‎1845 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND JOURNAL OF THE BUSY AND SUPPORTIVE WIFE OF A CIRCUIT RIDING PREACHER IN SOUTH EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS‎

‎New Bedford Massachusetts MA. Good. 1845. On offer is the original 1845 manuscript diary of the very busy wife of a religious figure Chapin was a circuit-rider in south-eastern Massachusetts Mrs. Chapin details a daily life from March 6th 1845 through March 1st 1846 that typically consists of a round of "calls" made or received. On some days she sees six or seven visitors mostly in small groups each of whom she carefully and fully names. She also seems regularly to host sometimes for weeks an inordinate number of Chapin family members: Samuel Mary and George William C. G.W. Sarah Laura. Elizabeth Aunt Betsy Amory who dies in the course of the diary Seth Maria and she also pays them frequent visits. She regularly attends "female prayer meetings" "Maternal meetings" and meetings of societies such as the "C.F. Society" where she serves on the Board and which sometimes meets in Providence and the "F.M. Society" as well as the Seaman s Friend Society. One of these the C.F. Society clearly seems to deal with social issues and in January of 1846 the group meets to decide whether "we give Mrs. Cockran her children." The churchwomen voted to "relinquish our claim" on the youngsters after hearing testimonials about their good character. The same group also decides "to send John Ryan to sea sailing May 1 from New Bedford in a whaling ship" entry of April 1. Another unnamed group of women that she belongs to decides "to form an association to promote education at the West" and our author is appointed "Collector for High Street" Church. Her other duties include regular visits to the sick and as soon as there is an accident such as Sarah C. being thrown from her carriage and badly hurt or a deathbed scene she and Mr. Chapin rush to the spot. On October 4 for instance they were "awaked this morn at 1 o clock by Sanford s coming to tell us that brother Amory lay at the point of death." Mr. Chapin goes but is too late. They also attend over the course of the year a number of funerals including those of children. The writer also has a housewifely side. She mentions hiring a succession of women to help in the house her own visits to a dressmaker for a "bombazine" dress the fact that she and her circle "have quilted 3 bed quilts made 2 comforters and quilted 4 skirts this autumn" Nov. 11 entry and that she and Mary Ann "made a carpet for my room." She also mentions S. Chapin's "machine" several times which seems to be a washing machine "price $10". On October 3rd she notes that it is her 53rd birthday and that she "spent the day mostly by myself I have renewedly dedicated myself to God and pray that I may spend the few remaining days allotted me here in his service and to his glory." She also does a super job with births deaths marriages etc. plus she mentions Boston Fall River Pawtuxet Warwick Uxbridge Tiverton Carbonville and Providence. The 43pp book is handwritten in a tight legible hand on lined paper dates captioned in the left margins. Bound in original flexible calf. 6.25" x 4". ‎1880 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DOUBLE TRIP TRAVEL DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A CHARMING VERY WELL WRITTEN YOUNG BOSTON MAN IN MAINE‎

‎FORT POINT PORT KITTERY MAINE ME. Good. 1880. On offer is an amazing original manuscript travel journal handwritten by Arthur Blackman a young Boston man who took a trip to Fort Point Maine in the summer of 1880 and then another trip to Kittery Point Maine in 1881. The young Mr. Blackman research suggests he may have been born in 1861 is staying at the very historical hotel called "Fort Point Hotel". Not only does he write an exciting journal about life at the hotel he writes about a man coming off the steamer who had "Swamp Fever" but also swimming boating saluting steamers and schooners on the bay evening entertainment girl trouble excursion to Stockton Springs Castine and Fort Knox and so much more. He has an absolutely super way of expressing himself on paper. The diary consists of 55 handwritten pages and his entries are detailed. He notes the Hotel's owner Mr. Porter also owns a noted yacht called "The Alpha". Adding further depth he drawn a map of Fort Knox in Bucksport Maine during his visit and tour there. Here are some snippets: 1880 "August 6th & 7th Started with Fred Lathe in the Steamer Cambridge for Fort Point Stockton at 5:20 P.M. Eat apples was not sick and went in at about night. Had a hard time getting to sleep the boat rumbled and thumped so….Arrived at about 10 o'clock. Was conducted to our rooms and immediately went in bathing. The water was as cold as I could imagine. Some girls in two boats sat and laughed and told Fred there was an undertow he replied that his toes were under them they hollered. We got a little acquainted with our situation and engaged a boat for the next week for $1.50. In the evening there was a hop and we sat and looked on. A man who looked like Joshua Whitcome asked us to dance and when we declined he asked if we were sick. Had a boss dinner and supper. Will describe here after. The man's name was Rawson from Bangor." "August 8th A very pleasant day it being Sunday. The people did not seem to notice the fact to any great extent. We went down on the rocks and in the tent and read. Pretty soon Mr. Porter let a seal out that they had caught in a salmon net when he was little. They had kept him in a little artificial pond with a rustic fence but it was too much trouble to keep him supplied with salt water so the whole crowd came out to see him go. They had a hard time but he got away