Facendo ampio riferimento a fonti e documenti inediti o sconosciuti ai precedenti studiosi, Krin Gabbard sottopone il mito autobiografico a un attento lavoro di verifica. Dopo aver illustrato gli eventi artistici e biografici più importanti, Gabbard dedica infatti un approfondito esame a Mingus come scrittore e come compositore-musicista. Si domanda perché abbia dedicato così tanto spazio nella sua vita all'auto-analisi e ne racconta la lotta per sentire riconosciuta la propria complessa identità razziale in una società da cui era identificato semplicemente come "nero"; illustra inoltre quanto i problemi di salute fisica e mentale abbiano influito sugli alti e bassi della sua carriera musicale. Nato alla fine degli anni Ottanta in Inghilterra, I'acid jazz si è velocemente imposto a livello internazionale tra il 1987 e il 1995, non solo come genere musicale di grande successo ma anche come fenomeno culturale. La sua originalità consiste nella straordinaria sintesi di tanti microgeneri sperimentali e generi più consolidati come il jazz, il funk, il latin, il rock, I'hip hop. Nei primi anni Novanta i due dj produttori Gilles Peterson ed Eddie Piller saranno i principali promotori del genere attraverso le radio, le serate dj nei principali club londinesi e la loro stessa casa discografica Acid Jazz Records (l'etichetta diverrà presto famosa per le compilation Totally Wired, in cui veniva illustrato e lanciato il nuovo genere). È lo stesso Gilles Peterson, dj radiofonico e animatore del club Dingwalls a Londra, a coniare il termine acid jazz con una frase rimasta mitica: "Finora avete ballato acid house? E adesso ascoltate acid jazz!", ripetuta durante le serate musicali in cui proponeva l'ascolto di vinili ispirati alle contaminazioni tra funk, jazz, soul e rare-groove. II libro ripercorre otto anni di storia musicale legata al ballo e al "dancefloor jazz" e prende in considerazione anche aspetti vicini all'arte grafica e alla moda (o ai trend pubblicitari).
