Un outil très utile pour se repérer dans les 250 cantates contenant plus de mille pièces différentes, chœurs, symphonies, arias, duos, récitatifs, chorals, etc. Les auteurs proposent un classement chronologique permetant de suivre la progression créatrice de Bach, impossible à envisager si l'on s'en tient à la numérotation erronée du catalogue BWV. Ils prennent par ailleurs nettement position contre la mode voulant confiner Bach dans un étroit compartiment esthétique "baroque" et contre les prétendues "reconstitutions historiques" (instruments d'"époque", diapason fautif, petits garçons...). La préface expose clairement le débat.
