[EBU'L-IZZI-CEZERÎ, (1136-1206)].
Ebu'l-Izzi-Cezerî Kongresi. 14 Mart, 1996, Kayseri.
Fine English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In Turkish. 32, [6] p., b/w ills. Ebu'l-Izz-Cezerî Kongresi. 14 Mart, 1996, Kayseri. A study on Abu al-'Iz Ibn Isma'il ibn al-Razaz al-Jazari, (1136-1206). It's considered that he was pioneer in the field of cybernetics. He was a polymath; a scholar, inventor, mechanical engineer, craftsman, artist, and mathematician from Jazirat ibn Umar (current Cizre, Ottoman Turkey), who lived during the Islamic Golden Age (Middle Ages). He is best known for writing the al-Jami? bain al-?ilm wa al-?amal al-nafi? fi ?ina?at al-?iyal (The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices) in 1206, where he described 100 mechanical devices, some 80 of which are trick vessels of various kinds, along with instructions on how to construct them. Some of his devices were inspired by earlier devices, such as one of his monumental water clocks, which was based on that of a Pseudo-Archimedes. He also cites the influence of the Banu Musa brothers (and also Leonardo Da Vinci) for his fountains, al-Asturlabi for the design of a candle clock, and Hibat Allah ibn al-Husayn (d. 1139) for musical automata. Al-Jazari goes on to describe the improvements he made to the work of his predecessors, and describes a number of devices, techniques and components that are original innovations which do not appear in the works by his precessors.