at last. We sat on the rocks and saw the ships go by and wrote a letter home sending an bill of fare in it. I do not see how Mr. Porter can make enough money to pay expenses. They have about 30 servants including colored waiters chamber maids bell boys cooks stablemen boat men and clerks porters &c……" "August 9th We Fred and I who by the way dress act and eat and look alike eat breakfast early and went out in our boat with Mr. C. Chamberlain over to the village of Stockton. We rowed about a mile and then walked 3 miles and I bought a tooth brush for 15 cents and this blank book for 15 cents more on their trip in town and heading back…….In the evening the girls had a sort of an entertainment or what-ever-you-call-it composed of shadow pictures from Mother Goose. Duck as Fred proposed. When out in the bay we saluted the Steamer City of Bangor and she answered by returning the three whistles then we saluted a schooner and she dipped her top sail." "August 11th & 12th Rose late and went out to a yacht and met Mr. Savage who was in my class in the Conservatory the second term. He was in the Forward from Bristol a sloop with six other fellows who did not know enough to answer a salute. They loafed around all day with the large girls and danced in the evening. I took a lesson in dancing the Racquette from Misses Hilton Rawson and Lincoln. Played cards and retired…….Arose late and beat Mr. Chamberlain and papa at bowling. Saw the steamer come in from Boston and a man from Stockton who had just come from the South got off. He had swamp fever and could not move his leg. He twitched all over and looked as though he was dying. They carried him off in a wagon……." "August 18th The Jameson Guards and the Old Town Guards came over on an excursion and paraded. They walked crooked and kept their knees bent and did not keep step. The Old Town Guards were the better. Eight of them went through the drill splendidly and as I was about the only and was the first one that stopped one of them took off his cap to me…." "August 24th Rose early at 6:25 and read until the girls came down at 7:10 and 7:50 which was too late to go down into the woods for bush bark. While the girls were eating breakfast Claude and I played billiards. After the steamers came in we all went in bathing. After dinner I made a bush bark basket for Miss Hilton and wrote a letter to Fred. Read until supper time. In the evening the colored waiters had a concert. Contributions. They got about $20.00." "August 25th Went down on the rocks with two girls by the old bath houses near the pier while they sketched and read. Stayed there until dinner time and saw the sketches of the Captain of the Steam yacht who is quite an artist. After diner we three and Claude Porter sat on the piazza and talked. Then the girls went down on the rocks with Miss Clapp of South Boston sketching……" "August 27th Claude slept with me and we arose late very near 9. The girls rose later and we saw the steamer come in from Boston. I made a bush bark basket for Miss Sampson from Melrose and showed Mr. and Miss Clapp and Miss Phoebe a little about tennis. Sat in the parlor and had dinner. Bid good-bye all around and exchanged pictures with form. Two are to send me theirs when they get home. Waved my nose rag until I was out of sight of the hotel and then sat on the aft deck with the crowd and ate apples read and looked at scenery……." TO KITTERY PT. MAINE: "July 19th 1881 Day Book Revised. A general schedule of summer adventures at Kittery Pt. Maine between July 19th 1881 and August 1881. Left Boston by Eastern R.R. at 8:30 A.M. with friend of Chester's and arrived at Portsmouth at 10:45 A.M. where he left me and I took Mr. Keen's stage for the Pepperrell Hotel Kittery Pt. Me. I had an hour and a half stage ride on top which would have been very pleasant but for the many stops. I arrived at the house at about twelve o'clock having taken one and one half hours to ride four miles….The landlady was quite loquacious and asked my mother's age. No one else spoke to me. I tried the boat called the Dutch for the first and last time and hired the Ann Hutchinson for a week." "July 20th & 21st I played bagatelle considerable and rowed around in general. Ate my meals in silence and saw lots of mute girls……. I wrote full descriptions of the place and inhabitants to several people and played hermit because I could not help it. In the time after supper I was introduced to a boy in a peculiar manner…." "July 23rd Clam Bake. I was politely told to go around to the creek and carry my boat to the pier for transportation. There I met a midshipman and a friend who had another boat into which two of the best looking girls immediately jumped and much to my disgust and confusion left more for my boat but a homely disagreeable one and a young little one and the panic fellow who had the cramps and would not row. I of course rowed like a sucker to catch up with the other boat which had a huge head start……" "August 10th Did about the same as usual. Jeannie and Cora went in bathing with us including Chester Harry Rand and Gertrude Wall. Went to ride Saturday to York Beach and had a good three hours ride and had a general good time. We Harry Gertrude Jennie Cora Fred and I all went to Portsmouth in the steamer and ____went in the row boat to see Mrs. Foster and family and mama started for the Isle of Shoals. We then went up town and got some jolly candy….Papa came today and Harry Gert. Cora Jennie and Fred and I went to Portsmouth to meet him and came home on the top of the stage road blowing two fish horns. All serene. Evening moonlight boat ride and waltz." ‎USS ALTAIR. Good. 1933. On offer is a super very interesting archive of one amazing American sailor's service aboard the USS