A CORRESPONDENCE consisting of 14 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED by SCOTTISH OPERATIC SOPRANO MARY GARDEN addressed to her friend Carl Van Vechten's lover Donald Angus.
Various cities throughout America and Scotland 1931 through 1950. 1931. 1931. Very good. - An archive consisting of 14 autograph letters signed by the Scottish Soprano Mary Garden who was often described as "the Sarah Bernhart of Opera" to her New York City friend Donald Angus. A 6-3/4 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide letter dated December 21 1931 is penned on 2 sides of a folded sheet of San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel stationery. In this boldly penned letter Mary Garden acknowledges receiving her friend's letter and promises to sign a photo with pleasure. Signed in full "Mary Garden".<p>On January 19 1933 the Soprano writes on two sides of folded Hotel Washington D.C. stationery thanking her friend for his "kind good wishes" and responds with her own good wishes for the new year and expresses her hopes that she'll see him when she sings at the Capital on January 27th. Signed "Mary Garden". Together with the original envelope addressed "For Donald Angus c/o Carl Van Vechten".</p><p>She writes from Chicago on December 13 1935 on 2 sides of folded "The Blackstone" hotel stationery thanking her friend for sending her a book and lets him know that she'll be at the Essex House for a few days. Signed "Mary Garden".</p><p>On March 1st 1936 Mary Garden writes on 2 sides of folded New York "Essex House" stationery thanking Donald Angus for his birthday wishes. She further encourages him to phone her soon about "the John Golden theatre. I am interested". Signed in full.</p><p>In a March 17 1944 4-page autograph letter penned on 2 sheets of 7-7/8 inch high by 5 inch wide "Tor-na-coille Hotel Banchory Kincardineshire" blue stationery she thanks Donald Angus for his birthday wishes "I love to get a thought from time to time from my American admirers. They are always so loyal to me in my Operatic work." "I should have spent the evening with you Carl and Vergil sic Thomson." and reminisces about a delightful evening in Paris "with Thomson in his cozy little flat" and recalls such foods that "he alone knew where to get in all corners of Paris! - He is now a critic! Well he will have fun making the mediocre tremble!" She mentions just finishing a book "written by a woman who places herself in the category of singer who never was a singer; and calls her book 'Always Room at the Top' a place which she never reached - So how can anyone write about something they know nothing about - it's a mystery to me!" Signed in full "Mary Garden". The book of memoirs to which she refers was by Polish opera singer Ganna Walska.</p><p>On January 1st 1945 Mary Garden pens a few words on both sides of a 3-5/8 inch high by 4-1/2 card thanking Donald Angus for his cabled Christmas greetings and explains that she is sending this card in the care of their mutual friend Eddie Waterman as she has lost his address. Signed in full.</p><p>In a 3-1/2 page letter penned on September 18 1945 from her home in Aberdeen Mary Garden writes on three 7-1/4 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide sheets of light blue paper thanking Donald Angus for his "charming letter". "Life is very dull - now the war is over." she writes "and I believe it will be a hard Winter." She does not know when she'll be "coming back to the USA. I think it best to wait a little longer until the world is more settled." She mentions that she often hears from their mutual friend Eddie Waterman who is likely "thinking of going back to Paris to see what condition his loverly things are in." Signed in full.</p><p>In a 4-page letter from Aberdeen dated June 19th 1946 penned on four sheets of 8 inch high by 5 inch wide light blue paper Mary Garden writes that now that "Eddie" is in Paris he can't pass along messages for her. "So you are the next friend I come to." she writes and asks if he could place an order for her with Mrs. Grasso who sells beauty products at the Essex House. Signed in full.</p><p>In a 2-page letter dated December 15 1946 penned from Aberdeen on both sides of a 7 inch high by 5-3/8 inch wide sheet of creamy white paper Mary Garden mentions that she "will be coming over next year to see you all." and expresses her best wishes for the forthcoming Holiday season. Signed "Mary Garden".</p><p>Writing from Aberdeen on February 20 1947 on both sides of a 7 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide sheet of light blue paper Mary Garden regretfully states that she "will not be coming to the U.S.A. this year - at least I don't think so." Signed in full.</p><p>In a 2-page letter from Aberdeen dated January 19 1948 penned on both sides of a 9 inch high by 7 inch wide sheet of light blue paper Mary Garden asks if Donald Angus could "do something for me" The soprano would like to respond to a card which Erick Huneker the son of James Huneker the music critic "who wrote such wonderful things about my work". He wrote to her but she does not have his address and asks if Donald Angus might look it up in his local NYC phone book for her: "A thousand thanks for your attention in doing this for me". Signed in full.