‎First edition, in the extremely rare offprint, of Adams and Day's landmark paper, in which they demonstrated that electricity could be produced from light without moving parts, eventually leading to the modern solar cell. It is here that Adams shows for the first time that the discovery of Willoughby Smith - that the conductivity of selenium is due only to the effect of light - is correct and furthermore that light has an effect on the resistance of selenium and that light generates electrical currents in selenium. Two years later Adams expanded the work and published 'Solar Heat'. Here he described his ""Power Tower Concept"", which to this day remains the basis of solar plants.William Grylls Adams (1836 - 1915), professor of Natural Philosophy at King's College, London, and brother of the famous astronomer John Couch Adams (1819-1892), was President of the Physical Society of London from 1878 to 1880. In 1872 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and in 1875 delivered their Bakerian Lecture. He was president of the Institute of Electrical Engineers and of the mathematical and physical section of the British Association. His greatest achievement lies in demonstrating the seminal discovery that electricity could be produced from light without moving parts. The road to this discovery was begun in 1839 when Becquerel discovered that illumination of one of two metal plates in a dilute acid changed the electromotive force. Another French scientist, Auguste Mouchout, followed up on Becquerel's discovery, but it was not until 1876, when Adams and Richard Evans Day discovered that illuminating a junction between selenium and platinum has a photovoltaic effect, that the foundation for the documented use of solar thermal power was laid [with the publication of the present paper]. ""From a historical viewpoint, it is of interest to note that the first experiments on the generation of solar thermal power in India were conducted by an Englishman, William Adams, about one hundred years ago. Adams stayed in Coloba, Mumbai and performed his experiments in the compound of his bungalow. He used a sphecical reflector 12 m in diameter, made from sheets of glass mirror. The sun's rays were focussed on a boiler having a capacity of about 60 litres and the steam generated was used to drive a 2.5 HP steam pump. Adams's work is described in a book written by him entitled ""Solar Heat - A Substitute for Fuel in Tropical Countries for Heating Steam Boilers and Other Purposes"" (Education Society's Press, Byculla, Bombay, 1878)."" (Sukhatme & Neyak, ""Solar Energy. Principles of Thermal Collection and Storage"", p. 48)""William Grylls Adams was and English scientist who taught as a professor in the department of Natural Philosophy at King's College. He is notable for his contribution to the discovery of the photoelectric effect, on which all solar energy applications are based. He was inspired by Auguste Mouchout's invention of the solar steam engine. With the intent of making improvements to Mouchot's design, Adams began to experiment with different materials and designs. In 1876, working in conjunction with his student, Richard Day, he discovered that selenium produced electricity when exposed to sunlight. Using the selenium, he then added mirrors to the design to concentrate sunlight on the engine. This design came to be known as the power tower concept and is still in use today."" (Smith & Taylor, ""Renewable and Alternative Energy resources: A Reference Handbook"", 2008, pp. 1556-56).Wheeler Gift, No. 3856. Shiers ""Early Televison"", no. 73.‎

‎First German edition (the original French was published in 1810) of this highly influential book, in which the first modern process of preserving food is presented for the first time, years before Pasteur presents his method of pasteurization. Appert's method consisted in placing the food to be preserved in bottles closed with the best corks obtainable. The bottles were placed in boiling water for considerable periods. Appert claimed that the most perishable foodstuff could be preserved by this method and his claims were completely substantiated. Gay-Lussac believed that the keeping qualities of Appert's preserves were due to the expulsion of the air during the heating process. In this way fermentation and putrescence was avoided.""La Maison Appert (English: The House of Appert), in the town of Massy, near Paris, became the first food bottling factory in the world, nearly 100 years before Louis Pasteur proved that heat killed bacteria. Appert patented his invention and established a business to preserve a variety of food in sealed bottles. Appert's method was to fill thick, large-mouthed glass bottles with produce of every description, ranging from beef, fowl, eggs, milk, and prepared dishes (according to sources). His greatest success for publicity was an entire sheep. He left air space at the top of the bottle, and the cork would then be sealed firmly in the jar by using a vise. The bottle was then wrapped in canvas to protect it, while it was dunked into boiling water and then boiled for as much time as Appert deemed appropriate for cooking the contents thoroughly. In honour of Appert, canning is sometimes called ""appertisation"", but should be distinguished from pasteurization. Appert's early attempts at food preservation by boiling involved cooking the food to a temperature far in excess of what is used in pasteurization (70 °C (158 °F)), and can destroy some of the flavour of the preserved food."" ‎First printing of the paper in which Bell speculates how his and Tainter's invention of the Photophone or Radiophone could have a wider use. He pondered the photophone's possible scientific use in the spectral analysis of artificial light sources, stars and sunspots. He later also speculated on its possible future applications, though he did not anticipate either the laser or fiber-optic telecommunications:""Can Imagination picture what the future of this invention is to be!.... We may talk by light to any visible distance without any conduction wire.... In general science, discoveries will be make by the Photophone that are undreamed of just now."" Not long after its invention laboratories within the Bell System continued to improve the photophone in the hope that it could supplement or replace expensive conventional telephone lines. Its earliest non-experimental use came with military communication systems during World War I and II, its key advantage being that its light-based transmissions could not be intercepted by the enemy.‎