Altair. Included is a 1933 manuscript diary handwritten by 20 year old already a 3 year veteran seaman! Gene Vernon Kellogg b.May 27 1914 Hansboro North Dakota SC1c V6 USNR 328 31 02 US Navy who was part of the 59th US Navy Construction Battalion the famed Seabees. The diary and some of the ephemeral pieces provide a look at the young Gene who went from a Ship`s Cook Striker to promotion to Able Seaman 2nd Class to his discharge in 1935 and the balance of the papers begin with his heroic reenlistment soon after Pearl Harbor a mere few months after his marriage at age 28 he was trained to combat and construction and became one of the first enlisted men of the `Fighting Seabees`. Using a 5 year diary Kellogg identifies himself and the ship on the fep and then dates the first entry 1933 with daily entries up to March 16th 1933 with a charming mix of the mundane ship duties and interesting personal entries regarding women he is seeing in San Diego hijinks like going off with a shipmate to buy something to make gin fizzy and a number of other interesting notes that sailors and naval men will appreciate. Besides a large number of addresses of women he writes to there are several pages of addresses presumably of his shipmates. The ephemera includes: July 4th 1934 ship menu for the USS Altair San Diego California; a statement of service dated 5/25/35 for USS Altair signed by B.H. Bieri commander of the US Navy; a one-sheet schedule dated May 14 1935 from the USS Altair signed by B.H. In total there are about 36 documents orders and other ephemera dated 1934 to 1945 in varying states of wear but overall G. ‎STEWARTSVILLE WYOMING WY. Good. 1926. On offer is an interesting 1926 manuscript relic of railroad history being a handwritten diary dated from July 6 1926 to November 14 1926 authored by a young man who is a fireman for the railroad who tells about his days working on the railroad and riding on the trains watching engines girls he meets accidents ballgames etc. The young Wyoming man Mr. Woods he identifies his father as Chas. Woods in the financials does a super job detailing his life and times. Here are some snippets: July 6 left Stewartsville for St. Joe to Cheyenne on St. Joe Grand Island Railway. Fare St. Joe to Cheyenne $22.97; July 8. Passed physical examination for fireman rec'd a pass to Laramie Wyo.; July 20. Given a job at watching engines. Keeping them full of water steam and . My shift 4pm to 12 midnight .41 cents per hr.; Aug 10. Went to circus and wild animal show in evening; Aug. 26. withdrew $10 from Albany National Bank. Dinner at Grand Caft. Super at kuster walked about town. Talked to some good looking girls but couldn't quite persuade them to go to show with us…. Guy came along in a car and they went car riding without us. Too bad guess we'll get a car.; Aug 27. Bought blue corduroy blazer $5.00. Saw out girls friends again but they dodged us and got away. Lots of work for nothing try again we'll show them.; Aug 29. Helms supply man went to sleep under coal chute. Woke him up with water hose. Good business today 16 road engines and 4 switch engines bus.; Sept 4. Mac Mclaughlin hostler on middle shift killed instantly about 3:15pm caught between two cars on coal track about 10 feet north of coal chutes. Talked with him about 5 minutes before the accident. Impossible to realise that it happened.; Sept 16. Left on engine 9010. Of 81 cars… had trouble with elvin stoker coal to coarse for crusher had to stop on the hill; Sept 26. Had trouble with fire tell we got to rock river… left rowlin… i had to call in the flag 5 or 6 times made about 50 to 55 miles per hour down the hill from lookout to Wyoming.; Oct 3. On engine 5055. Of 64 cars 2964 ton. Almost stalled out of ridge. I took the throttle for about 4 min. While Harris worked on sander pipes.; Oct 6. Left Laramie at 1 pm on engine 5077 with a Las Angeles train of 45 cars… went to the western and heard negro orchestra.; Oct 10. Saw the world series game between N.Y. Yanks & St. Louis Cardinals on the Republican Bermeraing's Playograph. St. Louis wins 3-2.; Oct 19. Saw 15 to 20 antelope southeast of track between Speer and Carr. There are 10 pages of receipts and expenses. The 6¾ x 8¼ inch diary is in a composition book which has 56 pages of entries sometimes just few lines but a lot of half page or more written daily. A chunk has been taken out of the top edgeaffexting the entire book but no loss of text. The writer details his life of shooting horse racing fishing luncheon engagements cricket rowing etc. once in a while he reads a book every day from January 1st 1876 to December 30th 1876. ‎near BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS MONTREAL QUEBEC CANADA. Poor. 1944. On offer is an amazing original 1944 manuscript diary handwritten by Robert Connelly a 21 year old man studying to be a priest. He is studying at a seminary near Boston Massachusetts and twice during the year he travels to La Grande Seminary in Montreal where he takes courses. Robert does an exceptional job using a 5 year diary for the one year only of writing almost every day and filling the pages up with his thoughts feelings and observations of the life of a young seminarian. Historians and researchers of the subject will be hard pressed to find a more detailed or intimate sharing of the inner thoughts and turmoil this young man experiences. A sensitive fellow he writes in the first entry: "This new diary is black by choice because the World is in a sad mournful state. Let us pray next year is the dawn of peace here". Here are some other snippets of this super memoir: "Fatigue and dreariness is slowly wearing on the fellows here. It is externally apparent. It is one of the trials for later life that the Seminary prepares