‎Edition originale peu commune de ce traité un peu paradoxal, quand on sait que le célèbre liégeois Grétry (1741-1813) avait poussé à l'extrême les principes de Rousseau en privilégiant dans ses oeuvres la mélodie sur l'harmonie en réduisant à sa plus simple expression le rôle de l'orchestre.L'essentiel de sa carrière s'était déroulé de 1768 à 1789, avec des dizaines d'opéras-comiques, dont certains connurent un succès européen, comme Zémire et Azor (1771) ou Richard Coeur-de-Lion (1784).
