Completano il volume una sezione di scritti autobiografici e artistici con vari inediti - riprodotti nella nitida calligrafia dello stesso sassofonista - le partiture autografe di tre canzoni su testi poetici, una discografia consigliata e molte foto storiche. Se oggi il sax soprano è onnipresente sui palchi del jazz lo si deve alla curiosità musicale di Steve Lacy, il cui esempio spinse Coltrane a imbracciare il sax dritto. Ispirato da Sidney Bechet, Lacy ha suonato giovanissimo a New York con i grandi del jazz tradizionale come Rex Stewart e Henry "Red" Allen. Dopo l'incontro con Cecil Taylor e Thelonious Monk, si dedica a sviluppare la propria musica continuando a collaborare con una vasta gamma di musicisti, dal trombonista Roswell Rudd all'arrangiatore Gil Evans da Mal Waldron e George Lewis a Misha Mengelberg, Evan Parker, Joelle Léandre e Alexander von Schlippenbach.
