‎USA 1828. This is a small archive of original handwritten fragments from the pen of Levi Bartlett. Late 1700 early 1800 - 7 pieces of paper in Levi Bartlett 1763-1828 handwriting. Levi was the son of Josiah Bartlett best known as a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Not easy to read but still legible here are some excerpts: "Ord. 3. Performance of Your Duties.our duties arise from our relations 1. to the Diety 2. Ourselves." "Vertigo by too much nerves Dimness of Sight want of nerve Double Vision too much nerve ." "a. Our duties are 1. to assist the purposes of the Diety in evolving our and others mental powers." Very interesting and certainly worthy of further research. Includes an historical narrative and short biography of Levi Bartlett as well as photocopies of various letters or decrees in Levi’s hand. ‎1936 ORIGINAL DEPRESSION ERA MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A PASSIONATE YOUNG OKLAHOMA GIRL‎

‎BARTLESVILLE OKLAHOMA 1936. On offer is a charming original 1936 manuscript diary handwritten by a young woman named Mavis Bazel. The book is dated from January 1 1936 through June 15 1936 with approximately 190 detailed pages. We estimate Mavis is 15 or 16 years old and as is typical of teenagers she has many passions: Mavis is crazy about Nelson Eddy catching his show in Tulsa igniting a desire to take singing lessons which would cost $2 per month. Seeing in person "the Dixie Melody Masters" and rolled up the rug and danced; learning to ice skate for the first time she became obsessed with it; likes Duke a lot but he has bad complexion and need not see him anymore she does continue to see him then dumps him he falls for her girlfriend and she likes him again listened to many hockey games on station WVOO; intensely interested in local men and women's basketball games in surrounding towns of Norman Dewey Barnsdall Bristow Coffeyville Copan Tulsa Phillips Wann Collinsville Claremore. She's a regular girl without apparent physical or emotional ailments except for frequent colds. She enjoys going to the drugstore for sandwiches and hot chocolate plays the new game Monopoly on Feb. 14 1936 writes poetry and hopes to go to college preferring the school to be farther away from home. Mavis gets her hair cut/washed/set regularly and has a 10 year old sister Peggy. She gets a summer job and the diary ends on June 14 1936. Mavis makes noteworthy mentions of films an current events: Jan 17 1936 "Rudyard Kipling died this evening at 7" Jan 21 1936 "King George of England died - King Edward the 8th ascended throne" mentions "Bruno Richard Hauptmann the alleged kidnapper of the Lindburgh baby". Films/plays include Anne of Green Gables Becky Sharpe with Miriam Hopkins which Mavis comments on as being "terribly over-acted" Magnificent Obsession with Robert Taylor and Irene Dunn commented upon as "cool" and Small Town Girl with Robert Taylor and Janet Gaynor. The 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" book's front cover is loose but attached several pages ripped out towards the end of diary otherwise the contents look great and is overall G. Good. 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. ‎1865 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT MEDICAL RELATED CIVIL WAR LETTER BY FAMED SURGEON OF THE 39TH NEW YORK‎

‎New York 1st DIVISION HOSPITAL 1865. On offer is a significant lengthy 6 pp letter approx. 5" x 8" datelined 1st Div. Hospt. 2nd A.C. Thursday Afternoon June 15 1865" written by Dr. C.S. Hoyt an Army Surgeon to a former colleague. Interesting content written as the huge Union Army was being mustered out. Here are some snippets: "each day makes us smaller and beautifully less. The old Army of the Potomac is being rapidly yet quietly dispersed. All the troops whose terms of service expire prior to Oct. 1st are already mustered out. We are looking for new and more extended orders for muster out and I think within a short time the entire army will be discharged its services being no longer required. Today orders came transfering all the Heavy Art. Regts. to Hancock's Corps and they are to hold the Forts around here. These Regts. are now moving the 2nd & 4th NY Regts among the number. We still keep up the Div. Hospt.These changes are playing the deuce with rank tossing Surgeons around as if on 'billous waves'.Tompkins and Howe leave today and O'Meaghen and Rouland will take their places. I am the only Surgeon left in the 3rd Brigade. The medicine waggon has been turned over and the Regts 39th and 52nd report to the 4th Brigade. We will all be scattered to every point of the compass within the next 15 days whether to be mustered out or for other duty I am unable to conjecture. I am inclined to believe you will be able to marry before long for without doubt your Regt will go out soon unless new complications should arise in the affairs of the patients. On this question of marriage I have no settled policy only to 'wade in' at such time as it may be convenient and circumstances will allow. 