Innesco del nuovo libro di Sam Kean, l'episodio segna anche l'avvio della moderna parabola neuroscientifica. Intrecciando le odissee di pazienti 'memorabili' (psicopatici assassini di presidenti americani e gemelle siamesi, ma anche tanti uomini e donne comuni) con le arditezze sperimentali dei medici che li hanno studiati e curati, Kean mostra i nessi profondi tra ogni 'caso' della galleria e uno specifico aspetto neurocognitivo. Ad esempio, tra il capitano George Dedlow - reduce della guerra civile privo di un braccio e delle gambe - e la percezione allucinatoria degli «arti fantasma»; tra la malattia kuru dei Papua - causata dal consumo rituale dei cervelli dei cadaveri - e le sindromi neurodegenerative a noi più familiari; tra i pazienti epilettici di Roger Sperry (ai quali viene rescisso il corpo calloso) e le «competenze» emisferiche, tuttavia compensate dalle stupefacenti rimodulazioni funzionali operate dalla plasticità neurale. Come nei libri di Oliver Sacks, a impressionare è la vastità del ventaglio adattativo con cui il nostro assetto cerebrale può ridisegnare - rispondendo a una varietà di danni e traumi, lesioni estese o selettive - la sua interazione con il mondo circostante.
