Studiò il violino, compose brani di musica da camera e l'"Ouverture" di un'opera, leggeva e interpretava i miti come una partitura d'orchestra: la musica fu una presenza costante nella vita di Lévi-Strauss. Non era una semplice passione privata, o un interesse coltivato ai margini della riflessione teorica. Il grande antropologo francese si servì della musica come di un dispositivo metodologico per penetrare le strutture del mito e della società. "In quanto linguaggio insieme intelligibile e intraducibile" scrive ne "Il crudo e il cotto" "la musica costituisce il supremo mistero delle scienze dell'uomo, quello contro il quale esse s'imbattono, e che costituisce la chiave del loro progresso." E proprio nelle relazioni omologhe tra musica e mito, Lévi-Strauss trova un motivo fondamentale di tutta la sua ricerca. Per Jean-Jacques Nattiez, musicologo e pioniere dell'etnomusicologia, è un impegno ormai irrinunciabile quello di riesaminare le concezioni estetiche e musicali di Lévi-Strauss, all'interno di un sistema di confronti e di analogie tra linguaggio, mito e musica. Questo impegno viene assolto per la prima volta in Lévi-Strauss musicista, un'opera che, ricostruendo la traiettoria intellettuale del fondatore dello strutturalismo antropologico, perviene a una riflessione globale sui rapporti tra scienza e arte, e sugli sviluppi delle scienze umane in generale.

After World War II he created and became the head of the department of musical folklore. Sokoli is considered to be a pioneer of Albanian ethnomusicology. His work on Ottoman music modes and practices in Balkan music has been regarded as one of the most important ones on the subject.

Uzeyir bey Abdul Huseyn oglu Hajibeyov was a Soviet composer conductor, publicist, playwright, teacher, translator, and social figure of Azerbaijani origin. He is recognized as the father of Azerbaijani composed classical music and opera. Uzeyir Hajibeyov composed the music of the national anthem of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (which was re-adopted after Azerbaijan regained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991). He also composed the anthem used by Azerbaijan during the Soviet period. He was the first composer of an opera in the Islamic world.
