KNIGHT, ARTHUR, IRA GERSHWIN
The Hollywood Style. Text by Arthur Knight Photographs by Eliot Elisofon
London: The Macmillan Company / Collier-Macmillan Ltd 1969. First Edition. Laid in is a note written entirely in the hand of Ira Gershwin with red felt pen 5 inches by 3 5/8 inches on cream card stock with a red border. The note reads: “Slats Dear Greetings from page 124 and dearest love from Ira and Lee Ira’s wife Leonore Strunskyâ€. Ira is referencing pages 124 - 130 in the book which is a profile of the Beverly Hills house that Ira and George Gershwin leased when they moved to California from New York in 1936. From the section: “ Notable among the recruits from New York’s musical-comedy stage were George Gershwin and his talented lyricist brother Ira and another gifted lyricist a close friend of the Gershwins E.Y. ‘Yip’ Harburg. For the past half-dozen years or so the Harburg house where Finian’s Rainbow was written has been the home of actress Natalie Wood.†Most of the section is illustrated with black & white photos by Elisofon but there is a full color two-page photo of Natalie Wood lying on her bed wearing a beautiful red dress.
