‎Very Good. 1970. On offer are two super large 3-ring binders of newspaper clippings magazine articles and ephemera being an homage and tribute to the Queen of crime fiction writers Agatha Christie. The binders were created by a reference librarian who was a super fan of the author and also an extremely well organized fan at that. Items include or relate to: the movie "Agatha" and other Christie related movies; announcements of the death of Poirot; the death of Christie; press releases; catalogue pages; postcards; bibliography virtually anything related to Christie. Circa 1970s the archive is in mostly good condition some toning of newspaper clippings and a few unfortunate splotched pages where something like rubber cement was used. We quickly noted other oddments such as a program for Ten Little Indians play autographed by director William Morris; photos of Angela Lansbury and cast for "Miss Marple" filming; snapshots of studio lots etc. Utterly unique and probably impossible to duplicate this archive of materials. ‎1936 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A BITTER RESENTFUL SELF ABSORBED NEW WIFE OF A MEDICAL DOCTOR WORKING HIS WAY OUT HIS MARRIAGE‎

‎Cleveland OHIO OH. Very Good. 1936. On offer is an original manuscript diary and fascinating piece of Americana being a diary written by a woman who seems to be the most self centered young woman that one can imagine. Of the 2/3 or so filled diary has entries dripping with self absorption brimming with self entitlement with a backdrop of physical pain and illness this woman may or may not being feeling. A snippet that says much: 'one of Bill's patients died last night at 12:30 so my sleep was broken…' later in a very serious tone: 'Mother just discovered Tommy our canary bird dead. We didn't even know he was sick.' This woman is a psychology thesis in human form. While unidentified we believe she is married to a Doctor William Bill Schiller though it could be Schillier. Our author is a late 20s maybe early 30s woman recently married but her family may have pushed her into it somehow. A newish doctor still wanting to go back to school for surgical training he works day and night. He is most likely staying out on purpose and by August they are in the process of divorcing. She writes: 'Spent all afternoon trying to chase up my will o'wisp husband who had a call to make. It annoys me trying to find him all the time.' Parallel to his excessive work is her procrastination and failure as an author of children's books and magazine articles. She notes one rejection notice after another. The diary is littered with complaints: he is cheap he is inattentive he is a mamma's boy he is unfeeling and on. Physically she complains about back pain toothache heart palpitations always tired having the 'jumps' all over. She complains that people think she just has a case of 'nerves'. She complains of pains in her legs. She takes shots for pain and in the writing one can see how she gets groggy and the writing gets sloppier. It seems that she takes the shots frequently. She is jealous of the relationship between her husband and his mother and his aunt and is sarcastic about them several times. He works long hours and she complains that she is left alone far too much and suggests that he is having relationships with other women. She thinks he is cold and distant from her. At one point she writes: 'I suppose I ought to get 'continental attitude' toward marriage. Along with the complaints are some tidbits of the times: news of the Simpson affair in England she admires the King's passion that he would throw it all away for his woman playing the new game Monopoly going to Kaase's Restaurant charity work . The holidays make for interesting reading as she dwells on her loss of her husband and is bitter. At no time in the diary does she ever take any responsibilty for what is happening to her it is always someone else's fault. Many names and relatives names are written about inside and local collector or historians may well establish the exact specifics of these people. Her diary covers the full year minus a week in December including her daily routine her marriage to a U.S. serviceman stationed at Battle Creek Michigan when the war ended as recorded. The couple moved to Northwood New Hampshire upon his discharge. Hazel's family was from Worcester Mass. 45 Lake Avenue. Her father Clarence Crandell had a canoe rental business on the lake. Many families and names mentioned in the diary and some notes and memorabilia inserted including her list of wedding invitations. ‎1884 CHARMING HANDWRITTEN ACCOUNT OF ONE LEICESTER FAMILY'S TRAVELS IN NORTH WALES‎

