‎"WHEATSTONE, CHARLES. - STEREOSCOPIC VISION DISCOVERED.‎

‎Beiträge zur Physiologie des Gesichtssinnes. (Aus dem Englishen von dr. August Franz). Erster Theil (alles übersetzt): Ueber einige merkwürdige und bis jetzt unbeobachtete Erscheinuungen beim Sehen mit beiden Augen.‎

‎(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1842). No wrappers. In: In ""Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff"", Ergänzungsband (Nach Bd. LI einzuschalten), Stück 1. With titlepage to the volume (Erg.-Bd.). Pp. 1-192 a. 3 plates. (Entire issue offered). Wheatstones paper: pp. 1-48. Brownspots to inner margin on the first page, otherwise clean. Stamp to titlepage and verso of plates.‎

‎First appearance in German of this classic paper in physiological optics in which Wheatstone discovered the stereoscopic vison of the human eye.Stereopsis was first described by Wheatstone in 1838 (published first in the Transactions). In 1840 he was awarded the Royal Medal of the Royal Society for his explanation of binocular vision, a research which led him to make stereoscopic drawings and construct the stereoscope. He showed that our impression of solidity is gained by the combination in the mind of two separate pictures of an object taken by both of our eyes from different points of view. Thus, in the stereoscope, an arrangement of lenses or mirrors, two photographs of the same object taken from different points are so combined as to make the object stand out with a solid aspect. Sir David Brewster improved the stereoscope by dispensing with the mirrors, and bringing it into its existing form with lenses.""As the inventor of the stereoscope, later developed by Brewster, Wheatstone found himself - to his own surprise - the first since Leonardo da Vinvi to discuss depth perception in terms of the different image received by the eye...""(DSB XIV, p. 290).Garrison & Morton No. 1498. Also with K.E. von baer ""ueber das Klima von Sitcha und den russischen besitzungen an der Nordwestküste von Amerika"", pp. 129-154.‎

‎Portrait of Archduchess Marie Henriette of Austria queen of Belgium wife of King Leopold II.‎

‎London ca. 1875. Original photograph cabinetcard albumen print 167 x 107 cm. Marie Henriette of Austria Marie Henriette Anne; 23 August 1836 - 19 September 1902 was Queen consort of the Belgians. She was married to King Leopold II of Belgium. Marie Henriette was one of five children from the marriage of Archduke Joseph Palatine of Hungary and Duchess Maria Dorothea of Wrttemberg. Marie Henriette was a cousin of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and granddaughter of Leopold II Holy Roman Emperor through her father. When she was 16 she married 18-year-old Prince Leopold of Belgium the heir to the throne on 22 August 1853. Leopold was the second-surviving son of Leopold I of Belgium and his French wife Louise of Orlans; Marie Henriette was the sister-in-law of Charlotte of Belgium future Empress of Mexico and a cousin by marriage to Victoria of the United Kingdom and Maria II of Portugal. The marriage was arranged to strengthen the status of the Belgian Monarchy. As the former Protestant monarch of a newly established monarchy the Belgian king wished his son to marry a member from a Roman Catholic and prestigious dynasty and the name Habsburg was one of her more important qualities. Henriette was a vivid and energetic person interested in riding. Pauline de Metternich wrote that theirs was a marriage "between a stable-boy and a nun and by nun I mean the Duke of Brabant". Henriette is said to have had a terrible temperament. The marriage became unhappy and the couple lived more or less separate lives. She became queen in 1865. After the death of their son in 1869 the couple separated completely after having made a last attempt to have another son which however resulted in their daughter Clementine. She gave her daughters a very strict upbringing. Her main interest was in her Hungarian horses. She lived most of her life unhappy and discontented. In 1895 she retreated to Spa; her youngest daughter Clementine replaced her as first lady at the Court in Brussels for the remainder of her husband's life. Marie Henriette died at the Htel du Midi in Spa; she had bought the house in 1895 after separating with her husband. She was buried in the Royal Crypt at the Church of Our Lady of Laeken in Brussels. Her husband later married though illegally under Belgian law his mistress Caroline Delacroix. She was the 607th Dame of the Royal Order of Queen Maria Luisa. Marie Henriette also held the Royal Order of Victoria and Albert. Wikipedia. KEYWORDS:photo/belgium/united kingdom unknown‎

