul Johnston / with / good wishes -- / John Green." Original transmittal envelope present. Green directed and conducted the Wolf Trap Company orchestra for a time making this choice pairing relevant. unknown‎

‎This Canadian-American composer songwriter pianist singer and music educator was a popular vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley figure; Caruso put him "on the map" in 1913 when he recorded O'Hara's song "Your Eyes Have Told Me What I Did Now Know" and in 1914 he enjoyed his biggest hit "Tennessee I Hear You Calling Me"; during World War One his hit "K-K-K-Katy" sold more than one million sheet music copies; he was also an early ethnomusicologist recording and collecting Native American music on wax cylinders -- some of which he later sang himself in early Victor and Edison recordings; in 1945 he was elected president of the Composers-Authors Guild; all told he composed more than 500 popular and patriotic songs. Printed DS 9" X 12" 6pp n.p. 1943 January 25. Very good. Mildest bit of age toning. Sheet music for "I Was the Tree: Sacred Song" with music by O'Hara and lyrics by Daniel S. Twohig published by R.L. Huntinger New York NY in 1937. Across the top of the front cover he inscribes and signs it large and bold in blue fountain pen: "For a great basso William Wahlert / Compliments & best wishes / of the composer. / Geoffrey O'Hare / Jany 25: / 1943." The 6th and last leaf consists of O'Hara and Twohig's song "Soft Were Your Hands Dear Jesus." Interesting unusual piece. unknown‎

‎Poet best remembered for "The Man with the Hoe." Partly-printed ADS 1p 7¼" X 10½" West New Brighton NY 1929 September 21. Very good. Updating form sent out by "Who's Who in America" for their 1930-31 edition on orange stock with Markham's 2" X 3" biographical entry from the previous edition affixed onto the blank center area. Markham has written on the wide margin "is frequently called the leader of the Democratic movement in American poetry" and "Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters" plus one minor correction. At the bottom he signs and gives his address. An editor has made marks and drawn lines in green ink through most of Markham's additions; two checkmarks near the signature barely touch two letters; there are several other editor's marks in pencil and red pencil. ‎This engineer joined the Boeing company in 1962 as head of their aeronautical electronics division and soon rose to vice president where he gained fame for spearheading the race to develop the 747 jumbo jet a massive management and engineering achievement as well as an enormous financial gamble that ushered in a new age of air transport; he served as president from 1972 to 1985 their longest ever. Signed Postal Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Jamaica New York on 12 April 1970. Single 20-cent "Audubon 1785-1851" air mail stamp at upper right. NOT a First Day Cover but left side bears a large circular purple inkstamp commemorating "First TWA 747 Service New York-Paris." To the right of this in the "sweet spot" Stamper signs large and bold in black ballpoint. Most unusual. Comes with original transmittal envelope and TNS secretarial 1p 7¼" X 10¼" Seattle WA 1970 May 11. Addressed to Paul Johnston. Stock certificate "Construction Stock" never filled in or issued for shares in the Mississippi & Missouri Railroad Company bearing a superb bold Dix signature as president of the organization. Printed entirely in deep green with a handsome vignette depicting a puffing locomotive crossing the plains amidst a herd of stampeding buffalo with several Indians in the foreground one horseback observing; three smaller vignettes depict a steamboat an Indian warrior and an Indian mother with her child. ‎This Union officer a brevet general awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor is credited with inventing dynamite circa 1866 independently from Alfred Nobel; he invented other explosive manufacturing processes as well and from 1868 to 1903 operated an explosives plant in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania. Gregg who was in charge of gathering appropriate noteworthies for the dedication of an equestrian statue of General Joseph Hooker. Very good. Slight age toning. On black-bordered mourning stationery Oliver thanks Gregg "that I shall be so generously provided for. at the Brunswick Hotel. ‎This editor and writer edited the hugely popular "Collier's Weekly" 1903-12 and "Harper's Weekly" 1913-16 and became so highly regarded he was named U.S. minister to Denmark in 1919; his books include biographies of American statesman such as George Washington Daniel Webster and Abraham Lincoln. TLS 1p 5½" X 8½" New York NY 1912 April 18. Addressed to George Ade 1866-1944 American humorist and playwright. Near fine. "Are you going to the conventions at Chicago and Baltimore" writes Hapgood on "Collier's" letterhead referring to the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. "If so what would you think of Collier's as a medium for your impressions I am sure McCutcheon or anyone else you might prefer would be glad to work with you. If you will consider this idea at all I should like to know also how much you would charge. I expect to be at both conventions myself and should much enjoy seeing you." The letter is docketed by Ade himself: at the upper left in his large distinctive hand he pencils a huge "A / ans" to note he had replied. Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist John T. McCutcheon was a Purdue University classmate of Ade's and a lifelong pal as well as illustrator of Ade's "Chicago Record" daily feature "Stories of the Streets and of the Town" in the 1890s. Hapgood's solicitation paid off for while Ade apparently did not attend the convention at his then-hometown of Chicago he did attend the Baltimore convention and in the 13 July 1912 issue of "Collier's" his article "The Baltimore Affair from Three Angles" appeared see Dorothy Ritter Russo's "A Bibliography of George Ade" page 232. ‎The noted French conductor and violinist was the first to conduct Handel's "Messiah" 1873; as a devout supporter of Richard Wagner he also conducted the first French performance of "Lohengrin" in Paris in 1887 which sparked street demonstrations from a patriotic group denouncing him as unpatriotic. ALS in French 2pp 5" X 7" Paris France 1888 January 2. Addressed to "Cher Monsieur Street." Very good. Though cryptic it seems he pens a newspaper or magazine editor who commiserated with whom about the 1887 Wagner protests. Reads in part: "I thank you very much. for your sympathy which you wish to show me. I am going to give some orders immediately so that things go as you indicated relating to the Morning without constraint of course." A handsome example boldly penned in black ink. unknown‎

‎When Joan Fontaine plays Rachmaninoff's 2nd Concerto in the 1950 film "September Affair" it's actually a recording of this American classical pianist you're hearing; he debuted while a G.I. in Carnegie Hall in 1943 and toured the country in the 1960s as part of a popular Grammy-winning trio along with cellist Gregor Piatigorsky and violinist Jascha Heifetz. IPS 8" X 10" n.p. 1984. Fine. Dramatic half-length portrait of a white-haired Pennario in tuxedo performing set against an entirely black background. At upper left in bright bold white he inscribes and signs it "To John A. Leiser -- / With the good wishes of / Leonard Pennario / 1984." Outstanding contrast. ‎The dean of Columbia Law School went on to serve as attorney general under Coolidge before joining the U.S. Supreme Court as associate justice 1925-41 and chief justice 1941-46. Partly-printed AMS 4pp 5 3/4" X 9¼" Englewood NJ 1913 November 24. Very good. "Who's Who in America" questionnaire filled out entirely in Stone's hand starting with full name occupation address birthdate and going into education marital status professional associations clubs etc. Most printed questions bear brief responses and a few namely military record and list of books written did not apply and were left blank. Truly unique a fascinating and exceptionally early biographical record by the future chief justice. Accompanied by a striking 6" X 8" steel engraving of Stone. Fine. unknown‎