‎Brynmair the Morfa Conway Wales Great Britain UK. Very Good. 1884. On offer is an utterly charming diary of a trip to North Wales by a man and his family in 1884. The journal is approximately 60 pages many with some small and excellent vignette pen and ink drawings and in a cultured and quite nice handwriting. The diary begins as he catches a train at Chester setting the amusing tone: "Caution! When about to travel by rail always give yourself plenty of time - do not leave anything to the last minute - otherwise you may have to rush off with your chin adorned with a stubble of nine and twenty hours growth - your wristbands unfastened and with several absolute necessities left behind." A little drawing of his lodgings Brynmair the Morfa Conway adorns one page. He meets up with some friends. He goes to church St. John's. He watches a cricket match Conway vs Bethesda but thinks the play 'second rate'. He also watches some tennis players noting that 'it is not the completeness of the costume which marks the player'. Some singers offer their services - perhaps 'black face' minstrels judging by the terms he uses. The party decides to 'do' Snowden - possible in one day and there is a long description of the journey and the ascent and they reach the summit hotel where he criticizes the coffee as being little better than dishwater. There are a number of small sketches to accompany the Snowdon venture. There are a number of small comical drawings of the boatman who turns up every day offering his services should they like to hire a boat for rowing - this is something of a standing joke. They take a look onboard the training ship 'Cleo' manned by young boys in training for the navy again a number of sketches illustrate the trip. The diary is written on colored pages in a well bound album with a decorative cover. All in all a lovely and amusing snapshot of Victorian Conway. On offer is an original letter written in English dated Haut Upper Congo Nov 14th 1906 by an unknown female writer who appears to be the wife of a missionary who was being prosecuted by the Congo Police casual research suggest this is possibly the British Reverend Edgar Stannard. The letter specifically refers to implication in the "Commandant Hagström affair." The tremendous political controversy surrounded a charge of libelling Congo police officer Hagström made by the Governor General of the Congo Free State and King Leopold against the Reverend who accused Hagström of practicing brutality and cannibalism. On offer is the extraordinary manuscript vade mecum - a catchall diary journal genealogical record and history of a very large successful family most of whom are renowned doctors hunters and military men from Ireland. Handwritten by David Moore Lindsay in 1899 this leather notebook is jammed with family trees autographs including clip signatures notes on his Black Watch service secret societies of which he is addressed as Sir David was a highly placed Knight of the Red Cross Knight Templar Knight of Malta of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem etc. the family's Norman connections Mount Royal Quebec connections plus when discoverer of the North Pole Admiral Peary died he wrote two pages of his memories of Peary and his colleague Stefansson whom Lindsay both knew well. Dr. Lindsay is an amazing man: traveller explorer big game hunter successful soldier renowned ophthalmologist and superbly detailing his life and times. In many ways this is also a biographical mine of information of famed General Sam Steele of Canada as a goodly percentage of the 150 odd pages of the journal are dedicated to. Collectors and researchers would be hard pressed to find a more balanced picture of a post Victorian gentleman's life with as rich and broad a background as interesting as Lindsay's. Littered with ephemera news clippings charts diagrams photos postcards including an enlistment card for E J Steele April 03 1883 a Grand Trunk Railway ticket Scotland 1927 licence to kill game a 1926 Denver & Rio Grande Western Railway pass a tribute to General Sam Steele of the Lord Strathcona Horse Regiment of Canada. As a Major he distinguished himself when Louis Riel attempted his second rebellion related through Lindsay's wife plus much much more. ‎SALISBURY MILLS ORANGE COUNTY NEW YORK NY. Very Good. 1874. On offer are a large archive of 45 letters and related ephemeral material for the family of Edith H. Chase of Salisbury Mills Orange County New York all dated between 1874 and 1887. The collection mainly consists of incoming letters approximately 33 to Edith Howser Chase with about half dated 1886-1887 when Edith would have been between the ages of 18 and 19 years old. Other letters are addressed to members of her family her grandmother Aunt Nellie and others as well as girlhood friends. Edith wrote several letters as well. There is much description of family domestic life and activities and health matters. Edith Howser Chase was born April 20 1868 and appears to have died in 1889. The circle of family and friends who are corresponding reach as far west as Manhattan Kansas to various towns in Missouri like Creve Coeur Foristell and Jonesburg. Edith's friends wrote from South Boston Massachusetts Brooklyn Greenpoint Binghamton New York and Dunmore Pennsylvania. The extended network of family is well illustrated with correspondence that spans from granddaughter to grandparents. The letters are mostly addressed to Edith at Salisbury Mills Orange County New York. Salisbury Mills is about 8 miles southwest of Newburgh New York. Edith's grandfather J. K. Schultz apparently moved to Missouri from New York as did some