‎Portrait of the Rt. Hon. John Bricht M.P.‎

‎London ca. 1875. Original photograph cabinet card albumen print 165 x 11 cm. - The London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company 110 & 108 Regent Street and 54 Cheapside. John Bright 16 November 1811 - 27 March 1889 Quaker was a British Radical and Liberal statesman one of the greatest orators of his generation and a strong critic of British foreign policy. In partnership with Richard Cobden he founded the Anti-Corn Law League aimed at abolishing the unpopular Corn Laws which protected landowners interests by levying taxes on imported wheat thus raising the price of bread at a time when factory-owners were trying to cut wages. Abolition was achieved in 1846. Bright also worked with Cobden in another Free Trade initiative the Cobden-Chevalier Treaty of 1860 promoting closer interdependence between Britain and France. This campaign was conducted in collaboration with French economist Michel Chevalier and succeeded despite Parliaments endemic mistrust of the French. Bright sat in the House of Commons from 1843 to 1889 promoting free trade electoral reform and religious freedom. He was almost a lone voice in opposing the Crimean War; he also opposed Gladstones proposed Home Rule for Ireland. The phrase Mother of Parliaments was coined by Bright. Bright was born at Greenbank Rochdale in Lancashire England - one of the early centres of the Industrial Revolution. His father Jacob Bright was a much-respected Quaker who had started a cotton mill at Rochdale in 1809. Jacob's father Abraham was a Wiltshire yeoman who early in the 18th century moved to Coventry where his descendants remained. Jacob Bright was educated at the Ackworth School of the Society of Friends and apprenticed to a fustian manufacturer at New Mills Derbyshire. John Bright was his son by his second wife Martha Wood daughter of a Quaker shopkeeper of Bolton-le-Moors. Educated at Ackworth School she was a woman of great strength of character and refined taste. There were eleven children of this marriage of whom John was the eldest surviving son. His younger brother was Jacob Bright an MP and mayor. His sisters included Priscilla Bright whose husband was Duncan McLaren MP and Margaret Bright Lucas. John was a delicate child and was sent as a day pupil to a boarding school near his home kept by William Littlewood. A year at the Ackworth School two years at Bootham School2 York and a year and a half at Newton near Clitheroe completed his education. He learned he himself said but little Latin and Greek but acquired a great love of English literature which his mother fostered and a love of outdoor pursuits. In his sixteenth year he entered his father's mill and in due time became a partner in the business. In Rochdale Jacob Bright was a leader of the opposition to a local church-rate. Rochdale was also prominent in the movement for parliamentary reform by which the town successfully claimed to have a member allotted to it under the Reform Bill. John Bright took part in both campaigns. He was an ardent Nonconformist proud to number among his ancestors John Gratton a friend of George Fox and one of the persecuted and imprisoned preachers of the Religious Society of Friends. His political interest was probably first kindled by the Preston election in 1830 in which Edward Stanley after a long struggle was defeated by Henry "Orator" Hunt. But it was as a member of the Rochdale Juvenile Temperance Band that Bright first learned public speaking. These young men went out into the villages borrowed a chair of a cottager and spoke from it at open-air meetings. John Bright's first extempore speech was at a temperance meeting. Bright got his notes muddled and broke down. The chairman gave out a temperance song and during the singing told Bright to put his notes aside and say what came into his mind. Bright obeyed began with much hesitancy but found his tongue and made an excellent address although sometimes he spoke with a syntax similar to Yoda from Star Wars. Tales of these early years circulated through England and the United States late into his career to the extent that students at institutions such as the young Cornell University regarded him as an exemplar for activities such as the Irving Literary Society. On some early occasions however he committed his speech to memory. In 1832 he called on the Rev. John Aldis an eminent Baptist minister to accompany him to a local Bible meeting. Mr Aldis described him as a slender modest young gentleman who surprised him by his intelligence and thoughtfulness but who seemed nervous as they walked to the meeting together. At the meeting he made a stimulating speech and on the way home asked for advice. Mr Aldis counselled him not to learn his speeches but to write out and commit to memory certain passages and the peroration. This "first lesson in public speaking" as Bright called it was given in his twenty-first year but he had not then contemplated a public career. He was a fairly prosperous man of business very happy in his home always ready to take part in the social educational and political life of his native town. A founder of the Rochdale Literary and Philosophical Society he took a leading part in its debates and on returning from a holiday journey in the east gave the society a lecture on his travels. He first met Richard Cobden in 1836 or 1837. Cobden was an alderman of the newly formed Manchester Corporation and Bright went to ask him to speak at an education meeting in Rochdale. Cobden consented and at the meeting was much struck by Bright's short speech and urged him to speak against the Corn Laws. His first speech on the Corn Laws was made at Rochdale in 1838 and in the same year he joined the Manchester provisional committee which in 1839 founded the Anti-Corn Law League He was still only the local public man taking part in all public movements especially in opposition to John Feilden's proposed factory legislation and to the Rochdale church-rate. In 1839 he built the house which he called "One Ash" and married Elizabeth daughter of Jonathan Priestman of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In November of the same year there was a dinner in Bolton in honour of Abraham Paulton who had just returned from an Anti-Corn Law tour in Scotland. Among the speakers were Cobden and Bright and the dinner is memorable as the first occasion on which the two future leaders appeared together on a Free Trade platform. Bright is described by the historian of the League as "a young man then appearing for the first time in any meeting out of his own town and giving evidence by his energy and by his grasp of the subject of his capacity soon to take a leading part in the great agitation." In 1840 he led a movement against the Rochdale church-rate speaking from a tombstone in the churchyard where it looks down on the town in the valley below. A daughter Helen was born to him; but his young wife after a long illness died of tuberculosis in September 1841. Three days after her death at Leamington Cobden called to see him. "I was in the depths of grief" said Bright when unveiling the statue of his friend at Bradford in 1877 "I might almost say of despair for the life and sunshine of my house had been extinguished." Cobden spoke some words of condolence but "after a time he looked up and said 'There are thousands of homes in England at this moment where wives mothers and children are dying of hunger. Now when the first paroxysm of your grief is past I would advise you to come with me and we will never rest till the Corn Laws are repealed.' I accepted his invitation" added Bright "and from that time we never ceased to labour hard on behalf of the resolution which we had made." Etc. Wikipedia. ‎Portrait of Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts Baroness Burdett-Coutts.‎

