È la fase in cui Verdi, avendo sfruttato a fondo le possibilità dell'estetica e della forma che aveva dato origine a capolavori come "Il Trovatore" o "La Traviata", trova nuovo impulso nel confronto con i grandi maestri dell'opera parigina nei "Vêpres Siciliennes". La varietà del pensiero musicale e la novità della scala spettacolare si faranno sentire nelle opere successive, da "Simon Boccanegra" a "Un balla in Maschera", per culminare nella vasta concezione della "Forza del Destino". Di particolare interesse, a fianco delle analisi dettagliate delle singole opere, sono i capitoli dedicati alle difficoltà che la tradizione musicale italiana stava all'epoca attraversando, e alla maturazione del personale stile verdiano.
