‎Important tirage photographique en couleurs monté dans un encadrement carré en bois, ajouré en cercle au centre. Très rare épreuve, peut-être tirée pour un essai de couleurs lors de la commercialisation d’une affiche en 1969. Mentions Mati Klarwein, Grain of Sand, Robert Crandall Assoc., 1968 sur le côté avec échelles chromatiques, petits manques de pigmentation dans la partie basse (111,5/117,2 cm dans un cadre de 122/122 cm).‎

‎Initialement conçue en 4 quarts de plan entre 1963 et 1965 pour décorer le plafond d’un temple de méditation de 3 m3, la fresque fut baptisée Grain of Sand en référence à un poème des Chants de l’innocence de William Blake (« To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour. ») A son sujet l’artiste écrivait lui-même : « Pendant longtemps, j'ai voulu peindre un tableau que l'on pourrait accrocher au mur dans n'importe quel sens, un univers en rotation sans haut ni bas. Je l'ai projeté comme une sorte de comédie musicale peinte avec des milliers d'acteurs, orchestrés en sanskrit avec Marilyn Monroe, Anita Ekberg, Ray Charles, Pablo Picasso, Brigitte Bardot, Roland Kirk, Cannonball Adderley, Ahmed Abdul Malik, Wonderwoman, la fille du cimetière de Delacroix, (…). » Achevées en 1970, l’ensemble des fresques de l’Aleph Temple furent présentées à l’exposition itinérante Summer of Love : Art of the Psychedelic Era, organisée en 2007 par la Tate Liverpool. Dans la lignée des productions d’Abdul Mati Klarwein pour Miles Davis (Bitches Brew, Live/Evil) ou Carlos Santana (Abraxas), l’image fut reprise pour illustrer la pochette du disque New Generation des Chambers Brothers en 1971.‎

‎Jazz is an improvisational style of music influenced by West African rhythms and originated in the African American community of New Orleans from a cross-fertilization of ragtime, blues, folk and Negro spirituals. Originally, the word jazz meant a "highly energetic dance". Jazz was not widely accepted by the general public in the early years, mainly because this type of music was associated with loose morals and low social status. When white and mixed jazz orchestras such as Benny Goodman's began playing this music from the 1930s onward, it became an accepted form of entertainment for whites as well. The swing period that began then marked a peak in the popularity of jazz, largely due to the fact that jazz was then still exclusively dance music. As jazz evolved into more experimental musical forms from the 1950s, and due to the rise of exciting dance music such as rock and roll, sales of jazz records declined sharply. "Née à Londres en 1913, dans la branche anglaise de la famille Rothschild, la Baronne Pannonica de Koenigswarter — surnommée Nica — connut très tôt une passion sans limites pour le jazz. Elle fut l'amie intime et la confidente des plus grands jazzmen et leur vint en aide sans compter. On sait que, malade, refusant de se faire hospitaliser, Charlie Parker mourut chez elle, et Thelonious Monk y vécut les neuf dernières années de sa vie. Avec son Polaroid, le plus souvent chez elle, elle photographia la plupart des musiciens : Dizzie Gillespie, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Bud Powell, Sun Ra, Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Sonny Rollins et tant d'autres. Entre 1961 et 1966, elle leur posa cette question ingénue : " Si on t'accordait trois voeux qui devaient se réaliser sur-le-champ, que souhaiterais-tu ? ", projetant de réunir leurs réponses souvent spontanées dans un livre. Ce livre, resté inédit à ce jour, le voici, réalisé d'après la maquette originale de Pannonica. Trois cents musiciens y répondent. Reconnaissants, les musiciens lui ont par ailleurs dédié une vingtaine de thèmes, notamment : Pannonica de Thelonious Monk, Nica, My dream of Nica de Sonny Clark, Blues for Nica de Kenny Drew, Thelonica de Tommy Flannagan..."‎
