Si attraverseranno vicende che coinvolgono tanto George Bernard Shaw quanto Janis Joplin, Walt Disney come Jacques Prévert, i giganti del jazz e le star del pop, timidi parolieri e smargiassi produttori di Hollywood, song che sono diventate inni nazionali e musical che hanno dato il nome a grandi catene d'alberghi. Una tredicesima storia, la malinconica favola di una superba e fragilissima canzone che standard non divenne mai, più suggerimenti d'ascolto e un piccolo glossario completano un libro veramente poco standard, che nasconde sotto un velo di ironia scoperte sorprendenti e spesso inedite, che fa riflettere e diverte, a rotta di collo sulle strade tortuose del successo e della creatività. II suo vero nome era Eunice Waymon, ma nell'America segregazionista degli anni trenta per affermarsi dovette ribattezzarsi Nina (come bambina in spagnolo) Simone (come l'ammirata Simone Signoret). Avrebbe voluto entrare al conservatorio e diventare la prima concertista di musica classica nera, ma proprio il colore della sua pelle glielo impedì. Divenne quindi cantante jazz per caso. Ma, pianista prodigiosa e voce potente qual era, conobbe un successo folgorante, grazie anche alle grandi capacità sceniche. Nella sua ben documentata biografia di Nina Simone, David Brun-Lambert si sofferma tanto sulla figura pubblica della straordinaria musicista e dell'impegnata militante politica, quanto su quella privata della donna vulnerabile, che andò incontro a delusioni e sconfitte, e conobbe la solitudine, soprattutto negli ultimi anni di vita. Attingendo tra l'altro all'autobiografia di Nina Simone e alle testimonianze di figure a lei vicine (manager, musicisti, amici intimi, avvocati, oltre ad artisti come Charles Aznavour o Toni Morrison), ma anche alle parole di persone meno celebri che l'hanno conosciuta e hanno lavorato con lei, l'autore offre un ritratto a tutto tondo del suo personaggio, al di là dei cliché. La componente artistica e musicale riveste una grande importanza nel libro, ma non mancano anche notazioni sulla militanza politica, a fianco del Movimento per i diritti civili dei neri a partire dagli anni cinquanta e sessanta.
