Leipzig: C.F. Peters 1889. Peters Edition 228b. Plate # 7309. This exceedingly rare edition was edited by Joseph Hellmesberger. Robert Schumann turned to the unaccompanied Sonatas and Partitas of Bach late in his life around the end of 1852 and finished providing piano parts for them in February of 1853. Today we rightly ask why in the world anyone would feel the need to add a piano to pieces that most of us today regard as sheer perfection. Schumann's intentions were noble however since Bach's music was out of fashion at the time and the accompaniments were meant to make these Sonatas more accessible to the mid-19th-century audience. 108 pages. CONDITION: The score pages are clean uncreased and unmarked but the securely-bound cover - its spine heavily-taped - shows considerable edge-wear pencilled repertoire lists plus some staining and discoloration. This nevertheless quite respectable copy is now in a clear protective polypropylene bag with archival backing board. Large Softcover. Fair to Good. 9" x 12". Music Score. C.F. Peters Paperback
