Esso ha dunque una finalità, di alfabetizzazione sulle tecnologie dell'informazione e della comunicazione, e come tale è rivolto a studenti universitari e a chiunque desideri formarsi una conoscenza sugli argomenti basilari dell'informatica senza entrare in eccessivi dettagli tecnici. Abbiamo perciò cercato di coniugare il rigore della trattazione con la snellezza e la semplicità, espositiva, necessarie per realizzare un percorso completo ma accessibile anche a lettori senza competenze preliminari specifiche. In coerenza con questa impostazione, abbiamo scelto di tralasciare qualsiasi contenuto esclusivamente finalizzato all'acquisizione di capacità, di uso di un dispositivo, che si tratti di PC, tablet, smartphone o qualsiasi altro tipo di computer. Per la stessa ragione, pur presentando esempi di codice scritto in linguaggio C e in Basic, abbiamo mantenuto la presentazione indipendente da uno specifico linguaggio di programmazione.
