Ed eccola, adolescente, a Pietroburgo per affinarsi nel canto, lavando i marmi del Marinskij per mantenersi agli studi e spiare i grandi della Lirica. Lì, come in una favola, la noterà il giovane direttore artistico e d'orchestra Valery Gergiev. Verrà così il debutto con le mozartiane «Nozze di Figaro», e poi i grandi successi internazionali dovuti alla sua eccezionale bellezza, alla voce piena e limpida da "soprano drammatico d'agilità", all'abilità mimica ed interpretativa, al grande carisma iconico. Seguono le stagioni allo Staatsoper di Vienna ed al Festival di Salisburgo, al Metropolitan di New York ed alla Scala di Milano, i grandi concerti nelle capitali del mondo, con incisioni che dominano la produzione Deutsche Grammophon.