us for". "Sulplician or the ___ Dietian knowledge is very poor. We had some chunk of battered beef today and not many fellows ate it. Result - we got it back for supper only it looked worse. The beans at dinner smelt like somebody "threw up". As Joachin says "double-eaten". "We got mush brown for supper again tonight and we are drawing near the end. I am trying to finish my review before that tense feeling sets in". "Bob D---- and Johnnie Gagnor our classmates from last year who had to be led to the decision with spiritual aid - that the priesthood is not for them. Bob left St Mary's Seminary last week. Visited us here today. We had a little party in B Poulins room last night. O My we broke the rules. Well God understands - even if the good Sulps don't". Fr Connelly wrote often about the War. He also wrote about Stalin and Communism and how necessary to was to pray for the conversion of Russia. I got the impression that he may have had some mixed feelings about not being in the army: "Read letter from Driscoll today. He told me to keep working hard because they know in the Armed Forces our grind is not so easy either". "The rumors about our being drafted are very numerous. The author wrote almost 3 pages describing a visit he and his Brothers made to St Jean de-Dieu a large asylum in Montreal. Following is a small part of what he wrote about patients he saw there: Aug 16. "We are going to take the trip to the St John Dieu -a 12000 inmate asylum for mental cases in Montreal. The nuns at this asylum like most other sisters are hardworking diligent little women unselfish and persevering in their work patience personified. Would that we clerics and religious Brothers could imitate them completely". Aug17. "Sick cases seen at St J 1. Women's Ward - One case was screaming terribly and would soon be shifted. The nuns had both tubs with cold water for those who were depressed and hot for those who were too wild. 2. The imbecile on the Piazza standing scratched her ___ then laid down head rolling from side to side blank expression on face". He goes on to describe several other of the patients he saw along with the mentally retarded children. The author included in the diary many stories told to him by other brothers and priests. Two of these: "This particular call happened to a Springfield Priest: A victim of a bus accident was taken to the hospital dead. Crushed to nothing arms broke off etc. The priest arrived at the hospital quickly after receiving an urgent telephone call. He was shown the victim and prepared to give him the last sacraments. The victim was placed in a basket which held all the broken members of his body. An orderly of the hospital was standing nearby. The priest motioned to him "Come here and give me a hand will you" The fellow came over and picked an arm of the victim out of the basket!!!" "Berstain was speaking of a former priest - a friend of his who used to be very chaste and solid in priestly countenance. But since he was a good mixer with youth he used to give rides in his auto - girls and boys. But then his love fell on one of the girls in particular - not spiritual but sentimental love of heart. Eventually he was driving her home from her war job in the factory and would stay there about an hour. Sometimes he went to see her in the morning after Mass!!! There is much more to this diary. The author reflected on Catholic doctrine - birth control pre-marital sex celibacy and more. He also wrote of mixed marriage the negro problem education duties of a priest. He noted the election of Cardinal Cushing and wrote of Bishop Sheen. The author was a very thoughtful and perceptive young man. His personal reflections on people and situations he encountered are throughout the diary. When he traveled he noted his thoughts about the scenes he saw and people he observed in the diary: "One girl got on the bus - was married - husband in the S. Pacific. Was the type who made a good housewife. Seemed to know the bus driver and his wife good". "The drunken Indiana farmer who got on - looked like he used to be a hardworking humble man. He laughed at his own jokes. "Pretty good heh Hah hah". "Some Jehovah's or Salvationists were preaching in the park. Would that we Catholics had their courage. The preachers spoke of belief in Christ.Soldiers stood at attention while two girls and fellows just kept making passes at each other". He wrote of his family and of a brother who was in the army. There is a letter in the diary from his mother who wrote news about "Bill" who was a pilot that had been shot down. It sounded as though Bill was a brother or very close relative. The diary measures about 6"X4 1/2" and is in very rough shape. The covers are detached the spine covering is gone. Pages are about to separate. Written in ink his handwriting at times is difficult to read especially names. Included with the diary are the letter a religious card a receipt from Greyhound and a receipt from Northeast Airlines all from the 1940s. On offer is a sensational unique original relic of the US Army Air Corp's efforts in the Amazon region of Brazil compiled and maintained Lieutenant R.W. Palmer as identified on the spine of book which is embossed with United States Army logo and reads: Amazon Diary Lt. R.W. Palmer. This massive 10" x 12 1/4" x 2" scrapbook has 105 pages on thick construction like paper and makes for a personal photographic diary of his tour of duty in the Amazon. Photos depict everyday life of the airman and his comrades locals natives people in villages buildings aircraft etc. etc. The photographs range from 5" x 7" and 8" x 10" all black and white save for one color photograph which is dated 1945. On offer is a super original early Pennsylvania land survey dated