Many of them published here for the first time in any language these letters create a uniquely revealing portrait of Satie himself his music and his time. Edited and annotated by an eminent Satie scholar this volume includes correspondence with such major figures as Cocteau Picasso Picabia Milhaud Debussy Ravel and Stravinsky. It is illustrated with 75 line drawings by Cocteau Magritte Picasso and other contemporaries as well as drawings and musical scores by the composer himself." "This whimsical book about the eccentric Parisian composer Erik Alfred Leslie Satie 1866-1925 confirms his position as one of the most bizarre personalities in music history. Gathered by a determined iconographer the director of the Satie Foundation in Paris and arranged somewhat chronologically by topic such as "Friends" and "Lawsuits" these letters give us a picture of Satie the friend student neighbor composer and musical influence and of the only adherent to a religion that he founded. This book will entrance and delight those interested in Parisian cultural life in the early 20th century.

Marion Boyars hardcover

Erik Satie's "drame symphonique" was composed on a commission from the Princess Edmond de Polignac. Satie based his text on selections from the Plato works Symposium Phaedrus and Phaedo which mention the Greek philospher in the French translation by Victor Cousin. The work was first performed at the salon of Pricess de Polignac in April of 1918 with soprano Jane Bathori singing all four roles and the composer at the piano. This new vocal score produced in an easy-to-read format is a digitally enhanced reprint of the one first issued in 1919 by Editions de la Sirene in Paris. Also included is an English translation of the relevant sections from Plato prepared by Benjamin Jowett.

Original issue - Paris: Editions de la Sirene 1919.
