Hoboken 15 202 incorrectly dated "1852"; with wrappers.<br/><br/>Schumann set the poem in a German translation by Karl Adolf Suckow 1802-1847. The overture to Manfred was first performed in Weimar on March 14th 1852; the incidental music to the poem was introduced three months later in Leipzig. Slightly worn; some foxing browning and dampstaining throughout.<br/><br/>A good wide-margined copy. First Edition second issue. The first issue predates the opening of the publisher's office in Leipzig 1862 and has Winterthur as the only place of publication. Hofmann p. 315. Hoboken 245 first issue. <br/><br/>The text is by Friedrich Rückert 1788-1866. Schumann set the poem in full and added the first stanza of the chorale "Nun danket alle Gott" melody by Johann Crüger text by Martin Rinckart.<br/><br/>"This New Year's Song has some pleasing and original moments. In the earlier part of the piece there is a tuneful Mendelssohnian duet for soprano and alto and some dramatic writing for solo bass including most unusually for Schumann a short passage of recitative. Frederick II Grand Duke of Baden 9 July 1857 in Karlsruhe - 9 August 1928 in Badenweiler was the last Grand Duke of Baden. He became the head of the House of Z�hringen on 28 September 1907 after the death of his father Frederick I. He abdicated on 22 November 1918 amidst the tumults of the German Revolution of 1918-19 which resulted in the abolition of the Grand Duchy. After his death in 1928 the headship of the house was transferred over to his grand uncle's grandson thus being his second cousin who was the last Chancellor of Imperial Germany Prince Maximilian of Baden. As a student at the University of Heidelberg Frederick was a member of the Suevia Corps a student organization. After the death of his cousin Carola of Vasa he became the representative of the descent of the Kings of Sweden of the House of Holstein-Gottorp. On 20 September 1885 in Schloss Hohenburg he married Princess Hilda of Nassau only daughter of the exiled Duke Adolf. There was no surviving issue from the marriage. - - - - - Princess Hilda Charlotte Wilhelmine of Nassau 5 November 1864 - 8 February 1952 was the last Grand Duchess of Baden. She was the daughter of Adolphe Grand Duke of Luxembourg who was Duke of Nassau until he was deposed in 1866. Hilda married Frederick II Grand Duke of Baden on 20 September 1885 at Schloss Hohenburg. The marriage did not produce surviving children. The couple became Grand Duke and Grand Duchess in 1907. Hilda was described as intelligent and interested in art and was often present at art-exhibitions and museums. Several schools and streets such as the schools Hilda-Gymnasium in Pforzheim Hilda-Gymnasium in Koblenz and the streets north- and south Hilda Promenade in Karlsruhe are named after her. Frederick and Hilda were deposed as Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Baden in 1918 when all German monarchies were overthrown. At the time of the revolution her sister-in-law Queen Victoria of Sweden was visiting the family. After the abdication of the German emperor riots spread in Karlsruhe on 11 November. The son of a courtier led a group of soldiers up to the front of the palace followed by a great crowd of people where a few shots were fired. Hilda as well as the rest of the family left the palace the backway and left for the Zwingenberg palace in the Neckar valley. By permission of the new government they were allowed to stay at the Langenstein Palace which belonged to a Swedish count Douglas. The government gave the order that the former grand ducal family was to be protected and that Langenstein be excepted from housing the returning soldiers because the Queen of Sweden was in their company and Baden should not do anything to offend Sweden. In 1919 the family requested permission from the government to reside in Mainau and was told that they were now private citizens and could do as they wished. Hilda is described as a jolly and cheerful character with the ability to ease things up with her good sense of humor an ability she used during the revolution and the years after taking care of her husband who had a weak health. As Frederick and Hilda were without own direct heirs they bequeathed their castle of Mainau to Fredrick's only sister's grandson Count Lennart Bernadotte who incidentally was also a great-grandson of Hilda's aunt. He was the second son of King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden and his first wife Margaret Duchess of Scania a granddaughter of Britain's Queen Victoria. He was born a Swedish prince and was originally titled Duke of Uppland but was no longer authorized to use his royal titles from 1934 when he married a commoner. He was a paternal uncle of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and a maternal uncle of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece. Prince Gustaf Adolf Oscar Fredrik Arthur Edmund Duke of V�sterbotten 22 April 1906 - 26 January 1947 was a Swedish prince directly in line of succession to the Swedish throne. Born in Stockholm he was the eldest son of Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden the future King Gustaf VI Adolf and his first wife Princess Margaret of Connaught. Gustaf Adolf was the father of the current king Carl XVI Gustaf. He was known by his last given name Edmund in the family. The prince was killed on 26 January 1947 in an airplane crash at Kastrup Airport Copenhagen Denmark.
