È stato soprattutto il jazz moderno, con personaggi di primo piano quali Duke Ellington, Lester Young, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, Chet Baker, John Lewis e il suo Modern Jazz Quartet, a sviluppare musicalmente il concetto di cool, al quale hanno contribuito anche raffinati interpreti vocali quali Billie Holiday e Frank Sinatra, con una sensibilità venata di sottile understatement. Ma il jazz moderno ha a sua volta influenzato la letteratura della beat generation, in particolare l'opera di Jack Kerouac (ispirata da Charlie Parker), il cui ampio lascito risulta ancor oggi imprescindibile.

Ma la vera novità sta nelle proporzioni, nel respiro sinfonico di brani estesi per venti e più minuti, frutto di un sapiente lavoro di postproduzione che sconfina nella vera e propria composizione. Profetico, psichedelico, progettato come un'opera d'avanguardia e allo stesso tempo pianificato come un grande successo commerciale, "Bitches Brew" è il risultato di una serie di esperimenti durati alcuni anni, durante i quali la visione artistica di Miles entra in una fruttuosa tensione con gli interessi della sua casa discografica, grazie alla sottile mediazione di un geniale produttore, Teo Macero.
