‎1935 - 1937 SUPER GROUP OF FOUR 4 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HAND WRITTEN BY AN IRISH IMMIGRANT AND FAMILY DETAILING A LIFE OF INCREDIBLE LOWS AND HIGHS: A WIFE DEAD 2 YEARS 7 CHILDREN UNION AND LABOR STRIFE AND THEN A THUNDER BOLT OF A LOTTERY WIN‎

‎EAST HANOVER NJ 1935. On offer is a fascinating collection of journals from a family struggling through the Great Depression in pre-WWII America. It includes four journals for the years of 1935 1936 1937 and 1943 and a notebook all items are in fair condition. The Journals were written by William J. Timmons and members of his family. Timmons was born in 1889 in Navan Ireland. He emigrated to the United States in 1906. He married and he and his wife had 7 children - 5 girls and 2 boys. His wife passed away in 1933 apparently from injuries resulting from burns. Timmons worked in some manufacturing firms - in particular the Walter Kidde Company and context suggests that he also worked some land. Casual research has not turned up any additional information on him. The journals do not follow a strict chronological structure. Some in fact have entries made by some of his children or are written entirely by one of his daughters. The first journal was written in 1935 it measures 8.25'x6.75' and has 52 pages and is 50% complete. It is a composition book in which he appears to write out the drafts of letters he will then send out. One in particular details his personal and family history as he struggles to raise his 7 children on his own. Written to Rt Rev Monsignor Meehan possibly Rev Robert Meehan he details his difficult circumstances his personal history and his request for a job at the parish cemetery: ". I am working at present for the Walter Kidde fire extinguisher co in Bloomfield NJ. . I find it very difficult to continue sending them his 3 high school age daughters to Bayley High School with the money I make at present. I get 55¢ per hour for eight hours each day . I can't work seven days a week so I can make ends meet… My wife and children moved into East Hanover in 1925. My wife and I agreed to live in very humble living quarters so that we could afford to send our children through a Catholic High School. ." draft letter Oct 7 1935. Another letter is to Walter Kidde detailing improper activities at work including theft of metal and metal scrap. It appears that this was not his first communication and there was tension between himself and other men working in the shop: ". I am bewildered and timid in writing to you as Mr. Hiss has informed me that you do not wish to receive any more letters from me. He also told me that you turned over the last letter to him and that it was confidential between the three of us but it was known throughout the shop and for three weeks the men would not speak to me ." draft letter Oct 7 1935. Other entries detail what he sees as theft or misappropriation of company material. The second journal measures 9.5' x75' has 120 pages and 99% complete. It is written by one of his daughters. She never identifies herself. It opens with good news: "In the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and thirty six on the twenty seventh day of April God bestowed the blessings on Daddy of winning two thousand two hundred and eighty dollars $2280" Page 1. This is the equivalent of nearly 20 years wages for Timmons. Covering the time period from April 27 to July 23 1936 she keeps a record of family expenses and daily events: "Daddy went to Whippany to see about plowing and Charlie Beaumont about truck. Uncle Joe got from Dad $3.00" Jun4. 1933 The 3rd journal measures 95' x75' has 112 pages and is 99% complete. It covers the period June 15th 1936 to July 17 1937. Not all entries are in chronological order. This one appears to have been written by either a son or daughter. It is more likely a son as it refers to the writer working in a shop. Many of the entries describe day-to-day work tasks. He describes an accident he suffered from in which parts he was hand carrying exploded. He also talks about the manufacture of 15 navy shells. He also records conversations about attempts to unionize their shop: ". The men told Dad that Val Hill wanted the shop all one he wanted the union and they said it was Dad who was keeping it from being a union. Dad asked how many men worked there they said about 360. Dad said if 359 joined the union they would never get 360 to join. ." June 19 1937; "Dad had no money to get Bill clothes for graduation so he stood home from work. Cat daughter Catherine and I went to Uncle Joe's house but he was already at work and then we went to Sharkeys and Ruth told us she wouldn't have it. ." June 22 1937. This journal also includes some list of expenses and more importantly full names of people that the family knows. The 4th journal is written by Ann Timmons. It measures 85' x 675' has 50 pages and 78% complete it covers the period from March to October 1943. It begins with a letter dated Mar 17th to the Internal Revenue Service: "Gentlemen I cannot pay. Please grant me a month's grace to pay the balance $50.83 on my income tax. I am sorry to have this happen but faithfully promise to pay the rest on Apr 15th Mar 17. A number of pages appear to be a time record extending from April to Sept. In July she replies to a letter