</p><p>On March 27 1949 Mary Garden writes a note on both sides of a 3-1/2 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide card as a note of introduction to her friend James Reid who will be moving from Aberdeen to the US to teach singing: "if you can be of service to Mr. Reid I shall deeply appreciate it". Signed "Mary Garden".</p><p>On October 20th 1949 Mary Garden has penned a 7-3/4 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide letter on three sides of a folded sheet of "Hotel Pierre New York" stationery. Mary Garden is terribly upset that she didn't meet Donald Angus for lunch: "I was so horrified when I got your letter that I am not over it! I never knew I was to lunch with you - I wouldn't have done that to you forgotten." she continues: "our last visit was so short & in such a hurry that if you invited me for lunch I did not put it in my book - so never remembered." She goes on to hope that she can make it up to him before she leaves. Signed in full.</p><p>In a 7 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide letter from Aberdeen penned on April 2 1950 on two sides of a folded sheet of light blue paper Mary Garden writes: "Here I am at last back in my lovely home in Aberdeen - My sister has arranged the whole thing for me - it is devine! sic Very tiny but Oh! so comfortable but it's my first real home." She concludes "I send you very best wishes et mon sic meilleur souvenirs". Signed in full "Mary Garden".</p><p>The letters are folded for mailing and in otherwise very good to fine condition all with their original mailing envelopes. </p><p>Scottish soprano Mary Garden 1874-1967 moved to Chicago with her family when she was 9 years old. Studying in Paris she made her debut on the stage of the Opera-Comique in the title role of Gustave Charpentier's "Louise" April 1900. Within 2 years the composer Claude Debussy chose her to play the female lead in the debut of his "Pelleas et Melisande" a role she sang to great critical acclaim. She went on to cause a sensation in the role of Salome performing herself the dance of the seven veils which other great Divas had previously left to professional dancers. Returning to America she first performed at the Manhattan Opera House in the title role of Thais 1907 a role she later played in the silent film shot in 1917. She went on to star in the productions of the Chicago Civic Opera from 1910 through 1931 and eventually wrested control of the Chicago Opera from the hands of her rivals. Her sensational performances were matched by her flamboyant personal life which was the source of many scandalous rumours.</p><p>The recipient Donald Angus born circa 1902 an actor and New York interior decorator was an avid 19 year old lover of opera when he met the author and famous celebrity photographer Carl Van Vechten in 1919. The two began a long-lasting relationship and regularly attended art events and frequented parties and nightclubs in Harlem. Even after their sexual relationship had cooled off Angus remained a close friend of Van Vechten's and his wife.</p><p>Edward Wassermann changed his name to Waterman in 1942. He wrote an account of his friendship with Anatole France when he Wassermann was a young American: "Anatole France vu par un American" 1930.</p> Various cities throughout America and Scotland, 1931 through 1950. AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED by the OPERATIC SOPRANO EMMA JUCH with an additional AUTOGRAPH signed and dated by her.
New York June 30th 1886. 1886. Good. - Seventeen words penned on the lower half of 6 inch high by 4-1/8 inch wide cream paper: "Such persuasive 'autograph friends' are certainly hard to resist - so I send you the signature with pleasure". Signed "Emma Juch". Across the top of the page is this second autograph likely that to which she refers as it boldly fills the width of the page and is dated by her beneath the signature: "Emma Juch / New York June 30th 1886". Folded for mailing with offsetting to the corners. Likely once mounted in an album a paper tab is affixed to the lower edge of the verso. <p>The Operatic soprano Emma Juch 1861-1939 Emma Antonia Juch Wellman was born in Vienna and raised in New York City. Emma Juch took singing lessons and practiced secretly as her father did not approve. It wasn't until he first heard her sing on stage that he had a change of heart. Her debut came as Philine in an Italian version of Ambroise Thomas' "Mignon" at 18 years of age and she was immediately hired to sing for the season at Her Majesty's Theatre in London. She made her American debut at NYC's Academy of Music in 1881 and in 1886 was the first singer contracted by the American Opera Company. Soon after that company folded she formed the Emma Juch Company. The company opened with "Faust" at the Grand Opera House in Los Angeles in 1890 and went on to tour the US and Mexico. Her singing career spanned but a mere 13 years as she retired after marrying the New York lawyer Francis L. Wellman in 1894. New York June 30th, 1886. unknown

Elle y a chanté le rôle d'Agathe, dans La Juive, devant le « fils héritier de l'Empereur de Russie », ce qui lui valut un beau cadeau le lendemain, un bracelet. Elle annonce aussi qu'elle sera à Paris en novembre et espère qu'Escudier la recommandera. On joint un portrait gravé, issu d'un livre. [250]