September/October 1803 "FIELD NOTES of tracts of Land situated the Waters of Tunk Hannack and Lackawanna Resurveyed in September and October 1803 for Samuel Morideth Esquire by Joseph Biles." The notes are neatly handwritten in brown ink cursive and quite legible. "Level land soil good Timb Beech and Sugar maple mixed with some Hemlock…" He begins with lot 22. Some of the approximately 44 pages have outside page edges uneven-cut. Paper is faintly lined. Pages not bound with the exception of the last couple bound with threads. Each page is about 6 1/4 x 4 inches. Pages are darkened with age pale tan or lightly yellowed stray marks specks throughout but legible. Back page soiled with some math problems scribbles. Some dog ear corners some notches or missing bits of paper. On offer are a super pair 2 of 1809 manuscript cypher/mathematics books handwritten by David Wiley who casual research finds was a farmer and veteran of the War of 1812. It appears that David was born in Hopewell Pennsylvania and later of Harford Maryland near Baltimore. Book 1 measuring 13" x 8" has a marbled softcover which is lightly worn and contains about 70 pages that are all written in a nice but sometimes uneven calligraphic hand. Book 2 has about 59 pages last 2-3 pages show 1812 trade transactions using his learned skills covers absent and slightly small than Book 1 as such. Equations include: apothecary weights avoirdupois weights troy weights promiscuous questions addition of federal money vulgar fractions interest insurance commission and brokerage compound interest barter fellowship foreign exchange Both books have faults: staining chipping some page losses but hardly any loss of text. ‎1942 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND TRAVEL LOG OF AN UNKNOWN SOLDIER ON HIS WAY TO FREETOWN ON THE WEST COAST OF AFRICA‎

‎ABOARD THE AMERICA SUN. Good. 1942. On offer is a very interesting original manuscript relic of World War II being a handwritten diary for the 'Second Foreign Voyage of The America Sun' dated September 1942 - January 23 1943. The American Sun was a custom tanker built by the Sun Oil Company in Chester PA. The Sun Oil Company was the single largest shipyard in the country. The America Sun was renamed America Son in 1966. The ship was scrapped in 1968. Some days the notations were simply about the weather and condition of the seas loading and unloading cargo and reports of subs providing an interesting account of what perils this unidentified serviceman faced on a daily basis. It begins on Sept. 26 1942 "Laying in Sun Ship for repairs" and ends on Jan. 23 1943 although the year is incorrectly entered as 1942 "Sighted Navy blimp and planes 7:30 A.M Arrived in New York 10:30 A.M." Here are some snippets: Sept 30 1942: Left Delaware River Breakwater 7:30 AM. Sailing for Curacao an island of the West Indies belonging to the Dutch. Passed convoy with a Navy blimp overhead. Oct. 2 1942: A wiper is going nuts - a special watch put over him. Rough seas. Oct. 4 1942: Planes have been with us till nightfall. Sighted Island 11:30 AM passing them all afternoon. A plane reported a sub somewhere around. Our guns were loaded. Oct 6 1942 - 2-3AM: U.S. Army bomber dropped a flare above us to identify us. Good thing no subs were around. We were a perfect target. Sighted Curacao 6:15 AM. Arrived at 10 AM. Oct. 9 1942: Left dock 9 AM heading out to sea for Freetown West Africa by ourselves. In the S. Atlantic gunners on watch said a torpedo missed our stern. Oct. 18 1942: Smoke sighted on the horizon. Proved to be a British gun boat which was hunting for us to escort us into Freetown - Plenty of subs reported in vicinity. Our speed cut now to 11 knots. Oct. 20 1942: Sighted a destroyer at dawn also a freighter in the afternoon. Our escort signalled us to speed up it had picked up a sub astern us. But the heinie was smart he went all the way to the bottom I guess. Oct 24 1942: Left Freetown 4 PM heading back to Curacao. Two ships the Esso Manhattan and a Limey transport and two escorts. Oct 29 1942: Night is like day with a big moon shining bright. Nov. 5 1942: Sighted a neutral ship at 4 AM 4:30 AM another ship was attacked by a sub ahead. These waters are really hot. Sighted islands 6 AM. Arrived in Curacao at 3 PM. Nov. 7 1942: In a convoy of 5 ships out of Curacao before we got in only one got through. The subs also got the U. S. Navy Gunboat Erie. It was brought in Curacao but capsized there. 2 PM Sailed from Curacao again for Freetown. What a life. Nov. 8 1942: On our own again zig-zagging slowly. Saw a life raft about 1 mile off. Looked like a couple of men on it. But we have orders not to stop for anything. It might be a trap. Nov. 18 1942: Sighted top of a wheel house floating by at 715 AM. Arrived at Freetown 330 PM Really African weather. This heat will kill you. This place is known as a white mans grave yard. We are now taking quinine for malaria here. Nov. 28 1942: Ship was shelled 24 hours ahead of us. We sure are getting by. Seems like we are missing everything. Dec. 11 1942: Rough and cool weather. Sub thought to be chasing us. Dec. 25 1942: Christmas in Africa. We had our turkeys. Discharging into a Norwegian ship stationed here. Jan 7 1943: Finished loading. Underway at 11 AM. Headed for Panama on our own. There was rumors we were going back to New York. All the crew would just love that. They've been grumbling and growling for the last month wondering when the hell they were getting back." Entries were made almost daily with a total of 26 pages of entries. The diary has a bit of edge wear to the cover and the pages are yellowed. ‎HANOVER NEW HAMPSHIRE NH ST. LOUIS MISSOURI MO. Fair. 1843. On offer is an original manuscript diary dated 1843 and 1849 handwritten by an