‎Gustave Auguste Ferrié, né à Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne (Savoie) le 19 novembre 1868 et mort à Paris le 16 février 1932, est un ingénieur et général français, pionnier de la radiodiffusion.Né dun père ingénieur dans les chemins de fer, il fait ses études à Draguignan pendant deux ans (1882-1884) et, après avoir redoublé l'année de mathématiques élémentaires et reçu le prix Claude Gay, il obtient son baccalauréat en 1884. Admis en 1887 (promotion X 1887) à l'École polytechnique, il devient ingénieur des transmissions radiophoniques dès 1891.Il fut le beau-frère de l'actrice Pauline Carton, dont le frère avait épousé l'une de ses surs, Hélène Ferrié.Après avoir été nommé en 1899 au comité franco-britannique chargé d'étudier les développements de la télégraphie sans fil, il commence ses travaux avec Guglielmo Marconi.Il expose ses travaux le 22 août 1900, lors du Congrès international d'électricité tenu à Paris du 15 au 25 août 1900, dans le cadre de l'exposition universelle de 1900. Sa communication a pour titre L'état actuel et les progrès de la télégraphie sans fil. Gustave Ferrié y explique que « Le seul système pratique de télégraphie sans fil est celui qui eut pour point de départ la théorie des ondes hertziennes et qui s'est développé grâce à l'expérience de M. Branly, aux travaux de M. Marconi et aux expériences récentes de M. Tissot ; mais on ne saurait donner actuellement une théorie parfaite du phénomène »En 1903, il perfectionne la télégraphie sans fil (TSF) en inventant un nouveau récepteur électrolytique ; la même année il propose l'installation d'une antenne au sommet de la tour Eiffel. Il conduit ses travaux avec trois officiers de marine : Camille Tissot, Maurice Jeance et Victor Colin. La portée de l'émetteur, d'abord de 400 km, passe en 1908 à près de 6 000 km.Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, il développe la radiotélégraphie pour les unités d'infanterie et d'artilleurs et devient ainsi l'un des artisans de la victoire de 1918. Cette démarche est concretisé en mars 1918 par sa nomination, par l'intermédiaire du général Mordacq, à la tête de l'Inspection des télégraphies militaires.Concrètement, dès 1914, il propose des modifications techniques permettant un meilleur échange entre l'émetteur et le récepteur, doté d'un triode. Durant la guerre, ses postes de radio ont été construits à plus de 10 000 exemplaires.Nommé général en 1919 à 51 ans, il est élu membre de l'Académie des sciences en 1922 et inspecteur général de la télégraphie militaire.Gustave Ferrié a été nommé en 1917 Compagnon de l'Institut international des ingénieurs de radio (Institute of Radio Engineers), et a reçu en 1931 la Médaille d'Honneur (IEEE Medal of Honor) pour son travail pionnier dans le développement de la radiocommunication en France et dans le monde.L'université d'Oxford lui a décerné un doctorat honoris causa en 1919. Il a été le premier président du Comité national de Géodésique et de Géophysique (1920-1926). Il a été Président de l'Union internationale de la radio et de la Commission internationale des Longitudes par Radio, ainsi que vice-président du Bureau international des unions scientifiques.Grand-croix de la Légion d'honneur, il meurt à l'hôpital militaire du Val-de-Grâce à Paris en 1932 à l'âge de 64 ans, victime d'une crise d'appendicite.
