Alain-Rene LESAGE
Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane
à Paris: Chez la veuve Ribou 1732. Fine. Chez la veuve Ribou à Paris 1732 - 1735 9 x 16.80 cm 4 volumes reliés Fourth edition statement for volumes 1 to 3 and first edition of the fourth volume which appeared for the first time in 1735 published by Pierre-Jacques Ribou. The first 2 volumes were initially published in 1715. Editions of Gil Blas are rare before 1750. The edition is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait and 26 unsigned figures 8 in volume 1 10 in volume 2 and 8 in volume 3 there are none in volume 4 in its first edition. Contemporary full glazed and speckled brown sheep binding. Spine with raised bands richly decorated. Red morocco title labels brown morocco volume labels. Headcaps of volumes II and III worn revealing the headbands. pp. 163 to 168 in volume IV 3 brown spots in outer margin. Signs of rubbing. Some corners slightly bumped. It is now perfectly established that one cannot accuse Lesage's immortal masterpiece of plagiarism the last baroque flame of the picaresque novel; if Lesage drew his material from elsewhere it remains nonetheless that Gil Blas is an original and personal work. We find the misadventures of a picaro as roguish as possible who through his multiple encounters creates a satirical portrait of contemporary society. Two influences mark the novel's inspiration: the picaresque inspiration that Lesage diverts since his hero will succeed in climbing the social ladder and ancient inspiration whose division into 12 books recalls that of the Aeneid. The work would occupy the author for 20 years. ""In writing Gil Blas in endowing his work with the qualities that assured it extensive and lasting success Lesage was therefore on one hand the heir of Mateo Alemán of Cervantes of Espinel of Quevedo and through them of Apuleius; but on the other hand he preserved the flexibility I dare say the 'polyvalence' indispensable to an art form that would be illustrated by the Balzac of the Human Comedy the Stendhal of the Charterhouse of Parma the Thackeray of Vanity Fair and Zola and Tolstoy and many others after them."" Manuscrit autographe signé complet du discours prononcé le 22 février 1952 à la salle Wagram en faveur des condamnés à mort espagnols
s. l. Paris 1952. Fine. s. l. Paris 22 février 1952 21 x 27 cm 3 pages sur 3 feuillets Autograph manuscript signed written in blue ink on three sheets of white paper; numerous deletions and corrections. ""Si quelque part au monde le coeur de la liberté continue à battre s'il est un lieu d'où ses coups nous parviennent mieux frappés que de partout ailleurs nous savons tous que ce lieu est l'Espagne."" ""If anywhere in the world the heart of freedom continues to beat if there is a place from which its beats reach us more clearly struck than from anywhere else we all know that this place is Spain."" This magnificent text was delivered by André Breton on February 22 1952 during the meeting organized by the League of Human Rights at Salle Wagram. The speech was later published in Le Libertaire of March 6 1952. ""Let us not forget that the monster that still holds us at its mercy for a time sharpened its claws in Spain. It is there that it began to make its poisons seep: lies division demoralization disappearance where for the first time it made its thickets of rifles gleam in the early morning its torture chambers at nightfall. The Hitlers the Mussolinis the Stalins had their vivisection laboratory there their school of practical work. The crematory ovens the salt mines the slippery stairs of the N.K.V.D. the endless extension of the concentration camp world were approved from there. It is from Spain that flows the indelible dripping of blood testifying to a wound that may be mortal for the world. It is in Spain that for the first time in everyone's eyes the right to live free was struck down."" ""Breton could not remain indifferent to international events. In Spain Franco's regime maintains itself through police repression but it cannot prevent a succession of important strikes led by anarchist organizations that remain vigorous. In March eleven leaders are sentenced to death. A campaign alerting European public opinion is launched in their favor. Breton speaks at the meeting organized at Salle Wagram on February 22 1952. Citing the Barcelona strikes launched on a supposed watchword of the Falange he prophesies a total victory in time. The mood of the clandestine leaders announces revolt against economic misery against fascism a three-headed monster that first tried its claws in Spain."" Henri Béhar André Breton unknown

Charles PALISSOT DE MONTENOY
Oeuvres
à Paris: Imprimerie de Monsieur Didot jeune 1788. Fine. Imprimerie de Monsieur Didot jeune à Paris 1788 14.50 x 22.70 cm 4 volumes reliés Statement of new edition considerably expanded. It is illustrated with a portrait by Monet as frontispiece to volume I and with 18 figures by Meon and Monnet engraved by Thérèse Martinet. Volume 1 6 figures including the portrait and 5 frontispieces for the theatrical pieces. In volume 2 13 figures 3 for the theatrical pieces as frontispieces and 10 for each canto of La Dunciade. Edition beautifully produced by Didot on Holland paper. Contemporary full marbled brown calf binding probably Directoire period. Spine with raised bands decorated with 4 different tools including an urn tool the tools within decorated compartments. Roll tooling at head and tail. Red morocco title label with roll tooling red morocco volume label with black pastille mosaic and gilt circle. Triple thick gilt fillet border. Marbled edges. 