'Old Isaac' is cooking for our mess at 20 dollars pr month. He is now preparing 'Fish Balls' for supper. He desires me to present his very best wishes and desires you to write him a reference to an act. he holds against Col. Hemick. By the way the 'Old Rat' is quite gay among the wenches here. I am satisfied he would eat 'cheese' if the rind were not too thick.You say truly we had pleasant association at the old Div. Hospt.; they will never be effaced from my memory. I have always been fortunate in my relations with those whom I have associated in the army.My associations with you have been longer and more intimate than with any others and your many acts of kindness places me under deep obligations to you. Surgeon HOYT - We notice in a recent number of Yates County Chronicle an account of the presentation of a beautiful gold watch to Surgeon Charles S. HOYT chief executive officer of the 1st. Div. hospital 2nd Corps by the attendants of the hospital as a mark of respect and a token of their appreciation of Surgeon HOYT as an officer and a gentleman. Surgeon HOYT entered the service in 1862 as 1st Assistant Surgeon of the 126th New York and has since endeared himself to that command by his constant and uniform attention to his duties. His pleasant manners and kind and cheerful words to the sick and wounded under his care and accompanying the warm and substantial arrangements for comfort and good nursing which he always in some almost mysterious way seemed to improvise wherever there was occasion have doubtless buoyed up many a desponding spirit to shake off the death grapple about to seize another victim to the late unholy rebellion. Dr. HOYT was promoted to surgeon of the 39th NY a little more than a year ago and has since been for most of the time chief executive officer of the 1st Division Hospital 2nd Corps which has been known as the model hospital in the army during all the terrible campaigns of 1864 and the eventful winter and spring of 1865. ‎1785. On offer is a fascinating group of 15 pages of notes on eight 8 leaves regarding a variety of astronomy subjects. Handwritten on watermarked laid paper by an unknown scrivener the papers suggest a date of circa 1780s mentioning the expected return of a comet in 1789 on one of the pages. Other dated material in the original archive confirm this. The beautifully written 8" X 10" double-sided astronomy topics include: Comets such as the Comet of 1105 1680 and Halley's Comet; Perihelion; Alhelion; The Planets Mercury mentions the heat the inhabitants must feel Venus Jupiter and Mars and The Moon. ‎Baltimore Maryland MD - at Sea Aboard the Charles 1843. On offer are two 2 super original manuscript relics of Christian outreach and missionary work handwritten by Reverend Walter Gunn one of the first missionaries to India addressed to Frederick Schott of Waterloo New York. Bio notes follow. The first is a one 1 page letter written by Gunn dated 1843 while in Baltimore. The second letter is written by Rev. Gunn while on the boat "The Charles" heading to India in 1844. He has been at sea for 138 days. This is a 3¼ page letter. Here are snippets: 1 "Baltimore May 24 1843 Dear Brother in the Lord I should like to write a long letter to you and enter into many particulars but I have but only a few moments to spare as Bro Selmser is soon to leave B. and I have a press of business on hand. Well how do you do. How is your family and how do your souls prosper. Is Christ precious are you actively engaged in his service. O my brother watch your heart your words and your actions and strive to live so that the flame of love may burn brightly in your heart to God. How pleasant it would be for me to enjoy the hospitalities of your table again to bow with you again around the family altar to walk to the house of God in company but instead of walking the street of Waterloo I shall soon be walking the deck of the vessel that bears me to the heathen land. But shall I ever forget you and the beloved brethren of W. No. Even now while going from house to house among the brethren in imagination the tears fall upon the paper and bedew these lines I write….Your brother in Christ Walter Gunn." 2 "Ship Charles Indian Ocean March 25th 1844 Dear Brother Shutt While penning these lines I am sailing up the Indian Ocean towards the shores of Hindustan. I have crossed the equator twice doubled the Cape of Good Hope and shall in a few weeks I trust reach my field of labor. But though I am separated from you by a distance of so many thousand miles I have not forgotten you no in imagination I often walk the streets of Waterloo visit the houses of the brethren