Selznick. Frederick Henry Hudson is an American serving in the Italian Army during WWI where he meets Catherine Barkley Jones a Red cross nurse. They have a torrid affair which results in pregnancy. The two gradually lose contact with one another. But Henry makes it to Switzerland where Barkley is hospitalized. The baby is stillborn and Barkley dies shortly afterward. Set in Europe shot on location in Italy. White titled wrappers with credits for screenwriter Hecht original director Vidor and producer Selznick. Title page present dated 1957 with a credit for screenwriter Hecht. 177 leaves with last page of text numbered 173. Mimeograph on eye-rest green stock. Il tempo fluido della sua musica era inimitabile, la sua poesia era incontaminata da influenze. Era il mio migliore amico. Non ho mai visto la carrozzina, per me era invisibile, ma lui sì. Quando il nostro camerino era in cima a una rampa di scale, mi diceva con nonchalance che ci saremmo visti dopo, al bar. Quando entrambi contraemmo la stessa malattia, gli dissi che non avevo mai provato un dolore più forte di quello. «Io non provo dolore» mi disse lui. Ovviamente. Me n'ero dimenticata. Quando gli chiesi di farci una passeggiata sotto la pioggia sul marciapiede mi disse che le sue mani si sarebbero bagnate. Seduta sul palco con lui, gli chiedevo di suonare una canzone e lui mi faceva il dito medio, che significava "oggi queste dita non funzionano". A me sembrava inespugnabile, immenso e meraviglioso, ma credo che Vic vedesse Vic come qualcosa di piccolo, difettoso, triste. Non so se riuscirò ancora ad ascoltare la sua musica, ma so quanto è necessario che la ascoltino gli altri. Quando ricevetti la telefonata che avevo temuto per quindici anni, persi il mio equilibrio. Tutto il mio essere si spostò a sinistra. Non riuscivo a stare in piedi senza finire contro il muro, e morivo di freddo. Non credo che mi piaccia questo pianeta senza Vic. Avevo giurato che non ci avrei mai vissuto, qui, senza di lui. Ma quello che ci ha lasciato è il suono di una vita che aveva combattuto i propri limiti, come tutte le vite dovrebbero fare. È il suono di qualcuno in fiamme. Fa di questo pianeta un posto migliore. E, volendo essere onesta con me stessa, ho ancora l'impressione che lui sia qui, ma libero dalle costrizioni. Forse ora è davvero immenso. Intatto. E felice."
