Intrecciando le odissee di pazienti 'memorabili' (psicopatici assassini di presidenti americani e gemelle siamesi, ma anche tanti uomini e donne comuni) con le arditezze sperimentali dei medici che li hanno studiati e curati, Kean mostra i nessi profondi tra ogni 'caso' della galleria e uno specifico aspetto neurocognitivo. Come nei libri di Oliver Sacks, a impressionare è la vastità del ventaglio adattativo con cui il nostro assetto cerebrale può ridisegnare - rispondendo a una varietà di danni e traumi, lesioni estese o selettive - la sua interazione con il mondo circostante.