‎London ca. 1870. Original photograph carte de visite albumen print 10 x 6 cm. - The London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company 110 & 108 Regent Street and 54 Cheapside. Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts Baroness Burdett-Coutts 21 April 1814 - 30 December 1906 born Angela Georgina Burdett was a nineteenth-century philanthropist the daughter of Sir Francis Burdett 5th Baronet and the former Sophia Coutts daughter of banker Thomas Coutts. In 1837 she became one of the wealthiest women in England when she inherited her grandfather's fortune of around 1.8 million pounds sterling following the death of her stepgrandmother Harriot Mellon. She joined the surnames of her father and grandfather by royal licence to become Burdett-Coutts. Edward VII is reported to have described her as "after my mother the most remarkable woman in the kingdom." Burdett-Coutts was widely known as "the richest heiress in England". She was a great collector of paintings including many Old Masters. Amongst the contemporary paintings she purchased was Robert Scott Lauder's Christ Walking on the Sea. The Reverend Richard Harris Barham in a ballad part of the Ingoldsby Legends he wrote under the pen name "Thomas Ingoldsby" for Queen Victoria's coronation referred to her as "Miss Anjaley Coutts". She became a notable subject of public curiosity receiving numerous offers of marriage. She inherited the country house at Holly Lodge Estate in Highgate which was then just outside London where she was famous for holding receptions. Burdett-Coutts spent the majority of her wealth on scholarships endowments and a wide range of philanthropic causes. One of her earliest philanthropic acts was to co-found with Charles Dickens a home for young women who had "turned to a life of immorality" including theft and prostitution. The home was known as Urania Cottage. She avoided taking sides in partisan politics but was actively interested in improving the condition of the black races in Africa or the education and relief of the poor or suffering in any part of the world. Though she made no special distinction of creed in her charities Burdett-Coutts was a notable benefactor of the Church of England building two churches - including St Stephen's in Rochester Row Westminster - and endowing church schools. As executor of the will of the Reverend Chauncy Hare Townshend the author of several volumes of poetry she with the Rev. Thomas Helmore also a poet used money from Townshend's estate to build a primary school in Westminster known as Burdett-Coutts & Townshend Foundation Church of England Primary School. She endowed the bishoprics of Cape Town and Adelaide 1847 and the founding bishopric of British Columbia 1857. The granite fountain in Edinburgh with a statue of Greyfriars Bobby was erected by Baroness Burdett-Coutts.4 She also supported the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children NSPCC in 1883 and founded the Westminster Technical Institute in 1893 and was closely involved with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals RSPCA. Burdett-Coutts founded Columbia Market in 1869 in Bethnal Green in the East End of London the district where much of her work was carried out. With her project in Columbia Square she became a pioneer in social housing. Through her support of missionary and nursing efforts she was associated with Louisa Twining and Florence Nightingale. Her small housing development Holly Village on the corner of what was then her estate is now in private hands and may still be seen in Highgate. She was also the president of the British Goat Society. In 1871 in recognition of her philanthropic work Queen Victoria conferred on her a suo jure peerage as Baroness Burdett-Coutts of Highgate and Brookfield in the County of Middlesex. On 18 July 1872 she became the first woman to be presented with the Freedom of the City of London at the Guildhall and in 1874 she became Edinburgh's first woman Freeman and was also presented with the Freedom of that city. Lady Burdett-Coutts died of acute bronchitis at her home on Stratton Street Piccadilly. By the time of her death she had given more than 3 million to good causes. She was buried on 5 January 1907 near the West Door in the nave of Westminster Abbey. She left no issue and the barony became extinct on her death. Charles Dickens dedicated his novel Martin Chuzzlewit to her and she had many royal and eminent friends. The book Flashman's Lady by George MacDonald Fraser makes reference to her fictional love for James Brooke The White Rajah and his rejection of her due to his physical affliction. Angela Burdett-Coutts also features in Terry Pratchett's novel Dodger; in an afterward he states that part of his reason for writing the book was to bring Burdett-Coutts to the attention of modern readers. ‎Portrait of Joseph Chamberlain.‎

