L'autore tratta il vasto mondo della medicina nei suoi diversi settori (oculistica, odontoiatria, chirurgia, eccetera), raccontando la nascita di istituzioni come la sanità pubblica e di professioni, quali quella infermieristica. "Storia della chirurgia" ambienta gli eventi nel loro contesto, grazie all'esposizione di fatti relativi alla società, ai suoi personaggi e alle testimonianze rimaste. Biografie di medici noti e dei loro pazienti, aneddoti e brani tratti da scritti famosi, documenti di fatti bizzarri e originali, curiosità e superstizioni: tutto questo contribuisce alla storia degli "uomini in bianco" e della loro indispensabile ed emozionante professione. L'autore di questo libro, arricchito da più di 100 illustrazioni accuratamente selezionate, è contemporaneamente un esperto chirurgo e uno storico della medicina.
