‎----------------- Stéphane Grappelli (* 26. Januar 1908 in Paris; gest. 1. Dezember 1997 in Paris) war ein französischer Jazz-Violinist. Grappelli brachte sich als Jugendlicher selbst das Violin- und Klavierspiel bei und bestand, ohne jemals einen Lehrer gehabt zu haben, die Aufnahmeprüfung für die Pariser Musikhochschule. Hier studierte er zwischen 1924 und 1928. Während dieser Zeit und noch nach seinem Studium verdingte er sich als Musiker in Kinos und in Tanzbands, bis er 1933 Django Reinhardt traf. Grappelli gründete gemeinsam mit Reinhardt das Quintette du Hot Club de France, sie nahmen gemeinsam zahlreiche Schallplatten bis 1939 auf und feierten Konzerterfolge. Als am 1. September 1939 der Zweite Weltkrieg ausbrach, befand sich die Band auf Konzerttournee in London. Reinhardt ging gleich nach Paris zurück, doch Grappelli blieb in England. In England gründete Grappelli eine neue Band mit dem jungen Pianisten George Shearing. Mit Reinhardt arbeitete er erst nach dem Krieg wieder zusammen, ohne jedoch Bandmitglied zu werden. Stéphane Grappelli entwickelte sich in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren zu dem einflussreichsten Violinisten der Jazzszene und machte sein Instrument im Jazz hoffähig. Grappelli nahm fortan mit allen großen Jazzmusikern weltweit Schallplatten auf oder ging mit ihnen auf Tournee. Am 30. September 1966 brachte Duke Ellington mit dem Konzert "Violin Summit" die damals vier bekanntesten Violinisten auf die Bühne. In verschiedenen Sets traten neben Grappelli Stuff Smith, Svend Asmussen und Jean-Luc Ponty auf. Gemeinsam spielten sie It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) . Grappelli ging von Mitte der 1970er bis in die 1990er Jahre häufig auf Konzerttourneen, zunächst mit Diz Disley. er feierte seinen 86. Geburtstag mit Gary Burton, Earl Hines, Martial Solal und Jean-Luc Ponty. Er spielte bis kurz vor seinem Tod Studioaufnahmen (auch mit jüngeren Musikern wie z.B. Michel Petrucciani) ein. Bitches Brew, album doppio di Miles Davis, registrato nell'agosto del 1969 e pubblicato nel marzo del 1970, è un disco leggendario che da cinquant'anni disorienta e incanta gli appassionati di jazz e rock. George Grella, l'autore di questo libro-guida, lo ascoltò per la prima volta con un amico quando aveva quindici anni senza riuscire a capire cosa stesse succedendo. Grella e il suo compagno erano giovani ma non sprovveduti, suonavano già discretamente, conoscevano i meccanismi della musica jazz: «Sapevamo barcamenarci fra melodie e successioni di accordi e piazzare un assolo dove richiesto. Insomma, sapevamo strutturare la nostra musica. Ma la struttura di Bitches Brew ci sfuggiva completamente: non capivamo come ciascuna nota determinasse la successiva».