of her other relatives. Her Aunt Nellie a correspondent also wrote Edith from Manhattan Kansas in 1885. The collection consists of a total of 180 manuscript pages plus related ephemeral items including 6 pages of scrap paper with notes copied poems etc. dated 1883-1885 1 postcard addressed to Andrew Schultz Chester NY dated 1886 1 manuscript Christmas poem dated 1883 by E. H. Chase and 1 card with Boston Linen Company letterhead. The letters are all in good to very good condition. Some contain age-toning or ink fading or both but all the letters are legible and readable. Each letter comes with its original envelope attached. Sample Text: “South Boston. Nov. 7 1883. Dear Friend Edith. I concluded that I might as well answer as I received your welcomed epistle November Second and I thought I would never get an answer. I was very glad when you said you took music lessons. How far are you I suppose you have a piece have you not Have you got your organ yet I should think Josie must be getting quite large by this time is she not Have you still kept your cow I suppose you go for her every day the same as usual. I should think it would be very lonesome for your Grandma now since your Uncle John has moved away I presume you have not seen Rover since have you I should think it would be lonesome now as Winter is approaching.I suppose it looks desolate over the forests.Now Edith I know this is not a very nice letter and hope you will excuse it as U will try to write a nicer one next time. Your loving Friend. Katie.”; “May 4 / 86. Manhattan Kansas. Dear Niece I received a letter from you about two weeks ago and should of answered sooner had I done as I ought. We were very glad to hear that you were all in so good health but sorry to hear of the baby’s death although no doubt better off than in this suffering world.”; “St. Louis Mo. Oct. 23rd 1886. Dear Edith Will now commence to answer your welcome letter which I rec’d since here in the big City. It was forwarded to me as was several others. Am glad you all enjoy such good health and it such was not the case with me don’t know what would become of me but I am never sick or at least have never been so far and would hate awful had to be sick here;/ I came down the First of this month had a place the ninth and went to work same day.by the way I have a present I don’t remember telling you of in the shape of a ring plain gold but is very pretty. My dutchman presented me with it and he is evening down to see me soon.You must write to me soon Edith as I get so lonesome. Your aunty Nell.” Background: Edith Howser Chase was born April 20 1868 and appears to have died in 1889. She was the daughter of Joseph M. Chase and Mary Anna Schultz 1847-1910 who married about 1864. Her mother was the daughter of Jacob K. Schultz and Helen J. Howser 1826-1884. The Schultz family appears to have been from Cornwall Orange Co. New York. Edith's father was a brick mason. He served in the Civil War with the 169th Regiment New York Volunteers. He enlisted as a private in 1864 at the age of 24 with Company F of the 142nd Regiment and transferred to the 169th in June of 1865. The 1880 Census has Edith living with her parents and siblings at the 2nd Enumeration District for Cornwall Orange County New York. According to the 1910 Census Edith appears to have had 12 siblings but her parents outlived 9 of the children including Edith. The Chase family as well as the Schultz family are buried at the Bethlehem Cemetery adjoining the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church at Bethlehem Cornwall Orange Co. New York. On offer is a sensational archive of historically significant original manuscript diaries of Stanley Thomas Cross an well placed employee of the BBC British Broadcasting Company acting as a 'switch-censor' at the League of Nations Permanent Court of International Justice and United Nations International Court of Justice at The Hague under Edvard Isak Hambro b.1911 - d.1977; was a Norwegian politician; the 25th President of the United Nations General Assembly 1970 - 1971 and also served on the UN's International Law Commission from 1972 to 1977. The historical significance of the diaries is inestimable as they provide primary information on the day-to-day inner workings of the Court of Justice over a period of 25 years spanning the Second World War as well as of the activities of a wartime BBC 'switch censor'. Cross does a super job of describing his employment at the League of Nations 'jet-setting' for the BBC between London England; Geneva Switzerland; The Hague Holland and Purnode Belgium plus other exotic locales. By diarizing his own life he also captures much of the work he does for Edvard Hambro providing an almost parallel `biography` of Hambro`s work. Over 35 volumes from 1907 - 1950 lacking 1914-1919 1940 1945 1946 Cross over writes most days misses some but collector's researchers and historians of the era International law and post-World War I Europe will find a treasure trove of insider details. The diaries are written by a cultured educated individual in international affairs though he is not afraid to let his prejudices` show: on