‎"BLUMLEIN, ALAN DOWER.‎

‎Improvements in and relating to Sound-transmission, Sound-recording and Sound-reproducing Systems. [British Patent] Number: 394,325. [Date of Application, 14th December, 1931. No. 34,657 / 31 - Complete left: Nov. 10, 1932. Complete accepted, 14th Jun... - [THE INVENTION OF STEREO]‎

‎[London, Eyre and Spottiswoode], 1933, 14th June. 8vo. Disbound. Stamp to p. 1. 22 p + 1 folded plate.‎

‎Scarce original printed patent for the world's first stereo sound-recording system thus revolutionizing music recordings, radio broadcasting and cinematographic recordings. The present patent is considered ""a bible for sound engineers [and] it pre-empts all further useful reasoning on the subject"" (New Scientist). ""It is a classic patent in the history of electrical engineering"" (British Library, Patent Blog)"" it was more than a century ahead of its time, as stereo recordings did not become the standard until the 1950'ies. Blumlein furthermore anticipated many of the thoughts and techniques behind Dolby Pro-Logic. Blumlein's patent is not only a milestone in the history of engineering, unlike most other patents it reads like a text book and is still by most sound engineers considered the best source text on how stereo works. On several occasions, Blumlein explained that a blind person sitting in the cinema would be able to point out exactly where the actor was on the screen with his system. He called this system 'Binaural Sound', from the human factor of having two ears by which we hear sound. Today it is better known as Stereophonic or 'Stereo' Sound.""In 1931 Blumlein's GB 394325 was applied for by Electric and Musical Industries Limited, later better known as EMI. It enabled the first single track, two channel gramophone recordings. It is a classic patent in the history of electrical engineering, and has the then extraordinary number of 70 claims (half a dozen was normal at the time). The story goes that he thought of the basic idea when he and his wife were at the cinema. The early ""talkies"" had a single set of speakers which meant that the actor might be on one side of the screen while his voice seemed to come from the other side. Blumlein declared to his wife that he had found a way to make the sound follow the actor across the screen.Blumlein is credited with 128 patents in a working life of 18 years (he was only 38 when he died, while engaged in radar experiments in a Halifax bomber). A true polymath, he worked in virtually every field of electrical engineering."" (British Library). ""The work conducted at E.M.I. is best preserved through the writings of one its researchers and one the founding fathers of stereo recording, Alan D. Blumlein. The patents of Blumlein, especially the classic ""Specification 394,325"" accepted in 1933, still inform and challenge theorists and recording TdC-6 techniques to this day. Blumlein's basic approach to stereo relied on the realization that simple level differences at the loudspeakers would translate into both level and phase differences at the ears, thus better approximating the way sound is heard naturally (more on this topic later). To create only level differences at the loudspeakers, Blumlein had to capture only level differences at the microphones. A coincident pair of directional microphones, with no time delay between either channel, can best provide such information. For this reason, the stereo configuration that today bears Blumlein's name is a coincident pair of pure pressure gradient figure-8 microphones, the patterns of which are highly directional."" (Clercq, A More Realistic View of Mid/Side Stereophony)Years would pass before enthusiasts at EMI would resurrect Binaural sound and when they did, Blumlein's work initiated a revolution - a revolution which is still in process: New methods and techniques are constantly being developed in order to make sound recordings sound as lively and real as possible.‎