unidentified man attending Dartmouth College in the 1843 part which covers 26 pages wherein we find he is married appears to be a Divinity student describes his lessons and waxes philosophical regarding the plight of man and how he longs for letters from home. He also notes attending Church in the home of Reverend Cutter. Later in 1849 he writes 13 pages of entries from St. Louis Missouri where he is apparently teaching at a boys' school. On Oct. 15th he writes: "Today is a great day for St. Louis. The National Railroad Convention met here today to deliberate on the momentous subject on constructing a railroad to the Pacific Ocean." The beautiful old book with leather spine and marbled boards some scuffing on corners and edges and there is some brittleness with the initial text block pulled away from the spine. ‎MANILA PHILIPPINES CAMP BEALE USA. Good. 1945. On offer is a super original World War II manuscript diary handwritten by 22 year old PFC David J. Doran Hq. Co. 3rd Battalion 341st Infantry APO #450. The page a day diary has extensive handwritten entries from July 24th 1945 through April 20th 1946 the day he returns home 271 days worth. In his own hand David states: "To Readers This is a fellow's life in his last year in Army and his return to civilian life. D. J. D." Private First Class Doran does a superlative job detailing his life during the exciting 9 months that are spent in his last days in the service. He begins on his way to Camp Beale in California and then even though the war is pronounced over he and the rest of his battalion head to the Philippines and spend a good deal of time there before heading home. On the cover of his diary and then also on one of the pages in the back he has listed his itinerary. He also wrote while on board the ships going to and coming home from the Philippines. One of the most amazing entries and there are quite a number of them is regarding the Manila massacre which happened in February of 1945 and David who is there on October 13th of 1945 writes a vivid and sad description. While in the Philippines he gets Amoebic Dysentery quite badly and spends a good deal of time in the hospital trying to get rid of it. Here are some snippets: 1945 "July 24th Today is the last full day of my 30 day furlough since I just returned from Europe. We spent 5 months overseas from Rhine to Austria. I'm in the 86th Inf. Div. I saw some of the gang today and said goodbye to them. Went over to the Iheta House in afternoon to see Mary my fiancée. It's sure going to be awful to leave her but I'm anxious to get back and finish it up for good in the Japanese war. ‎WILMORE KANSAS KS. Good. 1930. On offer is a fascinating original archive of 60 original romantic manuscript letters remarkably addressed to George Redfield of Wilmore Kansas during the 1930s. Uniquely George received letters from at least 5 different girls and while this might classify him as a western lothario sadly it looks like he never married though many were interested. One of his most fervent correspondents was Clyda Wheeler of Coldwater Kansas. Clyda and George have a very interesting on and off relationship. Clyda eventually married Charles Biddle Gregg of Coldwater on October 3rd 1936. In one letter Clyda is very upset and tells him off. She says in part: "Dear Geo. I'm sorry I have to start this letter this way but I'm kinda disgusted with you…" Her next letter after this one is a little over a month after and she apologizes for it. The earliest letter is June 3rd 1930 and the last letter is December 1st 1936. Here are some snippets: "June 3rd 1930 Dear Friend I hardly know what to write. We got her yesterday morning St. Louis and I have been on the go ever since. I just got back from Forest Park a little while ago….Auntie is asleep and Minnie the darkie is getting supper. Aunt Alice is upstairs; don't know what for and Curt and my uncle are not here. Well I'll have to close for now. Your best friend Elizabeth Nevens. On offer is an original manuscript relic of one American soldier's experience serving as a member of the 868th Bomb Squadron "H" squadron order #7 APO 717A from January 1st 1944 writing 133 full pages and then ending on Thanksgiving Day 1944. Handwritten by S/Sgt John Purvis b. July 10th 1921 from Detroit Michigan who fills the 'My Life In The Service' diary with everything from the mundane like playing craps negotiating for gin dealing with native headman for a bow and arrow movies drinking parties - including an occasion when the Captain came to his shack for some 'research' and the also writes of raids and bombings from the Japs planes coming back from missions with no brakes no landing gear and crashing troops crossing a coral reef only to end up dead including a friend who was close to leaving for home some committed suicide by shooting himself in the head and much much more. He was in Munda at the time of the the Battle of Munda Point. Overall this is a super look at the life of a non-commissioned officer dealing with everything from the enemy to the natives and to his own officers both good and bad. Condition: VG. She goes on to describe how Lottie came to be made queen a fantastic description of the afternoon of fights and she goes a lot of detail about the town and its people. She notes without emotion that in fact 5 or 6 bulls were killed. We read that she sits with Judges and Generals and even lunches with the Governor in his palace the day after the bullfight. ‎BOSTON TO CHICAGO TO WASHINGTON DC. Good. 1895. On offer is a fascinating part journal and part scrapbook of a 3000 mile trip written and compiled by Benjamin W. Parker for his wife in 1895. Invited to accompany a friend on an extensive business trip Parker his wife and mother travel mostly by train