Light edge wear and minor toning; very good with a strong impression of the cover illustration. An antebellum piano dance reflecting the plantation imagery that circulated widely in mid-nineteenth-century American popular music. “Cuba Plantation Dance†was composed by Chas. H. Wilson a little-documented composer whose name appears chiefly in connection with this work and issued in Philadelphia during the early 1850s by Edward L. Walker the predecessor firm to the major publishing house Lee & Walker. A copy is recorded in the Levy Collection at Johns Hopkins which dates the publication to 1855.<br /> <br /> The cover presents a stylized plantation landscape framed by tall stalks of sugar cane with a small central vignette of a dancing Black figure. The use of Cuban plantation imagery reflects contemporary American fascination with the Caribbean sugar economy and with plantation life beyond the United States. During the 1850s Cuba was one of the largest slave societies in the Atlantic world. By the midcentury the island’s sugar plantations relied on hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans and the enslaved population of Cuba was estimated at roughly 400000 people in the 1840s–1850s working primarily in the rapidly expanding sugar industry. Although Spain formally agreed to end the Atlantic slave trade in 1820 illegal importations of enslaved Africans into Cuba continued for decades supplying labor for the island’s plantations well into the 1850s. American publishers frequently borrowed such imagery for plantation-themed dance music marketed to the parlor trade. Pieces labeled “plantation dances†or “Ethiopian dances†formed part of the broader culture of minstrel and plantation entertainment. The title page bears a dedication to “Miss Arabelle Conrad†typical of mid-century sheet music addressed to amateur pianists. Hardback. New. Recent advances in technology have permitted the construction of large dams reservoirs and channels. This progress has necessitated the development of new design and construction techniques particularly with the provision of adequate flood release facilities. Chutes and spillways are designed to spill large water discharges over a hydraulic structure e.g. dam weir without major damage to the structure itself and to its environment. At the hydraulic structure the flood waters rush as an open channel flow or free-falling jet and it is essential to dissipate a very signifi cant part of the flow kinetic energy to avoid damage to the hydraulic structure and its surroundings. Energy dissipation may be realised by a wide range of design techniques. A number of modern developments have demonstrated that such energy dissipation may be achieved a along the chute b in a downstream energy dissipator or c a combination of both. The magnitude of turbulent energy that must be dissipated in hydraulic structures is enormous even in small rural and urban structures. For a small storm waterway discharging at a 4 m3/s mm high drop the turbulent kinetic energy flux per unit time is 120 kW! At a large dam the rate of energy dissipation can exceed tens to hundreds of gigawatts; that is many times the energy production rate of nuclear power plants. Many engineers have never been exposed to the complexity of energy dissipator designs to the physical processes taking place and to the structural challenges. Several energy dissipators spillways and storm waterways failed because of poor engineering design. It is believed that a major issue affecting these failures was the lack of understanding of the basic turbulent dissipation processes and of the interactions between free-surface aeration and flow turbulence. In that context an authoritative reference book on energy dissipation in hydraulic structures is proposed here. This first sound movie on Palestine was produced by Keren Hajessod Jerusalem a Fox Movietone film of the Urim Palestine Film Company Jerusalem. It was directed and edited by Juda Leman for the Keren Hayesod production manager Leo Herrmann with music by Boris Morros and songs by Daniel Sambursky. The movie premiered in May 1935 in Berlin was shown at the Venice Biennale of the same year and in November 1935 in Tel Aviv and New York here with Albert Einstein present. <br /> <br /> It depicts the buildup of Jewish homes in Israel providing insight into the life of the pioneers. The booklet contains four of the film's songs in German and Hebrew a speech given at a mass event in Haifa a description of the Zionist Movement a list of Zionist organizations in Germany and two photo-illustrated contributions on the Keren Hajessod and the Keren Kajemeth Lejisrael in charge of land policy. An advertisement for the biweekly "Jüdische Rundschau" and a score with text for the song Hatikwa at the end complete the program. The photos were provided by Keren Kajemeth Lejisrael printed by Siegfried Scholem Berlin. <br /> <br /> Text in German and Hebrew. Some wear along edges of wraps and spine small chips and closed tears with light creasing. Remnant of brown stamp and small scuff on cover with light sunning in center. Inked name at top of foredge on title page. Brief Hebrew note inked on page 5. Booklet block age-toned with light vertical crease in middle. Baruch Agadati made the first Hebrew language newsreels and with his film "This is the Land" he too claims to have created the first full-length Hebrew film with sound in 1935. "This is the Land" celebrates the fifty years of Jewish growth and cultivating Canaan. The Zionist propaganda film tells the story of the land from the foundation of the first Jewish colonies in 1882 through W.W.I. the Balfour Declaration the establishment of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and other events.
