Per prime vengono le orchestre bianche (con l'eccezione di Benny Goodman, già ospitato nel terzo volume). Questa sezione vede sfilare una serie di figure tra le più popolari del jazz d'anteguerra, come Artie Shaw, Jimmy e Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Charlie Barnet, Harry James e Gene Krupa. Segue un ampio panorama delle orchestre regionali, che integra ed espande la trattazione già inclusa nel secondo volume, con numerose schede su formazioni di regola ignorate dalle storie. Da ultimo vengono i piccoli complessi non associati alle figure finora trattate, in particolare il trio di Nat King Cole. In queste analisi, Schuller conferma ancora una volta la sua straordinaria conoscenza delle peculiarità di linguaggio di ciascuno strumento e l'abituale chiarezza nel mettere a fuoco le personalità e poetiche dei vari musicisti.