starting in Boston to Chicago and the mid west and through to Washington DC. Parker creates what iss meant to be a memory album for his wife to cherish in future years. Typed on onion skin tipped in with ephemera throughout the depth and breadth of the journal is wonderful providing a lovely perspective of America through this interesting man's eyes. There are personal anecdotes and we learn that Parker was a unique individual and highlights of the journal include a story of how he got kicked out of Naval Academy for pulling the coattails of President Grant on a dare. Ephemera tipped in includes a handwritten invitation by Senator William Frye of Maine to Charles Hamlin Asst Secretary of the Treasury on Senate stationary. Hamlin later became the first Chairman of the Federal Reserve and Frye was elected to replace James Blaine as Senator from Maine. On offer is a sensational pair 2 of manuscript diaries handwritten by Paul Jones 25 November 1880 - 4 September 1941 who was at one time the controversial Episcopal Bishop of Utah 1916-1918. The two diaries relate to Bishop Jones' 1938 trip to pre World War II Europe wherein the activist-Bishop made copious notes of his political meetings that ran the gamut of high profile politicians at the time and provide a sensational take from Jones' perspective on the threatening conflict. Traveling throughout Europe Jones details his thoughts and opinions and observations country by country in an old black 3 ring binder 6" x 8" containing 119 pages dated 1938: about Nazis brown shirts the third Reich Hitler Mein Kampf national socialism in Germany ship travel pacifism peace leaders the Salvation Army religion politics Chamberlain England the Labor Party Ghandi India the league of nations fascism political refugees like the Jews fleeing Germany the Holy Land lectures by notable people attended by Jones Marxism Russia dictators etc. The second book 4 x 7 inches 90 pages is dated September 1st 1938 through to June 28th 1941 and details his travels meetings contacts associations finances etc. in America after his return from Europe. The two books make for an unparalleled look into the life and thoughts of this famous and to some infamous pacifist and religious leader. BIO NOTES: one online source provides: Paul Jones 25 November 1880 - 4 September 1941 was the Episcopal Bishop of Utah 1916-1918 after the death of his predecessor Franklin Spencer Spalding a socialist and a prominent pacifist. He was forced to resign his see in April 1918 because of his outspoken opposition to World War I. Although in 1929 he was chosen as temporary bishop of Southern Ohio while the next incumbent was being selected he never again held a permanent diocese. In 1933 presiding bishop James DeWolf Perry restored Jones's seat but not his vote in the House of Bishops. Paul Jones was born in Pennsylvania in 1880. He attended Yale University and the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge Massachusetts. He was ordained and served a mission church in Logan Utah. In 1914 he was made Bishop of the Missionary District of Utah. He was an outspoken pacifist and when World War I began in 1914 he spoke against it. As the war progressed and when the United States entered the war in 1917 many Americans were vehement in holding that pursuing the war was a moral duty and opposition to the war was immoral. In the spring of 1918 yielding to pressure Bishop Jones resigned as Bishop of Utah. He continued to speak out within the Church as an advocate of peace and the Christian renunciation of war until his death on 4 September 1941. 2. History of St. John's Episcopal Church Logan Utah: Jones spent the rest of his life advocating for black civil rights social reform and economic justice. He served as a chaplain at Antioch College and was instrumental in founding the Fellowship of Reconciliation and the Episcopal Peace Fellowship. ‎PALESTINE EGYPT THE HOLYLAND PRE WAR ISRAEL. Good. 1941. On offer is an original absolutely fascinating 1941 - 1943 World War II manuscript diary handwritten by Mr. J.G. Manning the Australian YMCA representative in Palestine. The YMCA was dedicated to providing the armed services with many services critical to moral to soldiers throughout the world. Manning writes over 200 pages of entries starting 25th November 1941 in Palestine going to Egypt then Libya back to Palestine then to Sydney and Brisbane then to New Guinea and ending on 10 March 1943. Besides the fact that Manning's perspective of the War as an Australian representative of the YMCA is in itself unique what makes this diary so uncommon in our experience is the fact that Manning's diary is a history of his war experience observations and thoughts within a religious confessional on the paper upon which he writes. Every day he writes a prayer every day he cries out to his Creator every day he prays for hope health safety and strength and a hundred other things. He constantly uses the word 'surrendered' as he surrenders himself to his duty to God and he surrenders himself to his way of life he surrenders himself to his responsibilities. He constantly writes of his love and prayers for his wife and boys but a number of times he writes of surrendering himself to certain feelings. The mention of a number of men in his circle within the same entry leads us to believe that he was desperately trying to suppress homosexual feelings and in many ways was suppressing his feelings with his religious devotions. ‎SYRACUSE NEW YORK NY ONODOGA UTICA. Poor. 1923. On offer is an original and very interesting 1923 manuscript diary handwritten by we believe W.H. Herskovits there is an ex libris pastedown for Arthur Herskovits but hand-stamped W.H. Herskovits in a number of places including the front cover. The diary is in a 7 x 4 inch page a day book written fully but only for one month and a bit starting January 1st. Short as it is the diary page for page offers a fascinating character study of his personality in just 34 days. The reader learns that Mr. Herskovits appears to live in a fraternity house likely a Jewish Fraternity in Syracuse. He studies English has criminology classes but also Bible classes. Opinionated judgemental and a regular man about town who goes out constantly with his chums travels to other towns like Utica Onodoga and more. He dates quite often and even though it is the Prohibition Era he mentions 'imbibing slightly' quite a bit. Coming home at all hours of the night is not unusual at all. Here are some snippets: 'Spent New Years Eve with Gabby at Burlesque. Miserable show and met the common rabble. Imbibed slightly.' 