from her brother Bill who is serving in the United States army in North Africa likely as part of Operation Torch: ". I received your letter Saturday July 10 and am really proud of you. It sure gives me a proud feeling to get a letter from a brother of mine in Africa that can beat the h____ out of any enemies that gets in his way. But anyway I'd like to see anybody cross an Irishman and get away with it. ." July 11. On Oct 26 1943 she writes a letter in which she provides her brother Pat's address to a Pvt. Adams. Pat is already in uniform attached to the 92nd Field Artillery Battalion. Also in October she drafts a long 16 page letter to her brother Bill. The last volume is a top-bound writing notebook dated from 1937 it measures 975'x8' has 78 pages and 100% complete. This was written by William Timmons and goes into significant detail about the problems and in-fighting at the Walter Kidde Company where he was working. It is notable that although his full name is William Timmons as evidenced from previous letters he has written the men at work refer to him as 'Mike'. He refused to join a union which caused great animosity: ". He said - Boys when Floria and I go away you boys start to work on Mike Timmons and make him join the C.I.O. Union. . I said to them if the President of the United States asked me to join the C.I.O. Union I would refuse… Then the mob made all sorts of threatening and insulting remarks". This collection offers a fabulous insight into the day-to-day challenges of an ordinary working class man and his family. For a historian it is valuable from several perspectives. It describes the struggle of this man to raise his family on his own it describes industrial life on the shop floor and it provides an insight into the rough world of union organizing. What makes it special is the inclusion of entries and comments by at least two of his children who provide another perspective on life around them. Fair. Illus. by /. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. ‎Montgomery Alabama AL 1885. On offer is an interesting original nine page manuscript letter dated July 20th 1885 handwritten cotton seed oil tycoon and president of the Union Refining Co of Montgomery G.H. Dudley to D.J. Fallis of the Merchant National Bank Cincinnati Ohio. The letter reads much like a report to the 'head office' rather than a separate corporate entity implying the state of the cotton business in the South and the important role played by Northern and Eastern banks. We note that the corporate letterhead names a Jonathan T. Fallis as a Secretary of Union Refining Co of Montgomery and could not help wonder if there is a familial connection. The Carrington Family Diaries 1867 - 1913. All 59 diaries from members of the Carrington Family of Colebrook Connecticut. The patriarch Edward Sr. wife Sarah Ann Terry Carrington sons Edward C. Jr. died in the Civil War and Edwin T. and daughters Sarah and Kate. Edward Sr. died in 1878 and Sarah Ann Terry Carrington died in 1881. Both are buried in the Colebrook Center Cemetery in Colebrook Connecticut. Sarah Ann Terry Carrington mother was the daughter of Eliphalet Terry of New York. ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND: Lieut. Edward Carrington son was killed in the Civil War in St. Marks Florida in the Natural Bridge Conflict on March 6 1865 but the family did not get the news until March 22 1865. In 1871 the son Edwin was married to Charlotte nicknamed Lottie born April 9. 1847 and the couple moved to Scio NY. Edwin then moved to Bay City Michigan it appears in 1875. His wife and son Winny born in 1873 did not move with him to Michigan but rather stayed in Scio NY. Edwin traveled extensively on business by train and then in the later years by automobile and visited his family about every two months coupled with his business trips. Edwin was Secretary and Treasurer of the Bay City Building Company Rifle Room Company and Ausable Lumber Company in Michigan. Edwin and Lottie's son Winny died at the age of two years and eights months on 2/15/1876 and father did not make it home in time. A daughter Sarah was born in 1876; a son Eddy was born in 1877 and a daughter Gracie in 1882. Some of the earlier years have diaries from more than one member of the family. Edwin's diaries of 1875 - 1913 are both diaries as well as his business day planners. All have notations at the back of expenses and costs. As a hobby he enjoyed duck hunting. In 1901 Edwin and Lottie became grandparents by Sarah. The diaries mention both the deaths of Lincoln and McKinley. Several diaries have newspaper articles tucked at the back. One is an article about Mrs. Abraham Lincoln. There are two articles about how the Edward Carrington Sr. family made their "fortune" in 1874. ‎1920s - 1930s ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT NOTEBOOK OF VOICE AND VOCALS HAND WRITTEN BY A RENOWNED AMERICAN COMPOSER EDUCATOR AUTHOR AND THEORIST‎