and join in your acts of worship in the congregation. The different articles of apparel that I wear at this moment remind me of you and many others in W. While contemplating the interesting scenes that transpire in your place one year ago my eyes often fill with tears. Were not those precious and heavenly seasons when you and so many of your associates and friends took a stand on the Lord's side. Though I am now denied the privilege of witnessing such glorious displays of the power and grace of God in the conviction and conversion of sinners I do not on that account conclude that I am out of the path of duty. True it would be a pleasing task for the minister of Christ to be engaged daily in the work of directing the inquiring to the Savior and strengthening those who had just commenced running the Christian course. But that privilege at present is denied me. From no one for the last few months have I heard the inquiry "What must I do to be saved." Except the missionaries who are going with me to the heathen. I am surrounded by those who seem to think but little of their undying souls….You will undoubtedly wish to know how I feel now that I am so far away from kindred friends and natives land with but little prospect of ever seeing them again. To answer for the most part I feel cheerful contented and happy. Often have I seen the ocean all lashed into commotion the vessel at one moment raised upon the top of a mighty billow and the next plunged into the fearful chasm below; at such a moment it seemed as though we must all be engulfed beneath the troubled ocean but even then my mind has been calm and unruffled….Tell your sister Mrs. Bean that the pantaloons she made me became very spotted by the damp weather around the Cape of Good Hope but that the spots did not make them any the less comfortable. Pray for me and my companion that we may be preserved from the temptations to which we are exposed and that we may be the faithful servants of Christ among the heathen. Yours in the bonds of Christian love Walter Gunn. Near the shores of Burmah April 3rd 1844." BIO NOTES: "The Rev. W. Gunn. The Missionary was a graduate of Union College N.Y. in 1841; studied theology at Gettysburg; was ordained by the Hartwick Synod in 1843 at Johnstown; appointed missionary to India in the same year; arrived at Guntur on June 18th 1844 and was a faithful and an indefatigable colleague of the Rev. Mr. Heyer until 1851 when after a period of seven years service in the cause of Jesus he departed this life at Guntur esteemed and loved by all who knew him. He is spoken of as a good man full of zeal for the Lord so much so that on one occasion in the Guntur bazaar he became so indignant at some idolatrous performances of the heathen that he lifted up his voice in great earnest against the idolaters who became exasperated at him and consequently proceeded to pelt him with stones. But he prudently withdrew from the enraged rabble only to return on subsequent occasions to continue publishing the message of salvation to them. His remains rest in the Guntur Cemetery until the day of the resurrection. He died while in Guntur in 1851 from Tuberculosis." "Reverend Adam Long went to India almost immediately after being ordained. The Lutheran mission to India was still in its early phases when Long arrived it have been started in the Andhra region by Rev. John Christian Frederick Heyer in 1842 who at 48 and widowed was an anomaly compared to other missionaries. He was joined by the Rev. and Mrs. Water Gunn another Gettysburg College and Seminary graduate in 1844 and by Rev. George Martz in 1849. There these men and Gunn's wife Lorena began the task of educating and converting Indians. In a country that is dominated by the polytheistic Hinduism and Mohammedanism this was not an easy task. Traveling from village to village these men and women counted their accomplishments by the individuals that they could convert and the schools and churches that they built. . ‎ITALY BEHIND ENEMY LINES 1944. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of one soldier's battle experiences and analysis of World War II and his involvement in the Italian Campaign. Handwritten by Walter H. Himmelberger 33011020 uses a 5 x 6 inch handmade booklet of 104 fully written pages. Besides his narrative Walter included maps photos and clippings to add further depth. There is also a tipped in 'Orders of the Day' signed in print by H.R. Alexander. The diary begins February 27 1944 through April 13 1945 and even a casual read one observes that he is a keen observer and a very intelligent communicator. Here is a snippet from the beginning: Ì am continuing in this handmade notebook my written experiences overseas in World War II. As our battalion is now here in Naples Italy station in this newly built hotel but badly beaten