February 27 1888. 1888. Good. - sc - 25 words penned on 6-1/8 inch high by 4 inch wide light blue-gray paper. Writing to a Mr. Johnson Mary Davies apolozies that she can only send him one ticket: "I have promised the other to another friend." Signed "Mary Davies". Mary Davies has dated and penned an annotation "P.S. Tickets have not arrived yet" on the verso of an attached integral leaf. Folded for mailing. The close and Mary Davies' signature are very slightly smudged. There are remnants of gray scrapbook paper along the right edge of the attached leaf which barely touches the postscript. Good. <p>Born in Africa of Egyptian parents the Welsh mezzo-soprano Mary Davies 1855-1930 was co-founder and first president of the Welsh Folk Song Society. A student of Edith Wynne she won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music where she studied with Alberto Randegger. She made her debut in 1873 and in 1880 sang in England's first complete performance of Berlioz's "La Damnation de Faust". She was the principal vocalist at the London Ballad Concerts and at the National Eisteddfod of 1906. February 27, 1888. unknown

Kensington March 15 1895. 1895. Good. - sc - 2 pages 7 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide. 40 words penned on facing sides of a folded sheet. Writing to a Mrs. Jackson who has apparently submitted the draft of an article to her Mary Davies states that "you have made a delightful 'chat'." and that she has "only ventured to excise one paragraph." She goes on to tell Mrs. Jackson that she had written to the editor of Cassell's Saturday Journal and that she should hear from him that very day. Signed and dated on the second page. Folded for mailing. The letter was apparently once tipped into a book or scrapbook and there is a strip of tape along the right edge of the second page with does not affect the text. Elina Barthélémy dite Mademoiselle Elian (1819-?), soprano, chanteuse, fille du poète Auguste-Marseille Barthélémy, créatrice du rôle d'Inès dans La Favorite de Donizetti. L.A.S., 1er janvier 1836, 1p in-8. A un de ses professeurs. Elle lui envoie ses voeux et un livre de son père pour lui « donner quelques instants de distractions ». Elian eut trois professeurs au Conservatoire : François-Louis Henry, Laurent-Joseph Morin et Adolphe Nourrit. Après des prix en 1837 et 1838, Elian débute à Paris en 1836, créa quelques petites rôles puis, après 1842, se produisit en province (Bordeaux, Rouen). On la retrouve à Bruxelles en 1848 puis on perd sa trace. Félix Deriège nous donne probablement la raison de cette courte carrière parisienne: « Mademoiselle Élian Barthélemy a le malheur de n'être pas jolie, de grimacer quand elle chante, et d'éprouver souvent de ces embarras de larynx que les artistes ont nommés des chats » (Physiologie du lion.