November 15th Cross is present at the first session of the General Assembly at its new headquarters in Geneva 'I wore the old tail coat got for H T Cs wedding for the third time in my life'. On 12 May 1936: 'Council met 1700-1800 re Ethiopian affair. Ital delegation left Geneva!!' On 3 September 1924: 'Exciting day at Court. Election of President for 1925-7. Loder to be reelected & was exceedingly upset with result & in my opinion behaved in a contemptible & undignified manner. Moore was the best candidate but there were always 4 votes stoutly opposed to him I suspect coming from the Jap & the 2 S. American Dagos. . To day Thursday morning Loder who had been talked to by Finlay announced that he withdrew his candidature; Moore did the same that being the bargain between them. After several more ballots & another adjournment Huber was elected President much against his wishes.' He describes the effects on London of German bombing. On 11 May 1941: 'Left Blackheath 1630 had to take several trams & buses to get to town because of results of Blitz. Crossed Lambeth Bridge on foot. Most of London Bridges closed. Ho of Commons Westmr Abbey Deanery & other buildings have been hit. Also Big Ben but it still functions.' 13 May 1941: 'Had to do a Belgian transmission 9am Then for a walk to see results of blitz. BIO NOTES: Stanley Thomas Cross c.1884 - 1950 was educated at Christ's Hospital London and Pembroke College Oxford. After a period as a schoolmaster and service in the Great War he worked as a translator at the League of Nations Permanent Court of International Justice at The Hague. On the outbreak of the Second World War he was employed at the BBC in London as a 'switch censor'; at the end of 1944. By 1947 he was back translating at The Hague where he worked closely with Edvard Isak Hambro later President of the U.N. by whom he was held in high regard. Thereafter he returned to the Hague where he worked at the Registry of the United Nations International Court of Justice until his retirement in 1949. In August 1949 Cross retired to Purnode where beset with money worries he died six months later. Loosely inserted in the last volume is a manuscript account 4to 1 p by Cross's wife Alice of his last day and death after an attack of angina. Mostly 12mo the first six are uniform by W. Straker Ltd of Ludgate Hill; the rest 'Boot's Home Diary' in various colours and slightly larger format from 1939. All in good condition: lightly-aged and with a few preliminary leaves not containing diary entries torn out by Cross from the volumes for 1920 and 1921. Later volumes with accounts at end. On offer is a super original historic 1943 manuscript and ephemeral relic of the United States War effort American enthusiasm for the cause and a fascinating home front look at a young American woman's contribution and service. Handwritten by 25 year old Ellen Frances Tobey later Washburn of Kittery Point Maine she worked at the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard and kept a small 2½ x 4¼ inch diary wherein Ellen did a wonderful job filling the small book with all the details and duties of her life and those around her. Of particular interest to historians and collectors of the war ephemera will be the treasured mementoes Ellen included in the book being 19 launch tags each created to commemorate the completion and launching of submarines that would soon confront the German and Japanese navies. The submarines launched are: USS Capelin USS Crevalle USS Apogon USS Batfish the renowned USS Archerfish USS Burrfish USS Sand Lance USS Pampanito USS Picuda USS Parche USS Bang USS Pilotfish USS Pintado USS Pipefish USS Pomfret USS Sterlet USS Piranha USS Plaice and the USS Queenfish. Ellen a very active Pythian sister was born January 9th1918 died in April 1st 2000 was we believe in the purchase section of the supply department for the Navy Yard and seems to have made a point of attending the submarine launches. The launch tags are stapled by the string not the tag itself into the diary on the days of the launch. Overall the book and the tags are VG. BIO NOTES: LIVERMORE FALLS Maine - Ellen F. Washburn 82 died late Sunday night April 1 in the comfort of her home on Munsey Avenue with her family at her side. She was born Jan. 9 1918 in Kittery Point Maine the daughter of Charles G. and Cordelia Wildes Tobey. She received her education in Beverly Mass. graduating from Beverly High School in the Class of '35. She continued her education at Hawthorne Business School in Salem Mass. She was employed at a fish market in Salem Mass. and moved back to Kittery Point where she was employed by a finance company. She retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after 20 years of service and on August 25 1962 married S. Paul Washburn at the Kittery Point Congregational Church. After moving to Livermore Falls she was one of the first employees during the construction of the Androscoggin Mill International Paper Co. and worked in the engineering department. He later was a bookkeeper for New England Furniture Co. and Dunton Department Stores in Livermore Falls. She was active in many fraternal organizations. She