from concusion sic as the right wing of the building had a direct hit from our bombers when the Germans had occupied it. Our job here is different from what it was in Tunis Africa. We are far behind enemy lines this time. Our ambulance evacuate patients from the hospital boats coming from the Anzio beachhead to the hospitals around this area. We are keep very busy." Much much more intimate details from his writings are expressed beside battle news but also his emotional state which appears fragile after 2 years or so. He turns 25 and spends no little space explaining his angst over the war and what it is doing to his and other soldier's long term health. Overall the book is G. ‎Unknown 1889. On offer is an interesting manuscript letter handwritten by George A. Henderson dated Saint John New Brunswick May 29 1889 regarding the Methodist Church's history in Saint John. He writes most likely to Francis Fidler of Philadelphia about the Centenary Methodist Church of Saint John completing its' 50th year of service. He says he was assigned the duty of writing about the Church since its' inception in 1839 but has decided to go back farther in time to the beginnings of Methodism in Saint John. He asks Mr. Fidler about his father who was also a Pastor if he kept a diary or any other correspondence which may have mentioned any St. John names. Mr. Henderson also writes that a great fire in 1877 destroyed almost all paper of value relating to his research and is reaching out for information to help him. It turns out Mr. Henderson was able to gather enough information to write Early St. John Methodism and History of the Centenary Methodist Church St. John N.B. This was a Jubilee souvenir. Jubilee was held for the 50 year anniversary of the Centenary Methodist Church. This was published by G.E. Day in 1890. Save for some general ageing and some splits to the fold the letter is G. ‎TROY NEW YORK NY 1795. On offer: handwritten manuscript/cypher calligraphic book written by a G. W. Campbell of Troy NY School No. 11. c1790s this book was used as a school book and covered many subjects but mostly math. Measuring 13" x 7.5" this softcover is lightly worn moreso to first and last leaf in obviousness from being used as covers with a few very minor tears some rounding first page 50% detached rest firmly bound by string; it contains many pages that are all written in beautiful calligraphy ink writing including two absolutely gorgeous folk art drawings in calligraphic detail. One of these drawings has the name 'G W Campbell Troy NY School No. 11' written at the base of it. There is an interesting math problem regarding how long the War between American and England lasted and there are mentions of dollars shillings and pence leading us to believe that this was a late 18th century cypher. It was also found within a large quantity of New York manuscripts and ledgers/cyphers from c1790s. The content is mostly of complex and vulgar mathematical tables and equations. 58 pages. Overall G. The original file folder contained a very old collection of foreign autographs and documents which indicates: "Spanish War - rare watermarks - unusually good." Documents relating to the 1808 - 1814 Spanish War or the Peninsula War as is called Spain's War of Independance are very very scarce. Four bold signatures and the fact that it is dated squarely at the beginning of the conflict make for a very interesting pair of documents that require further research. . Autograph. Manuscript. ‎1867 HANDWRITTEN CIVIL WAR ERA MANUSCRIPT LETTER REFERENCING THE CONFEDERACY RECONSTRUCTION STUMP SPEECHES‎

‎Spring Hill Navarro County Texas TX 1867. This is a great post Civil War letter to Capt Charles E. Culver who was on the Savannah during the Tybee Blockades and from John H. Lippert asking for help in his mission. It mentions him giving the captain an introduction to Governor Pease of Texas. It mentions Stump Speeches and helping the "Colored People". What is ironic is that Captain Culver does not want the Rebs or Rebels to get the upper hand yet he fought on the Confederate Side from what our research regarding him during the Civil War. It also mentions that he will help if he can get a guard to keep him from being assassinated! When he mentions the Heirarch Lyon he is evidently referring the Nathanial Lyon according to our research on this subject. Great Reconstruction content. Here are snippets; Spring Hill Navarro Co Oct 21st 1867 ’s HDQT. I will be able to set you all right unless you have done something of which I am not aware. In that case of course I would fail to do you any good if Judge Waters is a Loyal Man as he professes to be. It does appear to me that he could be of great service to you at this time by making Public Speeches and instructing the colored people for the Judge is well informed and has a fine