Un uomo vittima di irrefrenabili sbalzi d'umore, irascibile, scostante. E tuttavia generoso, scaltro negli affari, abile nel marketing di se stesso, capace di tessere fruttuose relazioni sociali. Desideroso di dar prova di sé nelle grandi capitali europee, eppure spaventato all'idea di abbandonare il bozzolo rassicurante della capitale asburgica. Una figura complessa, dunque, impossibile da restituire in tutte le sue innumerevoli sfaccettature. Beethoven di Giovanni Carli Ballola fu pubblicato per la prima volta, per i tipi di Sansoni Accademia, nel 1967, e fu accolto subito da un grande successo, testimoniato dai commenti ammirati di quasi tutta la critica e dalle numerose ristampe alle quali ha seguito, nel 1985, una nuova edizione (Rusconi) che comportò una significativa revisione: ed è appunto questa ultima versione che il nostro volume ripropone. Chiedersi oggi il perché di tanto successo è doveroso. La prima risposta è semplicissima: perché è un bellissimo libro, che negli anni non ha perso nulla della sua validità. Ma in tale definizione si celano anche motivazioni più sottili, che il tempo si è incaricato di rendere più evidenti. Il volume ha infatti il duplice pregio dell'assoluto rigore e, al tempo stesso, dell'altrettanto assoluta mancanza di pedanteria. Gettata a mare in un sol colpo tutta la bolsa retorica sul "titano di Bonn", l'autore affronta l'uomo e il musicista Beethoven senza quella partigianeria che è da sempre difetto primario di tutte quelle monografie, anche di autori insigni e documentatissimi, nelle quali lo scrivente, per un motivo o per l'altro, finisce per immedesimarsi con il biografato giustificandone alla fine mediocrità e manchevolezze. In questa serena spregiudicatezza di giudizio, ad ogni passo sostenuta da una competenza enciclopedica, va ricercato un altro dei motivi del successo del libro. Il quale insomma cerca di unire sempre l'attendibilità scientifica delle informazioni alla chiarezza divulgativa: sostenuta e avvalorata, quest'ultima, da una scrittura di grande eleganza.