‎U. S. 1925. On offer is an outstanding manuscript for a book on vocal pedagogy. The volume contains approximately 300 pages and is about 75% complete. It measures 8 inches by 5.5 inches. Although the cover shows some wear it is in fair condition and all pages are intact. The handwriting is legible. There are a number of loose pages inserted into the notebook Bainbridge Crist was a noted American composer conductor and educator. He was born in 1883 and died in 1969. He studied piano and flute. He earned a law degree from George Washington University However music and vocals were his great love and that is where his career took him. He went to Europe to complete his musical training. He studied under Paul Juon in Berlin and there is a reference to him attending lectures by the great Lilli Lehmann in Berlin in 1927. He taught singing in Boston 1915-21 and Washington D.C. 1922-23; returned to Europe 1923 and spent four years in Florence Paris Lucerne and Berlin; then settled in Washington D.C. Crist devoted much time to teaching. He was the author of The Art of Setting Words to Music N.Y. 1944 - in all some 186 works in 3 languages. The notebook is a manuscript for a book on vocal 'production' and relies heavily on studies of physiology and physics. Crist is clearly knowledgeable on the subject. He quotes some of the leading voice theorists of the time - Francesco Lamperti and Manuel Garcia. In fact the author has attached newspaper clipping from stories about each of these men's teachings. The manuscript is organized into 9 chapters: A Jaw B Lips C Tongue D Soft Palate E The Nasal Passage F The Vowels G The Diphthongs H The Consonants and I Combinations of Consonants p 43. This book is meant for teachers and very serious students of voice and voice production. The following is a passage on the topic of Consonants specifically the consonant 'M': "M is a voiced consonant. The rapid movement of the lower jaw should be no greater than is necessary to enable the lips comfortably to meet. The corners of the mouth and any portion of the tongue must be in the position of the vowel to follow; also the thyroid cartilage must hold the pitch height required of the vowel which it commences or terminates. When the articulation of M is completed the jaw must move rapidly down to the normal position which as I stated is uniform for all vowel sounds." pp. 129 131. The manuscript goes into great detail on the formation and projection of sounds. Crist refers at length to the aforementioned Lilli Lehman who had an international reputation as an opera singer. The International Mozarteum Foundation awards the Lilli Lehmann Medal annually. This is an excellent example of the science behind voice production as understood in the mid-20th century by a highly accomplished musician. Crist is at pains to provide an underlying theory to the methods that he advocates for voice and music teachers. Music teachers and music historians and vocal specialists would find it to be an outstanding resource for its actual content as well as a comparison to voice coaching methods today. These would be similar theories and methods as used by Lionel George Logue CVO who successfully treated King George VI for his stammer. ‎1805 LETTER FROM A RECENTLY RELOCATED LAWYER DETAILING HIS MOVE TO OHIO AND HIS THOUGHTS ON THE SORRY STATE OF LAW IN THE NEW STATE ALL TO GARRET WALL WHO WOULD EVENTUALLY BECOME A NEW JERSEY STATE ATTORNEY AND UNITED STATES SENATOR‎

‎CINCINNATI OHIO OH to TRENTON NEW JERSEY NJ 1805. On offer is a unique and gorgeously written letter from an lawyer by the name of Isaac G. Barnetwho has recently relocated to Cincinnati Ohio from England. He is writing to a friend Garret D. Wall in Trenton New Jersey. Garret Wall was at the time just a practicing attorney in New Jersey however he would go on to serve a long illustrious life first as a clerk for the New Jersey Supreme Court then as the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey then being elected a New Jersey Senator from 1835 to 1841 and finishing his life as a high court judge. In language that is often elegant and very obviously from an educated man the Mr. Barnet’s writes of many topics such as his recent departure from Trenton New Jersey to Cincinnati his new professional life in Cincinnati his old practice in Westminster in London England and the ease at which he finds that people can pass the Bar exam in his new home and the consequences this seems to have had. He begins the letter as such: “The most difficult part of a letter is said to be the beginning but I have found it the easiest in this instance having already begun without knowing how to continue the fact is I feel in but an indifferent mood this evening and you shall pay for it by being obliged to read what will neither be amusing enough to ____ a smile nor entertaining enough to please. This letter will give you no other pleasure than that which a sensible mind will always feel on hearing from an absent friend.” He continues apologizing for events that seem to have just transpired recently his relocating to Cincinnati from Trenton New Jersey: “I hope you are convinced before this that my abrupt departure from Trenton was not intentional that neither you nor Mr. Pemberton were selected as objects of neglect but that the _____ of my mind on the occasion will be a sufficient apology for any apparent neglect on my fact.” He also speaks of the timeless trope that continues to this day the observation that: “The sentiments of the people in general as in all other Democratic societies appear very much opposed to the lawyers.” He writes that this is even more so in his new home where seemingly anyone