'Had breakfast and on the way downtown Utica introduced to Mildred Rhyne a friend of "Vic's". Impressed deeply by her personality and general makeup.' 'Milton came in and had a tussle with him he threatened to move. Can't stand his trying to pull the wool over my eyes concerning everything he does. He lies miserably and continually.' On offer is a simply charming 1869 manuscript relic of a young girl's nautical life being a unique 184 page journal handwritten by 16 year old Edith or Edeth Harpour daughter of Captain John Harpour and at the beginning of the work we find them aboard the yacht "Astor". Edith proves to be a singularly unique diarist creating her autobiography in the form of a novel. She begins: "These "just fruits" at a late day are affectionately dedicated to a good papa by his daughter May 1869." Historians and collectors of personal narratives on life aboard ships will be hard pressed to find a more charming well written work. Here are some snippets: "How is her head Captain On hearing a voice a broad shouldered fine looking white haired gentleman stopped in his short walk turned round and faced a young girl who not with an assumed air of gravity had asked the above question. The "Captain" advancing a step or two passed his hand quietly through the brown curls of his daughter and gazing into her dark eyes said "If I informed my Eddie that "her head" was N.W. by W. or N.E. by E. how much wiser would she be But papa dear how are we getting along I don't like this perfectly quiet gliding! I wish a friendly breeze would come and give us a tossing! Then she added I don't think mama would relish it so much as I think and almost know I should. The lady spoken of mama smiled faintly a glance would show that she was an invalid. She sat or rather reclined on a heap of downy pillows a rich woollen wrap careful "fixed" about her the colors of which contrasted vividly with the pure delicate face and thin white hands that lay listlessly on the coverlid. Before describing any more of my dramatic person I must inform my reader that all of the hero's and heroines in this opening scene were enjoying a sea voyage on the fact and world renowned yacht Astor commanded and owned by Captain Harpour. The captain had seen service and for many years was the commander of one of the finest ships in the merchant service. His dream from a boy had been to cruise in a yacht of his own and having been a steady youth determined to get one. On offer is a superb manuscript relic of Victorian Era travel detailing a well documented trip by H R H Prince Edward and various dignitaries to India traveling by way of HMS Royal Yacht Serapis. The journal of the trip begins with the author we believe to be M. Harwell Royal Marine as was marked the chest from which this manuscript was rescued though we note a later childish hand circa 1900s wrote the name of Kenneth Ellicott among other scribbles and drawings a later relative we suspect being based on a hulk in Portsmouth awaiting the ship being prepared for the 9 month voyage. Researchers and historians of Victorian travel or the global politics and commerce behind this trip will relish the large folio sized 12½ x 8½ inch 86 well filled pages with super detail by this crew man giving good account of movements of crew HRH visitors deaths accidents in harbor receiving gifts such as ostriches. ‎LAWRENCEBURG TENNESSEE. Good. 1900. On offer is a super original archive of letters photos receipts and ledgers relating to breeding and training of the noted Tennessee Bird Dogs. Much of the archive is comprised of correspondence between the highly respected dog breeder trainer and handler David Dave E. Rose and the many clients whose dogs he trained as well as receipts and a red leather ledger showing the monetary exchanges between him and his clients. Rose also prepared and entered dogs into various competitive field trials and the archive includes letterhead from Hobart Ames developer of the Hobart Ames Plantation in Grand Junction TN the Continental Field Trial Club Manitoba Field Trials Club and the United States Field Trial Club. Included is the Tennessee History of Bird Dog Training including the book "Field Trial Records of Dogs in America 1874 Ð 1907 by Major J.M. Taylor" wherein David E. Rose is mentioned several times. Additionally included are six 6 stereoviews depicting dogs competing in the U. S. Field Trials three 3 of the stereoviews feature D. E. Rose the original archive collector. Most of the letters photos and receipts date from this paperwork from 1896 to around 1907. The collection comes directly Dave E. Rose who also ran a livery feed and sale stable business in Lawrenceburg Tennessee called Rose & Acklin. All of these items with the exception of the book are from his estate. The book is in fair condition some fading to cover and some staining. Most correspondence with folds wear and toning.
