This fascinating photo album contains an historic array of images showing the rapidly developing oil drilling and oil production market in Colombia for British petroleum companies and the Tropical Oil Company subsidiary to Standard Oil. Abercrombie 1891-1975 whose blowout preventer invention in 1922 had revolutionized the oil industry was approached by a British oil consortium in 1924 to drill test wells along the Sinu river in Colombia outside of Monteria. The consortium wished to further expand their producing oil wells and connect up with pipelines to pump oil through Venezuela to their oil terminal near Maracaibo. He agreed to aid them in the project and demanded $ 20000 a month for the contract with this album documenting the work. The photo album shows the group setting up camps crossing the Sinu River unloading machinery in Escondido the pack horses local villagers the oil holding tanks the large camp being set up to house the drilling crews complete with a hospital oil drilling rigs under construction and more. There are many photos of the oil drilling crews setting up tents the camp mascots of monkeys and parrots fishing scenes including freshly caught swordfish and dolphin building trestle log bridges to reach the oil derricks laying corduroy roads port scenes street scenes in Monteria and Escondido and more. Abercrombie’s biographer mentions a Christmas dinner in Lorencita “that came strictly out of cans. . . served on rough planking under tall coconut palms†and this album opens with two photos recording the event. Of particular interest are the several photos included of the 1926-1927 U.S. Army Pan American Goodwill flight which included five Loening OA-1A two-seat amphibious biplanes which were capable of sea and land touchdowns led by Major Herbert Dargue. The planes were all named for prominent cities and four of those depicted here include the San Francisco San Antonio Detroit and St. Louis with the San Francisco the only plane to complete all the scheduled stops on the tour and now preserved on display at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum’s Udavr-Hazy Center. In addition this album includes a substantial section of the Abercrombie Co. and Cameron Iron Works contracts with building and drilling oil wells near Taylor Bayou in Jefferson Co. Texas including a site they termed “Dog Lake†for Sun Oil Company as well as the earliest oil exploration in Lake Pelto LA and Lake Barre LA. The drill rig images in Texas and Louisiana show piled up pipe equipment drills oil-soaked roughnecks and more. Titusville: J.A. Mather 1866. 22 stereo cards with printed paper labels on verso titled in manuscript. 3-1/4 x 6-3/4 inches. Some wear to cards images near fine. 22 stereo cards with printed paper labels on verso titled in manuscript. 3-1/4 x 6-3/4 inches. "the unofficial photographer of the industry" --Darrah. A fascinating and important record of the birth of the oil industry in northwestern Pennsylvania. British-born John Aked Mather 1829-1915 moved to the United States in 1856 and soon after was introduced to photography by an itinerant daguerreian. Mather travelled through West Virginia and Ohio before settling in Titusville Pa in 1860 with his wife. Edwin Drake of the Seneca Oil Company had begun drilling in August of 1859 and Mather was poised to become the oil boom's photographer of record travelling along Oil Creek River on his flatbed studio. Mather's views of wells and rigs were so popular in their time that owners would request Mather photograph their operations to encourage more investment. The photographs that Mather took make up the largest and most significant pictorial record of the western Pennsylvania oil boom "a record of the first ten years of the industry a coverage without equal in any nineteenth century technology" Darrah The World of Stereographs p. 80. This group of 22 stereo views includes "Oil Seekers Pithole Penn" "Green Mountain Well " "Champion Wells Pioneer River" "RR Bridge & Pioneer from Oil Creek" "New York Well Pioneer" "Lady Stewart & Lady Brooks Pioneer River" "Petroleum Center Penn" "Fishers Shipping Sheds" "Old Shipping Platform Miller Farms" and the humorous "Sunken Fortune or Ruined Man J.A.