education and can doubtless make a fine Stump Speech. So he should stand by you in your efforts to sustain the Loyal Men in your District which I have every reason to believe you have done to the best of your ability for which I as a Loyal Man tender you my Thanks and Cordial Support and Cooperation in any way possible. On offer is a super original and interesting glimpse into Baptist missionary work in India being manuscript history of the Bobbili Caste Girl's School in India from 1880-1938 handwritten by an unknown Baptist missionary. "Trouble came when a rival school was started by the Maharajah. The superior inducements which he held out such as presents of gold money etc. made it impossible to maintain the former attendance." "In 1904 it was decided that the Bobbili School should be recognized as the "Central Girls School for the Maritime Missions". Dates to 1938: "The boarding apartment starting with one waif has grown until this year 1938 125 have been in attendance - the full capacity." omplete in six numbered leaves each measuring 8 x 5 inches difficult to read the last line of page one thereafter no problem. HISTORICAL NOTES: From the Dictionary of Canadian Biography: "Matilda Moore Faulkner Churchill schoolteacher Baptist missionary and author; b. October or November 1840 in Stewiacke Nova Scotia daughter of William Faulkner an engineer and Nancy Woodworth; m. 16 Sept. 1873 the Reverend George Churchill a Baptist minister in Truro Nova Scotia and they had two sons and two daughters of whom one daughter survived to adulthood; d. 12 Aug. 1924 in Toronto. Matilda Faulkner was born and raised in Stewiacke. In her teens her family moved to Truro where she attended the Model and Normal schools obtaining a first-class teacher's licence in 1861. At first she taught primary and intermediate classes in Merigomish and at the Model School in Truro; later she moved to the senior department of the Model School as one of the first Normal School-trained high-school teachers. She also volunteered among the poor establishing church services and a night school for the black Baptist population of Truro. At the same time she harboured a desire to be an overseas missionary which she later declared had been instilled in her at the age of 14 after a series of "wonderful meetings" in Stewiacke during which she and members of her family had been baptized. At first her attempts to serve as a foreign missionary were discouraged since she was a single woman. An opportunity arose in 1871 however when George Churchill whom she had met as a student in Truro asked her to be his wife and accompany him to do missionary work in Asia. After studies at the Woman's Medical College in Philadelphia she was married and in October 1873 she and her husband joined a group of missionaries - known as the "serving seven" see Mary E. Lamont - who had been appointed by the Baptist Foreign Mission Board to go to Burma where Hannah Maria Norris was already labouring and Siam. There were difficulties with the southeast Asian location however and at the 1875 meeting of the Baptist Convention of Nova Scotia New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island a new field was chosen. It was the Telugu country on the western shore of the Bay of Bengal. This decision marked the beginning of Maritime Baptist involvement in India which has continued to the present. The Churchills served first at Cocanada Kakinada and Bimlipatam before establishing their own mission station at Bobbili in 1879. Encountering numerous challenges such as the heat language and cultural barriers primitive living conditions and the difficult caste system Matilda and her husband nonetheless persevered. In 1875 she described villages of mud huts mainly pariah settlements where the women she sought to teach were "filthy and ragged their hair matted and so forlorn and despairing looking; not pleasant to labour with nor are their children." Generally the women missionaries worked with women and children establishing schools and promoting literacy while the men worked with the men training some as native preachers. One of Matilda's accomplishments was founding and managing a "Caste Girls' School" in a new building in Bobbili in 1880 which taught mostly Brahman girls. She had previously run a similar establishment in rented premises in Bimlipatam. Matilda served as a missionary in India from 1875 to 1921 except for brief periods when she returned to Canada or made trips abroad. During her years there she lost three children and in 1908 her husband. She nevertheless carried on until February 1921 when she went to Toronto to live with her daughter Elizabeth Maud Stillwell who had also served as a missionary in India. She died there in 1924 at the age of 83 years 10 months and was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. One