VOLTA ALESSANDRO. "A NEW ERA IN ELECTRICITY" PMM 225
On the Electricity Excited by the Mere Contact of Conducting Substances of Different Kinds.
London W. Bulmer & Co. for Peter Elmsley 1800. 4to. In recent marbled paper wrappers. Extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" volume 90 part II. Including title-page of volume. Leaves reinforced in margin. Light offsetting from folding plate as usual. Plate trimmed with loss of right margin. 4 403-431 pp. folded plate. First edition of "the first announcement of the voltaic 'pile' or electric battery" Grolier/Horblit. It was a breakthrough in physics and led to the development of electrotechnology and is today regarded as being one of the major milestones in the history of science.
"The voltaic pile revolutionized the theory and practice of electricity so that within one hundred years of Volta's invention more progress was made than in the two thousand four hundred years between the tentative experience of Thales and the publication of Volta's letter addressed to Sir Joseph Banks President of the Royal Society . The indispensability and ubiquity of electricity in one form or another in western civilization today emphasize sharply the fact that before 1800 human environment and existence were closer to life in ancient Egypt than to our own. Volta's invention is one of the earliest and most important causes of the change" PMM.

"The paper in French was sent by Volta to his friend Cavallo in London for communication to the Royal Society. In it Volta describes the pile of alternating dissimilar metals silver and zinc which when moist generated a flow of constant-current electricity. With this new force water was decomposed metal was electro-deposited the electro-magnet was created and the electrical age was begun."Dibner Heralds of Science no. 60.

Horblit 37b
Norman 2164
PMM 255
Sparrow 168
Dibner 60
Barchas 2092 unknown

VOLTA ALEXANDRO. VOLTA'S LAW OF CONTACT ELECTRICITY.
Ueber die sogenannte galvanische Electricitt. Uber die sogenannte. Zweite Abhandlung.
Halle Rengerschen Buchhandlung 1802-1803. Without wrappers as published in "Annalen der Physik. Herausgegeben von Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert" Bd. 10 Viertes Stck. The entire issue offered = Stck 4. Titlepage to vol. 10. Pp. 389-512 a. 1 engraved plate. Extract from Ergnzungsheft zum Jahre 1802. =Zweite Abhandlung. Volta's papers: pp. 421-449 a. pp. 497-520. Very light browning to 2. Abhandlung. First appearance in German of Volta's importent paper in which he describes the electrical forces that acts between the metal-plates in the Voltaic Pile. The German publication was printed in the same year as the Italian original "Sull' identita del Fluido Elettrico col Fluide Galvanico" 1802.

"A long memoir by Volta in two parts.reports that by measuring the electrometer deflections with different pairs of metals he found that the forces which drive the electric fluid.from the first metal to the second are: silver/copper 1 copper/iron 2 iron/thin 3 lead/tin 1 lead/zinc 5. Then the force for silver/zinc in immidiate contact is 12 12315 copper/tin 5 = 32 iron/zinc 9 513 etc. Thus 'the force or impulsion with which two metals act on the electric fluid is equal to the sum of the forces of the series of metals which stands between them and.the electric force is the same as that which arises when the two extreme metals have no effect on the force of the latter'. This is the first statement of what Maxwell called 'Volta'slaw of contact electricity'."Partington IV p.15. unknown

Whyte, Adam Gowans
The Electrical Industry: Lighting, Traction and Power
192 pages plus 47 pages of ads at back. "Before 1879 the electrical industry did not exist. It has made tremendous progress in the twenty odd years since it was born - progress much more rapid than that made, say, by the steam-engine a century ago." - from page 2. Doesn't that sound like the state of the internet in the mid-1990s, or the blockchain explosion of recent years? Chapters include: The Birth of the Electrical Industry; The Early Days of Electric Lighting; Electric Lighting in London and the Provinces; The Early Days of Electric Traction; The Development of Electric Inter-Urban Tramways; Electric Railways; Electric Power - An Industrial Revolution; The Economies of Electric Power; Electric-Power Distribution Schemes; Electrical Engineering as a Career; The Future of the Electrical Industry. Above-average but not excessive wear to red cloth exterior. Binding intact. Two small contemporary book vendor artifacts inside back board, otherwise unmarked. A worthy vintage copy of this fascinating historical item. Book
