Handsome copy despite a small hole not touching the text at the level of the interior fold of the newspaper. Le Chat noir is a weekly magazine created by Rodolphe Salis and Emile Goudeau published from 1882 to 1897 with the aim of promoting the famous cabaret of the same name of which it served as the memory. The texts recited during the shows were published there. Contemporary full marbled sheep binding. Smooth spine decorated. Brown morocco title label; black morocco volume label. Lacks to all headcaps. Upper joint of volume 1 cracked at head lower joint with crack at foot. Upper joint of volume 3 cracked at head for 12 cm. Upper joint of volume 4 cracked at foot for 8 cm. Swiss author born in Lausanne the author devoted himself to a literary career after leaving the army he made his name from 1783 with 3 sentimental and epistolary novels then in vogue which we find in Baculard d'Arnaud and whose origin goes back to Richardson. His 3 novels enjoyed a certain renown in France and in Switzerland. Camille is a novel where psychological analysis plays a major role we see the romantic journey of two friends who are complete opposites one is thoughtful and reasoning melancholic the other prides herself on simplicity and gaiety and sees no interest in reflection. The most loving will not be the one we think. The work is interesting not only because we follow the character of two young girls and their sentimental adventures but because it exposes the condition and life of educated young girls at the end of the 18th century. Half-shagreen binding in fawn smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons. Each volume is illustrated with more than 600 wood-engraved figures in black and white within the text. First edition. Copy from the André Vasseur collection bearing his bookplate in each volume as well as a sheet of manuscript bibliographical notes pasted into the first volume. Spine headcaps and corners rubbed small holes at foot of spine scattered foxing and fold marks on some pages otherwise good condition for this rare complete collection abundantly illustrated. Bearing the subtitle ""Livre de tout le monde et de tous les pays"" this encyclopedic review gathered articles corresponding to sections such as ""Monuments de France"" ""Monuments étrangers"" ""Histoire"" ""Histoire naturelle"" ""Biographie"" ""Vues"" ""Sciences Arts Industrie"" ""Peinture Gravure Statuaire"" ""Religions Moeurs et Usages"" or ""Géographie Voyages."". It was published in weekly fascicles from 1834 to 1836 when publication very likely ceased since the end of volume 3 bears the mention ""Fin du troisième et dernier volume"". Some rubbing to spine and headcaps gilding partially faded front board joint cracked at head rear board joint cracked at foot corners rubbed some scattered foxing otherwise handsome interior condition for this rare example of a general review from the early 19th century. Contributions by Emile Deschamps Alexandre Dumas Théophile Gautier Emile de Girardin Léon Gozlan Eugène Guinot Arsène Houssaye Jules Janin Lamartine Alfred de Musset Stendhal Eugène Sue among others. Appearing every five days the review was interested in literature as well as science fine arts and social customs. It published mainly historical chronicles travel and society pieces about France or foreign countries stories and novellas as well as sections devoted to theater fashion court news and current events most often reprinted from other newspapers of the time.