was a 50-year member of the Rebekahs the Order of the Eastern Star and Pythian Sisters. A precious illustrated Spanish edition of this classic treatise on evangelical perfection through spiritual exercises Combattimento spirituale The spiritual combat with engravings by Martin Engelbrecht. This work is commonly attributed to Juan de Castaniza who is here identified in the preface. Castaniza a Benedictine monk of Ona active in Italy was known for his chronicles of the life of P. Rivadeneyra and St. Romuald. The work was written by the Italian father Lorenzo Scupoli however and translated shortly after its appearance by Castaniza into Spanish. Combate espiritual in this pocket-sized and compact duodecimo format is a handbook of devotional exercises presented in sixty-six chapters modeled after Loyola's famous text. It aims at perfecting the soul through prayer meditation and examination of the conscience. It is thus a guide for the conquest of the spirit over unruly passions the senses and conscious acts offering a method for self-regulation leading to virtue and salvation. Indeed it prescribes the imitation of Christ's life through empathic contemplation on the Passion assisted by the text and images. The stirring devotional image of the Crucifixion engraved by Engelbrecht 1684-1756 depicts the cross as the fountain of life "apud me est fons vitae"; Christ's blood pours into the cups of his disciples who stand at his feet. The engraving is appropriate for the work a visual experience provoking empathy for Christ through inward meditation and complete sensitization through reflection on the image. The frontispiece also by Engelbrecht depicts Christ as the exemplar of complete virtue. An unsigned engraving of St. Francis de Sales 1567-1622 accompanies a short elegy by this great ascetic bishop of Geneva who endorsed in his spiritual teachings the mortification of the senses will and mind for the sake of perfection. The more simple depiction of St. Francis de Sales is likely produced by a different engraver as Engelbrecht's compositions are here characterized by fully-modeled figures and atmospheric effects through the use of fine linework. Engelbrecht was the brother of Christian Engelbrecht 1672-1735. These well-known printsellers and engravers were dominant figures in Augsburg at this time and are remembered for their portrait studies and their landscape religious and allegorical illustrations. Martin is also noted for his engravings used in perspective boxes or peepshows. Scupoli's work makes its first appearance in the Italian in Venice in 1589. By the mid- seventeenth century this very popular devotional work was frequently republished in German and Latin. There are no traces of the first Spanish edition which must have appeared shortly after the Italian edition. This present illustrated edition a late Spanish translation of this important work reproduces the text as it originally appeared in Castaniza's translation. All Spanish translations of this text remain very rare. This popular meditative manual produced in this small format for a large and pious public instructively suggests the ways in which its readers responded to the text and images. ‎Boston New Bedford Roxbury MASS. Very Good. 1876. On offer is the 1876 handwritten manuscript diary of 'Jas William E Spooner' as evidenced by his writing on the front endpaper. This book will be of particular interest to historians of the Boston/New Bedford where Mr. Spooner resided and presidential history. The diary begins October 1876 through April 1879. While he does write of personal and business matters the political history in the book are from Mr. Spooner's many entries regarding the contested presidential election of 1876 between Samuel Tilden and Rutherford Hayes. Here are some brief highlights: October 24 entry describes the Grant torch light procession of the Republicans through Boston. October 27th entry describes the "Carpet baggers and the horribles which looked very comical.Flag Raising on Ruggles St Democrats" October 30th describes the Democratic torchlight Procession down through Faneuil Hall. November 3rd's lengthy entry describes the author's travels and the election results - "one night now after the political campaign is over it is hard to determine who shall be the President there being trouble is a few of the southern states fraud claimed by both the Republican and Decmorat Partys. Grant had sent troops south and men of both partys have gone down to have a fair count of the voted but not terms of settlement have been arrived at yet the men that are running for President are Samuel Tilden Governor of New York and Ruther B Hayes Governor and Ohio and Wheeler Vice President. Both Republicans Tilden and Hendrick are elected according as the vote stands separate from a few of the southern states whether war will terminate this election remains to be found and both partys claim the victory today" Dec 11 entry "The political question remains still unsettled both candidates are claimed to have been elected" Other entries include commentary on the weather travels throughout the Boston area and down to Fairhaven / New Bedford; some boats in the New Bedford area are mentioned as is the Howland name. ‎BETTISFIELD PARK CAMP SHROPSHIRE ENGLAND. Very Good. 1918. On offer is an excellent well filled original 1918 World War I manuscript diary handwritten by British Army Officer C.H. McCallum while not specified directly in the book other related items in the original archive clearly identify the author who we learn from his service record in the diary spent the whole of 1918 in Britain where he was in command of the 568th HSE Home Service Employment Company part of the Labour Corps at Bettisfield Park Camp in Flintshire although the diarist himself records Bettisfield as being in Shropshire. We also learn that he was on active service in France and Belgium during 1916 and 1917 including a period with the Border Regiment on the Somme. McCallum writes of having been invalided back from France and as was often the case with injured men he was seconded to the HSE as a result of injuries sustained while on active service. We note a particularly interesting historic anomaly being that a number of the entries in the diary refer to German prisoners of war on camp and the diary does sometimes read as though it was the diarist's responsibility to manage these men. Thusly we believe the HSE Company was used to provide guards at Bettisfield. This would be an interesting fact given most research sources describe Bettisfield Park as a base for the No 2 Reserve Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery. We cannot find any historical record of prisoners of war at Bettisfield. McCallum does a super job as a diarist writing an entry for every day of the year many quite detailed and lengthy detailing day-to-day life in the camp and there are plenty of insights into the life of a home-based officer including references to comings and goings among his fellow officers courts martial logistical matters and so on all well mixed with the minutiae of his private life: particularly his wife Nancy and a new baby who live at Byfield in Northamptonshire. He follows military events closely in the press and frequently makes observations about the progress of the war. Of course this being 1918 the diary does include Armistice Day which he marks with a low key entry one that was perhaps characteristic of serving soldiers. He is pleased the war is over but seems quite low key perhaps fatigued with the War: 'A Great Day. Mons occupied by the British at dawn. Armistice signed 5 a.m. Fighting ceased at 11 a.m. The bells rang in the evening and people put out flags. Went into WIH's and drank a bottle of beer!' Overall VG.We note that we also have McCallum's 1929 India Service diary which he wrote as he assumed command of the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry. On offer are three 3 original handwritten manuscript letters authored by Paul Gillie of Lakeview in the Nicola Valley British Columbia Canada. Two are dated 1883 January 15th and June 16th the last dated February 18th 1886. Gillie writes in the first two of land matters including of particular interest the settlement of ownership of Indian land wherein Mr. Gillie notes "The Indians are to get 15 acres and I am to get 175 acres of pasture land. That is all the pasture land on my side of the Creek". The early letters also ask the recipient Mr. Lettier of Victoria British Columbia to have his Crown Land registered as he has paid for it. The later letter makes reference to persistent requests within the last few months for the Crown Land registry and he assumes it is lost in transit.Each letter is complete with one being double-sided. Two are on cream-colored lined paper and the other is on unlined white paper. Each letter measures 5 inches x 8 inches. ‎PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA PA. Very Good. 1932. On offer is an amazing archive of three 3 original manuscript diaries 1932 1934 and 1935 handwritten by Sidney Irving Brody future medical doctor Naval Captain flight surgeon and the first commanding officer at the Naval Hospital at Quonset Point. Sidney was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Extensive biographic notes follow the description. The first diary was written during his senior year at Northeast High School where he was an excellent student. The other two diaries were written while he was attending the University of Pennsylvania with the latter written during the author's senior year at U of P and he wrote of taking an aptitude test for a medical career and making application to medical school. He eventually graduated from the Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. This diary is a stand out for a number of reasons. On the one hand this is a truly unique study in the beginnings of a young man's adulthood with a considerable future ahead of him that will require him to perform great physical and emotional feats. The author reveals himself intimately expressing his feeling and even base desires. Researchers and historians of men's studies or gender studies of this era will be appreciative of the opportunity to see his psyche revealed even before he ever began his studies of