[Ermitage]. Piccard, Rodolphe / Solntsev, Fedor Grigoryevich.
[Drevnosti Bosfora Kimmeriiskago khraniashchiiasia v Imperatorskom muzeie Ermitazha]. St Petersburg, Imprimerie de l'Académie Impériale des Sciences, 1854.
Folio (ca. 380 x 547 mm). 3 vols., including atlas. (22), CLI, (3), 279, (1) pp. (8), 339, (1) pp. Atlas has chromolithographed pictorial title, 48 engraved and 41 chromolithographed plates (numbered I-LXXXVI), 5 engraved plans, and 2 folding engraved maps. Contemporary marbled boards; modern spines with giltstamped labels. The rare first edition of this monumental work on the antiquities housed at the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, published at the personal expense of Emperor Nicolas I. The Tsar took a deep interest in Russian archaeological finds following the discovery of a Scythian burial mound near Kerch in 1830, and many of these discoveries are featured here. - A large number of the plates are magnificently lithographed in vivid colour after the drawings of Piccard and Solntzev. (Brunet). - The Swiss painter and engraver Piccard (1807-88) had studied in Paris and was active in Lausanne until the end of the 1830s. Long in Russia, he would return to Lausanne in 1869. Solntsev (1801-92) had already completed the massive six-volume album series "Antiquities of the Russian State" (1849-1853) and was one of the principal interior decorators of the Kremlin Palace. - Some foxing throughout, mainly concerning the margins and the first and last quires of the text volumes, but to some extent also the margins of the plates. Bindings professionally repaired. Removed from the Library of the Birmingham Assay Office, one of the four assay offices in the United Kingdom, with their inconspicuous library stamp to the flyleaves. Extremely rare: we can trace only one other copy at auction (2013, Sotheby's Paris, sale 1333, lot 532: EUR 59,100 - the duc de Luynes copy). Brunet I, 321. Graesse I, 149f. Thieme/Becker XXVI, 579. [Ernest of Saxony].
Wolverdiente Ehren-Seule dem weyland durchläuchtigsten Fürsten und Herrn Herrn Ernst Hertzogen zu Sachsen, Jülich, Cleve und Bergk, Landgrafen zu Thüringen, Marckgrafen zu Meissen, Gefürsteten Grafen zu Henneberg, Grafen zu der Marck und Ravensberg, Herrn zu Ravenstein, ec. Aufgerichtet zum Friedenstein. Gotha, Christoph Reyher, [1678].
Folio. Engr., folding frontispiece, t. p., (2), 378 [but: 380], 108, (20) pp. With 10 folding plates, woodcut arms on title-page, and numerous ornamental woodcut initials ins vignettes. Contemporary calf, dated 1681, with giltstamped spine title. Only edition of this elaborate fête book, depicting the funeral festivities and sermon for the popular Duke Ernest I of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (b. 1601, d. 26 March 1675). "One of the great memorial volumes of the Baroque" (Jantz). The frontispiece (dated 1678), showing the bust of Duke Ernest, is signed by Jacob von Sandrart (1630-1708, cf. Thieme/Becker XXIX, 397), as are the fine portrait of the Duke and a scene showing him lying in state among angels; the three views of the closed coffin, the funeral procession, the plate of memorial coins, and the three plates showing the order of the procession are very likely his work as well. The end is brought up by Kaspar von Stieler's "Hoch-Fürstlicher Ehren-Altar", "a giant-sized poem of 616 rhymed trochaic eight-beat lines, followed, with special title page, by 'Josias, Das ist: Der weyland Durchläuchtigste Fürst und Herr, Herr Ernst Herzog zu Sachsen [...] Mit dem Gottseligen Könige Josia verglichen von M. Heinrich Ernst Treibern [...]'; 208 alexandrine lines, with annotations" (Faber du F.). The poet, jurist, and lexicographer Stieler (1632-1707) is often cited as possible editor of the entire fêtebook. - No other copy with 10 plates is known: contains not only the frequently missing portrait (c. 60 x 44 cm), but also both views of the un-draped coffin. Occasional slight paper damage to multiple folds; slight edge tear to portrait. Calf binding shows signs of professional restoration. Giltstamped spine has initials "F.V.W. | S.N.C." and year of binding "1681" together with tetragrammaton stamps. A clean, well-preserved and unbrowned copy on good paper. VD 17, 23:249754Q (only 7 plates). Hollstein 39, 93, 391-400. Jantz 3357. STC W 1222. Vinet 734. Ornamentstichslg. Berlin 3111. Lipperheide Sbe 8. Bulling 70. Seebaß, N. F., 879 (last 10 ff. only). [Interior decoration].
2de (or 3ème?) cahier]. [Paris, Osmont, ca. 1815].
4to oblong (204 × 260 mm). 50 numbered engraved plates in original hand colour. Contemporary half calf over red paper boards. Rare collection of designs for splendid interior decorations. The set depicts oppulent beds, curtains and entire rooms in the Empire style with French captions and scales. Not seen at auction for more than a century. - The series "Recueil de draperies d'Hallavant" appeared from ca. 1810 to 1839 in 7 "cahiers", each containing between 44 and 50 plates. They were published by Osmont in Paris, and later by Pinsonnière. Copies were sold coloured and uncoloured, with and without a title-page. The series was issued without any dates except for the 7th cahier, which appeared in 1839. The earlier volumes can be dated only based on internal evidence of drapery styles. Judging from the number of plates and the style, the present volume presumably is either cahier 2 or 3. - Extremities rubbed; corners bumped. Occasional light spotting near margins; some plate numbers and captions partly cut; the plates in very good condition. A fine copy of this artistic work essential for the spreading of the Empire style across Europe. Canepa, "French Empire influences on Curtain design in Ackermann's Repository of Arts" in: Furniture History XXXVIII (2002), pp. 123-127 and passim. [Lennox Airship].
No place, ca. 1835.
Engraving, 395 x 261 mm. Interesting German engraving, describing the airship built by Count Lennox in London in 1834/35. "In 1835, the comte de Lennox built the 'Eagle', a cigar-shaped airship that he displayed in London. This craft had four large paddles on either side that 'experimental sailors' were to turn back and forth like the oars of ancient ships. No evidence exists that Lennox tried to fly his invention, nor is there any reason to think it would have worked if he had tried" (Don Berliner, Aviation: Reaching for the Sky [1997], p. 33). "[The airship of 98,700 cubic feet capacity] is of interest because a small balloon or ballonet, 7,050 cubic feet contents, was placed inside the larger one for an air filling. A car 66 feet in length was rigged beneath the envelope by means of ropes eighteen inces long. Above the car the envelope was provided with a long air cushion in connection with a valve. The intention was by compression of the air in the cushion and the inner balloon, to alter the height of the airship, in order to travel with the most favourable air currents. The motive power was 20 oar propellers worked by men. The airship proved to be too heavy on completion to lift its own weight, and was destroyed by the onlookers" (George Whale, British Airships: Past, Present and Future [1919], p. 16). - Occasional insignificant browning; slightly wrinkled. Traces of folding. Cf. the like-sized drawing, dated 1838, in the ILA catalogue: Liebmann/Wahl (1912), no. 136 (probably based on this engraving, or vice-versa).

[Photographie - Joseph Beuys, Keith Haring, Gerhard Richter, Günther Uecker].
Verschiedene Orte, 1979-1992.
199 Gelatinesilberabzüge auf Barytpapier, auf leichten Karton aufgezogen. Je ca. 265:179 mm, Papier ca. 293:208 mm. Lose in Original-Holzkassette. Joseph Beuys, Fernando Botero, Arno Breker (2 x), Paul Flora, Ernst Fuchs, Karl Otto Götz, Keith Haring, Jörg Immendorff, Loriot, Heinz Mack, Georg Muche, Meret Oppenheim, Gerhard Richter (2 x), HA Schult, Roland Topor, Günther Uecker, Tomi Ungerer, Wolf Vostell, Dondi White, Shizuko Yoshikawa u. v. m.

So verlebte also auch Rainer d. - ISBN: 3-9500813-8-0.