obituary observed that she was "a woman of sound judgment intense spirituality and possessed a most winning personality which qualities made her an outstanding figure in the missionary personnel of her day." Dated July 9 1840 Lafayette Indiana and sent to his wife Clarissa Steele in New Albany Indiana. In this letter he describes his stage coach journey from New Albany via Terre Haute - having just arrived in Lafayette. The Bishop of their church is also in Lafayette on a trip and soon heading to Chicago. Ashbel is contemplating a trip to the Chicago area to visit relatives. On offer is an interesting manuscript relic of World War I being a handwritten analysis of the noted and notorious 1914 Battle of Le Cateau by Lieutenant Colonel Hardress Waller of Forcett Hall Richmond North Yorkshire. Waller was particularly interested in military history and his 12 folio sized pages of notes on the history of this WWI battle of Le Cateau offers an intimate perspective and the setup of the analysis suggest this was for a publication or formal report. Intriguingly the sheets are on Royal embossed letter sheets adding credence that this may have been prepared as a formal report. ‎1944 ARCHIVE OF TWO 2 HANDWRITTEN SHIP'S LOG OF THE USS WORTHINGTON IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC BATTLING JAPAN‎

‎1944. On offer are two 2 original authentic World War II ship combat log books from the USS WORTHINGTON PC-1137. Included are a small number of ephemera pieces; a Fuel and Water Report dated 28 September 1944 indicating the number of gallons of Fuel and Water taken on a chart indicating the speed of the ship based on the engines RPM's and Liberty Rosters with the names of the ship's crew and the names of those on duty watch. These are fastened inside one of the logs and some are torn and creased. The logs are dated from 18 May 1944 - 30 September 1944 and 1 October 1944 - 19 November 1944. Both books have seen better days as they have broken bindings stained cloth covers a torn back page but all entries are legible. Entries include the ship's location General Quarters when the Captain had the Conn when the ship was zig-zagging inventories itemizing food re-supply RADAR contacts ships escorted names of anyone that came aboard including War Correspondents when rounds were fired the names of those brought onboard for medical treatment when waves departed to hit the beaches all the islands they were near list by name and the weapons and ammunition they departed the ship with flares and gun fire seen from the ship and even a Captain's Mast held on STM 1/C Walter THOMPSON 6374406 who was placed on report and charged with refusal to wash Officer's personal clothes. He was awarded 100 hours of extra duty to be worked out on deck and much much more. Here are some details of the USS WORTHINGTON PC-1137: was a patrol craft in the United States Navy. PC-1137 was laid down on 29 December 1942 at the Defoe shipbuilding company in Bay City Michigan launched on 29 March 1943; towed down the Mississippi river to New Orleans for outfitting and acceptance trials; and commissioned there on 23 October 1943 with Lieutenant George D. Lewis USNR in command. After shakedown training out of the Submarine Chaser Training Center at Miami Florida PC-1137 headed for the southwestern Pacific late in November. She transited the Panama Canal on 5 and 6 December 1943 and arrived at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands on 18 February 1944. Assigned to Task Group TG 35.6 the ship spent the next five months escorting convoys among various American bases in the southwestern Pacific and conducting anti-submarine patrols from bases throughout the Solomons chain. On 26 July 1944 she concluded that duty and began training to prepare for the invasion of the Western Carolines. Those preparations lasted until 4 September 1944 at which time she departed Guadalcanal in the screen for LST Flotilla 13 bound for the Palaus. During the initial assault on Peleliu between 14 and 16 September 1944 she served as forward control and reference ship for the landings on Orange Beach 3. On the 16th she completed that assignment and began screening the operational area against Japanese submarine attack. She remained occupied in this task until 15 November 1944 when she received orders assigning her to TG 96.3 at Eniwetok Atoll and signaling a return to convoy escort duty. Between 23 November 1944 and 3 March 1945 PC-1137 traveled the circuit between Eniwetok Ulithi Guam and Saipan screening supply and reinforcement convoys. On 4 March 1945 PC-1137 set a course for Pearl Harbor. She arrived at Oahu on 13 March 1945 and began a seven-week repair period during which she was converted to a combat communications control ship. She completed repairs and conversion near the end of the first