medicine we do note however that Sidney studied anatomy and chemistry in relation to the opposite sex with gusto and successfully so it seems. It really is quite unique to read a young man so expressive in a diary. The 1932 book is quite full and there is an entry for every day. He wrote about his daily activities both school and social. He was an avid tennis player and included in this lot is a framed Tennis Team award. His father bought him a car in his senior year of high school and while attending college the author lived at home. In the summer he was a camp counselor and also traveled to NYC and Atlantic City where his family vacationed each year. Dr. Brody was very interested in all sports and wrote about meeting some baseball greats: April 13."Babe" Ruth and his wife came to school today. We gave him a cup April 19."Mickey" Cochrane came up to school today. Interviewed him. He gave a nice talk Jun 19.Got up early and went to school. The St Louis Cards were there. Met them." He had many girlfriends throughout these years and seemed to put them in two categories - those he took on formal dates and treated with the utmost respect and those that he either picked up in his car or those that would "neck": Jan 24 1932 Got up late and lounged around. Went down to the library about 4:00. After supper went over to Stan's. Took Rochelle to Beth Sholom dance. Was pretty nice. She seemed to take more interest in the other guys. I guess I'll take someone else out next time I go out. Feb 1 Arose late as usual - lounged around in the afternoon. Today was Rochelle's 17 th birthday and I had the extreme honor of taking her out. Bought her an expensive box of candy and we went out with Milt and Eleanor. Went to the State and the Golden Gate. Spent a lot of money tonight. Had a nice time. Sep 21 Drove Stan to the doctor. Then we went to Ethel Horvanti's where I saw Adelle. I then painted the fenders and lights on my car. At night I went over Cooper's where the gang was. Walked Rochelle home. Sat and talked to her. She said that she thought she was in love with me !!! Believe it or not !!!!! Dec 31 Went over to Rochelle's in the afternoon. Had it out with her. Then went to Ruth Koppenheim's. Wright took Rochelle to Harry Grossman's affair at the Ben Franklin. Kissed Rochelle for the first time in over a year. Got in at 9:30 Had a swell time. July 30 Got up at a reasonable hour. Then went to Dittenfast and played tennis with Mort. Had a nice match. After supper at Mort's we went around trying to pick up some broads. Cruised around the whole city including Woodside. Finally got two near home. Took them for a ride and got a good feel. Aug 5 Arose late and sent over to Rochelle's for about an hour with Lena. Left and drove her to get her bathing suit. After supper took family for a ride. Then got Mort and we took the Germantown girls for a ride. Got a good feel and was stopped for driving one handed. May get a summons." A couple of times the author described his sexual experience in clinical terms once adding he didn't have a very good time. He also wrote of problems with girls: "Aug 24 Up early. Was Bernice's birthday. Went over Ruth Koppenheims with Stan Rochelle and Audrey. Audrey fainted on account of Stan not loving her. At night called for Rochelle and Audrey at the Colby theater. Went up to Rochelle's apartment. Audrey tried to take iodine and commit suicide the dope because Stan didn't love her. He had to do some tall convincing to get her to believe him. Took them for a ride. Dec 25 Lounged around in the afternoon. Had the family and friends over for dinner. At night took Mimi to RI . Rochelle was was there and I had my hands full." Although the author wrote much about his experiences with girls social activities parties etc. he approached adulthood with a sense of purpose in both his education and his path towards becoming a doctor. He often wrote about someone named Martin in the diaries. Martin must have been a physician as the author occasionally wrote of going to Philadelphia General with Martin. He once observed an autopsy and wrote of assisting in a couple of very minor surgeries. Martin seemed to have an influence on the author's decision to become a doctor: "Apr 6 Nothing much doing in school. After school went with Harry Green to Convention Hall. Saw General Motors exhibit. Went in Phila General Hospital and saw Martin. Went all around Psychopathic department. Ate supper with him in the hospital. He then gave me material for talk. Came home and did lessons. Aug 11 Got up slightly late. Rochelle called up so I went over there. Stayed there all afternoon. At night got Mort and went over to Rochelle's. Went for a ride and stopped at Kemmer's. Came home and Uncle Steve and Martin and all the girls were here. Took them home. Martin showed me his place at the Hospital. It's swell. Mar 17 Arose pretty early and went to the Philadelphia General Hospital. Saw an autopsy. Apr 20 After school went over to Martin's. We then went to the Phila Gen Hospital and I made the rounds with him. Attended a conference led by Dr. Robinson." Sidney Irving Brody went on to graduate from the Hahnemann