5 corners bumped 3 of them on volume 2. Some lacks to edges. Very handsome set with remarkably fresh paper apart from some rare foxing on verso of engravings or pale marks in margins of certain engravings. Although one could not honestly qualify Palissot's literary production as important he was undoubtedly a major figure in the literary life of his era; thus the various pieces notes remarks letters that frame each comedy the edition is very rich in this respect are remarkable regarding literary life in the second half of the 18th century notably concerning the famous quarrel of the philosophers which Palissot initiated attacking them outrageously in his eponymous play undoubtedly poorly conceived from a dramaturgical point of view but excellent in its writing each mockery hitting its mark. Besides the theater and the poem La Dunciade the volumes contain the Mémoires littéraires dictionary of literary figures correspondence with Voltaire he was his protégé at the beginning of his career critiques by his contemporaries Freron Piron Duclos. One will discover with pleasure the critiques by his contemporaries of his own plays. Palissot was undoubtedly a social climber with incredible talent for polemic and mockery and equally for flattery; this edition of his works retains the greatest interest for the world of Letters in the second part of the 18th century. A small pinhole at the head of the photograph showing all the affection that Carlo Rim had for his venerable friend Tristan Bernard having certainly hung this postcard in his home. The postcard shows Tristan Bernard facing forward with his handsome and imposing beard. On the verso he added: ""Le monsieur du verso c'est évident c'est sûr. c'est le plus beau vieillard de la Côte d'Azur. Je vous embrasse bien affectueusement chère Alice et cher Carlo. Tristan Bernard."" ""The gentleman on the back it's obvious it's certain. he's the most handsome old man on the Côte d'Azur. I embrace you both very affectionately dear Alice and dear Carlo. Tristan Bernard."" During the Occupation Tristan Bernard took refuge in Cannes and resided at the Hotel Windsor while his friend Carlo Rim offered in vain for him to stay at his home so that he would be safe from denunciation or arrest; to which Tristan Bernard never short of witticisms replied: ""At my age one no longer sleeps away from home!"" adding: ""Do you know that I appear in the Petit Larousse They don't arrest someone who appears in the Petit Larousse."" He was nevertheless arrested in September 1943 as a Jew and interned with his wife at Drancy then released through the intervention of Sacha Guitry and Arletty the following month. His grandson François-René was also arrested as a Resistance member and deported to Mauthausen where he died. unknown

Gasparem Colignio Gallia Amiralium. John Calvins Lectures on the First Twenty-One Chapters of the Prophet Ezekiel taken down by Jean Budé and Charles de Jonville with a Preface by Théodore de Bèze to Gaspard de Coligny Admiral of France
Genevae Genève Geneva: Ex officina Francisci Perrini 1565. Fine. Ex officina Francisci Perrini Genevae Genève Geneva 1565 12 x 19.50 cm relié CALVIN Jean & BèZE Théodore de Ioannis Caluini in viginti prima Ezechielis Prophetae capita Praelectiones Ioannis Budaei & Caroli Ionuillaei labore & industria exceptae. Com Praefatione Theodori Bazae ad generosis. Gasparem Colignio Gallia Amiralium. Ex officina Francisci Perrini Genevae Geneva 1565 in-8 12 x 195 cm 10 f. 412 ff 20 f. Sig: 10 a-z8 A-Z8 Aa-Hh8 mid-19th-century half morocco The very rare posthumous first edition first printing known as type a with all the typographical characteristics capitals in the fifth line of the title in Roman letter ii instead of ij and identical initials on ii and p.1. This edition contains a preface by Théodore de Bèze Calvin's successor in the form of an exhortation to the head of the Protestants in France Admiral Gaspard de Coligny. Another edition by the same printer appeared a few months later in French translation. Thirty-four lines per page woodcut initials printer's device. Mid-19th century half navy blue morocco by Galette spine in six compartments with richly decorated frames marbled pastedowns and endpapers all edges red. Two corners slightly rubbed small repair to upper inside margin of title a few leaves repaired in margins occasional marginal dampstaining. Contemporary inscription to title. Calvin began his lessons on Ezekiel on the 20th January 1562. Very soon however his state of health compelled him to call upon Théodore de Bèze's help. In a letter to the Daniel family François Perrot notes this double teaching: Our good tutor and common father has got into the habit of commenting on Ezekiel still in hand which is to say on the first three days every second week this year while our Théodore in his turn is commenting on the Catechism in Greek the first three days of the week.Because of his illness Calvin can often hardly finish his bit. Calvin interrupted his unfinished lessons once and for all on the 2nd February 1564. These lessons on the first twenty chapters of the revelations of the Prophet Ezekiel are the last preached by Calvin before his death on the 27th May 1564. Like the previous lessons these too were collected in Latin by Jean Budé and Calvin's secretary Charles de Jonviller who on the 9th October 1564 asked the Council for permission to have printed the lessons of Monseigneur Calvin on the first 20 chapters of Ezekiel reviewed by the deceased. Agreed that he has permission for as many as Monseigneur de Bèze has witnessed. In his dedicatory epistle to Admiral de Coligny de Bèze who succeeded Calvin to the Chair of Theology at the Academy pays elegant homage to his friend and spiritual guide: In him we find the only person in our time who has left behind so many works which contain so whole and so pure a doctrine. But that it had pleased God to leave us the benefit of this shining light for another year or two; it seems to me in truth that one could not demand a more perfect knowledge of the Old and New Testaments. His death of which he was forewarned prevented his finishing Ezekiel which is all the greater a loss to the Church since he was the most obscure of the Prophets as we know.and who knows when we will find someone to complete this painting begun by our Apelles. Only 16 copies in various libraries of the first printing cf. Bibliotheca Calviniana. A handsome and very rare copy of the first printing with good margins. Ex officina Francisci Perrini unknown