week in May 1945 and then spent the following week in amphibious training exercises at Maui. On 21 May 1945 PC-1137 put to sea with LST Flotilla 35 en route to the Mariana Islands. She arrived at Saipan on 10 June 1945 and reported for duty as a convoy escort. For the remainder of the war she made the convoy run between the Marianas and Okinawa in support of the final campaign of World War II and conducted anti-submarine patrols out of Apra Harbor Guam. On 20 August 1945 five days after the cessation of hostilities she was officially reclassified a combat communications control ship PCC-1137. After a repair period in late August and early September the ship departed Guam on 20 September 1945 bound for Japan and duty in the occupation forces there. She arrived in Tokyo Bay on 25 September 1945 and joined TG 53.4. The submarine chaser operated in Japanese waters with the occupation forces until the beginning of 1946. After several months service in the Central Pacific notably at Truk Eniwetok and Guam she departed Eniwetok to return to the United States. The ship made a six-day stopover at Pearl Harbor and then continued on to the west coast arriving in Astoria Oregon on 27 May 1946. She began the inactivation process immediately and was decommissioned on 10 August 1946. Berthed with the Columbia River Group Pacific Reserve Group PCC-1137 lay idle during the remaining 12 years and six months of her Navy career. On 15 February 1956 she received the name Worthington one she wore for only three years. On 29 May 1959 her name was struck from the Navy list; and later she was sold for scrapping. On offer is a super original manuscript letter dated 1893 Calcutta 12/12 India to Aunt Luella wherein her unidentified nephew writes of other missionaries and relations between Christians and Muslims. Here is a snippet: "I went a day or two ago to call on a Mohammedan friend whose husband has been very sick. Speaking of his sickness and how near God had been to him he said we have a saying that when in trouble we call on God. He says Do not call so loud my child I am near you. It is not you who are seeking me but I am seeking you. He is a devout man I believe I think a conscientious man as far as he knows and realizes. I came up to C to meet a group of new missionaries whom we rather expected on the 27th but we hear now they will not be here until the 30th or perhaps the 31st. Had I know this I would not have come so soon but would have stayed to help him …So I haunt the New Market a delightful place where the following articles can be obtained in abundance: Hats of straw books flowers plants ribbons…." Interestingly he notes his parents have left on travels allowing him some freedom. The top third of the note has separated from the body and is somewhat fragile otherwise. Overall Fair. ‎Shustoke Warwickshire England 1892. On offer is a super original 19th Century manuscript travel diary in a premium leather bound notebook of about 200 pages of lined paper. Signed and dated 1892 by Henry A. Whitehead on the first page. Research suggests Whitehead was vicar of the village in the mid nineteenth century. The journey starts from Shustoke in Warwickshire via Birmingham to Liverpool where the author with his companion McWilliams boards his first boat The Mareotis at Huskisson Dock bound for Gibraltar Tangiers Algeria Malta Alexandria Ramleh Cairo Aden Zanzibar Mozambique Durban and beyond. This is a very languid look at the life and experiences of a leisured Victorian tourist in North Africa who receives invitations to Governor's parties meets and calls on Colonels and Majors with important jobs who knows the HMS Thunderer and HMS Camperdown when he sees them in harbour visiting the 'Armoury' mentions making many sketches interesting commentary regarding other passenger particulary the German officers after Cairo interesting copy of a King Neptune broadside a guest of the Consul time spent with Churchill and much much more. Whitehead arrived back in England in September the last few months of the diary being devoted to his daily home life. Only the last six pages of the notebook are unused. Covers rubbed at edges. Spine splitting. Internally fine. These daily entries vary in length from just a few lines to several pages and run from January 29th to 31st December of the same year. Overall G. Autograph. Deliberated in Paris in 1603 the document ends with three affixed signatures of the members of a council formed in June of 1577. The document states the problems between various individuals and the resultant end with the status of revenues and properties. This document is written in middle-French that lists names of various noble families. Much is left unsaid but given the use of the language and mention of nobility this may possibility be an establishment of estates or other revenues.