Medical College in 1941 He was affiliated with the Frankford Hospital in Philadelphia. The three diaries are all hardcover one is a Wanamaker the other two are slightly larger at 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" and both cover are attached but have detached from the spine on the front hinge. All three diaries have an entry for everyday of the year. Overall VG. BIO NOTES: Obituary: Sidney Brody 1st commanding officer of Quonset Naval Hospital dies at 96. Capt. Sidney I. Brody the first commanding officer of the Naval Hospital at Quonset Point and the first physician to pilot a Navy jet and land on an aircraft carrier died Saturday at his home in Brookline Mass. at the age of 96. A native of Philadelphia and the husband of the former Muriel Myers to whom he was married 69 years Brody was a pioneer in the field of aerospace medicine. When the Navy developed its F-9 jet he was the first to take it to an altitude of 60000 feet. Commissioned a Navy lieutenant junior grade in the Navy Medical Corps in 1942 Brody worked as a Navy flight surgeon in several venues including China and the Philippines when he developed his interest in flying according to his wife. By 1947 he had undergone training as a naval aviator and became the medical officer for Carrier Air Group 4 serving aboard the aircraft carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt. After becoming a physician and test pilot he served as a liaison to the Naval Bureau of Aeronautics and the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and in the early 1950s was part of team that developed the first pressurized flight suit for pilots for high-altitude flights. Brody eventually became the first senior medical officer aboard the Saratoga. Then influenced by President John F. Kennedy's physician Janet Travell he developed innovative treatments for myofascial pain discovering that sore throat pain often originates in the neck muscles. In 1966 he became the first commanding officer at the Naval Hospital at Quonset Point continuing there until his retirement as a Navy captain in 1970. It was then that he moved to Cumberland where he continued to practice internal medicine for 28 years focusing on chronic pain and immune disorders. He also taught for a short time at Brown Medical School and made rounds at Rhode Island Hospital. Miss Miles writes in a dark green leather journal style book which measures 4" by 6". The actual first entry is dated Sunday July 29th 1866 and the writing ends August 7th. It appears they are in England in the first entries and then later dates mention the Alps. It also appears she was traveling with her companion Nellie. Jeanie is a very spunky bright young woman as is evidenced in her 22 pages wherein she details her day to day activities and with great personality and observational skills. On another 20 pages she wrote poetry and mostly of a humorous and ribald nature. Little wear on the cover pages very nice. ‎1915 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF EARLY WORLD WAR I TORONTO‎

‎TORONTO ONTARIO ON CANADA. Very Good. 1915. On offer is a very interesting 1915 handwritten manuscript diary kept by a young lady living in early World War I Toronto Ontario. There are entries for every day from January 1st until August 1915 after which the entries are sporadic. She was a sales clerk at Eaton's Department Store. In March she suddenly became ill and was hospitalized. She was operated on the same day and remained in hospital recovering for about two weeks. She doesn't identify her illness. The entries take one back to a simpler Toronto as she notes her day to day life including day trips to Port Credit and the Toronto Islands skating parties at Varsity Stadium seeing soldiers at church work friends family etc. She also records the deaths of an aunt and uncle in Detroit in late 1914. The family name of the girl was McClelland. In august she appears to have begun seeing a young man named Harold Byers. Later we find he has joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force. This is a very charming glimpse into life in Toronto in 1915. Richard Vaux 1816-1895 lawyer congressmen penologist writes to Purdy declining an invitation to address the Tammany Society or Columbian Order at the celebration of the "Eighth of January" and he also writes extolling the virtues of Andrew Jackson: "Our country will ever remain under an enduring and unrepudiatable debt of gratitude to Andrew Jackson. As a soldier - the anniversary of the memorable day you are about to celebrate annually gives fresh color to the undying laurels which victory has placed upon his name. As a statesman - his politicks principals and policy will continue to be regarded as sacred a legacy as was ever bequeathed to this nation . As a man - his character has lost nothing by comparison with that of any who have adorned this age. As a Christian - the closing scenes of his eventful life have testified that he was among the "pure in heart" to whom the promise was vouchsafe that they "should see God ." . Andrew Jackson his victory and his veto the one made him immortal as a soldier the other as a democrat.
