‎Scarce first edition. In this work, Bergsträsser develops a synthematographic, or ""whole communication"" system, employing a telegraphic apparatus which uses both visual and auditory signals. The author is particularly anxious to demonstrate the difference between his own scheme for signaling, and that of the Frenchman Claude Chappe. Bergsträsser argues that Chappe merely modified an earlier optical system propsed by the English experimental philosopher Robert Hooke (1635-1703), while his own scheme is not subject to the limitations of sight. Bergsträsser sees his synthematograph as primarily suited to military uses.‎

‎First appearance of all the 6 founding papers around the invention of the ""Harmonic Analyzer"" and with the mathematical theory for the differential analyzor, containing both the mathematical theories and the practical descriptions of the analyzer and further also having the paper by Lord Kelvin's brother (the first paper offered) in which the machinery is shown for the first time.""A ball and disk integrator was the vital invention needed to build the FIRST AUTOMATIC ANALOG COMPUTING MACHINES. Lord kelvin used this integrator -devised for a planimeter in the 1860s by his brother, James Thomson - on two new kinds of analog computers: a harmonic analyzer and a tide predictor. he later specified a more general machine - a differential analyzer.""(Eames in ""A Computer Perspective"").""The harmonic analyzer was used in conjunction with Thomson's tide predictor...The present paper (""Harmonic Analyzer"") contains the first full description of the harmoniz analyzer, which was ""designed rudimentally"" (p. 371) in Thomson's ""On an integrating machine having a new kinematic principle""(also offered here),,,,James Thomson's integrator - ""one of the first really workable integrating devices"" (Williams 1985, 207) - served as the basis for other analog machines designed by William Thomson for solving simultaneous linear equations and integrating differential equations. Thomson first described such a machine, composed of several Thomson integrators connedted together, in his paper on ""Mechanical integration of the linear differentialequations of the decond order...."" (also offred here)"" however the ""idea could then hardly be carried out, forone reason because an integrator, which is simply a variable- speed drive, could not then be buitl both accurate and capable of carrying sufficient load to move numerous mechanical parts"" (Bush 193, 450). The full realization of Thomson's idea did not come until fifty years later, when Vannevar Bush invented the torque amplifier for use in his differential analyzer.""(Hook and Norman).‎

‎The rare appendixes, separately published, to the important ""Treadgold on the Steam Engine and on Steam Navigation"". Tredgold's work on the steam engine was long considered the best and most complete work of its kind. ""Few details of engine design escaped Tredgold's attention . . . his book is a curious combination of fact, theory, and speculation, and its author uses every opportunity to display his mathematical knowledge. Yet it undoubtedly was a notable contribution to steam engine design and theory in its day"" (Finch Engineering Classics pp 104-110). ""Thomas Tredgold (1788-1829) was a self-taught engineer. He trained as an apprentice cabinetmaker in Durham and then in Scotland before moving to London to work at his uncle's firm of architects. There he began an intense programme of self-improvement, reading books on engineering, chemistry, mineralogy, geology and mathematics. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Tredgold died relatively young from exhaustion.Tredgold's last major work was on The steam engine, published in 1827. In his preface, he apologises that his book appears to be rather large for its subject matter but explains that 'though confined to a single source of power, that power is gigantic …':"" (Devon & Exeter Institution)‎

‎Rare offprint issue of Weaver's speech when he was elected president for The American Association for the Advancement of Science. Weaver is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of machine translation, and as an important figure in creating support for science in the United States. Along with communication, Weaver's greatest personal research interest lay with the mathematical theory of probability. It was his belief that all scientists are deeply concerned with probability. For a vast range of cases in which it is entirely impossible for science to answer the question 'Is this statement true?' Probability theory does furnish the basis for judgment as to how likely it is that the statement is true.‎

His interest was, however, not confined to photography he was an amateur botanist, entomologist and astronomer. This was, however, achieved by other inventors first, notably Charles Wheatstone and the Siemens brothers.""In 1856 Wilde established a business in Manchester as an electric-telegraph and lightning-conductor engineer, and spent some years on the development of a magneto-electric alphabetic telegraph, which was demonstrated at the international exhibition in London in 1862. In December 1863 he patented a twin-armature machine in which a magneto-electric generator provided excitation current for the field winding of another generator. These machines were made in quantity by Wilde & Co., but in use they had the disadvantage of becoming very hot. In 1867 [Described in the present paper]. he patented an entirely different type of multipolar machine, which was used for electro-deposition and arc lighting. Among his other patents was one in 1875 for the making of copper rollers for calico printing."". (Oxford DNB). Henry Wilde (1833 - 1919) was a wealthy individual from Manchester, England who used his self-made fortune to indulge his interest in electrical engineering. He invented the dynamo-electric machine, or self-energising dynamo, an invention for which Werner von Siemens is more usually credited and, in fact, discovered independently. At any rate, Wilde was the first to publish, his paper was communicated to the Royal Society by Michael Faraday in 1866. The self-energising dynamo replaces the permanent magnets of previous designs with electro-magnets and in so doing achieved an enormous increase in power. The machine was considered remarkable at the time, especially since Wilde was fond of spectacular demonstrations, such as the ability of his machine to cause iron bars to melt.‎

‎"WRIGHT, ORVILLE.‎

‎Stability of Aeroplanes.‎

‎(Washington, Government Printing Office, 1915). 8vo. As extracted from ""the Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution"". A fine and clean copy. Pp. 209-216.‎

‎First printing of Orville Wright's speech on the longitudinal equilibrium, or how to keep the stability of aeroplanes, thus being one of the very first manuals on how to fly an aeroplane. ""Although in learning to fly the beginner finds most difficulty in mastering the lateral control, it is his lack of knowledge of certain features of the fore-and-aft equilibrium that leads to most of the serious accidents"". (From the introduction to the present speach). The Wright brothers were early on aware of the importance of longitudinal control. Most of the early airplanes - the ones that could actually lift off ground - had the decisive flaw of having bad, in some cases non-existing, longitudinal control which eventually caused the airplanes to crash. In the summer of 1910, the Wright Company introduced what would become their most popular aircraft - the Wright Model B. The Model B was a pusher biplane with wing warping to control roll, like their earlier aircraft. But unlike earlier aircrafts it also had a conventional tail assembly, which gave it better longitudinal stability, and it rested on wheels rather than skids, doing away with the need to launch the aircraft from a rail. This model was produced from 1910 through 1914. In 1911 the U.S. Congress made its first appropriation for military aviation. Four airplanes were ordered and numbers 3 and 4 were Wright Model B's. Both were accepted at Fort Sam Houston, Texas on April 17, 1911.The two brothers were also investigating automatic stability systems. They devised a mechanism that could sense changes in attitude and longitude which would make compensating adjustments to keep the aircraft flying evenly in the desired direction. It consisted of a pendulum, which sensed and controlled roll or yaw, and a vane, which sensed the aircraft's pitch. They applied for a patent for this automatic stabilizing system on February 8, 1908.""The culmination of the Wrights’ achievements came with Wilbur’s two flights at New York in 1909. On 29 September, taking off from and landing at Governors Island, he made a circuit of the Statue of Liberty"" on 4 October he flew a twenty-one-mile course to Grant’s Tomb and back. After their triumph the brothers quietly turned to teaching others to fly and to directing the Wright Company. They now had many imitators and rivals, and were forced to defend their pioneer patent in the courts."" (DSB).‎