can pass the Bar exam and become a lawyer: “The facility of admission to the bar has introduced a norm of worthless and ignorant creatures into the profession who would sell an opinion for a grile of whiskey and require themselves for a pint.” Things in Cincinnati are different than in Westminster Mr. Barnet opines. Yet he writes “I have obtained more knowledge of the law since my short residence here than during all the rest of my studies - I have no other way to employ my time than in reading.” He finishes the letter with the usual pleasantries asking Mr. Wall to “remember me to the girls and to all my juvenile friends - I will conclude by giving you my sincere regards - Isaac G. Barnet.” The letter is four pages long consisting of two unbound sheets of paper. The pages are in fair to good condition showing a good deal of discoloration and repaired rips and tears. The letters must be handled with care. The handwriting is done in black ink which is still in good shape showing little fading or smudging. The entirety of the letter can be read easily and legibly. Background: Garret Dorset Wall March 10 1783 – November 22 1850 was a military officer and politician from New Jersey. Born in Middletown Township he completed preparatory studies studied law was licensed as an attorney in 1804 and as a counselor in 1807 and commenced practice in Burlington New Jersey. He served in the War of 1812 and commanded a volunteer regiment from Trenton. He was clerk of the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1812 to 1817 and was Quartermaster General of New Jersey from 1815 to 1837. He was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly in 1827 and was U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey in 1829; Wall was elected Governor of New Jersey in 1829 but declined to serve; he was then elected as a Jacksonian later a Democrat to the U.S. Senate and served from March 4 1835 to March 4 1841; he was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection. While in the Senate he was chairman of the Committee on the Militia Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth Congresses and a member of the Committees on the Judiciary Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses and Military Affairs Twenty-fifth Congress. From 1848 until his death Wall was a judge of the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals of New Jersey from 1848 until his death in Burlington in 1850. He was buried in Saint Mary's Episcopal Churchyard in Burlington. Garret D. Wall was the father of James Walter Wall also a U.S. Senator from New Jersey. Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. ‎1889 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM A RECENT TRANSPLANT TO SELMA ALABAMA A CIVIL ENGINEER AND SURVEYOR WHO DETAILS HIS NEW LIFE IN THE DEEP SOUTH AND THE KINDNESS OF HIS NEW NEIGHBORS‎

‎SELMA ALABAMA 1889. On offer are four lovely pages of heartfelt thank you from George H. Clark a recent transplant to the Selma Alabama area to Richard Smith a lawyer and friend dated January 15 1889. In gorgeous handwriting and flowery language Mr. Clark thanks Mr. Smith for “the generosity and heartyness of the assistance rendered me in my difficulties here” and for his “expressed sympathy for my ventures and belief in its success.” “There are already plenty of poor Engineers in the state” Mr. Clark states “and the success of a newcomer will depend on his living mark of a totally better character.” In his new position in Selma George talks about the kindness of his new neighbors “the business men of Selma have shown themselves exceedingly friendly and have given me valuable assistance.” his new surroundings “I have already gotten a Park to lay out with.Title to the property is not yet acquired but if negotiations succeed I shall go about it at once. and the politics of Selma “I am deeply interested in in the Northern misconceptions of Southern sentiment and Southern political method as far at least as its true purpose and results are concerning. Were I a resident here I could be nothing but a solid Southern Democrat as things now are. Finally he speaks to his friend of recent engineering news from back up north. He speaks of the contract of the “Buffalo and Williamsville R.R. is let to Pearson McIntyre and Company. So this is what our Cahaba Valley friends have been doing these past months.” The letter ends with pleasantries to Mr. Smith and his family “with most sincere thanks for your kindness in helping me at this time and for your hearty sympathy and confidence I am Yours Respectfully George H. Clark.” The letter is 4 pages long unbound but numbered at the top. It is written on stationery that reads “George H. Clark C.E. Civil Engineer and Surveyor” at the top and shows his office to at the “Baker Building Opposite Board of Trade Room Selma Alabama.” The handwriting is easy to read and legible throughout showing almost no fading. The pages themselves show very little wear from age or use especially on the written sides of the pages. Slight discoloration around the creases on the blank back of the pages. This is a unique and very interesting document and would make an excellent addition to rounding out a collection dealing with engineering and surveyor in the Deep South or the history of Selma Alabama.
