ill., ril. Arrigo Polillo ha avuto la ventura, per circa quarant'anni a partire dal secondo dopoguerra, di incontrare i grandi maestri del jazz e di organizzare le loro esibizioni in Italia. Questo volume pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1978, offre una rievocazione scandita da una serie di ritratti illuminanti, arricchiti dalle fotografie scattate in quegli anni dal figlio Roberto. "Hai conosciuto John Coltrane?". "Sì? E che tipo era?". Non so quante volte mi sono sentito rivolgere domande simili; solo il nome varia di volta in volta. Non che i miei interlocutori volessero da me uno studio psicologico; si accontentavano di molto meno. Anche di sapere se il Tale è antipatico o simpatico, se è intelligente o tonto, se è gentile oppure no. Ho sempre cercato di rispondere come meglio potevo alle domande che mi venivano rivolte, ma alla fine mi sono dovuto chiedere: perché non rispondere una volta per tutte per iscritto, e cioè con un libro? Queste pagine sono nate così. In esse ho cercato di scrivere un rapido diario di quarant'anni vissuti in mezzo al jazz, e più precisamente fra le quinte del jazz.