‎London ca. 1875. Original photograph cabinet card albumen print 11 x 165 cm. London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company 110 & 108 Regent Street and 54 Cheapside London. Joseph Chamberlain 8 July 1836 - 2 July 1914 was a British politician and statesman. Unlike most major politicians of the time he was a self-made businessman who had not attended university. Born in London Chamberlain made his career in Birmingham first as a manufacturer of screws and then as a notable Mayor of the city. During his early adulthood he was a radical Liberal Party member and a campaigner for educational reform. He entered the House of Commons aged almost forty relatively late in life for a front-rank politician. Rising to power through his influence with the Liberal grassroots organisation he served as President of the Board of Trade in Gladstone's Second Government 1880-85. At the time Chamberlain was notable for his attacks on the Conservative leader Lord Salisbury and in the 1885 general election he proposed the "Unauthorised Programme" of benefits for newly enfranchised agricultural labourers. Chamberlain resigned from Gladstone's Third Government in 1886 in opposition to Irish Home Rule and after the Liberal Party split he became a Liberal Unionist a party which included a bloc of MPs based in and around Birmingham. From the 1895 general election the Liberal Unionists were in coalition with the Conservative Party under Chamberlain's former opponent Lord Salisbury. Chamberlain accepted the post of Secretary of State for the Colonies declining other positions. In this job he presided over the Second Boer War and was the dominant figure in the Unionist Government's re-election at the "Khaki Election" in 1900. In 1903 he resigned from the Cabinet to campaign for tariff reform. He obtained the support of most Unionist MPs for this stance but the split contributed to the landslide Unionist defeat at the 1906 general election. Some months later shortly after turning seventy he was disabled by a stroke. Despite never becoming Prime Minister he is regarded as one of the most important British politicians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries as well as a renowned orator and an interesting character who split both main parties. Winston Churchill later wrote of him that he was the man "who made the weather". Chamberlain was the father by different marriages of Sir Austen Chamberlain and Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.
